    you have asked people what they would like to see. I would like to see a video on davinchi resolve 17 studio , media offline issue. I know if you move your project files they will go offline. I am talking about a video on how to fix it if your media has gone offline and you have not moved any project files. You are just sitting there on the cut page reviewing your video and magically your files go offline and you havent even moved anything to cause this to happen. Your vids are great love them.

    Hi Chadwick, thank you for the fantastic Speed Editor videos. Could you please advise on the following.
    I have very little experience with Davinci and speed editor (jut about 5hrs.)
    1. When would you recommend to sync the audio?
    2. On a Cut page how to put a second video on a top of the first one with Speed editor?
    (The keyboard puts the end of second video to the play head and not the Beginning)
    Sorry if this doesn’t make sense.
    Thank you

      Hi there, thanks for watching. I always sync the audio right after importing it in the media page. The simplest way is to select the audio and video clips, right click and auto sync by waveforms. You can also sync be in points or timecode, but if you have good audio on track 1, waveforms makes it simple.
      You want to use the place on top button - it's in the upper left section of buttons

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому

      Hey thanks - probably the most useful thing would be to make sure your time and date matches on each camera. These can be off a lot and and be a pain.
      If it’s in a location that you can add audio timecode with a tentacle sync or ambient lokit that would be really useful but not practical all the time to jam your tc.

    Hi Chadwick, I'm working with the speed editor as well in the cut page. Do you know how you can move a clip on a second track? If I hold the move button it will select all clips below that track as well. Also I do a lot of music videos (with one camera) so really curious how I'm going to setup my "sync" workflow for that in the cut page. Great video and thanks in advance!

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому +3

      Mornin Protails. Congrats on getting your speed editor! Once a clip is on the timeline, my understanding is to move it to another track you will need to use your mouse or keyboard to bump it up or down. The move function with the speed editor is only to rearrange the order from start to end of the timeline.
      However if you disable the orange target selector box by the track name that is a powerful indicator that tells resolve the hierarchy of your selection. If it’s orange it is the target. So if you deselect v1 you can edit straight down to v2. You can also use other commands like place on top without using the orange button.
      However, I have another video on my channel all about multicam sync. I think it can help a lot to learn the sync bin.
      For your workflow will really depend how it is shot. If you don’t have a jammed tc that comes from the cameras I would try to get a slate to mark in points because the waveform sync is not 💯 in the sync bin yet (imho). Cheers 🍻

    Thank you for this great video.
    I would love it if you could show how to enlarge the audio waveforms without the speed editor.
    How do you use the Close up feature in the cut page and control the placement of the zoom close up if it does not look the way you want the zoom to look. I am having such a hard time finding how to do this.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому

      Hi Gayle, thanks for watching. To enlarge the waveforms this only happens during a trim. Make sure the button is turned on in the left side of the timeline and when you drag the end of a clip on the bottom timeline it should be filled with waveforms during the trim.
      To adjust the placement of a close up without the speed editor open the transform settings under the viewer and adjust the y position there.

    • @swaha55
      @swaha55 3 роки тому

      @@CreativeVideoTips I tried adjusting the Y position in the Dynamic Zoom setting but after the end of the clip that was placed in the Timeline 2 from clicking the Close Up button, the next frames were all in a weird location.
      This is Free version 16. Do you think this was a bug they fixed in v17 or in the Studio version?
      Also when I am using my mouse and click in the upper timeline on the Cut page, when I release the mouse the playhead stays at the last point but then when I click and hold to move the playhead again it automatically goes back to the beginning of the clip. Is that supposed to happen?

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  2 роки тому +1

      Q should do that on a regular keyboard, but also the source and timeline on the speed editor. If you see a zoomed in portion that's to help you because you've marked an in and out point. To back out from that range hit ESC on the speed editor to take you back a zoom level. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for a very informative video. There are so many features available on the cut page and with the speed editor it kind of blows my mind. I guess one would need to spend some time using them to get to know their functionality. One thing I don't get is how do you select individual clips with the speed editor or do you have to do that with the mouse?

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for taking the time to watch this video! I have a whole playlist that breaks down a few of the specifics, but in a nutshell the cut page uses the "smart indicators" which find the nearest edit point to make a selection. You can refine that by clicking the cam 1,2,3 buttons to jump to a higher video track. Finally, there is the "move" key/button that will let you change the order of shots based off of what you are currently over. So yeah there really isn't selecting individual clips with the speed editor - it's more just modifying what is down on the timeline with it.
      The mouse is always there though if you need to use that as well. The most common need for this is a video clip on V2 or higher and you just want to nudge that b-roll over a little bit. (move won't do this, because it's just for changing order of shot)

    Chadwick, i'm not sure if you discuss it in a different video, but is there a way you can adjust playback speed from 1x to 1.2x , 1.4x.1.6 x etc for faster editing of dialog ?
    I find the 2x option is too fast to be able to hear the audio, but 'adjust clips speed' through the gui seems slow, a shortcut would be cool

    • @CreativeVideoTips

    Hey! Brilliant tutorial, very easy to follow, thanks for your hard work. I do have a question, is there a way on the cut page to overlay “B” footage over audio, eg. overlaying over an interview, cutting from the subject to video of something else while the audio of the interview continues underneath? Or is this just something that needs to be done in the edit page? Thanks again.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Paul! There absolutely is a way to do that in the cut page. The function is called “place on top”. There is a button for it under the media section and on the speed editor. The cool thing about this is it can take advantage of those smart indicators for placement if you are near a cut and don’t mark an in point. It can assume you want to place on top right at the cut point. I think F12 is the preset key command to do this.

    To answer your request for bugs about the cut page: how do I do a replace edit, where the in and out points stay fixed (maybe already synced to an audio track), but you want to replace the existing clip with a better one, without changing the duration of any edits. 3-point or 4-point edits.
    Additionally, what if I want to do a replace edit on V2 or V3...?
    On the Edit page, I hit “x” to set in and out point on the timeline, with the clip I want to replace selected. Then, I have to set an in point OR an out point on the source clip, depending on whether I want the replacement front or back timed. Then I hit F11 to make a Replace edit on the active V track. SO much work. FCPX equivalent is 10x more intuitive and faster.
    But if I can’t do it AT ALL on the cut page in resolve, then the whole page is pretty useless, isn’t it.
    The only way I’ve found is futz a version of it using the up/dow arrows to mark in and outs for a given clip, then do a simple Place on Top edit (also having to set either an in OR an out on the source clip for front or back timing.
    It kinda works, but isn’t a replace edit and something very strange happens if the play head is over the clip. It makes an unwanted cut....
    Ideas?
    I don’t know why they didn’t just combine ALL this functionality into the edit page; bring out an Uber-speed editor, and ditch the cut page altogether.
    I will bet a months income that’s how it will end up.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for your comment - You have found one of my top couple pet peeves that I really wish the Speed Editor could do, but it can’t. Without having a traditional “overwrite” only button you can’t do that. Your timeline length will always be changing in the cut page unless you use the “place on top” button - it’s kind of like a connected clip in Final Cut. You nailed that. (same with v2, and higher)
      I think they could easily fix this by giving a couple user custom options to how you want a button to act - maybe source overwrite to behave so you can 3 and 4 point edit with it.
      I’m not sure I agree about needing to do it all on the cut page though. As much as I like it - for sure, I’ll need to utilized the edit and color pages too. My hope is with time they will give more thought to those missed basic functions. I could see it getting consolidated though into one edit/cut page with mode options on the left - kind of like Avid did when they introduced smart tools to let you work with the mouse more then they had before.
      Try not to get discouraged though. It will get better with time. One thing I think might have gone through their heads with the cut page is that it’s a rough cut stage area and if that is the case you wouldn’t do a lot of replace or overwrite edits in that area? Maybe? Maybe not? The good thing is that every other basic and advanced function is there in the edit page and is keyboard driven, which is also fast - just different.

    • @fiveshorts
      @fiveshorts 3 роки тому

      @@CreativeVideoTips thanks for the reply. I was so hoping you were gonna say, just double tap the overwrite button or something...
      I’ll be honest, the only reason I’ve left my beloved FCPX is because it’s color controls and color management suck. And. because round tripping out to Resolve for color or to Logic for audio just ruin the delight of editing in FCPX. They interrupt the flow.
      So I’m making myself switch to resolve, which is ok, because so much of what I’m given is BRAW anyway, but I will say the day Apple introduces pro color and built-in “editors version” of Logic, I’ll be switching back, same day.
      Of course track based editing is the industry default and has worked for decades. But once you master that magnetic timeline and audio lanes and roles and keywords, it’s hard to go back. It’s like going back to dial up modems and CRTs.

      If you have In and out marks on a clip and tap source it restricts it to just that section. To back out without using the keyboard tap the esc button. This should give you the entirety of your source tape based off of your media breadcrumb level. (This is all in the cut page)

    I'm not sure if there's a way to do this specifically but here goes: I would like to incrementally increase/decrease clip duration for a series of shots. Basically to ramp sequence cuts to ascending or descending speed. Pretty specific use case, but I figure automation like this wouldn't totally be out of the question for Resolve.
    *Not a Cut Page note, but After Effects has scripts that do this kind of stuff. I'm curious if something comparable exists for keyframes too. Maybe in Fusion.

    Can the "Jump Cut" detector identify when there is a quick cut that is created by a video track 1 and video track 2 not lining up perfectly at beginning or end of clips?

    • @CreativeVideoTips

      I think the jump cut detector only works on track 1 from my understanding. This is a good question and is maybe something that can be improved in a future version of Resolve.

    truly helpful vid and good tips, thank you!! i d have two things i wrap my head around: how would you edit in the cut page from a multicam bin, while preserving the audio and layering out just the audio externally recorded and synced (lets say 2 cams, 1 external recorder)? would you use the cutpage for editing more traditional narrative dialog scenes like shot reverse shot, etc.. that seems to me a bit more complicated there? i m just trying to get done most of my work in the cutpage as i m liking it a lot ;)

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Kris - thank you so much for watching and the question. I have a video here that specifically talks about multicam in the cut page - it's actually a different function called sync bin.
      ua-cam.com/video/_Lw_bDtbJB4/v-deo.html
      You can do your 2 cam, 1 external workflow which is super common either way. (with multicam in the edit page or with sync bin in the cut page) - your choice, Sync Bin is more fun, Multicam is a little more flexible to make changes to the sync later on.
      My preferred way to use an external recorder is to marry that up to the wide or main camera angle first. You can do that in the media page by selecting your main video angle and your sound - right click - "Auto Sync Audio - based on waveforms". From this point forward you don't need to deal with your external audio tracks as a separate file in Resolve because the "live" on your main A cam Angle(s).
      Hope this helps - I might do a tutorial specifically on syncing the external sound for multicam in the future. Cheers!

    • @CreativeVideoTips

      I would say the speed editor in the edit page is good, but it’s definitely not quite as useful as it is in the cut page. I think this would make a great idea for a video to show how they differ.
      In a lot of ways it’s how the pages work differently. (Cut page ripples, edit page only ripples in the trim tool by default). Stuff like that.

    Wish there was a way to do J-cuts and L-cuts on the cut page. Coming from FCPX I'm using the cut page more than the edit page, but those are pretty basic cuts that there doesn't seem to be any way to do outside of the edit page.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  3 роки тому +1

      I do too 🤞maybe blackmagic will think about adding that someday. The good thing is if you bounce between the edit page and back to the cut page is that any j cuts you make are retained in the cut page to make further trims there.
      I think the goal of the cut page is to get you 90% of the way there.

I usually split the clip then and mark and delete the unwanted segment...
