Your Spanish has improved so much from your first speaking videos. Your hard work is so impressive and motivating. I'll be 62 in a month and have been retired in Mexico for 6 years. I finished my master's degree at almost the same age as you are now. I quit my doctorate program on day 1 because it wouldn't have helped me in my career and I thought, "What am I doing???!!!" But if it will help you in your career and/or you're going to do it anyway at some point, I say do it now. You're on a roll and it will be easier to just keep going since you're already in that sort of mindset/lifestyle. Time really goes so fast and your education will all be behind you before you know it. Look how fast 4.5 years of Spanish learning has gone. I think it will be harder to go back to school and get back into the swing of things if you wait. And you'll have that hanging over your head. You are so young and you will most likely (God willing) have years and years to enjoy traveling as much as you want and you'll be mostly debt-free, still at a very young age. It sounds like you'll still be able to travel some while you are working on your doctorate, so it's not like you're going to stop living your life. Many people get their doctorates while working full time and raising families, so surely you can still fit in some travel. Try to think about yourself at 35 because it will be here before you know it. Do you think you'll be happier that you traveled a lot more or that you traveled a lot less but have your doctorate. Only you know.

I agree with this comment wholeheartedly. I'm 55 and I can tell you Mike you will never regret getting an education, traveling or being debt free. We have owned two homes and paid both off as early as we could at my insistence. My mom was a slave to her house because of a divorce and other reasons. She died young (57) and I just didn't wan't that for myself. My dad also passed away very suddenly from cancer at 74. Go and enjoy every day!

I also agree wholeheartedly with this amazing advice. I'm currently 41, and am finishing up my doctorate in Spain. Twenty years ago, I was so eager to find a job and be independent after finishing my Spanish degree, I went straight into the workforce as a hospital interpreter. The pay wasn't so great, so I eventually went back for a masters 5 years later. I then transitioned into lecturing, which paid better but still not well. My mentors hinted at me considering getting a doctorate, but never really explained why. Nor did they explain how inexpensive college is at public universities in Europe!
Knowing what I know now, I would've moved back home with my parents, saved my money for a year or so, and went straight into a masters and then a phd program somewhere in Europe. By your age I would've been poised to make six figures. My brain nor my body are as agile as my twenty something ones were haha. NB: many European universities offer 100% or partially virtual options.
Another option regarding the property: do you currently house hack (rent out bedrooms)? That could allow you to pay the mortgage down quickly as well. The key to financial independence is partially being debt free, it is also a question of having multiple income streams so that your assets are greater than your liabilities. If you haven't already, read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" (en español). It's an amazing book.
Go for it man. With your positive attitude, work ethic, and with youth on your side, the sky is the limit! God bless you.🙏🏾

I think advanced degree is a very good idea given that a masters degree is now treated as entry-level in many fields. Since you’rean educator, you might want to explore a a doctorate of education (EdD). There are many excellent programs online that you can do while still working (Drexel, Laverne). They are typically three year programs. It is not easy working and doing school work at night and on the weekends but from my own experience, it has paid off very well. I would not suggest a PhD program because they’re typically five-year programs and they don’t pay as well as moving into administration with an EdD. Just my two cents, take it for what it’s worth. Your Spanish is amazing!

Hi Mike, Great video. I initially subscribed to your channel because, as an Intermediate Spanish speaker, I wanted to see someone who was ahead of me in the learning process, someone ambitious and serious (that's you). I obviously don't know you, but from your videos you come across as curious, thoughtful, and talented. From my perspective after 35 years in the world of business, your enthusiasm -- combined with those previously mentioned traits -- makes you a better potential employee, so much more than having a PhD (unless of course it's a requirement for a specific job). With that in mind I think you'd be able to find an opportunity, career wise, with "only" a Masters. More to the point, and more importantly, life is short. You obviously have a passion for languages, Spanish in particular, and cultures as well. PhD programs will always be there if you decide to do that in the future.
Good luck with your decision, and thanks for all the videos.
    Saludos,
    Bruce

Hi. I’ve been watching your videos almost from the beginning. And can understand everything you say. I consider myself to be fluent in Spanish as well. We started learning Spanish at approximately the same time. But please tell me something? Why are you so much more advanced than I? In terms of the smoothness in which you speak. I still studder searching for the right words and conjugations a lot. I speak Spanish everyday, as my wife doesn’t speak English at all. She only speaks Spanish. Maybe it’s just me. To me, my Spanish sounds terrible.

    • @MikeBen
      @MikeBen  Місяць тому

I think we all learn at different speeds and we also learn different things at different rates. For example, I have many friends who’ve been learning for less time than I have but their vocabulary is much more expansive either academically or slang related. Why? It could be exposure, just time, or a propensity to pick those things up faster than me but there are variations to all of our learning speeds. I will say, I make an effort to have in depth- full Spanish conversations very often and I am constantly reading and listening. If you’re doing the same I’d say it’s just a natural delineation and therefore nothing to worry about. As they say, comparison is the thief of joy. I imagine your Spanish is very good so no te preocupes

After a year and a half in Mexico I listen to you speak. To my ears you do not sound like what I hear now everyday.
Someone who does not reside in Mexico for a year or more, even if they were born and raised in Mexico, do not sound like the people that reside here.
I will never sound like a Mexican or any other native Spanish speakers. Not that any of you ought to give up...but I have.
Here is the thing speaking is overrated. Now 95 percent of the time I am listening.
In the United States eloquent verbosely with comic wit is fashionable because people in the US are TV talkers.
People just say what is popular and the ability to twist a nuelogisam from some form of popular media is the rage.
And You Tubers who talk, talk, and talk well get paid.
But listening 95 percent of the time is what one must do if one is not rooted in the land.
Here is an important issue in Mexico and in the US. Listen to the contrast:

Why is sounding like a Mexican, when you aren’t Mexican a goal. In my opinion it’s a bad and impossible goal. You aren’t Mexican, nor am I, we didn’t grow up there, nor do we speak Spanish as a first language. Doesn’t change the fact that we can learn, communicate, understand, and use the language just like natives can. My calculus teacher was from Brazil. She didn’t sound anything like any of my fellow Georgians but she was able to become a college professor in this country without sounding like us. I hope you see my point here. Check out my video titled, “why you will never reach native level fluency and why that’s ok”. I like having a little accent personally. I want to speak well but I want them to hear me and know that I’m not from there.

@@MikeBen I am very polémique. However, I would like to think it is because I am listening to the intellectuals in the Spanish Academies.
And by the way the United States and Canada also have Spanish Academies.
The national academies work independently but report to the main Spanish Academy. But the location of the Academy in Madrid is historically but has nothing to do with the Academy of Spanish as spoken in Spanish. That falls to the government of Spanish. Which can elect the standard language of the nation's choice.
