I was doing some research on the Riffe Lake, it looks like the State Government is waiting for funding to reinforce the dam against a potential earthquake. Because of this, and to avoid campers being caught on a potential break of the dam and flooding down the river, the state decided to close all the campgrounds nearby.
On the almost crash, thankfully your dashcam is a necessary investment, sadly we need to drive for everyone else on the road, stay frosty.

I drive a lot, sometimes with an RV in tow or just solo. I frequently drive from Charlotte to NJ on I81 and I78. I can say that I have more close encounters with idiots in cars than I do with RV's or Semi's. Oh, all types of rigs have given me a an HA at one time or another but mostly drivers in cars.

  • @maynardcat
    @maynardcat 5 років тому +8

I don't see his turn signal on, so he was in error just pulling over, and cutting you off, but when I see someone with a large tow or vehicle that are signaling to change lanes, I usually slow down and let them in. I figure towing or driving a big rig is not that easy so I try to make it a little easier for them. I do the same thing with on ramps if I see vehicles approaching I slow down and blend in with them rather than just keeping up speed and making it more difficult to get on the freeway.

What a bummer to have such a gorgeous spot overrun with shady people and drug deals! There's trash everywhere, people wandering all hours of the night, cars in and out.
      ============
I will never go back to this spot again! Is this where the local drug deals happen or what? On a Tuesday night... traffic non-stop, ALL night long! Someone meandered around my tent late at night, even brushing up against it! No one "normal" does that! We cleaned 2 bags of garbage out of our campsite before even setting up. Did not get much sleep because of all the shenanigans going on and was packed and leaving at 4:45 am!! Too bad all these people have to ruin such a beautiful place.
      --------------------------
Some of the downsides of the place is all the trash, there is an unbelievable amount of garbage here. We often find a lot of garbage in reservoir front camping areas but this place sets a new standard.

When the driver pulled around you to pass, he saw a few things which may have caused him to not know exactly what to do. The truck in front of you had his right signal blinking. The truck in front of you also may have been going a little slower than he thought initially, or it was slowing down to pull off the road to the right. He may have thought there was a chance the driver meant to put his left signal on and would be pulling to the left, so in front of him. It's also possible he pulled in too soon in front of you because he had someone behind him, a tailgater who was breathing down his neck and all he could think of was getting out of that guy's way.
If the truck in front of you had his signal on to pull into the rest area, the 5th wheel guy probably pulled in front of you because he wanted to stop at the rest area too, and he had just seen the sign that there was a rest area as he had started to pass you.
It looked more like five feet in the video than a foot, maybe because you had braked by then. Ideally, what you should have done was slowed down (which you did), and lightly tapped on your horn to let him know he cut in way too close. Horn blasting can potentially scare the crap out of a driver, make them swerve or slam on their brakes. This person made a mistake but you did not handle this optimally. You can't teach other people to drive while on the road! The best you can do is learn to become as defensive a driver as possible.
There are people on the road who are too old to be driving, and they have slow reactions or may not know exactly what they're doing. There are people on medications. There are people who are falling asleep or exhausted. There are young people on drugs. There are young people who are inexperienced. There are young people who are angry, aggressive, and drive in a dangerous manner. There are people on the road who consider themselves to be great drivers, and that their driving is an extension of what great people they are, superior to all others. They may carry a gun under their seat because there might be a driver on the road who approaches them at a rest stop and wants to talk about a driving mistake they made.
This was a four-lane road, and usually the scariest passing things happen on a two lane road. When passing a slower car on a two lane road, I've noticed about 25% of people tend to speed up when being passed. It's as if they realize as they're being passed that they were going a little too slow. However, when they speed up it takes that much longer to pass them so it makes passing them safely harder.
When I am being passed on a two lane road, or sometimes on a four lane road, and seeing NO ONE IS RIGHT BEHIND ME, I slow down slightly, maybe 3 or 4 MPH, so it makes it easier for the car passing me to do it quickly and safely. It's safer for both cars that way, the passer and the one being passed. Of course, when traffic is heavier at all, it's better to maintain speed.
Believe it or not, even good drivers will make a mistake in judgement every once in a while. What makes more sense when in a crisis situation? Remain as calm and clear headed as possible to make the best decision to avoid an accident? Or, start screaming at the other driver because you're so angry at others when they make dangerous mistakes. It's natural to be rattled, but better to stay calm and sharp, like race car drivers do.

Tacoma Power is the utility that operates the Mossyrock Dam that created the 23-mile Riffe Lake. In 2017, the utility determined it needed to lower water levels in the lake, citing concerns that an earthquake could compromise the spillways and cause flooding downstream. The decision has not been well-received locally, as the lake receded away from traditional access spots for boaters and swimmers, dried up fishing holes and exposed debris like stumps and rocks. Where's Jax?

The 'Sorry, Not Sorry Driver' seemed pretty clueless. Not even a little tail light flash to let you know he appreciated your horn. I drive a 32 foot motor home. I was flashing a semi with his left blinker on that he had enough room to come over into my lane. As he came into my lane, a dipstick Prius driver started merging into the same lane. No blinker and totally not aware of the semi. How he missed the back of that semi, or the front of me, was a miracle. Best part, he stuck his arm out the window and gave we the single finger salute. Crazy.

You'd be surprised how close that ACTUALLY was. Wide angle dash-cams, especially ones that show 170 or 180 degrees field of view exaggerate the "distance" in front of the camera, making it look farther away than it actually is. I'm in Florida as well and I will NOT drive here without one. I've been in very close calls and gone back to review the video and it is quite surprising the optical illusion of distance in front of the vehicle due to the wide-angle.

Eric, I drive a 35 ft Class A and tow a Honda CR-V. We have done over 18,000 miles since buying the "Beast" in December 2017. Passing a vehicle has always been my bane. My rear view camera on the RV only shows the front half of the toad. I can't see the toad in the side cameras or side mirrors. I always go waaaay beyond the car I am passing before moving over. Before our spring trip, I added a camera to the back of the toad and a monitor right in front of me on the dash. I love it. Without having to break my normal scan, I can see behind me in HD. When passing, when clear of the vehicle in the monitor I am 4-5 feet ahead of the vehicle I am passing. I still give plenty of room but is more confidence that I am clear. It also allows me to see someone moving up to pass me more easily than in the side view mirror.

There have been a lot of "transient" people passing through Washington recently and they caught wind that there are free camp grounds. The camp grounds have been over run by them and trashed. The state is doing what it can to keep camp grounds from being polluted and still enjoyable for everyone, which means sometimes forbidding over night camping.

I was devastated then there was only one dance club left that I liked and they closed that one down too. So no more going out dancing in clubs to my favorite music from the 80's, 90's and early 2000. Most of the music now days in current clubs suck. Times are changing for the worse. All I have left is good memories from the past and my CD and movie collection to remember those good times.

Looked at your video several times. .Looked at all of the comments below mine and I think the term "defensive driving" and the term "common courtesy" fit the bill, and both are sorely lacking these days. Many drivers get behind the wheel and just drive by instinct, their minds are some where else. As much time as you spend on the road Erick, I hate to say it but this won't be the last time. Look at every rig or car that passes you and expect them to cut you off. I was trained to back off the pedal and let them get in. Also don't panic. Stay calm, let it go or this will eat you up. Thanks for sharing this. We all learn a good lesson from these incidents you share.

Also, you may want to check out a ScanGauge II. The device will tell you the EXACT temps of the transmission and engine in real-time. ScanGauge II is VERY handy in the mountains.

I probably will get a ration heaped but here goes.
The 5th wheel was clear of the front of the RV. The video clearly shows this.
Was it close? Hell ya, way too close for comfort.
The 5th wheel driver screwed up BIG TIME.
    No argument.
I've seen and been with many people that use this horn this way.
Let's see.....you are in a potentially hazardous driving situation.
Let's take one hand off the wheel and use it to make a lot of noise that has NO benefit what so ever.
In fact; the horn could have made the situation worse.
Did you see the 5th wheel driver swerve when the horn blasted for almost two full seconds?
And just a few yards before a sweeping left curve...this could have been a MESS.
Had the driver lost control, RV driver would have been wadded in a ball with the 5th wheel.
    Bye bye Miranda.
What I would have done and had to do in the past:
On the brakes enough to allow the 5th wheel to clear you and enter the right lane.
Having complete control over your rig and with other traffic allowing...get into Left lane as quickly as possible, while still slowing down a bit.
Be ready for the 5th wheel driver to jump to left lane to pass other truck ahead.
You are still slowing to about 10 mph slower than you were, if not there now.
Get back into right lane and let the 5th wheel get out of range.
    Situation resolved.
Yeah; you don't get the satisfaction of scaring the crap out of the idiot like just happened to you.
Hell, they might not even realize what they just did.
You and you alone just prevented a major highway accident; go forward with that pat on the back.

At a place like that, if given 8 hrs, I'd spend 7 hrs sleeping 1 hrs filming. Leave a note on door, out hiking, or a cheap fishing pole setting out. Then change location in park, after 8 hrs. If they knock on door, put on a fishing hat, With hooks all over, & a fishing vest. Then Answer the door , you got 8 hrs of parking. They can't see in.
