My next ebike build is going to be a chopper. I will always have an ebike, they are the most economical way to commute bar none.

Eric, panniers work well for storage. I have a 5 yr old 300w folding, full suspension mountain bike with original battery, still going strong. I use it daily for groceries, post office, drive thru at the bank. Makes the tellers giggle. Thinking about upgrading to more power with fenders and comfort. This E-bike could be the one. Great informative vid!

Eric, long time subscriber here and long time competitive cyclist. Really good review of the e-bike. See if you can raise the saddle. With the pedal at the 6 o'clock position, your knee should only be very slightly bent. If you can get close to that position, you'll have MUCH more pedaling power when you're doing most of the work. Generally, most seat posts need to have 1/3 in the frame, so max of 2/3 sticking out of the frame. There may be a mark on the seat post that lets you know the maximum adjustment. Have great fun.

The hook on the top of the bike rack that goes over the bike bar will scratch the paint. We use a piece of the rubber type matting used to hold dishes in place in RV cupboards to protect our bikes. Cut a piece small enough to fit between the bike bar and the hook so it doesn't flap around in the wind.

As an owner of two ebikes, I agree. One of the problems with reading reviews and trying to figure out what ebike is good is that people write them about their experiences in the first weeks or few months. Design flaws and quality issues tend to emerge in the second year and after. But if you wait 3 years to review your bike, chances are they don't even make that model. But there are bikes that are so cheaply made, stop working, and then people have trouble getting them fixed.

I come from a manufacturing background and know a thing or two about welding, electronic components and also have owned 60+ motorcycles. Most of them being motocross bikes which I raced.

I honestly think you could patch a 4" tire without removing the wheel from the frame, front or rear: it's wide enough, that freeing the tire from the rim should give you easy access to the tube to patch it. Tho for your husbands sake, that doesn't remove the need to carry a patch kit and tire removal tools!

  • @MarkTarsis
    @MarkTarsis 5 років тому

I've owned a Rad Rover e-bike for a couple years. E-bikes are a lot of fun and they really are an effective way of getting around. A few things with this Lectric. The 28mph is probably the top motor speed while peddling. Most e-bikes top out at 20mph on motor only. The 50 mile range is also something I'd be skeptical of. Expect closer to 20-30, depend on how much you use the throttle and have to deal with rough terrain. The fat tires on these e-bikes may look weird but they're really really nice. Fat tires don't work well on normal bikes because it takes a lot of effort to get going on them. But with an e-bike you just lean into the motor to get rolling and the fatter tires offer a soft ride and basically eat up any terrain. Fat tires + e-bikes is sort of a combination that just works well.
The specs on this e-bike is actually very nice, especially for the price. The rack, fenders, lights(including tail which is needed for legal night riding), and anti-puncture tire liners means you're getting everything you really need. The price is also fantastic.
As for e-biking itself... it can be a mixed bag. Unfortunately many states' laws haven't caught up to the technology and they may consider them motorized vehicles. Which means you can't legally ride them in the same bicycle only areas(many paths and trails) in many states. The big "Lectric" label on the side of the bike doesn't help you with this. Also keep in mind that while replacing a vehicle with the bike has a lot of benefits, the US is NOT setup for bikes in most areas. So it isn't gonna replace a toad, but if you have a smaller RV that you don't mind moving around a lot(like Eric does), then it'd probably be a great little "drive the RV to an area, park and roam a few miles away" extender.
Before buying, I'd probably look at the states you'll be traveling in. Some states are very e-bike friendly and bike friendly in general. Other states, not so much.

My ebike helps my knees be healthy and strong. After 20 years of daily running, I realized I had to switch to biking to remain optimally healthy, and then when I retired and could choose the days I ride the 15 miles into town to shop, based on wind conditions etc., I went electric. Having an ebike made it much more fun. If I lived in Holland, I'd still use a regular bike. But the ebike makes the hills as easy as the flat. Also, riding 15 miles in a 12MPH headwind is difficult on a regular bike, like going up hill all the way. The ebike makes that no problem.

Planning on the road life, the two things I was preparing myself to put up with is a loud dirt bike or generator breaking the peace of a good campground, (not by me). Right. Seat height is critical, especially when riding longer distances. If your seat is even an inch too low, it can put a lot of strain on the knees. Cyclists who ride hundreds of miles a week really understand the optimal geometry of it. Yet, for decades, even they weren't smart enough to figure out that a split seat would be a vast improvement for male riders.
On the other hand, if Eric is riding trails and is not really an experienced trail rider, so being lower might help him feel better control until he gets used to his bike.

Great review! Thanks for motorcycle comparison comments. I've often used motorcycles for city and street work commute. Now thinking an ebike would be more flexible in slow traffic (maybe even quicker) . My state WA doesn't allow motorcycle lane sharing, but an ebike can legally slide up to the front of a line of cars at traffic lights. Used with caution, an ebike is better than a mc for quick sidewalk shortcuts, also easy parking, even easier than even a motorcycle. The folding feature is a nice bonus. (I'd prefer a bit more power than 500W for hills and distance.)

The 2nd bike would be great for a guest if it was made more comfortable by swapping out both the short stem for a tall one and the low handlebar for a cruiser/mustache upswept-style one. It looks like there's enough slack in the cables, but if not, it would still be easy/cheap work if you need to make them a little longer. It's what I did. Cheers from an American e-biker in Amsterdam!

Please look at the following words.
With your pedal at the bottom of the stoke Raise your seat up so your leg is 95% straight. I’m trying to describe this to you. Do you want your knee bent the same as when you’re standing up it’s bent ever so slightly otherwise it would be hyperextended. So you want your leg almost straight but bent so that’s 95%. And then with the pedal going horizontal to the ground do you want to move your seat back and forward so that when you are sitting on the seat your kneecap you could drop a line Bob put a nail on the end of a piece of string and you want that to be on the center of your ball of your foot and you want your ball of your foot on the spindle of the pedal. Now your seat is in the right position forward and back and your leg is extended properly and you will never have any problems even though it’s electric and I’m getting one too it’s on its way. I built Bikes For 25 years and I am a bike rider and I’m simply sharing with you the proper way to position your seat and seat post enjoy your ride man this is gonna be so much fun for you it’s so much smarter to have an electric bike today they go so much Faster and reach TopSpeed then a gasoline motor. If you question that listen to this think about an electric drill, pull the trigger it goes to 100% boom. You step on the throttle of a motor or twist a grip and rip up the motor and it ramps up vroom.
The drill motor goes to 100% much faster and so does your E bike....
Enjoy hopefully we meet when I am out there as well.
