    I've installed a few of those cameras as per customer instructions and none are happy with them. Picture quality is for the most part good but even a slight breeze and the cameras move all over the place. There is no rigidity with those mounts. I always have to go back and install the dome type cameras. The dome type cameras never move no matter how windy it is. Those cameras you have are going to move around like bobble heads when you're driving. I can see dome cameras in your future. Safe travels buddy.

      As one who has been in the "security/CCTV" world for years you are SPOT on. Domes' are the only way to go in this situation. Hope he has better luck.

      @IfYouDisagreeYouAreWrong I can't at the moment as there's hundreds of thousands of choices. As a general rule any lightweight (lighter/smaller the better) that is a dome and is rated "outdoor" would work. So far, I've not found what I'd like to see developed for RV or vehicle travel cameras. Something like a tear drop "marker" shaped camera. What I'm using now (because I'm stationary at the moment) is Eufy C2. The other reason that I don't see good cameras for RV's is that most RV owners, won't want to run wires. (Ultimately the best data transfer solution.) So a wireless system is necessary. So....my dream system would be cameras that were small, aero dynamic, and wireless and uses batteries as the 2C's use. The Eufy are great for stationary but I would probably be in the same pickle that I see here. However, he seems to make it work. Since this was commented on he may have changed to something different.

    Those cameras are all powered by 12v DC......you could run one wire from 12v DC on your vehicle and power several cameras. Like one power wire to the front and have it power 4 cameras and one wire to the back for the other 4 cameras. Alternately, you could run network cable to one local hub in the back and one in the front and do PoE. Would clean up those wall warts.

    • @ABQSentinel
      @ABQSentinel 5 років тому +1

      That's a really great idea. I know that if and when I build an RV (stealth van RV is what I'm thinking currently), I would definitely want as many things to be DC powered as possible. In Eric's case, however, he has WAY more power than he needs with his solar system and lithium battery bank, so he's probably not too worried about the wasted power of using AC plugs.

    • @mdrew44628
      @mdrew44628 5 років тому +1

      @@ABQSentinel I am thinking in terms of getting rid of all those switching power supplies......he could daisy chain the four front cameras and the 4 back cameras....he would eliminate the power strips and all those wall warts.....while it would save power, I was thinking more in terms of a cleaner install

    • @ABQSentinel
      @ABQSentinel 5 років тому

      @@mdrew44628 Yeah, I understand. I have previously considered the viability of creating an RV power system that was completely DC. Everything from computers to TVs and monitors could be run off of a DC system with only minor modifications. About the only thing you would need to run on AC power would be an air conditioning and/or microwave oven unit. Although I'm sure if you look hard enough, you could find one that runs on DC, but it's better to be able to use standard AC appliances that can be quickly, easily, and inexpensively replaced on the road. But for that, you could just run a small generator as needed.

    • @mdrew44628
      @mdrew44628 5 років тому +1

      @@ABQSentinel I agree with you about the appliances.....some of the ones that run on low voltage DC are very expensive and with the efficiency of today's inverters, just aren't worth the investment......but if I was building or renovating, I would probably do 80% 12 or 24 volts DC.

    • @ABQSentinel
      @ABQSentinel 5 років тому

      @@mdrew44628 Yeah, that's the other thing... 12VDC or 24VDC. Higher voltage is generally more efficient, but then again, most of the stuff you would be running is already pretty low voltage. As for DC appliances, the other thing that would concern me is that low voltage means you need higher amperage. 1600 watts requires 15 amps at 110 volts, but for a DC appliance, 1600 watts would require in excess of 130 amps at 12 volts. That's going to produce a lot of wasted power in the form of heat.

    I have 4 x Falcon Dash Cams installed in windows as my security system on my RV, bought them off Amazon 4 years ago and they all still work perfectly. They are suction cupped to the windows, ive had them fall off previously, so to fix that i just put a few drops of super glue on glass before suctioning it on and never had them fall afterwards, but can be taken off with a little tug. I have 1 in front windshield, 1 in rear window in bedroom, 1 in left slide window and last one on right side in kitchen window. The wide lens allow them to cover majority of outside pretty well. It was $150 for the 4 dash cameras and $50 for the 4 class 10 SD cards.

  • @grantspitler12

    That NVR and the cameras are powered by 12 volt dc, you could run them from fused connection to the batteries and not through the inverter. On your hotspot and extender you can change them to not broadcast your SSID, you will still be able to connect to them but no one else can see them. I have had a camera system in my travel trailer for years, but mine are hard wire so no one can scramble the camera signals.

    • @garylgoldberg
      @garylgoldberg 5 років тому

      Second the suggestion to disable the station ID (SSID) in any wireless access point -- it's there but not broadcasted.

    • @paulyjunior9130
      @paulyjunior9130 5 років тому +1

      hiding the SSID is indeed safer, but the tradeoff is in potential functionality given many chipsets and/or softwares dont play well with a hidden SSID (not a fault of the 802.x protocol, but of the device firmware programmers). Seen it too many times - even if it works there is no guarantee it will work when something bounces (powers on/off) or creates unexpected failure scenarios. It's arguably just as safe to leave the SSID visible but secure the signal with encryption (preferably WPA2 these days).

    Nicely done Eric. By the way, those are IP Cameras. They don't use BNC cables/connectors. They use ethernet RJ45 connections. If your NVR recorder box has built-in POE ports, you can wire the cameras directly and don't need to use the power adapters for the cameras. Also, you can buy a 5amp 12vdc power adapter to power four or five cameras at the same time. This way you don't need all those separate power supplies.

      I still would not directly feed from the 12V electrical itself. I would use a buck converter (Drok makes some good ones). It will maintain the output voltage and amperage consistently as the input voltage varies with engine on and off (12V ~ 14.4V) & brown outs (like starting the engine).

    It really looks like you had fun with this project and that is always good when a project is fun! I actually don't think the antennas look bad at all and in some ways are a bit of extra detergent if just from a security standpoint. The data they have collected shows that that security systems that 'bad guys' identify as wireless are often avoided as they know its not an easy 'off' to just pull or cut wires. Of course with yours they would have no way to know that they are wires for power so its less likely they are to go after a system that they don't think they can easily disable. The antenna are also obviously part of the system and so look like they should be there and so are not obnoxious looking.

    IT major here, Great system! I just don't know how well the wireless would hold up, Because the cameras are more than likely using the 2.4 Ghz spectrum. Same Frequency WiFi uses. 8 camera at 1080p each would definitely put some traffic on that Frequency. It may affect speeds on your AT&T hotspot. It also may get worse if you're in heavily populated area with everyone around you watching streaming services causing heavy traffic on the 2.4 Ghz band. I wouldn't surprise me if a few of the cameras would drop a connection here and there due to that. This is another reason why wireless cameras get a bad rap. If push came to shove, you could hardwired Ethernet them to the DVR to prevent any interference.
    I'm sorry to sound negative, just expressing my concerns. Feel free to let me know if you need any help!

      The cameras appear to be using a variable bitrate, which you can see towards the end of the video in the top left hand corner on his phone. I never understand why people use bandaid solutions by using the Netgear Extender with their hotspot, when AT&T, Peplink, Cradlepoint, and many others make routers designed for RVs and mobile environments, WITH Ethernet ports. As long as nothing was messed with on the Hotspot or Netgear device, they should automatically pick the best channel (non-overlapping). But for the layman, they wouldn’t have the slightest clue what that setting does.

      No. The cameras are constant frame rate recorded to the HD and on viewer. It's just the transfer over the internet to my phone that skips frames to keep live video in tact.

    Something to consider re the slide. Take it to a good welding shop. Ask if they could put a new piece of the gear track ( weld ) just where it's worn out. While still on the MH. I'm not a professional welder but i am certain it could be done. I would do it on mine.

    Hey Eric, you should swap that HDD to an SSD (or a few hooked up from a separate enclosure). Even shock-resistant HDDs are not going to last very long in a bumpy RV, they can literally shatter from a small speed bump if they happen to be spinning at that time.

    That hole on the base is for routing the wire out if your not mounting it over the hole in the wall, not for moisture release. You find that driving down the road in the rain will push water right into those holes.

    Aiya, I wouldn’t get these cameras if I were you. I would get POE dome cameras. Power over ethernet cameras give you less wiring and do not have antennas sticking out. POE dome cameras look better. Also, a hole on a camera base is for wire going out. If you don’t need wire to go out, then seal it. Imagine you drive 60 mph, and keep hitting those holes.

    Eric, even though there are a drain holes in the mounting plate of the camera. You should still put a bead of silicone around each hole you drilled. I noticed you made the holes pretty big, you might want to consider getting a silicone gasket to place behind each camera to help make it better sealed from water and air. Good luck with the project. Happy Birthday!! Also hope Jax is feeling better.

    Note: Chances are that the cameras don't need 110V, the wall warts are probably 12V, could run the cams right off the battery/solar... The other thing to think of is that the wireless is no boundries, so there are opportunities for others to see the internal cameras... And with the QRCode in the video, I may be able to see your NVR, have not tried.

    8:36 The "hole at the bottom" is to run the wire from behind the camera mount to surface mount the wire from the camera to a structure. That "hole" is not there to weep water, it is a cable pass through.

    I have some thoughts about putting silicone around your cameras . Put silicone around the top and the sides but leave the bottom open. The idea is to keep water from getting in but don't stop it from getting out if some does get in that's why you leave onpening on bottom just a thought
