Tim did a great job on this, but please, let's not forget Eddie Rayner's magnificent piano/keyboards/orchestration of this song. It's all that, for me, which gives it its impact.
Whimsy and humor, two words that often cross my mind when listening to Eddie. He's necessary to the sound and has a unique style. And is capable of (playing) just about anything.
One of these days, Split Enz songs will start appearing all over Netflix show soundtracks and they will be discovered by a whole new generation. That or TikTokers will. Caught my teen daughters walking around singing an old Kate Bush song recently, and they've never even heard of her.
Some will act as if they’re the first to discover, fully appreciate and understand it. Every generation has done that. If it opens up kids ears to old gems, well good luck to em I guess, some will go down the rabbit hole and get right into it.
Life is no fun when you're haunted by the the things you feel..... . It's a shame it took me decades to work out, but I figured it out so better late than never.
One of the most emotionally painful and haunting songs set to sweeping and beautiful music EVER written! I LOVE IT! That freakin piano! It emotionally and physically moves me!
It's not a mystery. Thank whoever or whatever lead to to this music. The world is bigger than the good old US of A. This band was one of the best in the world. The Finns are of world renown. It is a gift to you to have found them. No need to compare to others. Just enjoy and be glad. Each is incomparable and we in Australia and New Zealand have enjoyed them for 50 or so years. Happy for you and others that you appreciate them so much.
This was filmed at Ripponlea (National Trust Estate) in Melbourne …. My mum was Manager of Ripponlea at the time and I watched the filming in the ballroom. She had to stay with them overnight whilst filming & she used to say how “she spent the night with Split Enz”…. Lovely memory.

Tim Finn's voice is sublime ❤ And what a beautiful lyricist. I was 12 yrs old when this album was released in Oz and it blew my mind. How blessed was I to be a teenager in the 80s ❤❤❤
I went to NZ and Australia in one summer when I was 12 or 13. I got really sick on the plane trip from NZ to OZ. That didn't stop me from enjoying Australia. I bit as many Marsupials as would get close enough. That's why you have HPV there.
I lived that song, heart destroyed, wondered and fretted what to do if we ran into each other on the streets, moved to another city, ... but I was the one who went through the devastation, not her.
😭Hauntingly beautiful and sung with such emotion by Tim. Eddie's deft piano playing falls like rain on a lonely, stormy night. I miss you so much HP....
They interest me greatly…. You have this song…..then it devolves into crowded house, where it sounds like a back yard garage jam, with the same quality and cheap, barely scratching the surface harmonies…. What went wrong ..
I cannot believe I did not truly appreciate the beauty of this gorgeously haunting song and the talent of the lovely Tim Finn and Split Enz, back in the day. Thank God I have discovered them again before it is my time to leave this earth.
A very powerful an emotional song from Split Enz. It strikes deep into the soul. I am so glad Neil Finn was able to continue the band after Tim's departure.
Just a few nights ago, watching Tim Finn singing this over piano with his daughter at the Sydney Opera House..pure magic. Songwriting and performing arts at its best❤
Just became aware of this hauntingly beautiful song this year 2020 while listening to split enz station on pandora. I always thought it was Neil singing. I can't get it out of my head, I love everything about it!💗💗💗💗😍
Tim’s voice is otherworldly, there is something about it that catches you in the solar plexus, and grips your heart. Tim is really special. I don’t think that he ever had the success that he deserved.
I thought Neil sang everything! I never saw any videos of Split Enz and then Crowded House came out and I found out it was Neil's group after Split Enz. I'm glad I found these videos!
@@JefAlanLong That's fine. Never heard of Split Enz until that album. They weren't a big deal in the states. Just letting people know how little someone might know back then. No internet. No cable (where I lived).
I fell in love with this song as a very young teen when i saw them do it flawlessly live on a late night show called FRIDAYS in eary 80's. As an entertainer/musician/writer,i am shocked and actually touched that so many of you love and appreciate this song. It definitely is a hauntingly captivating melody.
Listening to this, I’m 17 again, heading off to America for a year on exchange, scared out of my wits, and armed with my copy of True Colours, to show those Texans what real music sounds like.
Thank you Tim Finn for playing this live at the Big Red Bash Simpson Desert last month, you absolutely made my day 💕 Its my favourite Split Enz song along with Message to my Girl.
How to time travel in one easy lesson. Load up I Hope I Never, hear the first note and bang I’m 17 and it’s 1980 just like that....amazing. Every little thing comes back.
Growning up in New Zealand Listing to your Music has left lots of memories in My life. 1994 I watched you live in Sydney in a Taven on Parramatta Rd, The best thing was going back stage meeting you, on your break, your back up singer was James he was a friend of the family. Who done a lot of work with Tina arena and hey hey its Saturday , In saying that Split Enz were awesome!
I secretly loved Split Enz back in the day, but it was uncool to tell that to my metalhead friends. Hearing this track, so many years later, only proves it to be a genuine evergreen. What songwriting, and what vocals!
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written. I remember buying True Colours after hearing Shark Attack and falling in love with the whole record. Finally seeing the band at the old Ritz in NYC I was not disappointed; I could see and hear that the skills heard on the record were "real". As the decades have passed since then, of course, other music and artists pushed Split Enz back into memory; but somehow, this song stayed in my head all this time. Even if I hadn't listened to the record for years, I'd hear this song in my head at least once a week, if not every day. It somehow touches something very personal inside me on an emotional level, whilst simultaneously stimulating my intellect on a musical level (as a musician myself). It has a certain "intrigue" inside of it. To me it's sheer genius in the simplest terms; which is how genius is best expressed. It's been a great comfort to me all these years, and I thank Tim and everyone involved for making it part of my perception of reality. Truly.
Incredible song. Thank you, CJNE 94.7 in Nipawin for making me aware of it. Never got enough air play in north America, compared with "I got you" and "One step ahead"... (also great songs), but this one has to be the best one from Split Enz, in my opinion.
What a blissfully sad and emotional experience this song is with Tim's angelic voice and that ethereal piano by Eddie Rayner if you are going through a painful breakup!

This in one of the best songs ever written. Just beautiful and the video is perfect for it too. A genuine sublime piece of art that everyone involved should be proud.
Love this song.... it's very emotional and so often true of a few relationships I once had. Though it's sad to think people can relate to this in real life, I admit I have sung it about several people through the years and still find myself singing it around the house now and then!! LOL. ❣

That violin sweep into the chorus is why he's a musical genius
Eddie Rayner, who did the orchestration? Indeed he was.
