  • Another video from a comment request. Keep em coming!
    I don't mention it verbally at all, but the routing is Deepmind out to MPC in, and MPC out to MIDI in. Seems implied to me but I should still have mentioned it.
    A crash course in what midi is and what it does in the context of these 2 devices.
    This was off the cuff, and I left out plenty, maybe an advanced setup video is in order as well?

    Kind of late here, but it's great video! I have a Q about the 1k, that thru online searching, has brought me here to youtube comments. When you're recording midi notes, is the length of the note represented on the 1k's grid? I can only get each note to show up as a 1/8 (or maybe 1/16th) note no matter how long or short I play them! Cant tell if its a my MPC problem or thats just how it is. The actual midi however, is how long the note is played, so audio wise it's correct, but the grid representation is always a one shot length sample.
    I was watching your video and it looks like the midi notes are different lengths for each note, but I couldn't be sure, if you ever get around to reading this.... Thanks!!

    Thank you for the video. Couple of questions :
    - can the sound design controls on the top be used as controller for a VST or a synth ?
    - though I know the Deepmind itself is mono-timbral, is there a way to split it and have it sending half of the keybed’s notes to an external synth (say I want to connect a moog for the bass on the left hand and play along with it on the right hand).
    Thanks.

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  3 роки тому +2

      1. Yes! You could send midi cc from the controllers on the deepmind into a daw, and map that midi to a vst. Juno vst's would have a very similar layout and scope of parameters.
      2. Not in the deepmind alone, but you can turn local midi off in the deepmind, and then route its keyboard through something that does the splitting, daw or another hardware unit.
      I don't work in the box much at all, but I'm sure some tool exists to route / filter midi that way.

    You are the best Jorb! Dude, I could listen to you talk about synths all day. Please make a video or explain to me how to get the DeepMind 12 to be a slave to an external devices tempo. I use my Boss RC 505 mkii as my master clock and daisy chain to all my other synths. It goes: RC 505, Tr-8, DeepMind, xv-88, RE-202, GT-6. Every single device on the daisychain syncs up to the 505’s clock but the DeepMind. I feel stupid that I can’t figure this out. Please help if you can Jorb! If not, no matter white you’re still my favorite to watch and listen to about synthesizes! Please please please create a podcast! I’ve listen to every episode! Much love from South Dakota!

      Deepmind has options for arp sync that let you choose the internal clock, or midi, and then the rate slider becomes a time division, if you've got it on midi sync, it might be synced but on a weird division

    Hi. I can get midi data between my MPC and keyboard. But how do I get keyboard patches to the MPC? I see the movement and data but no sounds

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  3 роки тому

      What do you mean keyboard patches onto the MPC? The MPC can play back recorded bits of sound, as samples, or record and play back midi information, which is performance data that needs to be transmitted to something that can put out sound, a synth or module.

    This was a really great tutorial, but I’m having an issue that I’m still unable to resolve. My problem is if I record a loop on track one of my MPC, using channel 1 of my Korg Minilogue, and MPC midi channel 1A , as soon as I change my Korg Minilogue from channel 1 to channel 2, so that I can prepare to create a second layer of music on a new track, the sound from my first track that was using channel 1 stops. I can’t seem to play multiple channels from my keyboard simultaneously. As soon as I change to a new channel, the sound from the previous channel cuts off, which prevents me from creating multiple layers of music with multiple tracks on the MPC. Would you have an idea of why this might be?

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  3 роки тому

      The minilogue will only be able to receive on one midi channel at a time, can only play one patch at once, and has a hard limit of four simultaneous voices(notes). So multi tracking with midi might not be the way to get where you want. Think of midi as data playing the keys instead of your fingers, the same hardware limitations still exist.
      You can multi track its audio though! If you're using jjos, you could run in stereo to the record in of the MPC, to an audio track(scroll down on "Drum") and do everything the same and get unique tracks of sound captured in the mpc.
      If you aren't using jjos, (I think) record each take like a sample with the metronome, cut the beginning off, line them up at the start of a track and go that way.
      Good luck!

      Ah, man. What a bummer. I just bought this keyboard in hopes that this would work. I’m surprised to hear this. I have a few questions, if you don’t mind.
      1) Can I record one midi track at a time, and just use one channel? I'm actually not even sure how I would save what I’ve recorded as midi, because it seems like if I don’t have the keyboard connected to the MPC, all I’ll have are blank midi notes. How does one save a midi track, so that they can load it in the future without needing the keyboard?
      2) If I record the audio in the way that you’ve suggested would it still be time synced via midi, or would it just be audio with no sync of any kind?
      3) Why does the Minilogue have 16 midi channels if you can’t use more than one at a time? Doesn’t seem like it makes sense to me.
      Thanks for your help. I appreciate it!

      @@F_letc.h
      1) Can I record one midi track at a time, and just use one channel?
      I'll address these separately, there are multi timbral midi modes in JJOs, not sure about the stock os, that will let midi channels correspond to the same number track, but I dont think thats what you're after.
      Can you use just one channel at a time : on the MPC : no, you can sequence several.
      On the minilogue : yes, it can only receive midi data on one channel at a time.
      2) How does one save a midi track, so that they can load it in the future without needing the keyboard?
      You can save sequences on the mpc, which is a collection of tracks, which can be midi on the MPC by hitting MODE -> SAVE(text near a pad) -> do it.
      Those midi sequences wont make any sound unless they are sent to a device on the correct channel that can do something with midi, like your minilogue, but without a sound generating device, MIDI is just the recorded keypresses. Think of it as sheet music even, that can be sent to a device that knows how to read it.
      2) If I record the audio in the way that you’ve suggested would it still be time synced via midi, or would it just be audio with no sync of any kind?
      Good question, it would be recorded just as you've played it, so only as good as your timing. With JJOS audio tracks, the recording will start precisely in time with the sequence its on, which has a tempo and includes midi time clock. If you change the tempo of your track after recording, your audio recording wont be in time any more, and you'll need to re-record or discard that part.
      3) Why does the Minilogue have 16 midi channels if you can’t use more than one at a time?
      Midi devices have 16 channels so that they can pick their information out from that of 15 other sound sources.
      If you had a midi chain of a sequencer out to a sound module, then thru to 15 more devices, you could send midi notes for each sound module through the one chain, and each would only play the messages tagged with their respective channels.
      Let me know if that helps clear things up.
      Does your MPC have the stock OS?

      Thanks again for your help. Just a couple more questions, and then I’ll be out of your hair.
      1) You said midi notes won’t make a sound without a sound generating device. So, do you have to reconnect your keyboard to your MPC every time you load a song that has midi notes in it? Is there not a way that people save their songs, so that they don’t have to reconnect these devices every time they want to listen to their recordings again?
      I’m using JJOS 2XL, and I love it. It’s a remarkable OS, for a 15 year old sampler.

    • @JorbLovesGear

      @@F_letc.h Is there not a way that people save their songs, so that they don't have to reconnect these devices every time they want to listen to their recordings again?
      There is, and it would be recording it as audio!
      Probably a simpler answer than you were hoping. But to reiterate, midi information is not sound, it's the sheet music for a synth to create music from.
      You can record audio tracks into the mpc like it were a daw or a casette recorder, and they can be totally contained on the mpc.
      Or you can think of it as a device that records your keypresses and plays them back, just as if you were playing the module yourself.
      The benefit of using midi over audio, you can manipulate tempo, edit individual keypresses, manipulate the synth patch after you've recorded a clip or even send it to a different sound module.
