  • A quick walk through / demonstration of my hardware workflow, with the MPC 1000 as the heart of my set up.
    I never mention it on camera, but the MPC is running JJos 2xl, although most of the principles apply to free JJos at least, and likely stock too. Maybe I'll go into closer detail with just the MPC.
    Everything you see I purchased used on reverb or ebay.
    Even though it's almost 15 years since it's release, the MPC1000 is still a very strong 'brain' for a hardware setup. Sampling, sequencing external gear, acting as it's own sound source, all with a logical work flow.

    Thanks for this, I bought a 1000 a while back but while I enjoy it’s “playability” I seldom use it out of laziness really, but I’ve been meaning to include it more as a main sequencer too, I just haven’t looked well into the midi setup. This motivates me to do it. Nice jam 👏👏👏

    Wow!! your rig looks uncannily similar to what I´m building right now for a new live set! So glad to see I´m not crazy and that people are making wonderful music with an MPC1000 at the centre of their live set up. I´m grappling with the complexity of learning to use the machine live, i.e triggering sequences and drum tracks while singing and playing keyboards - I feel like an octopus most of the time and my brain is fried from all the multitasking! I´d love to hear some tips on simplifying things to save cognitive bandwidth, so to speak. So if you did a series on this kind of use for the MPC you´d be doing a lot of us a massive favour, man. By the way, congratulations, you´re sounding great!!!

      Thank you! I've been looking for a deal on a reface Dx for awhile. Wondering if a longer series on the mpc would be worth doing at this point, it's old but still killer. And there's a whole lot to unpack.

      Jorb the reface DX sounds great and it’s super dense. It can cover a ton of ground and every time I dig into it I find something new to try. Plus soundmondo is a great tool for finding user patches to tweak for all the refaces.
      Curious about your MPC sounds - what were the stock sounds like when you got it and where do you source most of your sounds?

      2000xl is more vibe than features, if you ask me.
      I'm a big fan of the 1000, but tutorials can be a little difficult to find.
      Now that i've matured in my filming and editing, i should sit down and do something focused on the 1k.

    Hi. My setup is quite similar and I agree that mpc1000 can be used extensively as the hardware setup core part.
    1 thing - I used to be able to record the video together with sound directly from my Behringer mixer via usb plug and play slot and otg adapter into my phone (open camera app).
    It was super convenient but seems to not work anymore.
    Most likely due to some android changes but I'm not sure.
    How is it with Roland go and your setup now?

    Hey Jorb, I have extreme beginner issues with midi. I just want to get the midi-out from the DJM-900nxs2 to be clock provider for RD-8 drum machine. Any good resources?

    • @audreyazwell
      @audreyazwell 3 роки тому +1

      I know this is old but I do know for a fact the RD8 can be synced to an external midi clock. However I'm not familiar with the other piece of gear. I'm not sure if you'd have to set that one up or anything (I'd assume not). But it SHOULD be as straight forward as plugging the MIDI Out to the MIDI In of the RD8 and setting the parameters to external clock, which 1. I believe you can actually do in the synth software and 2. Is one of those options by the tempo knob, you have to shift through some options first (lite menu diving).
      Hope this helps anyone coming across this or the OP.

    Funky little jam...and nice video. I have a question: How do you store program changes on the MPC? I like the workflow, but is it easy to recall synth sounds on the MPC?

  • @stephenhare7369
    @stephenhare7369 5 років тому +1

    Super helpful. I had never heard of the Roland Go:Mixer Pro before. I also had forgotten about Local Midi off for synths - very useful concept. I have looked at every sequencer/sampler imaginable and it seems like the MPCs are still the only game in town...and unfortunately I haven't heard as good things about the rock solid timing with the Live. What are your thoughts on the 1000? Did you consider any others? Finally, how's recording automation (filters etc)? Thanks for putting this up! And I'm guessing you are Canadian!!

    Local off on DM12 then midi in from MPC1000, keys work obviously, but what about sliders and menus? Thank you for this :)

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  5 років тому

      All of the deepmind sound control stays controlling the deepmind, think as if the keyboard and synth were seperate units.
      So a sequence from the mpc can be controlling the deepmind, while I have
      control of those sounds, and I can use the deepmind keyboard to control another unit, etc etc.
      Thanks for asking!

      I know some are for 2 or 3 band headphone cables, and would try and get 'left & right' from different points on the jack.
      But if you know the cable works, and you know the cable works with the ipod, it should work with the mpc. Make sure gain is set appropriately

Other than that there’s a splitter cable on MPCStuff.com that can be used on any MPC supposedly . I just emailed them if there’s requirements or if I need JJOS. Probably get the response tomorrow. Thanks for the advice :)

    Have you had any issues with your external midi controller triggering the internal samples of the mpc and the external synth simultaneously? I’m having trouble toggling that on and off so my external midi controller records on its individual midi track and doesn’t trigger drum sound located in other “drum tracks”. Any thing helps. Great video.

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  5 років тому +2

      Yes! Make sure you don't have a program on the channels that are midi tracks, sometimes it loads a default one and it'll have samples on it.
      And depending on your software jjos etc, you can do multitimbral midi, and that will direct different channels to different tracks on the MPC. So you want to say leave the mpc focused on track 1 with your samples and play it with the pads, and then a channel 2 midi signal coming in and controlling MPC's track two, which direct to your external gear.
      Reading it back. Complicated. Lol
      Maybe another video? 😁
