Southern Thai are filled with Malays. Thai monarch and kedah monarch are cousins during Buddhist era. Kedah became Muslim kingdom, Thai stayed Buddhist. The border kept moving a few times and Thai had the upper hand when the British came in. But due to independence the British took back half of the Muslim the northern(Malay)/southern(Thai perspectives) territories which made into Malaya during the independence after WW2. There were a few kingdoms like Patani which remained in Thai kingdom hands. Kedah Malay royalty still are invited to Thai royal weddings and like wise and you can see younger prince and princess coming to the elder to bow and show respect even when they are actually the top echelon of Thai high society. All the people who have identity cards from the border states to Thai, don't need a passport to go to Thailand. They just register for a border pass, because pre WW2. They were governed by the Thai government before joining Malaya for independence.
@@TravelsonToast when the British came, they made double dealings with both kedah and Thai kingdom. Which resulted in the Thai army reaching Langkawi and Kuala kedah during perang bisik(war of the whispers). Before retreating Langkawi rice granaries were burnt. This happened 200years ago. If you go to Langkawi today. Some places if you dig a bit below the soil. You can still find charred pieces of rice from that event. There is even a beach called beras terbakar(burnt rice). Because the beach has black sand. The fall of the kedah sultanate created the first British colonial port in south east Asia known as Penang. Which continued to the perak war, where the first time gurkha's made their name in the British empire - fighting in the mountains in negeri sembilan when the British guns were outmaneuvered by the Malay armies. The perak war allowed the Malay kingdoms to fight the redcoats to a stalemate and forced the British empire to sign a treaty called pangkor treaty. This is the reason why all malays are by law Muslim. Because the malays are the members of the sultanate, and others are citizens of the British. By being Muslim, the sultans can collect zakat, while the British collect tax. An agreement written in the treaty. Also the reason why Malaysia has good relations with the Japanese government.
