  • We're in Melaka or Malacca, a historical city here in Malaysia well known for it's famous and very authentic Malay curry dish called Asam Pedas. The most popular dish is Asam Pedas Ikan Pari which is a spicy and sour stingray fish curry. This is our first time trying stingray and fish egg Asam Pedas claypot in Malaysia and it's got to be the most intense Malay meal we've had so far in Malaysia... our reaction as foreigners to this Asam Pedas says it all.

Both you and Olivia started of with a bang! Stingray asam pedas is certainly one of my favourite. Now go for barbecued stingray wrapped in banana leaf, hot and spicy, And yes the bones are chewy and it is ok to eat them. Olivia"s description of the fish eggs' taste is just fitting - metallic, Have fun exploring what Melaka has to offer especially the deserts.

A lot of tourist would call dddifferent broth-like dish in Malaysia as curry, but in Malaysia curry is just a different dish... careful don't order wrong dish because sometime locals could get confused if you say curry. And the rules of mixing when eating rice and dish in Malaysia is that, its not necessary to mix all type of dish in one bite, its more like you choose what you want to taste in one spoon...btw Happy eating and safe travel guys

Ooooooooh! Asam Pedas! Yeah fish egg definitely isn't for everyone. Especially on your first go! Most of us go for sting ray or mackerel. However, the lime, citrus sour taste of the broth is exactly what you would look for in Asam Pedas. So the broth in the fish egg pot would be closer to what we locals enjoy in the dish. Not necessarily the fish egg itself. There are two major kinds of fish eggs usually cooked with the dish. This tiny lumpy brain looking egg is from the Spanish mackerel (ikan tenggiri) and if you order the larger looking fish eggs, the ones that look like little pearls, those are from the marine catfish (ikan mayong)
Both fish eggs/roe are very fishy in taste. So won't suit everyone. Just like caviar or Japanese roe in sushi.
Btw, I LOVE British blood pudding! I guess south east Asians have a natural high tolerance for fishy flavours/scents. Can't take the smell of cheese, butter, or dairy though. Haha. Enjoy your travels and keep the videos coming! Love your honest reactions!

Love the insight and hope you keep exploring our little wonderful country!

You right the stingray meat is like chicken and actually the bones itself is edible if you didn’t know. I hope one day I have the opportunity to try both these dishes. Like most fish delicacies they are cooked in varieties of ways and styles especially here in South East Asian compare to anywhere in the world. With Stingray the bones are actually edible which add to a different kind of taste which sadly u missed out on it. I muz say that when comes to Asam Pedas be noted that the taste may differs a little from one place or state to another albeit the looks is the same. Deep red chili colored hot tantalizing! As for the fish egg i can agree with u its not the common favourite of everyone even the locals but it is the most unique in many perspectives.. its the kind of thing that if u like it u love it, thats it! One important bud tasting thing to note is that when comes to almost all Malaysian especially Malays dishes is that it has to be taken with rice. Yes with rice. Thats why most of the gravy are thick and rich, to compliment the rice. Note - if u can keep up and okay with all the dishes u had so far in Malaysia, with more to come, im pretty sure u can live, food wise, in any South East Asian country if u choose to.

Initially in the olden days when people fish at the river or the sea , fish eggs are some sort of luxury dish if they happen to catch the fish having eggs during certain season. Yes, just like you enjoy caviar. At the market we can either buy the fish having eggs in the belly or at times they are sold separately. The way of cooking is different from one place to another or simply the way you want it to be cooked. Sometimes it is simply rubbing the fiag eggs with powdered turmeric + salt and fry them or made into coconut yellow gravy, curry or asam pedas. Please don't feel guilty.. it's just one of the locals delicacies.
As for the stingray it's one of the deep sea catches. Stingrays differ in size and types and the big ones are most delicious and expensive of course. Only the outer parts or wings(we call it) of the stingrays can normally be eaten for the tenderness and sweetness of the flesh. I'd suggest that you try grilled stingray for its pure taste which comes together with tamarind dip. One of the favourite is asam pedas.
Thank you for your effort and sincerity in your comments and humbleness upon trying to explore and accept our multiracial culture and traditions. Thank you for the appreciation. Hope you'll always enjoy your stay in Malaysia. Do enjoy our traditional kuih, biscuits and snacks too!

that area is famous for asam pedas. there are even naan bread and Northern Indian food there but they only open in the evening. the asam pedas arrived quickly because it is pre made. they heated it in the claypot quickly before serving. dish with fish usually tangy to remove the fishy taste

I love asam pedas.. I love ikan pari n fish egg. But I prefer ikan mayong's fish egg. The eggs are bigger kinda like salmon egg but it has their own flavour
