    Rise is my 7th attempt at a MH game. I've only tried so many times due to friends and family pushing me to try each new iteration. But I've always had a lot of critiques I won't get into here. That said, thanks to the fun that came with riding on a dog, the Wirebug grapple hook, a decent amount of friends who are helping add to the social aspect of the game, and finally: this 10/10 tutorial: I'm actually playing through a Monster Hunter game for the first time and loving every minute of it.
    Thanks to your tutorial, I've risen through the ranks from noob hunter to HR 7. I've even recently switched out the Advancing Slash for the Sliding Slash, and it's a lot of fun! Absolutely love SnS, and learning it at the beginning of the game with the help of this tutorial has helped me gain confidence in my hunting skills, and has helped me enjoy the game to the fullest. Thank you so much!

    Just one thing that wasn't mentioned about backhop: what happens what you don't press/hold any button outside the initial input. No additional input results in advancing slash, which was shown. If you keep holding backwards, however, your hunter will neither jump or advancing slash forward, but instead stay back and slash upward. It can be useful for repositioning or not committing to the attack if moving forward puts you in danger.

    I spent around a 1000 hours in world/iceborne only playing bow, I finally decided its time to learn all the weapons in rise and these guides have been a godsend. Perfect explanation of all the basics to just pick up a weapon and start hunting without feeling lost, thanks.

    Oh my god, I finally understand this weapon now, the perfect rush bro, I could never understand how it was supposed to work, I didn’t realise how few inputs it needed to actually perform, I thought you literally had to perfectly time every single slash

    Honestly the best the SnS has ever been. So versatile, and ridiculously fun to use.
    Honestly, its practically a perfectly realized weapon in Rise.
    It would be perfect if they brought back Oils though.

      I'm a scrub and new from World. What oils? I'm assuming they'd add elemental damage or something? Similar to coats for bow? That would be cool but why won't they come back from whichever game they were in?

    • @smashbrolink
      @smashbrolink 3 роки тому +9

      @@MatyFattyDaddy
      Oils were from Generations & Gen Ultimate; there were 4 initial types, Affinity [30% affinity], Destroyer [same as the part breaker armor skill], mind's eye [same as the skill, no weapon bounces] and Exhaust [KO damage to ALL of your attacks, lots of stuns on monsters].
      There was a 5th type, chaos oil, that basically added all the oil types at once for a little while, and STACKED with one more oil of any other type that you applied while it was active.
      The catch was that Chaos Oil wasn't an item; it was a skill that you had to build meter to apply.
      If it were in Rise, it'd be equivalent to a 2-bug-use Wirebug skill.
      Anyways, oils were AMAZING.
      They drastically upped the roles an SnS could play in a hunt, and made them stand toe to toe with bigger, harder-hitting weapons in the right hands.
      If Oils returned in Rise, I shudder to think of how strong SnS players would become...

    • @pockystyx4087
      @pockystyx4087 3 роки тому +3

      @@MatyFattyDaddy Oils are from Generations and Generations Ultimate. There were no elemental types, but they did modify your damage in interesting ways. There was Mind's Eye; Stun, Part Breaker, and Affinity Oils that could be applied for a short time. These were like coatings too, since you had to buy/craft them.
      In GenU you got access to the Chaos Oil Hunter Art (basically Silkbind skills older brother). Chaos Oil let you apply all Oils at once; while also doing a dash attack on activation. It was amazingly powerful; but to get the best version of the skill (level III) you needed to fight a duo hunt with Hyper Gold Rathian and Hyper Silver Rathalos. Needless to say, they made it a challenge to get it! lol

    I think they once said that the longsword is the new beginner weapon,
    "since the SNS has evolved into a more complex weapon, it's hard to recommend to new players"
    It also explains why the longsword has more emphasis in the begining (character creation voice tests, starting off with LS)
    As well as story (the hand-me-down LS)
    So the LS is the new beginner weapon imo

      I started with MH world and I felt like that since then cuz it seemed so forgiving with the, what feels like 100 foresight slash. Then the Iai spirit slash not consuming a charge anymore if you miss and still boosting you one if you connect.... ultimate offensive and defensive weapon 🤷

      SnS still has all the properties that made it a good beginner weapon: fast noncommital attacks, access to a block if you need it, and using items without sheathing. It just now has additional options to use as you become more skilled.
      But yes, the game seems to be pushing longsword as the default weapon now.

    • @QwertYuiop-yt3uh
      @QwertYuiop-yt3uh 3 роки тому

      I think they do that mostly because of the Japanese theme of the game and how the LS is based off the katana. Like how in previous games they start you off with SnS in this game it's LS. Also they know that LS is just straight up the most popular weapon. However, based on what experienced learning as much as I can about every weapon, I would have to say it's HH thats the easiest now in Rise. The LS actually imo used to be way easier in previous games and now it has the tricky special sheathe and foresight slash/Iai round slash countering shenanigans that is definitely not easy for beginners. Sure you don't need those to play the weapon you can just press buttons but you could say that for any weapon too.
      The easiest weapon by far has been HH. It has been dramatically simplified in Rise so you don't even have to think about the notes, just press buttons and that's it. Just your attacks that auto play without any complex note patterns just XX, AA, XA XA. Like you have the moves and that's it, all you gotta know is what is magnificent trio and infernal melody lol and those are very simple mechanics

    14:55 Just wanted to confirm that the Falling Bash used out of Charged Slash CANNOT hit twice. Only the bashes out of Perfect Rush and Falling Shadow get the second hit.
    Combined with the fact that you can’t use Piercing Thrust out of Charged Slash, it seems Capcom wanted to make the Charged Slash route a strictly worse finisher compared to Perfect Rush. It’s basically only for those situations where you think that you can greed for a little more damage than a Spinning Reaper finish but don’t have enough time for even a rushed Perfect Rush combo. The numbers aren’t great, but blunt damage to the head is still blunt damage to the head.

    Here are a few tips I know about and probably wasn't mention in the video.
    Shield attacks - does KO and exhaust damage, doesn't bounce AND doesn't consume sharpness.
    Drill Slash - deal more elemental and status damage (1.5) but less part break damage (0.5)
    Windmill - deal less elemental (0.7), status (0.5) and part break damage. Doesn't matter thou... still very strong skill for cutting tails and dealing elemental damage.
    Sliding Slash - has 1 or maybe even 2 invincibility frames. One of them happens before the jump when you connect with the target.
    Metsu Shoryugeki - does insane amount of KO damage with potential to KO several monster with just on execution. Also multiple hits on counter always hit the part you've countered even if the monster has moved away.

Of course you don't have to do the combo, but this combo will save you from having to count the time until the bomb detonates.large bomb deal more domage and easier. small is handy. Big one is best. When you get used to this combo, you can detonate big bomb without hit monster and hit only your shoryugeki to the monster. This technic is usefull when monster sleeping. I'm having a blast with SNS in Rise, to my surprise actually, I honestly was one of those who thought this was a very basic, boring beginner-weapon and just ignored it kinda. I tried and played around with all of the other weapons for multiple hunts in the lower ranks first but kept going back to SNS out of curiosity. Now it's my main for sure and it is so much fun and super versatile when you actually start to get the hang of all the moves and everything you can do with it ^^

    I know this is a super old video, and let me first start by saying thank you because this vid really helped me understand the weapon much better. MHR is my first game in the series and I just started. The only thing that might be cool to know as well about it that wasn’t shown in the vid was how you can guard and use an item without the weapon needing to be sheathed. But other than that this is an amazing helpful guide so thank you!

    Great video, I’m loving SnS in rise. One other thing to consider with when choosing shield bash or metzu shoriugeki (sp?) is sharpness. In my opinion, sharpness management is a big deal when trying to keep the pressure up with SnS.
    That shield bash and metzu can be done over and over without dulling your weapon. Then you can save sharpness for the spinning reaper and perfect rush. There are so many ways to play the weapon, but this has been a way I enjoy playing lately. I feel like those shield attacks hep you stay in the fight

    • @zackschofield4240
      @zackschofield4240 8 місяців тому

      I have noticed as a new player 2 years removed from the vid that you can use items while guarding without having to sheath the weapon. Seems to be kinda nice if you either don’t run a Doggo or don’t want to run too far away. But it’s definitely my preference to keep the shield bash and use the windmill wire skill since I don’t really like having to sharpen very often if I don’t need to.

    Metsu Shoryugeki guard point also triggers Offensive Guard, increasing the damage. All hits going up seem to be KO damage, not just Falling Bash, to clarify. It's a ton of KO damage in a small window. It can also be used on roars and projectiles for the hardcore.

    • @TripleB87
      @TripleB87 3 роки тому

      This is how I use it. I swapped the shield bash combo out for drill bash, but I run anja gloves (AB2 + ... 2 levels in slugger iirc), so I use metsu for the stun damage. Even if I'm not guard pointing something, it can still be weaved into the end of a perfect rush combo just for extra KO damage. I use it a lot on the last boss when it falls down to try to fish for the KO. Of course, I'll usually slide in into falling shield slam and do a two-hit A combo into XA slash into drill slash into spinning reaper into backhop perfect rush into non-guarded metsu. It stays down long enough to do all that, it's ridiculous, and I'll *usually* (not always) get a KO after that and that lets me usually do another entire rotation on it's head minus the metsu at the end.
      Also, it usually just instantly KOs whatever I use it on if I hit their head with the opener and slam. Anjanath especially is susceptible to this. I metsu when he does his breath attack, which always parries it, hits the head a ton, and then into the shield slam, of course. (Disclaimer: only for the first KO in a hunt).
      I also did it in a pile of monsters once and I swear I sat on the ground for a solid three seconds just hitting everything around me before actually shooting into the air lol.
      The windmill might be better for damage (use on CD vs fish for easy parry), but goddamn does metsu feel good when you pull it off.

    Btw Sliding Slash actually has I-frames in the beginning of the slide. You can basically slide “under” certain attacks like fireballs. Also if you’re good at using the Falling Bash and Metsu Shoryugeki for stunning you won’t need to use the shield bash, meaning you can run drill which does more damage (higher motion values) than the shield combo.

    • @50Personas
      @50Personas 3 роки тому +1

      All of this is exactly why I ended up settling with Sliding Slash, Drill and Metsu regardless of the monster or weapon. Metsu does lots of stunning damage and the Drill is still good for raw damage. Not to mention that, with Sliding and Metsu, you have two more ways to jump up and get a wyvern ride faster.
      The only disadvantage I've seen with the Sliding Slash is that sometimes you don't want to unsheathe with it, like when you're going for the tail cut and the monster falls over a bit away from you. Most of those times, if you run to the tail and draw into a slide, the time it takes to go up and back down is enough for the following Perfect Rush not to finish before the monster gets up and moves.
      I'm trying to readjust, but when you're used to just draw into the advancing slash and then do the Rush, it's kinda hard to remember stopping for a second before drawing. I thought about disabling the auto-sheathing when you run, but then you'd just take a little bit more to get to the tail anyways.

    • @devv197
      @devv197 3 роки тому +1

      @@50Personas yeah getting tails with sliding slash can be a lil annoying with how long the animation takes.

    SnS is at its peak right now. The combos and new switch skills are so good. I’ve been using it primarily. Another thing about the guard slash, I couldn’t find if you had mentioned it in your section on it, but it regardless of if you land it or not, it can be used mid combo. Guarding on SnS has a slower animation coming out of a combo so it’s something you need to pull up with some warning. With guard slash, don’t know if it’s always done this before in old games, but it instantly puts you in block, much faster than a normal block. It also can be used mid combo(except perfect rush, since it’s animation locked except for dodges), for instance if you have over commited on a combo and the monster is about to retaliate. You can pull up that guard so fast and it works well with Offensive guard. But what really makes that guard slash guard/parry so good is that it’s easy to learn coming off other weapons. Right Trigger and A shares a similar role in two other weapons, lance with its counter thrust is the exact same use, Longsword has its foresight on that key bind, 3 if you include guard reload on Gunlance. Love this weapon now, if it’s like in all future titles, I may take it as my new main, even though in Tri I said I’d never main this weapon. In Rise it also is particularly strong because of all the pouch items/endemic life you can use mid combat.

  • @LetOutTheRush
    @LetOutTheRush 3 роки тому +1

    One thing to note about Perfect Rush, if you happen to be caught off guard whilst in animation and cancelling into a roll is too risky you can cancel into any of the silkbinds skills. e.g. you can power your way through an attack with Windmill or counter the monsters move with Metsu. If you really wanted to you could just yeet yourself out of there (or close distance) with Falling Shadow.

    Nice video! Something else i feel important was left out, on SnS ANY shield attack does not consume sharpness, which makes a big difference on the overall sharpness maintenance on the course of a hunt. And with Metsu Shoryugeki, i usually use the A follow for shield cuz the X follow up EATS sharpness lol
    Also, something important about Metsu Shoryugeki, it can be used to cancel out of ANY animation commitment on SnS. Realllllly good to use to cancel out of a whiffed Sliding slash. Also, its crazy easy to use a bomb to trigger your own counter from metsu shoryugeki, especially on a downed monster.

    my first choice in this game was dual blades. then i went back to bow and found out how busted it can be with pierce element (element bow has always been my choice of how to play the weapon even though darkside slayed the final boss in sub 5 with the nargacuga bow) and then i was looking at how the insect glaive had changed and it changed GOOD with the variety of kinsects you get to choose from. and then i picked up hammer which is just a hell of a fun time with bashing monster faces in. and THEN i picked up SnS after watching you play through on a second character as well as watching this guide. let me tell you: what i like to call Basher SnS is a wild ride. you give yourself guard 5, stamina thief 3 and slugger 3 and you just go nuts. even basic hits with the shield not hitting the face exhausts monsters very effectively giving you a lot more openings and that guard slash counter and metsu shoryugeki are just beautiful to pull off. i highly recommend people pick up this weapon and learn how to master it because youll just be dancing across the battlefield and the monsters 24/7 as you lock them down
