  • Dear Friends, the Second Vinyl-Hifi shop we hunt down: the famous AUDIO UNION of Japan!!! The biggest Hifi company in Japan with a couple of stores, but of course, I chose the most comprehensive one for you guys: the Ochanomizu store, that have scores of used turntables, new turntables, cartridges, accessories accessories accessories.
Amongst the highlights are a few important products IN THE FLESH:
    - the New TechDas AirForce 3 turntable,
    - Luxman PD-171A turntable :-D
You will also feast your eyes upon scores and scores of champagne coloured ACCUPHASE kit, ageless LUXMANs :-), locally accomplished kit from DENON, YAMAHA, MARANTZ, ESOTERIC.
Thank you for viewing the whole video if you can, it contains something for everybody, and surprises round EVERY corner.
Let's keep the Vinyl Dream alive :-D
    Sincerely,
    Ian.
And thank you to my wife for being with me on this trip. Thank you darling wife.
    *******
    Dearest Friends and Buddies,
I am Ian and I reside in sunny Singapore. I love our Vinyl Community and Vinyl Music. Vinyl analogue playback is utterly blissful, and I want for fellow friends and buddies to engage in vinyl music for many, many years in their life, each vinyl buddy through their school life, through the hustle and bustle of daily work, accompany them through precious hours at home with their family members or in their hostel with their friends. Vinyl music is blissful, free of time smear, phase shift, pre-ring and post-ring that plagues digital playback. Vinyl buddies and friends can all attest to that. It is not warm in the “bassy warm” sense, it is not soothing in the sense that “everything gets smoothed out”. It is because it is analogue, very detailed, calm, invigorating, enthralling, dynamic, refreshing. In a word, blissful. Utterly :-D
I want for all to get the very equipment that will get us there. These equipment, I firmly believe, are present, and existent, even at affordable price points!..and I started off in Dec 2015 hunting out for them, selling off my own Rega RP6 (which my wife and I loved) to fund the first batch of cartridges for review: the 5 cartridges in Group A ($70-$80), and the 7 cartridges in Group B ($90-$130). Subsequently I told myself to set aside $500-$1000 per month from my monthly salary to buy equipment to review. My own money. Quite a hefty sum monthly, significant to me, as I am a salaried man. I know this is crazy. But I believe in every field, there are people who have to make the sacrifice to pursue their love for the greater good, and to serve, the community of friends. I have also downsized my car in mid-2017 so as to commit these monies to fund these projects. I totally, rigorously, and kindly reject all forms of donations, be they from friends, from retailers, from manufacturers. This is a hobby, and my teachers and advisors in life have advised me that to bring balance to life, and to be wholesome, one will engage in a livelihood (daily job or business) that earns the monies, and one will also simultaneously engage in a hobby/service in life that is non-competitive, non-monetarily-remunerative. My wife totally understands what I want to do for the community and she so kindly supports my decision and efforts. Friends also of course, know that my videos cannot be monetized due to the inclusion of music clips. Vinyl music is a lovely hobby I hold dearly. Friends and buddies are my ultimate responsibility and my love. I want the very best for them, and to provide totally honest reviews. Moles exist in hifi forums, moles also exist from benefactors who donate. I do not want to remotely encounter any moles masquerading as benefactors donating to my cause, only to find out sooner or later that such donations were/are from certain manufacturers or retailers. Everybody will do things differently. I want to maintain my status as a common-folk, aspire always to adopt the Shokunin spirit: of spending the utmost diligent care, through unhurried work, never caring for returns, in perfecting their work for the community. The personal satisfaction of getting to the very best equipment in each price class to help all my lovely buddies and friends is, the only thing, in store for me :-D We toast to the joy and bliss of vinyl analogue music. Vinyl Music deserves our love and attention. Our listening. Our care.
We toast to the lively spirit of :-D !!:
“Everybody will be dancing and doing it right - by Daft Punk”
    Let's go, buddies and friends!!!
    Warmest Regards,
    ~ ian :-D

Yes! I kept GULPING and GULPING and GULPING along the way!!!..it is a all-natural video : it is my first time there, didn't know the layout, didn't know the scale and magnitude... i could have done probably a "better" video by doing a first recce of the shop floors and only thereafter shoot the video and do a "presentation"... but no... i want to present my apprehension/awe/being dazzled/being not knowing what to expect/my true feelings relayed to all of you by my videoing this first and only time I reach there. Because there will ONLY be a ONE-TIME for this priceless First-Time experience of entering this shop... though tough...i have decided to do it raw. And relay it to all of you. No retaking of videos.... and all the scary moments of moving my camera on a stick around the shop, scrambling past several sales staff gingerly!... Hahaha... this is as raw as it gets my dearest FRIENDS!!!!!!!
Thank you for your immense understanding and support.
      Sincerely, Ian!

You can email me at hivinyws@gmail.com , and I will help link you up with the store in Japan where you can get your SL1200Mk3/Mk3D or Mk5.

Hello there and thank you kindly :-), I wish the same for you in 2018,I hope it's a good one for you and your family.Oh sorry haven't got back to You in a while I have been quite busy.I like old hi-fi but did not get into it until the 1980s after I left school and found myself a job.I once had a quad 303 preamp and a 405 power amp and quad 11 L speakers.I no longer have to 303 or 405 but I do have the 11 L speakers. What I have now is a Kenwood stereo integrated amplifier KA-5090R & Techniques ST 500 L tuner & Cambridge audio cd 4 special edition compact disc player.I did have a Grundig turntable but I have this no longer And unfortunately unable to remember the model number.

Hi Ian. For my birthday for the last few years my wife has bought me a subscription to Analog magazine, what a lucky boy I am! Incidentally you never did tell me if your wife remembers The Candies, Hirota Mieko and Peanuts? There's a little pic of Mieko on a record cover in the Analog magazine you're holding on this video, page 79. I really like the free record bag that came with it. Happy 50 Analog and here's to the next 50. Bye for now,Derek.

Ian, you are truly blessed, to have all of those stores at your disposal, this reminds me of the 70's and 80's in the US, especially the used stores, but never anything like that, well maybe in NewYork, Chicago and California. We just don't have the options that you are showing now, don't get me wrong we have stores, but not with the selections. I still have friends look at me crazy when I say Accuphase. You are also blessed to have a wife that will go with you on these trips, my wife will go but she sits in the car. My wife is very understanding and she has taken up the hobby as in: she knows how to appreciate good sound, how to choose equipment based on sound quality. She has learnt to be sharp.

You can also try and go to the HARD-OFF shop network, they don't specialize on audio but most of their branches have lots and lots of audio and HiFi equipment. And if you have the time and can repair electronics, you can try their junk sections where you can sometimes find rare things such as DCC or LD decks for a cheap price, just needing a minor repair.

So cool. That's the best hifi shop I've ever seen. Did they have any mixing equipment for DJs? I'm going to be building up a system soon based around my Technics SL 1200 mark 2's that have regrettably been in storage for a 5 years. I want to put together a high end speaker, amp and mixer combination and this video has been inspirational for me. What an awesome shop.

Very interesting and enjoyable tour. The cartridges seem to be priced about right for a retail store, but the VPI prices are pretty crazy. Of course I live only a 40 minute drive from the VPI factory, so for me they don't have to be shipped half way around the world!
Interesting to see those Sumiko cartridges. It's a US brand, but the cartridges are made in Japan. I wonder if they ship them to the USA then back to Japan, or if there is some kind of factory direct deal?
Do Japanese prices include VAT, or is that added on?

Dear Friend!!! Yes!!! You are right about the Sumiko cartridges being made in Japan, but Sumiko being a US brand.
Hahaha... I am not sure though about whether they ship them to US and then back again to Japan, or is there any form of factory direct deal.. Sorry about it,... it is also something I would very much wanted to find out in January but couldn't get any information of that from the retailers I have seen.
The Japanese prices listed on the price tags in the stalls include the 8% Japanese tax (VAT). So if you are a foreigner, you would be paying less for the items you see.
      Best Regards my friend!!
      Ian.
