Had a friend that worked at Highland Appliance back in the day. He told me that if you think you only need maybe 15 watts per channel, buy a receiver that has around 50 watts per channel. His reason was that they sounded better at lower volume then the lower powered units.

    “Do Not Touch”
    Touches everything. 😆
I loved this episode. Like a kid in a candy store. I miss walking into an appliance store in the ‘80s and ogling over all the hi-FI equipment. Bought my first component stereo in 1983 right before my freshman year in college after saving up for one week of my factory job (I was making $10.15 an hour)…because I was determined to compete in the dorm stereo wars. Bought a Pioneer integrated amp, a cassette deck and speakers. My first album on it? The Police/Zenyatta Mondatta. Sounded like I heard it for the first time.

Awesome episode! Remember when there was a store like this in every city?? What a time to be alive... Fond memories, indeed! That's why my system is all vintage. You can argue until you are blue in the face, but the gear from the 70-80s had a sound that can't be replicated today...

    • @NosEL34
      @NosEL34 Рік тому +5

I personally wouldn't say it can't or isn't replicated today, it's just extremely expensive to match that quality or type of sound. It just seems systems of old had a very full sound, similar to some tube amps of today. 15inch paper woofers and big speaker enclosure's were the norm in my house back then. Today for me it's bookshelves with a subwoofer, lots of detail but that full rounded sound with the right amount and type of distortion is hard to find with a modest budget in today's solid state gear. I have some gear as early as the 90's that just has a meatier, weightier sound to it compared to the mass market receivers of today.

I live in Alabama and it was rather easy to find vintage audio at a reasonable price. Of course, this was before 2017 - when the price of a lot of vintage audio went up. This was largely due to certain people bragging loudly about selling it for a fortune on auction sites. The sellers of the pieces took notice and the end result is astronomical prices for everything - regardless of what shape it was in.

I'm so psyched out by the Tube Tester. I work in a printing shop that patented those aluminum control panels. I just printed a brushed .063" aluminum panel with that 204 Tube Tester design on it, a couple weeks ago. Sometimes we reprint/remake a control panel for someone, for something made a long time ago.

You have a nose for vintage audio dude. You smell it in the air. I like how excited you get. I'm get excited. You let it show. I was so totally loving that Pioneer SX-1250. Do they offer quality vintage audio repairs like Just Audio. You didn't say. Yes thos placeputs me in mind of Harford Road. I was surprised they did not have a Pioneer RT 701 or 707 among the reel to reels. Those Dolly Parton Speakers weren't speakers they were furniture. I remember back when all the vintage gear was new it would be sold in stores like this. The store manager knew my name and would ask, what do you want. Don't look at the price, talk to me. I got BIG Discounts! Those were the days!

Gosh! Why do I love vintage equipment so much??? At 65 my first set was a 15w Akai receiver, a Sankyo cassette deck and a pair of EPI speakers. It cost me a fortune! No turntable then because I couldn't afford it. I read stereo review making sure I chose the right turntable, I scraped and saved and so on and I bought the Marantz 6100.I later added an Akai reel to reel. Wish I wouldn't have sold a lot of those pieces, however my Pioneer amp and tuner, my 40 year old Klipsch speakers, and JVC cassette deck are still kicking and I added a Fluance turntable. Love your videos!

I do remember going to Walgreens with my dad back in the day using the tube tester and then later myself, memories. Speakers and stereos were really nice attractive pieces of furniture back then. Some how changed to ugly black box stereos and speakers, major degrade in taste. I think the main thing that hurt the old receiver/amps/preamps was the lack of a "remote" for some of us lazy people. Add today the lack of need for a tuner to listen to endless radio station commercials when you have better choices today.

Thanks for the great memories. I remember going with my dad to the supermarket in the early 60s, and he would use the tube tester to fix our black and white TV. We only received one TV channel back then, but we were OK. When my ship was in Japan in 1978 I bought a Kenwood KA-7100 amp and KT5300 tuner and it looked like that Kenwood stack in that store. I wish I still owned them. Great video!

I was there also back in 1974-76 at Yokota Air Base, like 45 miles from Yokosuka Naval Base. I did go to Yokosuka Exchange building since Yokota BX did not have much, just few. I think it was either A30 or A33 and they had tons of stuffs and cheap. That time I was able to special order at customer service on BX to get rare equipments, so I ordered Sony TAN-8650, VFET integrated amplifier for around $600 dollars, retailed for about $1300. I don't have it anymore but even to this date, that amplifier is quite rare. Top of the line was TAN-8550. More rare amp from that era was tan-8250. I also used to go Akihabara, many of small stores are under the green JR railway.
Yamagiwa at Akihabara used to sell Mcintosh, really expensive that time as Japan charges hefty import tax on U.S. made stuffs. I hope someday everyone should visit Japan and head to Akihabra and witness tons of rare hi-fi stuffs in which never exported to U.S.

I bring you bad news, for this glorious brand, which made hifi history, these days, Sharp, who recently acquired the brand, announced that the debt is incurable. The electronic audio equipment company Onkyo has filed for bankruptcy, after accumulating debts of US$24 million. Onkyo, founded in Osaka in 1946 under the name "Osaka Denky Onkyo K.K", has failed to position its mainly analog equipment in the streaming era, consequently Onkyo has been declared bankrupt by the Onkyo company. One bad thing about those "drugstore" tube testers is that they rarely, if ever, test each section of multiunit tubes separately.
For example, a 12AT7, 12AU7, or 12AX7 is checked as one circuit instead of two.
Since each section can become weak at a different rate, more sophisticated testers should be used for such tubes.
I have a Hickok 752A (a classic that gives direct Gm readings) and an EMC 213 (emission only), both of which do it right.

They're also just simple emission testers. They don't give a very accurate reading of the tube's condition. A repair tech would use a proper mututal conductance tester, made by a company like Hickock. Those drugstore testers were designed mostly for the purpose of selling new tubes.

I would lose my mind in that place. I love those Pioneers ing amps with flouroscans and that Otari mx5050. I’ve used a lot of those tanks. Stereophile reviewed the 4 channel version and gave it a favorable review.

I was a fan of the channel until lately. It seems you have a new goal to go out and scoop everything up you can then charge 3 times more for it at your place. This is why we have to pay $15,000 for a Pioneer SX-1980 you found somewhere.

Just give me a set of Altec model 19's driven by a pair of Brook tube amps. Fed from an Ampex 350 playing original classical recordings done at 15ips.
