    I get asked a lot about this, which is better, long or short rides and I've been keeping track. I can go give the standard "long ride" in my area, it's from a certain town to the airport and I get one every day about. That gives me about $0.90 a minute for 35 minutes. Or I can go downtown and give minimum rides back to back and get about $0.85 a minute. It's close enough in my opinion to say that neither is better. I enjoy both. It's nice to relax and just drive and it's nice to see a lot of people and feel the downtown buzz and they pay about the same.

    I like the long trips but when I was called to a bus station for a couple that wanted to go 5 hrs away 2 a different state, I had 2 say no. 5hrs. why didn't they just stay on the bus? I wasn't gonna get home till the next day. now that's a trip they should definitely schedule.

    I have accepted alot of long rides. However the destination is always NYC and NYC Queens. In NYC I can only drop off in these areas because only those with a TLC can pick up in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. Dependent upon traffic these ride requests have taken me an hour and 30 minutes before reaching my drop off point not to mention return trip home. I do receive ride requests once I hit Nassau County and I generally stay in that area. What I want to know is where are the ride requests that go to New Jersey or Pennsylvania in my area. I can at least pick up in those states.

    i have been doing uber for 3 yrs now. i live in Wilmington we get paid $0.60 a mile about and it is almost never worth taking a ride out side your traffic area. that means if you are not likely to get a ride around your destination and at some point soon back, its a bad ride. if its going to take more than 15 mins to get to a ride friendly location cancel the ride. how do you do this? first call the rider and ask if their leaving town, if you get resistance from the rider devolving their destination then start the ride just before you arrive. if you complete the ride with in about a quarter mile and/or 3 min it will cancel the ride instead. by doing that you will know their destination before you pick them up. and still be able to cancel.

    I took a ride from northern NJ to Laguardia airport in Queens NY. Although the distance and time with no traffic is short, NYC and it's boroughs have unpredictable traffic patterns and you can get stuck in gridlock traffic for long periods of time. Do you agree that I should cancel trips into NYC and it's boroughs? I only made $50.00 ($28.00 total tolls) included in this. A tip would've been nice too, but all I got was thanks. PS-I also had stop for him to use a rest room. Not getting the warm and fuzzies from this ride!

      Right. This is the exactly the point that I was going to make. How can you question whether to take a long trip when you don't even know the destination until the customer is in your car and you hit "begin trip" on the app? If you do that and see that the trip is farther than you want to drive, then you'll have to cancel the trip AFTER the customer has already gotten into your car, and have a pretty pissed off customer who may not want to use the service in the future.

      Alternatively, you can always drive a little ways outside the airport, near any hotels, etc. and set the destination filter to your house to find a rider who's going that way.

    How do you know if it's a long trip before you accept it? I've just done six Uber drives in my life and I accepted a trip request but wasn't looking too close at the screen. When I got to the rider and slid the 'begin trip' bar, I saw that she wanted to go to a town that was 90 miles away. I took her and the trip went smooth, but it would be nice to know, before I accept, if it is a long trip. Do you have a screen-picture of what the 'long trip warning' looks like, the one that supposedly pops up to tell you if it's a long trip, so I know what to look for next time I accept trips?

      Both Uber and Lyft now display the approximate length of the trip in minutes when the request comes in so drivers have an idea. Lyft also gives a general direction, i.e. south east, north west, etc.

  • @josephr.7879

    To all Rideshare drivers, I do drive for Rideshare occasionally. This weekend I had real life lesson with Uber. I did not do my homework and study Uber and Lyft on youtube "The Do's and Don'ts". I was driving south on 75 near Port Charlotte in Florida at about 4 am and I received a Scheduled premium pickup request that was 18 minutes away, (to my thought perhaps an airport destination) and I accepted it. I screenshot the moment I accepted the request to keep tangible information of the initial start of pickup. Once I was approaching the designated exit according to the GPS I have driven 12 minutes and I was 6 minutes to my destination, just before getting on the ramp the driver Updated the pickup destination and immediately the GPS rerouted me to continue south one more exit and at this point I screenshot again. Now pickup destination inflated from 6 minutes to 12 minutes, therefore the total minutes of would've been initially have been 24 minuets for the pickup destination. I thought two things ( the pickup is just another exit and the rider is watching me and being crafty with the Uber App). Once I arrived it was just one person and he seemed anxious to get in the in. Now at this moment I did 2 screenshots (arrival & destination). Once I arrived and picked him up, his final destination was only 7 minutes away, he lived in remote gated community that was far and deeply away from any close enough Rideshares or taxis. Half through the trip the rider said to me >>> " I'm sorry for the long distance pickup, but I've been taught by other riders who live far and tucked away the best way to get an Uber or lyft is to make SCHEDULED and shorten the 1st pickup distance and time, and if the driver gets closer to the ramp/exit then I update the pickup destination to prevent the drivers to cancel and this way it's broken up in two pickup kinda short distances and I'm not charged the "long-distance fee". your better chances is to Cancel because you will be obligated of going further distance and time " It's a well Thought -Out for the Rip-Off Riders" and No Uber or Lyft will Pay You!

    i picked up a couple of gentlemen from Napa, of coarse i don't know where they are going, until i saw the app that said the trip was 1 hr 11 min long. and i always ask, "where are we headed?" they said, "San Rafael." before we got there, the other guy asked if i could drop him off to Danville, which was another 1hr 5min. i said sure. before we got to San Rafael, i got PING 6 times and i ignored all of them. when we arrived at the first destination, he entered the second destination, and i took him there. i'm a new driver by the way. how was i suppose to handle those situations? my acceptance rate went from 95% to 65%. thanks and thanks for your videos.

    • @Therideshareguy
      @Therideshareguy  6 років тому

      You handled it correctly - Uber saw you were on a long ride and shouldn't have sent you those additional pings unless, for some reason, it was an UberPOOL ride. If it was an UberPOOL ride, you would have had to pick them up. But since you're new I wouldn't worry about it too much, Uber doesn't deactivate for low acceptance anymore.

    Yesterday, on my third day driving for Uber, I had a 135 mile fare. I live in Lake Placid, NY which is way away from anything. I did not want to take this but the rider was in a bad situation because they had a flight to make. I took it and it went smooth but there was no way anyone would be going back 135 miles north of Albany so I spent 5 1/2hours for $113. That in my opinion is really bad. I really wish there was a return fare I could get? Otherwise I feel like I have to reject any long fares?

    • @Therideshareguy
      @Therideshareguy  6 років тому

      Were you able to turn on your destination filter? That's usually the best case scenario.

    • @splitrock
      @splitrock 6 років тому

      Yes, I did actually turn it on but Lake Placid was too far away and the app told me I couldn't add that location. I probably could have destination filtered towns on the way home but I don't know those towns and decided not to Uber there. Plus there are only a few town off of the major highway I have to use to go home and they are quite rural. Thank you for your suggestion.

    • @ianchaille997
      @ianchaille997 5 років тому +1

      The way I look at it is on the one hand, if you drove 5.5 hours and made $113, that's like making a little over $20 an hour, which to me, is awesome. On the other hand, wherever I end up, if I have time, I would stay in the other city and do some trips there for a few hours before going home. I live in Jacksonville and I've gotten trips taking people to Orlando Airport. So I get there, and I'll stay in Orlando for a few hours doing trips. Hell, I'll utilize my SeaWorld pass and ride some rides while I'm there. So for me, long rides are a win-win.

    Rideshare rides are offered with an Illegal contract in several areas, The most important area is every ride a driver takes is a breach of the contract in itself, as the offeror alerts the driver without telling him where he's going and thus the offer to the driver disallows him or her from consideration, which makes this an invalid and illegal contract from the start. As well this type of ongoing contract is against contract law in several areas, such as business professions in most states if not all of them.
    The driver when alerted of a ride he must tap the app on his dashboard with I accept, then proceed to ???? wherever the app sends him and the driver still not knowing where he is going to drop off this rider, say New York or Main from Ca. or let's just say it's 100 miles and he has to be in court where these companies that he subcontracts with end up constantly and will finally end there.

    • @torrynerheim2887
      @torrynerheim2887 6 років тому

      I might add this one other Idem and that is that these companies are in bed with the TA without a dought. It is their job to stop these types of abuse which there are many, such as how much it cost to operate a vehicle. Just for shits and giggles CA. 54 cents mile.
      In Federal the cost of operation is 58 cents a mile, now let's say you drive 5 miles without pay to pick up a driver, that is 2.90 without pay. Now just for shits giggles, say the driver takes the rider 100 miles, that is according to the law is .58 cents.
      Now let's just add what the company pays during most rides at 85 cents a ride or less for those 100 miles $85, now subtract $58 from $85 and wallah, U receive a walloping $28 dollars for your service. The companies are robbing the driver of a reasonable wage unless U think U can run a business for less than the minimum $1.30 per ride per mile and that my friend is robbery.
      There are numerous cases in the US courts that have determined that $ 1.30 per mile is the minimum for drivers to be fair and equitable.
      I have talked to many drivers that will have to buy a new car as result of ridesharing with Uber or lyft or maybe other? They wore out their cars before their financing was finished by two or three years and now have to buy a new or used car while still owing on the first one that's now worn out.
      Next is fair wage in the state of say CA. Which if U take into consideration the free ride to pick up and low pay for destination is close to five dollars an hour.

    I had a guy that requested a ride from our airport in Central IL to Indy. That's about 180 miles away. The request came in at about 9:30 at night. I refused primarily because I was on-call for my main job. I can get away with doing Uber in those cases because the riders usually only go 10-15 miles at the most! But, there's no way I could do it that late at night because I'm not a late-niter. Even if I could last the trip of 3 hours that late, I would have to pay for a hotel, because there's no way I could make the trip back that late! That was the most outrageous request I've ever received! I've heard of some drivers who've taken requests to go to Chicago, which is about 170 miles away!

    No tip = no five stars! It's not fair to the people who tip. The tippers are the only five star customers.

    • @owenbrau63
      @owenbrau63 7 років тому +6

      Nope. I give them 5 stars because they see the rating before rating me. I used to think like you, but decided that it should be like rating us; 4 is a fail. They have to do something bad for me to drop the rating, and not tipping isn't it.

    • @troyonline688
      @troyonline688 5 років тому

      I show them my phone and give 5 no matter what...I haven't received anything lower then a five because they see fo themselves that I am giving them 5 even if they were not a five.it has worked for one year...I tell them they were a five star ride and I show that I gave it to them... giving anyone a low rating won't help your rating at all. People have made a mess and I tell them that I got it and I vacuum it up and continue..this gets me more tips and they are relieved that I won't drop there rating...one lady gave me five stars because I didn't play rap music..people can be unreasonable about their rating.

    Could a long ride be given to the uber customer, off the uber clock, say for cash? Would that upset uber? I would do longer rides in a second if if were not for the dead head, and ubers low rates.

    • @Therideshareguy
      @Therideshareguy  8 років тому

      Uber can deactivate you for this but yes lots of drivers do this. Some get away with it by calling it a tip :) Just note if you do a ride off the app you don't have commercial insurance/licensing/etc..

    • @242HP
      @242HP 7 років тому

      Doing a trip off the app just isn't worth the risk, IMO, because your own insurance policy isn't going to provide you with the same amount of coverage that you'll get from Uber while you have a customer in your car. Unless you're running your own driving business and have a commercial grade insurance policy with high liability coverage ($1M +), you're taking a big risk driving people on your own.

    You have to dead head miles drive no matter when you do it. The Start, Middle or end of your day. Short of being psychic you will never now which direction the next rider will direct you to go.

    • @Therideshareguy
      @Therideshareguy  8 років тому

      +JustDanO Good point but if it happens early on in the day at least you can drive around all day and maybe get back to your area. But if it happens later, that is when you may want to politely decline the trip..

      exactly! how do you know where they aee going before you start the trip, call them? i love long trips, stop at a drive thru, put on a movie, and hopefully you dont have to stop for gas! 😉

    • @Therideshareguy
      @Therideshareguy  8 років тому

      +Apraham Gogus That's the problem. You don't know where they're going until you start the ride. So at that point, you have to decide if it's worth it or not. If you take the ride, you will probably have to come back deadhead. If not, end the ride and/or ask the pax to cancel and take the hit..

      first off, thank you for the time and effort you give here.
      I'm pretty sure uber would not want to make this mandatory for the rider, but isn't there an option for the rider to input their destination BEFORE a driver accepts the pickup?
      I think it's the bill/laiden option.
      I did notice you brought up the possibility of them making this an option with compensatory "fairness"?

    Is this correct?
    UBER | PASSENGER | ADDITIONAL CHARGES
    Additional charges may be added to your trip fare if your driver has to wait for you for more than two minutes or your route includes tolls, airport surcharges, or other fees. Depending on the charge and location, these additional charges may be retained by your driver, paid by your driver to Uber, or passed through to the airport or other third parties.
    You may be charged a surcharge for airport pickups and dropoffs. Other fees may be charged by partner-drivers for certain services. For example, venue parking fees and long return trips from a destination may both be charged to the rider.

      I think it depends on the circumstance. In NYC for ex, drivers get a $20 fee for dropping off in NJ since they can't get a fare there and have to drive back empty.

    • @melvincabrera1675
      @melvincabrera1675 7 років тому +1

      NYC drivers can pick up in NJ. NJ drivers can not pick up in NYC. the 20 usd you said is for the toll to go back to NYC, as going to jersey you don't pay toll

      You know what's weird, Harry? I find that on so many of the very long trips I have done that I have always gotten a low rating from the passenger, anyway.... You go to a place you are not familiar with, maybe you miss the right exit by mistake, maybe you had to stop for gas, or to go to the bathroom.... whatever.... I don't do them anymore.

    • @TheBhumiChannel
      @TheBhumiChannel 7 років тому

      And other times they think the fare should be lower. For instance, one person I drove from Monterey to San Jose, told me he had driven down earlier in the day for $60. I KNEW the fare was going to be twice that and told him so. In the end, his fee was $117 and he thought I had cheated him.

    • @242HP
      @242HP 7 років тому

      If you cancel a trip before you've driven anywhere, can the customer still rate you? I wouldn't think so, especially if you touch the "Do not charge customer" option when you cancel the trip.
