Everything this man has said is spot on. Been growing hydro and (R)DWC for over 14 years and everything he has said is spot on. The biggest tip IMHO is whatever nutrient line you are using, start at half dose and work up. This was the biggest thing that pushed my growing to the next level. Great episode! 👍

The dude took a regular $5 construction bucket and just enlarged it on the side. And added another $32.95 to the price? Without a lid)) For a lid another $32.95 LOL)) Also, his bucket is too small. The more liters the better. The solution heats up less. I prefer 30-50 liters. If you're growing in DWC, just make a separate hole in your $5 bucket in the top lid to measure the PH and change the solution! No need to pay for a bucket with a lid $60+. In addition it's very small.

    • @AlexeyDnepr
      @AlexeyDnepr Рік тому +5

The advantage of RDWC is the movement of water, which prevents stagnation and root rot (but does not eliminate it if the water temperature is above 21 C degrees). RDWC is easier to use and maintain through one main tank than DWC, where each tank is separate if you have 4 or more plants. We can measure PH, TDS, temperature and many other indicators (ORP, Dissolved Oxygen) in one main tank for several plants at once, and not climb into each bucket, as with DWC. The same thing is with the change of the solution. Also, in RDWC it is easier to maintain a low temperature of the solution (up to 21 C degrees), which is very important (perfect when 18-19 C). You can cool the water with a сhiller or simply put ice bottles in the main external tank. DWC only makes sense if you have one plant. He promotes the DWC so much because he just sells these buckets at crazy prices.

im struggling to get my head around rdwc - currently growing in coco - cant understand lets say ive got 8 x 50L buckets, plus 50L res, thats say around 300L water as not everything filled up to the brim, so @ 4ml/L nutrients have I got to add 1.2L of nutrients at grow and 1.2L nutrients at bloom, plus the top-ups, that seems like ill be getting through a lot more nutrients? and the water, if im using r/o water 300L of r/o water is a fair amount. its just the amount of nutrients that im struggling to understand or do I have it mixed up?

That’s why I have a AutoFlower Breeding Hobby on the side , cause I grow Photoperiod genetics and one day got a hold of autos inside DwC and had a blast and truly made stock to do it again , but little did I know the variety that came from the breed and working them to F4 would ultimately change the entire AutoFlower World 🌍 the way it did. Autos in DWC are the best best way to grow Autos hands down but living soil auto are right up there for the best with DwC so …anyways great 👍 comment

I’ve been growing recirculating DWC for years and it’s great. I’ve recently been using an oxygen tank to pump pure oxygen through my air pump directly into each bucket. Oxygen regulator is on a timer to run 15 minutes per hour only when lights are on. Trust me this puts the plants in overdrive and improves yields greatly. It’s a very noticeable difference!

Thanks for the pod cast. I started with kratky and switched to DWC and was very impressed by the results. For kratky I start with grow nutes and top it with additional bloom nutes when the flowering starts maintaining the PH and PPM. For DWC I use a small siphon(goes all the way to the bottom of the bucket) which is outlets into tin can reservoir, the water level in the can and the bucket will always stay the same.I can check the water level, Ph and refill from the cup. To empty the bucket I just need to lower the tin can till all water flows out. I find this easier and effective than soil grow.

Mr. Grow It, thanks for asking my most pressing questions about avoiding harmful bacteria and root rot. It seems your guest is more concerned with talking about the Hydrobucket than addressing these questions however. Perhaps he doesn't even realize it's a concern among DWC growers considering his local environment in Canada. At 50:28 Mitchel our Hydroponic Visionary explains to us that in "four days" our DWC water has "drifted" from optimum 68 degrees but can now be replenished with cold water. Wait, what?
I live in Texas. My "cold" tap water is 92 degrees coming out of the city main! I don't have a basement mancave in Canada that stays 50 degrees year round. It's 105 outside and my AC is struggling to stay at 82 in my living space. No, I can't move to Canada or buy a Hydrobucket to magically make excess heat go away. Still an interesting episode and informative guest.

Great episode. Been diy dwc since 2013. The hydrobucket is a great idea.that being said if you do a scrog and there is a problem with the such as root rot your still going to have to pull the plant out of the bucket to address the issue. Cleaning the bucket thoughrouly is a must. Hydrogaurd or h202 will help but not completely fix the problem without Cleaning the bucket. Temperature of water has to be ideally 65°-68°f yet room temp @72-78° f. This can be a challenge without a chiller or at the least a very reliable sized appropriately a/c . I find growing primarily in the winter months is easier to keep in check. It's definitely a balancing act. RO water with low ppms is key as well. Alot of nutrient lines geared towards hydroponics are developed with that in mind. I suggest starting out with one plant for newbies for sure. I will say that lifting the plants out of the bucket gets to be a bit of a drag but I've learned the hard way that clean is your friend. I won't even go into ec values and ph 😂 with different nutrient lines and different cannabis strains.

I like the rdwc and a chiller. I think it keeps the nutrients mixed and the water fresh. Single buckets water temp gets to hot and you constantly have to add water. I can flush my entire system outside the tent and refill in 20 minutes. I think he is trying to sell his buckets. Great episode.

I live in a warm climate. DWC doesnt work in the summer months here unless you have a nute cooler. The roots go all yellow and sludgy and the plants looked stunted. I've now developed a hybrid DWc/Kratky system through trial and error with space between the basket and the nutrients and an airstone in each pot. I'm using 10 litre pots with 2 litre of solution in them. i let them run to dry, rinse them with water, drain them and put fresh nutes in. So far i've had good results in winter. In summer i go to guano rich soil with algae based organic nuites. Adapting to your conditions is key to success.

There was a time I was intimidated by DWC. The truth is, as long as you can keep your water temps between 63-_68F, it's the easiest way to get the best results! One issue with most DWC is power outages. Hempy Buckets, although primitive, still can't be beat (for me) A gift. In my profile pic is a cola from the original Skunk#1. The days well before legalization when you can buy a couple packs of seeds, and some of those seeds are still running again. I'm glad Mr Grow it looks at other methods. DWC is such a simple and grower friendly system.
If you use the right size buckets, you can have it set up so you only need to check on plants once a week as long as the roots have access to the water but some is sitting above it, the plants will be fine even if the pump dies. Also gives incredible growth, plus no tons of soil and root balls to get rid of, just some roots and stalk.
Changed from soil like 10 years ago and never went back, never had much luck with soil if im honest, but DWC seemed to be idiot proof for me tbh, great results from the get go.

DIY Water chiller for under $100 and you don't need a pump for it. Buy a used water cooler off market place ( $15- $35 ), one that you would normally put a 5 gal jug in the top. Now tear it apart so that you are left with the compressor and the cooling coil. Some of the cooling coils are coated in a protective plastic and some are not. If the one you have doesn't have a protective coating on it just wrap a plastic bag around the coil so you don't get any oxidation in your nutrients. Place the coil directly into your nutrient reservoir. Buy a device that will monitor your water temp. I use the ITC-308 ($50). Plug the compressor into the cooling plug on the device and set your water temps. I set my water temp at 67 deg and set the turn on temp at +2 deg (69).

First of all, thank you for this interview! After a 22 year break from cannabis, I decided to set up a RDWC for my "first " grow. I was super excited and put a lot of time into it, too much time. I had all of the issues that you spoke of like water temp being too high and the PH crashed from 5.8 to 4.2 within about three hours, after I flipped to flower. I also found that the nutrient solutions to be expensive, not to mention the failure of equipment that almost destroyed the grow. I had two pumps quit working at different stages of the grow as well as clip fans that died within about 30 days of running them 24/7. The bud was killer, except for the fact that it was seeded! I am certain that the heat stress as well as the PH fluctuation caused seeding. Being an old weed guy (i first smoked in the 70s), seeds didn't scare me. It was a great experience! I now grow in organic super soil and am killing it, with half of the expense and less time spent in the garden. one love~~

Come on Chris - give it a shot! If for nothing else it would make for a good seed to harvest video. If I can do it, you can for sure. I never used a chiller. if keep your buckets on the cement in your basement and that will help keep temps down or frozen bottles of tap water have worked for me and others in a pinch. Just make sure you have a good air pump and stone.... also one last tip don't use a bucket but use a tote. You can get away with not changing the reservoir as often figure you can double, or triple the amount of solution that the roots are suspended in.

With Kratky's Method, it will work. The roots drink, so you have to pay attention to the schedule. When approaching flower, you simply introduce those nutrients.
Microbes are a must with every water refill. Feeding with this will take some experience for your environment. If you want to feed every watering for consistency, use 1/4 the recommended dosage.
If you rather feed every other watering or every 4th watering, that's on you. Gaining experience through experimentation is more valuable than you'll ever know.
Pay attention to the plants. If they need less or more, apply accordingly.

I have been thinking of home making a DWC bucket and have had an idea for nutrient testing. I am going to find a bucket with a tap near the base, like a brewers bucket but hopefully a little shorter as they can be pretty tall and lose a lot on plant height at a result. The great thing then is you can run off a little solution to test whenever you like and if you discover something really amiss, dump the whole lot out without having to move the bucket

i'm not sure but @21:40 i feel like this guy just wants to make more money from everyone, 1. you can just tilt the lid enough to get a hose in there and extract the water from the bucket with a cheap ebay pump, then refill it with new water the same way you extracted the water. .2 if tilting the lid is a concern you could just drill an extra hole in the lid for a hose witch is going to do the same thing without disturbing the plant and have some reflective tape or something to cover the extra hole, i don't know i'm very new to DWC but it would make sense to do what i just said above rather then spending an extra $200 - $300 on a pointless access fetcher

Would love some more info on dry nutrients for RDWC. As someone new to hydro this is probably the most frustrating part for me because of the plethora of brands available. It would be great if you could do a thorough break down of what makes a nutrient line better or worse for RDWC specifically. With some examples would be great too.
Thanks so much for all the good info! And keep it up.

The common mistakes for hydro with no medium is feeding you get ph spikes and ec spikes as the plant takes on more water than nutrients so as the resovoir level goes down the nutrients level spikes and you have to adjust for this process

he is very correct hydro organics is ALMOST there, you can do synganic. where you use some beneficial bacteria to help. as well as kelp, The issue really for organic grows in hydroponics comes down to is it is hard to make organic dissolvable phosphorus. We can get the N and K pretty easy its the P thats hard.

When I first started growing indoor herbs and leafy greens I thought RDWC was the answer. I quickly learned that all buckets are subject to the same nutrient solution so there is added risk that a mistake can affect all of the plants in the network in addition to the fact that you cannot customize the nutrient needs of any plant over the others. I also found that pump volume combined with well developed root systems created issues with the free flow of solution in the circuit and I had an overflow in the first buckets a number of times. If you are going with RDWC my suggestion is to use the largest fittings and pipe that you can between the buckets. I love the DWC method but have all of my buckets as stand alone growing environments.

Exactly roots clog up small diameter pipes. I use 3" in my rdwc system.

    • @AlexeyDnepr
      @AlexeyDnepr Рік тому

Great info guys! I have been doing a basic dwc grow for about a year now. I use blue planet 3 part nutrients. I don't use a chiller and I haven't seen any problem's yet. The nutrient solution normally sits between 70-75 in the bucket. Also I only change resivoir every 2 weeks. I use half ro and half tap water. My last plant in the bucket was a bubba Kush and it got to be 6ft y'all before I super cropped it.

From experience dwc is the same as any other hydroponic grow as far as growing itself, you still need to do a mix and feed the plants only difference is that in dwc you have the bucket being your reservoir as well canceling out the time you’d spend doing mixes daily or every other day! As far as quality depends on how well and balanced you do your mixes and as far as yield it comes down to your skills as a grower with the plant work you do during veg/ early bloom. Just do it!

My suggestion would be to simply drill a hole through the top of your netpot. Plug the hole with a neoprene collar.
Remove the neoprene to put in hose to pump in/out nuttient solution. Ph adjust and top off using the same hole.
Thats way cheaper than buying his system.

Krakty is only limited to certain plants, like leafy greens? Hmm.. I'll be sure to let my 4th tomato, pepper, green bean, cucumber, squash, and my 2nd watermelon harvest this summer know that they aren't supposed to grow. :) Maybe I'm doing it wrong? But I have grown many different types of krakty style growing plants. Also, they stay outside in the hot idaho sun and I don't have root issues. Unfortunately the worst thing that happens is it gets too hot for the tomatoes, but that's soil or hydro. Unfortunately, I haven't grown medical plants this way, again, Idaho. Cheers

Organic or salt synthetic does not change the flavor ,it all comes down to,did you destroy the roots with extreme level of nutrients through 90 percent of the plants life cycle . It all comes down to how many percent roots do you have left at the last week . Most cases less than 30 percent of good roots is left over. If you have a 3 foot plant with a root zone of 30 percent left because of high nutrient levels .
This is why you get good smoke or harsh smoke
Technically looking at it ,a 30 percent root system isn’t gonna flush the plant
