@@marquisethomas5611 Eh, I kind of disagree. It's the nice thing to do, sure. However, he thought he was selling a broken motorcycle and priced it as such. Those things are the perfect plow vehicle. Literally endless low end torque. Also, holding the right brake, (front brake) allows you to start in gear. Also, since it’s a hydraulic transmission, you don’t have to lift throttle to shift, since all it’s doing is moving a swash plate between different presets.
Also, almost every one of those has that shifting issue. It doesn’t click into gear unless the output shaft is perfectly aligned when shifted. Just tap the gas and it’ll pop into gear. Also the reason the D1 doesn’t show in high is due to a transmission shift code. The flashes will tell you what sensor is wrong. You either get a new one or fix the sensor itself. Then you should have a perfectly running bike.

I'd definitely lube the shift linkage pivot points and try a new shift POSITION sensor. Usually, when the shift ANGLE sensor starts to go out, it will start sputtering in reverse. Also, the timing and oil pump chains are bad to stretch out too far around 6000 miles. There's no tensioner on the pump chain, so when it comes off the gear, alot of people assume the Hondamatic has gone out because it operates off the oil pressure. The timing chain will actually stretch beyond the capacity of the tensioners reach, and it starts backfiring when you let off the throttle. I'd almost guarantee the valves have never been adjusted. After i first bought mine, I cleaned all the electrical connections and added dielectric grease to them.

I was buying back yard lawn art motorcycles, and fixing them up and reselling starting at the ripe age of 12, i motocrossed as well. this was 1984 of course so my bikes were mostly 70s vintage with what i could afford as a kid, though i did have a few nuggets, ca95 (purchased for 20 dollars), and others. 1982 YZ 250 traded for fixing broken KX80, and so on. I still own my 1979 KD125 rotary valve, second owner (i have had it, what , almost 40 years now, still pristine.. that was self realization im old, hate when i do that lol), i raced with it for years. I really enjoy watching young people have a passion for fixing what others consider worthless or discarded. I had kids so had to go corporate and degrees, if it were up to me i would still be buying old bikes, fixing them and selling them. then riding the entire afternoon until the sun set. Also, that KX125 is a screamer huh, should have seen it new ;-) oh and in racing, the KX125 would kick my KD125 in the pants, however the KX power band was gone by 4th (short shifts) and the KD rotary valve kept the power band longer, smoke em in 4th and 5th LOL

I'm still riding an '01 model with 6500 miles on the odometer. New top end and a few other things, but the bottom end is still as tight as brand new. The worst habit people get into is not changing the oils on a regular basis, not adjusting the valves or, not keeping the mud cleaned out of the radiator. In my experience, they're almost bulletproof if you keep up the regular maintenance. Doesn't have a front diff lock but with a good set of knobby tires and just knowing how to ride makes up for it anywhere I ride. Don't get me wrong, a front diff lock would be nicer, but it should be in no way a deal breaker for anyone. These are excellent machines. I'm amazed you got it for $400. But, WOW, that thing is dirty.

I own the 2004 version of this. I’ve done all the maintenance and oil changes, etc. You did a really good job making sure everything was healthy. It appears to have had virtually no maintenance at 6500 miles. The Rubicon is such a great workhorse and as you know fully automatic. I did have a cut out not running issue and it turned out to simply be the spark plug. They say do a new spark plug every thousand miles and mine made it almost 2000 miles.

Rear differential..."Maybe it's been changed" Why would you even give this consideration? Air filter, lack of motor oil, the seat,... it's painfully obvious at this point, that maintenance was never a priority in the life of this vehicle. Good for you that (hopefully) you caught this terminal problem of no maintenance, before it was too late.

You're right about Honda building the best machines. I remember as a kid, my brother and I were in line to get a pair of MX bikes. We found a pair of Honda CR 125s ('86 models) at a nearby dealer, so my father took us to check them out, but when he made the dealer an offer he refused because he knew these bikes were the best on the market and that Honda didn't import enough of them to cover the demand so he stuck to the full price. My father passed, and we ended up finding what ended up being our go-to dealer who was Deerfield Suzuki, in Massachusetts. The owner was a great guy and always gave my old man a great deal on bikes/quads and anything else we needed so we ended up taking home an RM 125 ('85 leftover) and an '86 RM 250 and we couldn't have been happier.

    Found this:
    Hondamatic Transmission Code Retrieval
    1. Put the gear shift lever in neutral (be sure the neutral indicator comes on) and the ignition switch OFF (vehicle at a stop).
    2. While pushing the UP and DOWN shift switches (ESP) simultaneously, turn the ignition key to the on position.
    3. Release the UP and DOWN switches immediately, then at the same time push both the UP and DOWN shift switches again and hold form more than 2 seconds.
    4. The problem code is displayed by a certain number of blinks “ - - “ on the gear indicator, which indicates the problem code by the number of blinks. If “N” (neutral) stays ON on the position indicator, the retrieval process was not correctly performed. Repeat the procedures from step one at this time.)
    5. When the problem code(s) displays, release the shift switches.
You should see “ - - “ for approximately 3 seconds then off, then the “ - - “ should flash, once for code one, twice for code two and so on. The engine control module (ECM) can store two different codes. If your ECM has stored two different codes, the first code displayed is the most recent and the second code is the earlier code. Write them down.
    To Erase the Problem Codes
    1. Push and hold the UP and DOWN shift switches simultaneously for 3 seconds of more while the problem code is being displayed (i.e., “ - - “ blinking on the gear position indictor).
    2. When the erasure is completed, the blinking pattern changes to the erasure confirmation blink.

I have an older honda (93) 4 wheeler and the original book, and it actually says to screw the dipstick in and then back out to check the oil. Also someone on a forum I asked about it said that is in fact true. but ultimately it just meant the difference between being at the top of the dipstick and at the midpoint. Someone said that is still the way to check a honda. When I asked about the 2020.

I have the 2017 500 Rubicon with the manual shift, P/S, front 4 whl diff lock, and 2 whl or 4 whl switch and the IRS rear end diff and fuel injection, A HUGE difference from a 2015 1985 Big Red that finally dropped the bottom end when it ate the starter drive gear, when you open the fuel injection 500 up you better be hanging on when in 4whl lock, things are going to HAPPEN and FAST!!. The 2107 engine is quite different than that one with the auto in it, dont think I would like the auto stuff , something else to screw up later. I heard you say she said it would just quit , my 2017 done a weird thing like that , it threw a code for the sensor in the exhaust occasionally, then one day it would just shut off and then backfire out the exhaust going down a gravel road. Found it was the sparkplug after I watched a YT vid, the guy had the same thing happen, only he changed a BUNCH of parts from his buddies bike and didnt fix it until the plug was changed, never seen a plug do that, usually it starts missing or clowning around, not just shut totally off with less than a 1000 miles and never abused or in water. And he said his would get started up and shut off frequently and not run that much. I heard yours stumble a couple times like plug was fading out like mine did. I seen the boat trailer going for free to, I would have pulled the parts off and maybe sold, or for free, and used the trailer axle and stub axles and tires to make a trailer, that is just as wide as the rear on the Rubicon to clear trees etc on paths, and a frame out of angle, and a tongue just long enough that you can jackknife it to turn around easier in woods and NOT hit the bed, you got to put the trailer axle about 1 to 11/2 " forward from center of gravity on trailer, so some weight is on rear axle , but not a lot, and a boat trailer hitch you had on trailer. On mine I used conveyor belting for the floor and sides, that shtuff IS TOUGH and lasts forever!! I used it for deer hunting , dragging cut up wood out of the woods, about 4 wheel barrels ,out of some of the gnarleist places imageable without tearing the woods up, and getting rocks out of creeks with fossils in it for a sidewalk I made here, .

If you just start taking the time to really clean your parts and bolts perfectly you would honestly perfect your skill set and be an “absolute mechanic”

I won a brand new Honda 500 Rubicon with a $10 raffle ticket that was a fundraiser for a local police department. I think this was in 2001 or 2002. The only issue I had was it was really hard to steer because it was full time 4 wheel drive and no power steering. Later year bikes had a switch to change from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive. In one year I only put 75 miles on it so I put it up for sale for $4500 (MSRP new was $7009). The new owners son (14 years old) totally destroyed the bike in a high speed roll over in less than 8 days from purchase. Robin in Philipp, WV.

The dad was not wanting to see the fact that his little boy was at fault. This was not the first bike this boy had torn up. I'm just glad the kid didn't get hurt to bad.

If you sandblast the racks and give them a coat of black paint and restore the plastics correctly, this will clean up beautifully. The rest of the package is already clean from the engine to the chassis, and even the wheels look nice. If you take care of it properly, you'll be able to get top dollar for it, but if you cheap out, you won't get the kind of money this quad is capable of delivering. Who knows maybe after it's done it could be something you'd want to keep. This is just my two cents from years of experience flipping these same types of recreational vehicles.
