Joe, there is supposed to be a foam sock filter on the end of the rubber intake hose where you put the tape. That will create the proper air resistance for the carb. You're welcome.
Where exactly cuz I bought in that was beat up gettin it fixed up so i don’t think I have it either
Polaris got rid of that foam due to it crumbling and clogging carbs causing more harm than good.
I'm seventy five and never had a ATV or Bike but for some reason I truly enjoy watching your videos. Maybe it's your calming voice how you narrate the work you do but it's addictive. Keep up the great work
get urself a Raptor and pull some grandma fluff
Hee-hee, I've noticed the calming voice myself at various moments. I've occasionally viewed these videos totally alert and sat back on a sofa, and then found myself hearing but not seeing anything. Then I open my eyes. 😊
Yesterday I fixed an 03 Honda rincon for a buddy of mine. 5 of 6 bolts came loose inside the motor and ate the stator for breakfast. That was a fun one 🤣 my back is killing me today, I’d WAY rather just watch Joe wrench today! 👍
I love your little interactions with vinnie, he's a real character.
Joe, I really admire your dedication and determination in getting these machines, bikes etc. running again and really everything you set out to do, accomplished! You're showing that hard work yields satisfying results! Thanks for sharing & God bless! ~ Scott 💙🙏🏻👊🏼
Logical sequence, spark, compression, fuel, timing and patience. Good job!
Your calm ,civil ,git it done additive, good editing and camera work make your channel a real pleasure to watch.
2V, you landed a winner! When looking at that complex air box you can see some real tuning prowess went into the design. Live and learn! Great rescue! Congrats!
Nice you found an honest seller after some of the less scrupulous guys you've dealt with. The package of the KTM and this one was a winner. You had a couple of relatively easy and cheap fixes and can make some money on them. I don't ride ATVs or motorcycles but really enjoy your patient and thoughtful approach to fixing these machines. I've learned a ton! Great content as always!
I just finished rebuilding a 1996 425. Cam ended up being wiped out on the exhaust lobe. You got lucky with this unit in very good condition. Thanks for the content
A lot of ppl don't run right 0w40 is only thing good for these
I remember back in the day when I bought a new one from the dealer back in 99 they told me the cams would go bad if you didn't use the special polaris 0w30 oil in them. I listened to their advice and used 0w30 Polaris oil since new and my dad has it now and it still runs like new. It has 28,000 miles on it. It is a sportsman 500 but basically the same engine.
manufacturers oils (BMW SEAT VW etc)
are often good invoices, manufacturing,
Avoid returns to after -sales service of their vehicles.
Another great video as always sir. Since you made out so well on this one, I think it deserves a new seat cover too. Keep up with the great work.
My cousin had one identical to this back in the day when they were new. He was a hardcore Polaris fanboy in those days, but all I remember of it was him CONSTANTLY fixing on it because it wouldn’t run or the 4 wheel drive had quit again or something. He doesn’t run Polarasses anymore! 😂
In the the mid 90s we had to pull Polaris' after they got wet because the belts would slip they was definitely junk in those days . There actually good fourwheelers now
@@michaelmays9292 Still junk
Nobody "could" fix this 😂😂😂😂 nobody wanted to take the time to fix this pile of crap
@@NightTakesFlightyeah I’m still not a fan of Polaris. I like my Japanese stuff, it just runs forever. My 87 moto 4 still runs like a dream.
@minnesotatomcat same, I like my YFZ450R and my TRX250X, my brother picked up a 04 Predator 500 and it's just been a chore, still gotta fix the leak to the carb
Morning coffee and Joe’s fix. Becoming my morning routine!! Keep the videos coming Joe!!👍🏻
Someday, you will meet a girl.
@@billhenry7833someday you will also
The boots and shorts combo, that is quite the fashion statement
I could watch your videos every day.
There are only a couple of channels I could say that about here on UA-cam.
Great job Mister Joe.
My dad currently has the same quad from 1995. It is bone stock and has over 4k hours on it, and has never needed anything but gas and oil changes. Most reliable quad I’ve ever seen
Doubt it but nice try brother!🤔😬👁👁👎👎🤝
@craigmorgan4676 nope 100% true best quad I’ve ever owned. Finally after 30 years of hard work the transmission is finally going. It has been worked it’s whole life and never gave us any fits
Great fix😊
Mine is a 91 and been great
@@craigmorgan4676 they will if people would perform normal maintenance on them. I work on everything from motorcycles, snowmobiles, atvs, outboards, chainsaws, lawnmowers, etc and without question the worst are atv and chainsaw owners. They do nothing in regard to maintenance.
Didn’t see anything in the comments about this but if the tractor muffler has more air flow than stock, the carb will need a bigger main. When you restrict the air box, you are essentially running it at half choke making up for the lack of fuel. that being said I love watching your videos. I’ve learned a thing or two from you.
Polaris tech tip. When diagnosing the fan simply unplugs under the passenger side fender well. Unplug it because it sucks enough juice to drain the battery in 5 minutes by its self. It will save on your cranking juice. Also the fuel “pump” is merely a device that only allows fuel to flow if the engine is running activated by air pulse. The fuel is gravity fed otherwise. The cams do get worn on these really bad as they aren’t oiled properly. Then go ahead on an add a jump to ground on the brown wire for the AWD so it’s never an issue. The factory mikuni carb is the best you can get. Only replace jets and parts as necessary . All the china remakes will never run right.
Polaris Tech Tip...Scrap it and Buy a Honda or Yamaha! 😁💪.
ua-cam.com/video/srK-Xrcmm8Y/v-deo.htmlsi=dLGw_OsUKtB9L2Wh
Any idea or tips for my atv?
What would you advise on the engine oil? Is 10W40 motorcycle oil good enough to protect the cams or should you use some car motor oil for best protection since this vehicle doesn't have wet clutch? Some people above say to use 0W30 or 0W40 motor oil.
Thank you.
Polaris tech tip "the cams wear out because they arent oiled properly" 😂😂😂😂 polaris is garbage.
@@paul340mopar Really...how about CanAm? I'm looking at one
I am addicted to your videos. Your patience and knowledge is amazing!! As a medical person, PLEASE open the garage door BEFORE you run those ATV's. What state are you in?
I have absolutely no interest in the machines you fix, but your explanations about how these work is fantastic. Your knowledge is incredible.
Don't remember when i came across your videos but i enjoy them. I bought an 2005 Bruin 350 from a friend and had it little over a year now. It's been pretty reliable and helped out quite in April and May this year after a tornado and pretty sure there was in May
You sir are a saint . You have a new subscriber for this video alone . I’ve just wasted a day trying to get a proper answer online about this and exactly where it’s located. And at last I come across your fantastic video . I’m positive after tomorrow all will be fine again in my motoring world, thank you so much 🙏🏼👍
Great find for your fix. Had the same thing on a 2 stroke atv I fixed 12 years ago. I had to zip tie a rag between the carb and filter. Weird it needed more resistance for the carb to work correctly.
The way I found your channel was a video you did on a Magnum 425 right after I bought one. Very good timing for another 425 because I can't get mine to run currently. This was a nice refresher on some of the things to check and how to fix them. Thanks for the video
Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Great job on the repairs. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Put clear silicone over seat hole. New sear cover over that, good to go cosmetically.
My father in law had a magnum and it had somewhere around 30000 miles on it! Was a damn good wheeler.
That plug tester is super cool!
Good eye spotting the missing parts. I got a free 250 bcuz of the same exact missing bolt. 3 minutes and it was shifting perfectly 😊
Cant blame him for picking that muffler haha. Unless its a Honda i find older atv exhausts are either hard to find or they're so expensive its not even worth buying.
Hey Joe, I just found myself quite a few projects at my neighbors farm. Inside a shed they havent opened in years was a polaris magnum 325 and Indy lite 340 and a phazer 500 so hopefully i can get em running.
My first quad was a 330 magnum. What cold blooded pig that was! But low range on it was an absolute beast when i had to pull anything. Never again will i go back to a straight axel utility quad though, my back couldn't take it on the trails. Love your content from the UP of Michigan!
Recently came across your channel and i must say im highly impressed with your mechanical skills and i absolutely love watching your videos they are definitely entertaining and informative.
well done Joe fixed it, maybe somones shortened your air box rubber end, or mixtures out more petrol for amount of air comming into carb
Joe, with your spark plug tester, can you show what a fouled plug looks like at revs?
Yes
Do you get a lot of repeat customers when you go to sell stuff? I bet so because everything is always pretty well gone through and documented on your channel, I’m sure you’ve got a good reputation locally 👍
Man for how young you are you know tons about how these machines work, I know you look Alot of stuff up but for doing this on your own for so long you always get it right 👍 you inspire me to start my own business doing this stuff but in the area I'm in it's very unlikely. I always enjoy your videos and learn from them your the best man I very appreciate you and what you do,, and congratulations to finally having a family bro not many you're age get to have a wife and child. You are the best 💯👌👍👍 keep wrenching my friend.💯
27 minutes in, and man I think this may be the best 200 bucks you've spent yet!! What a score! (Let's see how the rest of the video goes, but man.. for what you're into it, amazing!)
edit: ok 37 minutes in now.. and man.. it has SUCH good compression, it fires RIGHT up.. sounds SO good with the intake off.. I can't wait to see what the heck is going on.. I sure hope it's not the cam lobes.. I mean it's under 4k miles wth!?
I had a 94 Sportsman two stroke. It was stolen off our property. I put a lot of work into it and that think would rip. I miss it ever since.
The Heading on this video is what one would call click bait. Nobody could fix this. LOL funny man.
nice find you cant get much for $200 now a days -- great video like always ---
I worked for a Polaris Dealer back when these were new. They have had carburetor issues from the start. If your filter holder repair don't hold you can get that and the belt cover after market from Amazon. Back then Polaris did not sell oil they called for full syn after the cams started wearing out and atf fluid in the front hubs. You don't even need Motorcycle oil because there are no clutches in the engine and oil weight depends on where you live 10w30 is fine most of the time.
So Polaris engines are not that picky about the oil type? I have a Polaris Magnum 425 6X6 but since i've always heard that it always should be used Polaris oil in Polaris 4 stroke engines i haven't used any other oil. Is it the same for transmission oil or the oil in the front hubs for Polaris ATV's and UTV's too that you can use other oil types without any problem?
@@BSS22193 Polaris Atv's are not picky about there oil as long you run synthetic oil. Transmission runs the same oil as the engine, The newer UTV's are picky about the oil weight if they call for a 5W20 use 5W20.
@@Proudpapaify Thanks a lot i understand! I have been thinking about this a lot of times when it comes to service my ATV. But can you use the same oil in the front hubs as you can use in the transmission on these older Polaris ATV's or do they need any other type of oil?
@@BSS22193 The front hubs need ATF automatic transmission fluid. That is what Polaris recommended before they started selling there own fluids.
@@Proudpapaify Ok thanks, then i know what oil types to look for when i should service my ATV. 😊
I had a similar issue on an old Kawasaki street bike with CV carbs. I replaced the air box with Uni Air Pods, and the air flow was too great. I blocked about 75% of the Air Pod with aluminium flashing, and it ran perfect.
I saw his one with the bike on the back of the truck I hoped you’d work on it today . I’ve had one for a year trying to get it right . Would die backing up wasn’t cutting out in reverse fan great idling around but full throttle or against a hill it would cut out I totally went threw it new valves cleaned carb new cam everything was good new fuel pump coils stator still ran crappy got a used regulator CDI and Rev limiter still crappy . Found a 180 main jet in it and got a 140 and it ran great then . What a pain it was and it is now back after a couple months with no spark . I was really hopeful you’d need to do more to that one . Wish I could come over and say help !!!! Also that’s one of the fastest ATVs I’ve rode .
I think with that diaphragm being loose, ya'll can drill a tiny hole in the connecting pins and put tiny screws in it for a firm fit. With that air box with the broken supports I think if ya'll scratch it up with sandpaper then spray it with brake cleaner ya'll can use that hot wax, but it is really plastic you can put a good weld on with plastic sticks in hot wax.
Sometimes I think vin is the real star , and you are the comedic side kick😅
Rubber (resistant to fuels) is normally attached to metals or nonmetals surfaces by the ad of painting the metal parts in areas where you can see it shall be attached. Let it dry. Apply the rubber part to the painted metal area and supply some pressure but mainly heat will do the cure. The paint is a special dedicated glue to ad/cure the contact areas
It's lean. Loose airbox allows in more air. Go up a size on main jet.
Another great deal. That has to be the best $200 You've ever spent. Ya it's gonna need some tires and that clutch cover. But, regardless what a good buy. Excellent work Joe💪😎
Inherited the same quad as a basket. Had to find a carb and throttle. Finally started but wouldn't run faster than an idle. I read this was indicative of a cam with a worn exhaust lobe. Pulled the cam and sure enough it was worn to almost nothing (how is that possible? Did the previous owner just idle the engine endlessly?). Anyway I replaced the cam and it ran fantasticly.
fantastic !!!.. it can also be simple Joe.. Vinny was very excited.. still honest sellers who don't rip you off .. the only thing I would replace is the silencer.. top Joe.. you deserve it really..ps..how is the ATV right outside your garage? engine...I'm really curious about...greetings
Wow, That thing is a survivor!
I know people hate Repairis quads. I've had good luck with them. Great vid.
I think Vinny was a little more interested in playing on that beautiful day 👍
Thise tractor mufflers work quite well on atvs surprisingly. I have one on my wolverine with the combination of a mower one at the back of the atv. Its so quiet you can hear the air being sucked into the carburetor.
I have the 2x4 2 stroke version of that quad. 94 Polaris 300. It’s a pretty reliable machine
This could become a good backup utility machine when you do landscaping, gardening, ice fishing, etc.
Check your intake manifold. The rubber comes loose from the aluminum and creates an air leak if any pressure is applied to the carburetor that would open the gap.
ua-cam.com/video/srK-Xrcmm8Y/v-deo.htmlsi=dLGw_OsUKtB9L2Wh
Any idea on this one?
Another successful fix, good job Joe!
Vinny shook his head no right from the start. Vinny always knows.
The few times I've pulled the carb off my of my 500 Scrambler that polaris carb mount as aggravated me, thankfully this one is a bit easier than the scrambler
Got a great deal. I would still look into a new airbox. Thanks for sharing.
thanks Joe for the help. I have 425 magnum 6x6 i had hard time tuning it this video really help thanks again!!!!
Hey Joe, Where abouts are you are? I live sioux falls area SD, and have a few drones, if you want free drone footage for your videos. Anyway, I love your channel, I know how much work it takes to do all the filming and editing on top of working on the machines. Really great work man!
For safety reasons to protect themselves from lunatics I don't see UA-cam video creators putting their locations down, and I don't blame them.
That spark plug tester is cool as heck
I had the exact same problem did all the same things you did to try and fix it though it was my air box
Turned out to be the intake boot o ring was sucking in just a bit of air . Runs perfectly now maybe give that a try
That wheeler being that fussy on the air in,
you wanna bet that teactor muffler is too restrictive also?
Also I'd coat the whole outside of air box with thin layer of silicone where the cracks are, or entirely.
Great find!
i have had the same issue on my quadrunner 250 and it was my carb bowl gasket was not sealing properly anymore as soon as i changed it it ran like a charm
Random observation... If everything checks out, as appears to be the case, then I'd start looking at what's changed or are there aftermarket parts in play. In this case, the only thing non-OEM that appears to be on it is that janky tractor exhaust. Wonder if that thing is too restrictive or something similar and is the source of the issue? You've proved that it's an airflow issue with the work you've done. My next step would be to look at the exhaust.
My grandfather has that quad. It’s a pretty nice machine.
Nice job buddy you always do amazing work i enjoy watching you go at it
Another great video. Maybe you should experiment with some plumbing pipe and develop an airflow reducer to sell to Polaris owners as a plug and play fix
Vinnie with the big jump off the trailer.....cool pup
😮great video Joe keep them coming man
anyone else hoping they are not the next person to take off that oil filter? lol.. wow, joe. cranked that thing on..
The problem that you have with it is that tractor muffler is causing restrictions with the airbox off it's allowing the fuel mixture to change so it's running better but your problem is the muffler
Had a Suzuki quad that wouldn't run at all if the air box wasn't completely sealed. Got it for 250$ quadrunner 230 I think.still you got a heck of a deal .
Maybe part of the airbox is missing at intake is there suppose to be a top of some kind that does the same as your tape trick
so eventually, a loose carb piece and a leak in the airfilter did the trick. Nice one.. hopefully someday you will try to repair another ltz400, i love those quads, have one myself ofcourse😂
If you remove the slide there are two security screws to remove the main jet housing in the carb. There are two o-rings on it that rot and cause this issue.
You make everything looks so easy
It's lean, by adding the tape over the pipe your choking it thus the carb pulls more fuel less air. Raise the needle if its a clip type or go to a slightly larger jet/mixture.
Happy Days Joe Has Posted 🔥🔥🔥
Luved the air box fix.
What’s with the noise in the background the beeping is loud on the video. Love those quad bring memories back when I was a kids
Dude, your fleet has outgrown your shelter capacity. You need a pole barn in that area next to your yard! Would make for some cool content and give you much needed space
Had same top end problem worth my Sportsman 500. Carbs are really sensitive to air leaks and tuning. You must have the airbox on when adjusting carb
Maybe try a different carb jet, if you had to choked down the air, could be jetting issues
I do not think it is fixed correctly. It did not come from the factory with tape. I think what you have is a air intake manifold leak when the air box is on. Its probably pushing on the carburetor
and changing the angle, opening a leak. When the box is off it relaxes the angle and the leak closes and it runs great , so not a box problem. By putting the air box back on you reopen the leak then your putting tape over the air intake which in turn makes it run richer , like the choke is on part way , compensating for the extra air coming into the system. I would check the intake manifold when the box is on and off, without tape on the box. That's just my thoughts, really enjoy your videos
I was thinking the same thing. It revel fine without the box but not with the box so the slide was working fine. I think you got it right.
Reved
I thought the main jet was a bit small as well. There for awhile I thought the exhaust may have been restricted.🤷♂️
Double check fuel pump. Seemed weak from the clip. If that's weak, will give the same symptoms. Had same issue on my 500ho. New aftermarket pump is cheap from Dennis kirk
On mine the neck for the air box would flatten out cutting off the air flow. I threw it away and bam fixed.
One thing I noticed is before you took the plug out, you should have blown out the hole. When they are in there stuff falls in but you already know this. She’s a runner.
Make a little test track with obstacles on your land. That would be fun to see.
Solar panel electric fence will work great for your garden 👍
The jets might be wrong, the air box opening should match the jet size on a cv carb.
On my 99 400 EX whenever the intake boot (between the carb and the air filter) comes loose from the carb it doesn't want to start, It just coughs and spits. Basically the carb would get too much air and not enough fuel. It was a mystery what was going on at first because everybody was telling me to take off the air box lid to let more air in to make the quad go faster, with no concern for installing the proper jet afterwards. I have dumb friends & sometimes we have to learn the hard way 😁
Sure hope you have a cover for that clutch , left leg damage in future if not.
To fix plastic I’ve had better luck with JB weld or a solder iron and zip ties for solder…You could also zip tie the air box closed or a small ratchet strap around it…just a idea but it sounds good now ,,,,good deal you got
like your videos--you seem quite intelligent on bikes/atv's--but also i am amazed at your property--i hate 2 be nosey--but how many acres do you have & how much at the property--it is heaven on earth--you have scenery i only wish i could have--take care--
It’s probably the exhaust. Air fuel mix is probably messed up try playing with the jets and see, just like tuning for aftermarket exhaust.
