My guess is the previous owner left ethanol fuel in it for too long. There are folks that will stand by their ethanol fuel but in my experience it has always went bad like you see in this video when left too long . I suspect that ethanol attracts water which then creates the muck in the tank and carbs. I don’t see that problem with premium non ethanol fuel, my Honda 4 trax had at least 5 year old premium none ethanol fuel in it and continued to start right up and run perfectly every time. I finally drained the tank and put fresh gas in it. The gas I drained looked fine so I divyed it up between my motorcycles that I regularly use….no problems. 😎
Joe I can't believe how far you've come over the years from working in your parents garage to how well you're doing now. Good for you my man. You work very hard on this channel and it It shows.👍
I need to find one for parts for my 01 Rubicon. Wow, the tool kit was actually with it. Those Hondamatic units will last forever as long as the oil is serviced regularly and has never been run dry or anything. Also, when replacing the angle sensor, using the cheapo Chinese ones can cause swashplate issues when they fail. That's the sensor that it's most important to replace with a high-quality sensor like oem, Sensortech, CW, and Wrench Rabbit. I'm currently in the process of basically re-building my Rubicon with 6500 mi on the odometer. Right now, i've got the rear end apart, cleaning the housing, replacing the bearings and seals, and getting ready for the new ring gear/axle shaft. Great video to wake up to this morning.
People need to stop being so scared of dogs,I get that some attack and whatnot but that's just bad training or lack of it..they sense your fear and take advantage
Used to own a 2007 Honda Foreman and had zero trouble except for the ESP sensor had to replace. Foreman and rancher bikes are great. Love your Pup Vinnie too.. Hes a cutie
Looks as though someone tried to sabotage this ride! Or gas mixed with water , but sludge like this is many years of neglect. Brother you are the greatest mechanic on the tube. Thanks!
Simple owners maintenance at required intervals, they'll go for a long time.... years.. but that means we'd be struggling for business. Oh well, glad to see well kept machines. These farmers around here, buy them and run them til they die, then expect us to fix them... great vid!!
I enjoy watching your repair videos and I learn lots from watching. I have a 2017 Polaris Sportsman 450 EPS. It has been great and reliable. Changed factory battery from wet cell to AGM sealed. Better option for the EPS and added winch. One other thing: I think you should wear a 2Vintage tee shirt or hat in your videos. Great content.
I purchased a 2004 Honda few years back 48000km needed a piston and a top end noise. After replaced piston engine sounded great. Really enjoy your videos great job
Oil was put in before it was crated and left factory. Had one similar come in for service, was running horrible, asked gim if hes ever changed the oil, he looked at me like it was new. Why it was fine. The 1uad was trashed, drained it and big chunks of gunk plopped out. Filter was original, it was packed about solid.great job Joe!!!
See that in my shop all the time, my opinion, some folks don't need power sports machines.. some stuff we get in just blows my mind. Seen it all in last 5 years. Still love having my own OHV REPAIR shop. In my blood.
I own a 2009 Rubicon since it was new. I find 10W-40 a little thick for the pump makes the bike A little sluggish I find 10:30 works better little easier on the pump great videos as always
When you opened up that air filter i thought it had been submerged in a pond and was totalled. Turns out the seller was a true gent and i think that quad is my favourite 2vintage machine. It looks good and sounds great. A perfect tool for cutting trails.
Finally bought a machine that pretty much was just what the seller told you for a decent ATV. About time someone is on the up and up when selling a bike to you.😊
My brother has one of these and he's had for close to 20 plus years and he's done a bunch a stuff with it towing things, plowing snow pulling stuff and knock on wood it's still runs great. His is I think maybe the light army green. But he takes really good care of anything he has whether it's his vehicles or outdoor power equipment he's got equipment that's close to 30 years old and they still run.
Nice score, Joe. Little maintenance & you have yourself a really nice utility quad. Those Hondas are bullet proof. Something therapeutic about mowing grass. I mow our 5 acre property with a zero turn
I'm happy for u that you found a good deal and an honest seller. I would have trouble buying something that wouldn't start up. I think you should really play hardball with anyone that is selling something they cannot crank up right there in front of u. You are the one that is taking ALL the risk and you gotta make sellers understand that. Your offers have to reflect the risk you are taking with the purchase.
I picked up a trx500fa2(same thing as yours) recently as well. Paid $600 for it. A carb clean, freed up the rear brakes. Runs quite well. Just doing maintenance like adjusting the valves, oil changes etc. Mine as well had water siting in the air box. Makes you wonder how it got into it just sitting.
Great show. One of my favorites on Utube. If you want to keep mice out of your little shelter get a chlorine tablet for a swimming pool and lay it inside someplace that is not touching anything. Put one in my patio storage box and haven't had any mice or bugs in years.
Good tip. I've found that soaking the foam air filter surround in peppermint oil will also keep mice (along with chipmunks and pack rats!) from nesting in an ATV's air box.
Thats the first time I have seen gas in the floots i have been waiting to see that for a long time i love watching your channel love and respect from England
Great find, good looking, and nice size quad. Now let's tear it apart. Lots of learning/teaching moments. Beautiful day for a ride in the Dairy State, although any day out of the office No mice or ants were displaced in the production of this video. We were able to relocate all involved 🚽

Hey great video !!! put that there float in a vacuum sealer and the leak will appear , just use your skill to operate the sealer to what is needed . Thanks !!!
Nice! I got a 2001 from my grandpa that I need to get running. He bought it new and it served him well for almost 20 years. The es stopped working so he rigged something up to shift it with his foot/hand.
Hey joe something you should invest into is a set of jet brushes. It’s a kit that has about 10 different brushes to clean out passage ways in the carb and obviously jets. I have three kits one that’s brass and one that a rigid nylon type material and one that’s very soft. I’ve saved a few carbs using these kits over the years.
You should really try using Rotella T4 or T6 oil. I've been using the T4 many years, read the back of the bottle it has JASO MA/MA2 rating. Can beat the price.
Love your videos and your work precedure is very good but you could uncover fuel starvation issues in seconds with an ether spray. My personal favourite in Australia is a product marketed as "Start Ya Bastard".
Joe I just had the same problem with my 400at rancher. Petcock was full of rust. The fuel gauge was sticky and rusty from water in the tank. I soaked it in vinegar overnight and sanded down the steel. Now the float goes up and down freely
Could a new carb run with a really dirty tank/filter/peckcock and rotting hoses look like this carb over six month/a year? I'm thinking yes? Maybe buddy wasn't lying after all? I think this 4-wheeler is the best sounding machine you've bought.. at least from the videos I've watched so far. Awesome buy!
