Thank you for this. I just lost my mechanic dad two weeks ago, & he was always my go to guy for car problems...so I wasn't sure how I'd ever get this done without him. Your video made it feel possible. Just waiting on the part to arrive now. 🖤
Extremely professionally done video and amazing clarity...just top quality , new sub! Very helpful information. I am changing out my steering gear and replacing both front hub bearing assemblies this weekend (yes me lol) on my 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 ext cab long bed Pick up truck 2wd.. already have all the parts. Thanks again !!
Best way to bleed system is with a large rubber cork in the fill neck with hole drilled in it and vacuum pump attached. Or go lock to lock with wheels elevated 20 times without engine running. Just trying to help. Great work
Badass video! I need to replace my rack and pinion on my 2000 sierra. One thing I will say is get the rotors turned or replace on this truck they are warped bad and mine were too. Thanks
Thanks for the video, really helpful! What was the grounding wire for. The rack and pinion I installed doesn’t have threading for the grounding wire. If I remove it and don’t ground the rack will it cause any problems?
Great video guys, with lots of good info. You mentioned that the lug nuts are torqued to 100 ft lbs, but the specs for my 05 Silverado 2 wd 1500 call for 140 ft lbs.
I couldn`t stop watching... Great video...I need this done on my truck (2007 Sierra) a little above my pay grade though, I`ll have to pay...you guys are awesome
Great video. I have a new rack and pinion I need to install on my 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 classic, and this video is very helpful. I subscribed so I could maybe see more videos on your Chevy.
At the 12:10 mark you talk about the bushing caps or whatever they are called for the mounts. I bought an Edelman part# 2015 rack and pinion and I cannot get them pressed in. I tried hammering them and I tried using an impact gun with the bolt and nut to drive them in. Then, I measured the sleeve with calipers and compared it to the old rack. The holes are much smaller. Has anyone had this problem with the Edelman brand new rack and pinion?
I replaced the rack and l Pion in my 2005 Chevy Silverado in 2018 then I brought it to the garage and they said it was bad so I replaced it again did I mess up and waste my money should I have called the previous garage and ask them
How is the rack holding up? I have heard that a bunch of rebuilt racks start leaking pretty fast after replacing I’m just looking for a good quality one
Is this a model to where you have to worry about a steering angle sensor? I had a issue with it on a Tahoe and my newer challenger when replacing racks. I had to zero the sensor back out then attach my steering shaft after I moved the rack to meet the steering shaft to install so I didn’t have a issue with killing my clock spring.
Question? Did it clank when you turned the wheel left and right while sitting still? I have really bad wander left and right while driving. It is not the balljoint or tie rods
I have an 06 silverado that rides really rough. Any little bump, and feels like the wheel are going to shake off. Any suggestions? I already replaced upper and lower control with bushings and upper and lower ball joints
In the middle of changing upper and lower Control Arms and springs right now, no help and all breaker bar, no power tools. Yeah, and changing All ball joints, the ones that come already pressed in the control arms look of low quality, I hate rivets btw...Yeah, and while I was under there the R&P rubber bushing look wasted...If it ain't one thing... *Love The Red Dodge!*....I used to have an "89. So Many Trucks And Not Enough Time!
If I have the truck elevated right after replacing my rack and I turn it over and hop in to get the air bubbles out. Why would my steering wheel be bouncing going from lock to lock? No wheels on it.. not going down the road.. just finishing your last step in the video.. what could be the reason
@@TheGasTap Except for the dissimilar metal corrosion between the aluminum rack and the steel truck frame. But you know better than those engineers that designed and tested the truck. 🙈
How would it not ground it’s self being that it’s all metal? Housing, gear, tie rods. Seems pretty grounded. Please explain the science here. Thanks for you comment.
@@TheGasTap Google Galvanic Corrosion of dissimilar metal parts. The bonding, or ground cable provides a path to ground the electricity produced between metal parts made of different materials. Two dissimilar metals when placed together, (especially in a wet salty environment) behave like a battery. Voltage is produced, but so is corrosion at the contact points. It's a common practice. Its why you don't attach aluminum with steel bolts or steel with aluminum pop rivets. But you are right. It's not gonna make a difference in function. Just the next guy that has to remove those rusty bolts.
I understand the dissimilar metal issue. I’m not understanding why a ground wire makes a difference when the aluminum is only the body and the rest of the internal parts are steel. Ground wire then also goes to steel. What’s the ground wire doing that the internal steel parts grounding to the steering knuckle then to the control arms aren’t doing?
What symptoms were you having that causes you to change this? All of my ball joints, etc seem to be tight but my steering wheel can significant play. I don’t think it is the lower or intermediate shaft. It seems like the moment is in the rack and pinion. Thoughts?
The inner tie rods were worn out. Have someone turn the steering wheel while you watch for play in all the joints. (Only turn the steering wheel the about of the “play”. Not full turns )
@@TheGasTap thanks for your reply. I had a mechanic check for play in all the joints. He said everything is tight. When I rotate the wheels back and forth, the play seems to be where the lower shaft meets the rack. The shaft turns at the rack and the wheel dont move. Im wondering if that is a symptom of a back rack and pinion?
The inner tie rod has a ball joint attachment, (ball and socket). They wear out. Most rack and pinion steering units have replaceable Inner joints, but General Motors decided they would rather sell the whole rack and pinion steering gear because , hell why not sell a whole unit for 600 bucks instead of a couple of 30 dollar tie rods when they wear out.
Have any of yall had problems with replacement steering racks for these trucks? Ive got really bad play in mine as i offroad it. Every replacement i can find has bad reviews which makes me not want to waste the time. Thanks
Very helpful video I struggled with the hose unions on the rack they were hellishly tight but i did what you did and disconnected the low pressure hose and took the fitting out with the rack off very useful tip
As you guys probably already know these GMC's are notorious for rusting underneath and the tubings are cheap and problematic, I have replaced all the brake, fuel (and patched) the transmission lines and now the line on the rack and pinion popped, I ordered them through Amazon (because in my area) NO BODY CARRIES THESE LINES waiting for second line to arrive and will be reinstalling new lines on the rack and pinion.

Really good guidance on a component that has a lot of connections
Doing this tomorrow on a 2004 Silverado. Thanks!

Still good as new.
Thanks for the video. Helped me do this same job today.

Interesting I have done that a long time ago. Thanks for showing
I have an 06 silverado that rides really rough. Any little bump, and feels like the wheel are going to shake off. Any suggestions? I already replaced upper and lower control with bushings and upper and lower ball joints
So many factors. I would have to look at it. Shocks, hub, tie rods etc.
The arm moves coming out of the rack with my tie rod that means the racks bad right
When I shake the tire back and forth
That sounds like the inner tie rod, so yes. You’re correct.

Air in the lines. Turn it off and let it sit for a bit.
The fluid will foam up when it’s low.

Nicely done thanks a lot.
I got a 2004 Sierra and the boots on both sides got leaks. Should I try to just replace the boots or replace the whole rack and pinion?
Sounds like the inner tie rod seals are leaking under the boots. I would just replace the rack.
Damn, how much was the rack and pinion?
Not sure. $180 sounds familiar

Good job guys.
Will this be my problem on a 05 tahoe it road wanders really bad?
Possibly but I’d get under the truck and diagnose it before buying parts.
Is this the same for the 2002 Chevy suburban
I would assume so. You can look up the part numbers for both to see if they are the same.
No those have steering boxes
could you have swapped the breather tube form the old rack?
No, they were shaped completely different. You can see when we pulled the old rack out, there is a bend in the tube. The new rack had a straight tube.
Good video, useful tips there, not for me though, I drive a Mercedes saloon. LOL.
Did you end up putting that ground wire back on there some where?
No. I figured there’s enough ground through the tie rods.

No
I'm here because my rack is going out when I changed the inner tie rod one of the boots was full of oil

Hmm. That’s been a little while ago and I can’t remember. Probably left it off. Its not for electric current. Just electrolysis

I’m not sure.

No

What is the cross tube called and what does it do? Thanks!
It’s just an air crossover since the boots are sealed.
