Weirdly enough it’s a good thing this game was made. Apparently this was the game that got WB Games attention enough to buy the rights to MK after Midway went bankrupt. So if this game never existed, MK may have never been revived.
Fun fact, Raiden and Shao Kahn aren't brothers at all. For some reason the writer of those bios pulled that plot point from Mortal Kombat Annihilation and inserted it into Raiden's bio.
Much as I personally love that this game exists, because I just love crossovers even if they make zero sense, I can 100% see why most people just ignore this game. Weirdly though, according to an interview with NRS about Aftermath, they said there was a scene where Raiden and Liu Kang discuss if they can trust Shang Tsung, and I guess that was meant as a nod to MK vs DC, or at least thats what they said? Anyway, doing some googling, apparently this game is canon to both the MK Multiverse (whether it's one of Kronika's many failed timelines or just earlier than Deadly Alliance idk) and the Injustice universe in DC's multiverse which is still kinda nuts lol
That wouldn’t have happened in any mk universe. Not even my gta verse. And the gta verse has its guardians of the milky galaxy and it ain’t the marvel or mcu guardians of the galaxy. Star lord would be sued by the elder gods for copyright infringement. But Star lord wouldn’t care and uses it anyways. But anyways. Raiden would be some god guardian of his sector. And the red dead redemptions strange top hat man would be the guardian of the gta earth sector. Roaming across the sector for potential guardians of his sector. And looked at John Marston in 1911. And seemed to reject his offer. But Liu Kang would be an elder god of this era. The new era. The gta verse. Because it seemed that this universe was a rebooted universe that had older eras merged into one. Or so it seems. But Liu Kang allowed to create two versions of each mk character. Even he himself is an elder god. But another liu kang is friends with 2 kung Laos. Elder. And lesser. And a raiden who doesn’t have god abilities. Just a farmer from a village in the land of rice fields. And is the most beloved farmer. Even in the white lotus. Founded by liu kang, his philosophy expands to the avatar earth. And it’s a secret society there. Protecting the avatar. A human being with the spirit of Raava. A light spirit who is the bridge of physical and spiritual world. Shao Kahn would rule out world. But general shao is a militant dragon edenian general who wants to protect the edenian freehold from out world empire. Led by shao Kahn. And has some intolerance of outsiders. Liu Kang did remember his father. And owes his allegiance. And there’s three Shang tsungs. One in outworld. A former earth realmer. Who sold out his monk brothers for power. Another from the village. Selling snake oils to unwise customers. Surviving for coins and living another day. And the third happens to be from another timeline. Who witnessed a resetting of his universe and wants revenge on elder god liu kang.
At the time i enjoyed this game simply for the story but was always puzzled why the fatality's were so toned down & the lack of gore made it feel like it wasnt a MK game. Lack of fighters didn't help either.
At the beginning, the way you talk about it having no relevance to the MK story makes it sound as if you were expecting it to. I don't know why you would though? these sorts of crossover fighters never have any sort of relevance to their respective franchises.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was just made in the wrong decade where DC was too shy to push past a T-rating, with Injustice 1 & 2 not being around. Also, Armageddon should've been the one to have these graphics and mechanics. Instead of being a reskin of Deception. (The next-gen game Ed Boon truly wanted to make in the late-2000s was a Mortal Kombat 8 that looks like Gears of War.)
I have played the game in the past and got me in to Mortal Kombat but looking on it back now It made me realize that 3D combat wasn't a good idea for Mortal Kombat in the grants scheme of things going for with a franchise. They should have stuck with 2D it worked for Mortal Kombat.
It will sound but i had fun played this game. Scorpion was so OP in this then Sub Zero and Liu Kang. Sonya Blade had a lot combos and kicks that made things difficult to block
In retrospect, this game is dull and shallow, but as MK fans, don't act like this game wasn't amazing when it came out. It just had a lack of content. The story mode was awesome, and online servers were good. Not to mention the amazing Dark Kahn. Playing as him was awesome.
I thought the Raiden and Shao Kahn being brothers thing was only a brainfart by the movie Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Now we need for Shinnok to be their father and the fuckery will be complete :D
I actually see this as an important release for Mortal Kombat because it essentially is the foundation of future games from this studio. Given MK1 is kinda a disaster. I would like to see a remake of this or Injustice 3 before we get a new MK.
As bad to meh as it is, if we didn’t want MK to possibly die off this is definitely something that needed to happen. Plus it helped to get more people into the series.
I think you start the video off all wrong: "After the release of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Midway decided the next big mainline title in the MK series would be a crossover with the DC Universe." This isn't exactly true. Armageddon wasn't very successful, and it certainly wasn't very beloved by day one fans. Furthermore, it was competing with 3D fighting games that were much, much better. Deception and Shaolin Monks were great games, but Armageddon fell short. I distinctly remember nobody actually playing the game, back then. I'm talking about friends who all grew up playing MK games on the SNES in the 90s, and everybody owning Playstations and having tons of games. Armageddon just wasn't relevant. Perhaps a younger generation's first introduction could've been Armageddon, and you do get fans saying they liked that game, but I think that this is because they hadn't grown up playing all previous titles. And they'd written themselves in a corner with MK:A's end-of-all-existence storyline. It felt like the end of the franchise, because it effectively ended the entire story. Anyway, on top of that, Midway was having financial issues. They were actually planning to reboot the Mortal Kombat storyline, after MK:A. The title for that game was in fact Mortal Kombat 8. Concept art still exists of that game, and you can Google Vincent Proce's work on it, who was a creative designer at the time, working for Midway. The art clearly shows a way more gritty, realistic and ominous reinterpreting of classic characters, like Raiden, Kano, and Scorpion. His 'new' Sub-Zero design, to this day, I think is probably the coolest design for Sub-Zero that I've ever seen. In fact, NRS would later take his concept art of MK8 Sub-Zero and use it for MKX Sub-Zero, although tweaking the design and kinda failing to do it justice. So a darker, more eerie approach to the original storyline, which was a great idea, because previous games had a bit of a cartoony vibe to them due to how the characters were rendered. And Armageddon didn't even have proper fatals. They didn't initially plan to do a DCU crossover, because they wouldn't have had the legal rights for that. So what happened? Ed Boon suddenly managed to get WB involved, having been a DC fan himself, and so now "Mortal Kombat 8" got canceled, and MKvsDCU got prioritized. WB wanted them to do the cross-over game, but they had a lot of input in the design and approach. The result was an absolutely crap 'MK' game that literally nobody played back in the day. It was even more hated than MK:A was. Still, MKvsDCU did well enough; generating sufficient income to call it successful, but this had more to do with drawing in a curious DC fanbase, than actual day one MK fans bothering with the game. This was NOT an MK game in our eyes. Hell, DC comics weren't even that popular here in the Netherlands. Nobody cared, and I really viewed it as the end of the MK franchise. Then after this, and despite the supposed financial success, Midway goes belly up, and there were other circumstances involved in that, but in part it had to do with how MKvsDCU was received by 'real' fans. Objectively speaking, there are some positive points that could be mentioned in regards to vsDC, but this just wasn't Mortal Kombat anymore. So Midway implodes, files for bankruptcy, and that was it. So now WB comes to the rescue, and acquires the entire IP, including all physical buildings that were previously owned by Midway. WB buys the whole shebang, after having caused the downfall of the franchise (at least, from the perspective of the fans). Midway employees that stayed now became Netherrealm Studios; just a new name for Midway, while others left the company (including Vincent Proce, for example), and WB has the right to add their own employees. Ed Boon now works for WB, who now owned the IP him and John Tobias (but really; Tobias ought to be credited most) originally conceived. Well done, Ed! The new title had to become a success, and so WB poured resources into the making of MK9, which was a reboot game (go figure). Basically, "Mortal Kombat 8", but according to WB. And this shows. The overall aesthetic style and somewhat cartoony design of MK9 is clearly a continuation of MKvsDCU, but everything else is better. MK9 really was a fun game, and I do consider it second only to MKX in terms of 'new era' games. But a part of me always wondered 'what could've been'. The dark, serious reboot they had in mind prior to WB's involvement. We'll never know.
@@steele1 I remember when MK9 came out. I played a lot of MKvsDC online and MK9 was like sliding into a clean well worn pair of pajamas. Besides getting rid of the sidestep button, MK9 felt very similar imho.

Some of the characters appearances that were not in the previous film like Jade crytex night wolf ext were so small I don’t know why the waste millions of extra dollars to cast them especially,y crytex he doesn’t even speak in his brief fight with lue kang. Scorpion and sub zero 2 cameos were cool but they could have done a better way of having Kanta be kidnapped and taken to the out world dimension that had actual storey relevance and actually mattered.
The gameplay was fun online was dope loved when people would spam the flash unless you used scorpion, the game all in all is a 7/10 when it comes to straight up gameplay, for those bugging about the gore, if it was back in the day id say then go play deception
When the game came out, NO ONE called it "MK8" so why the f*ck are fans calling Mortal Kombat (2011) "MK9" and so on? Ed Boon said in numerous interviews that MK vs DCU isn't MK8. This game was basically a retelling of Mortal Kombat 3 but with DC characters. No one calls the X-Men vs Street Fighter games part of the main Street Fighter series, so why did so many fans call Mortal Kombat (2011) MK9? Initially even Ed Boon said that because MK(2011) was a reboot, it wasn't going to be part of the original numbered story. When MKX was announced, Ed Boon said the "X" didn’t mean 10, it was supposed to represent a "variable" like we aren't supposed to know what the number is. Then MK11 comes out, completely invalidating his previous statements. I personally think Ed Boon caved to fan pressure because so many of us were simple-minded and just thought every game with Mortal Kombat characters was an MK game continuing the story. This is probably why Ed Boon named the new game MK1. So fans can stop giving unofficial numbers to his games. Too bad he didn't put enough thought into the story.
I mean it's bad, but it's so bad that it's even funny, somehow they failed to realise that they need to make it R-rated with MK being villains that invade DC universe, no other way around it, basically 360* Injustice - but once again it needs to be written by very good writer that not gonna bow down to woke mindset. Jax meets Cyborg : "Ha yo, Ballrog are you copying my style? you wouldn't beat me in Street Fighter 5!!"

Weirdly enough it’s a good thing this game was made. Apparently this was the game that got WB Games attention enough to buy the rights to MK after Midway went bankrupt. So if this game never existed, MK may have never been revived.
im sure for the endings they have them in the extras you could have used that for your recordings

Love your content keep up the great work
I think that was a great crossover snd s very entretainig game. I would love to see an mk vs injustice someday

Thank you
just been watching your MK reviews and actually catching one hours from premiering 🥤🍿
But many characters didn’t make the cut in this game!!!!😢
Kano becoming Joker in his ending was so ahead of its time lmao
The heroes here have the most boring design possible, also, Liu Kang look like Whindersson Nunes
O do mk11 parece mais o whindersson
Steele be always forgetting to record 😂
I actually kinda wanna play this game, great video BTW!
Good video and great points but the A.i voice makes me wanna tear my hair out fr fr
The Raiden/Shao Kahn family detail was taken from the '97 Mortal Kombat Annihilation movie
I had a headache, so the podcast section came in clutch
The one person who enjoyed it being empty lmao
I still can’t believe Raiden and ShaoKahn are brothers
Fun fact, Raiden and Shao Kahn aren't brothers at all. For some reason the writer of those bios pulled that plot point from Mortal Kombat Annihilation and inserted it into Raiden's bio.
it’s fucking 12pm your late but it’s ok plus you make good mortal kombat videos😃
Ok, but why was 1/3 of the video just blank?
Finally I've been waiting for this one
Loved the video i also enjoyed the podcast got some cleaning done :)
The game served as both midway's last title before bankruptcy and subsequent absorption by Warner Bros and it also primed the market for Injustice
It conceived the idea of injustice and the MK reboot. 2011 Mortal Kombat. Not the recent Mortal I Kombat. Or MK 1 2023
and both injustices are just as sh!t as this game. injustice 3/mk1 is just as sh!t as this game.

I love Subzero Ending in this game he become his own Batman and I wonder will he run into Mr.Freeze in a fight.
What's hilarious about the limited violence. Is that DC has been extremely gory in the past 7 years.
Raiden and Shia khan being brothers is from the movies

This was the last mk game i learned how to play before mk1 came out.
Ah yes, the game that graced us with Wonder Woman's infamous 'Cootch Copter' XD
Awesome Video Bro! I'm glad this game exists.
How sick would it be if instead of Injustice 3, we get MK vs Injustice. And its rated M with fatalities and super moves somehow combined.
They need to put these costumes in all the new MK games
Scorpions best look in my opinion is in this game. Its so definitive. And Baraka? He is my favorite character ever!
My nephews had this loved playing with them ❤
22m42s I didn't no agent 47 was a guest char?
Honestly, out of all the MK games this one kicked my ass the most. Dark Kahn is a POS.
it should exist for one reason this game saved the franchice because without it we would never see mk again
Otherwise mortal kombat wouldn’t have continued on. Even by Warner bros.
it should have been allowed to die. because now it's an atrocity to its own legacy.
Plus without it we wouldn't have injustice
At the time i enjoyed this game simply for the story but was always puzzled why the fatality's were so toned down & the lack of gore made it feel like it wasnt a MK game. Lack of fighters didn't help either.
Why does the ending reader sound like taven
At the beginning, the way you talk about it having no relevance to the MK story makes it sound as if you were expecting it to. I don't know why you would though? these sorts of crossover fighters never have any sort of relevance to their respective franchises.
Yeah that’s fair tbh
Great podcast
Half to admit this was the first MK
Crossover tho.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was just made in the wrong decade where DC was too shy to push past a T-rating, with Injustice 1 & 2 not being around.
Also, Armageddon should've been the one to have these graphics and mechanics. Instead of being a reskin of Deception.
(The next-gen game Ed Boon truly wanted to make in the late-2000s was a Mortal Kombat 8 that looks like Gears of War.)
love your vids normally. but this one is kinda trash. you couldn’t even go back and fix the recording mistake… gonna have to dislike this one dawg
Captain marvel noises is fucking hilarious
Wait sub zero became ice batman wtf
As bad to meh as it is, if we didn’t want MK to possibly die off this is definitely something that needed to happen. Plus it helped to get more people into the series.
free money for free content
Holy shit thank you so much!!
This game was goofy asf.
Nice video
You really like the word "fuck" lol

This game was only hated because you weren’t seeing characters get ripped in half
And yet scorpions fire finisher made

Not to mention the kiss of death.
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 exactly, if they’re still dying then I don’t get why it matters
@@puncha_mac yep.
I think you start the video off all wrong:
"After the release of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Midway decided the next big mainline title in the MK series would be a crossover with the DC Universe."
This isn't exactly true.
The gameplay of MK9 and MKvsDC is basically identical.
What lol
@@steele1 I remember when MK9 came out. I played a lot of MKvsDC online and MK9 was like sliding into a clean well worn pair of pajamas. Besides getting rid of the sidestep button, MK9 felt very similar imho.
Fyi its cannon to the injustice storyline
MK8 just needs some mods haha
Shao Kahn and Raiden being brothers is complete bullshit. It has never been stated in any other game. It was first brought up in the movie ‘Mortal Kombat: Annihilation’, so yeah…!
Some of the finishers made it to
MK 9.
Dude raden told lue Kane and some other defenders that shaokong was his brother at the very beginning of the second mortal kombat movie. O wait I forgot I’m in the super minority of people that saw that second tripquel sequel film to the Paul Anderson original film and liked it an is crazy enough to agnowledge that he had own annihilation at one point .yes it has a shit ton of problems chronological and storey telling wise with it and pacing . trying to make the film as an adaptation of the next three game sequel mortal kombat 2 3 and 4 did not help.
Too bad he didn't put enough thought into the story.
shit just doesnt even make sense anymore lmfao the titling just got so weird
I like this game because Shazam is called captain marvel pretty cool
Atleast its combos are godlike rip for the casuals
I mean it's bad, but it's so bad that it's even funny, somehow they failed to realise that they need to make it R-rated with MK being villains that invade DC universe, no other way around it, basically 360* Injustice - but once again it needs to be written by very good writer that not gonna bow down to woke mindset. Jax meets Cyborg : "Ha yo, Ballrog are you copying my style? you wouldn't beat me in Street Fighter 5!!"
I play through the MK story. Started the DC story. And at that point this game just sucks. The characters are so unbalanced. The response seems so slow. Made me hate playing this game.
