It’s a wonderful all around, economical, no frills bike. Just rode from Atlantic Canada to New York on it. 2000km return trip. Super comfortable, even on the highways and interstates. Did almost 1000km in one day. Love my 2022
Nice to hear! Is the seat comfy even after a long ride? I know a couple bike reviewers in my country who found all the CB500 variants getting uncomfy after around 2 hours of riding, although ofcourse it very much depends on the person. I'm sure there are aftermarket seats with thicker padding though but it might be too much of an investment.
I want to ride South East Asia on a 2022 do you think it would do the job? Any points you can give me? I am looking a three month tour of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and then back to Chiang Mai :)
@@sonminorimitsuu2838 definitely honestly 500c is overkill in asia i did the whole of vietnam on an xr150 which was about right also did the mae hong song loop on a 125cc scooter because these two guys i met at the hostel hadnt ridden before and we did it together.
@@barney1967 Thanks Barney, do you think the XR125 would be enough to Thailand and Vietnam? And would you rent of someone like Styles, they have a great reputation..Also did you ever encounter dodgy coppers in Vietnam?
I’ve owned dozens of bikes including crf250l, klx, Big Bang R1, xj6, gsxr 750, a few cruisers and my 2018 cb500x was my absolute favourite. Absolutely jack of all trades, unbeaten reliability, incredible range, Can’t wait to buy a new one!
I'm not the biggest fan of Honda but they have an absolute winner with this bike. With the way the world is heading at the moment. A smaller economical bike will be just the ticket. Great review thank you 👍
I have the 2021 model and absolutely love it. It is perfect for my needs. I think the single disk front break is perfectly adequate, and the dual disk is probably not necessary, but as you said, it only helps to have a bit more braking power. I have the black version with red detailing, which I thought was the best looking one, until I saw that green for 2022. It looks brilliant. Well done to Honda, they often stick to their classic red, but the new model looks absolutely fantastic.
Yeah the second disc isn't "needed" but it's nice to see Honda actually upgrading the specs of this bike year on year. Consider Suzuki's approach with the SV650 by comparison - the price keeps going up but the bike hasn't actually changed much in 20 years.
Also have a 2021, was a bit of a shock having " weak " brakes after riding an XJR1300 with its Race spec brakes for 20+ years, but for my needs a 15 mile commute on country B roads it is enough for me, and brakes are actually fine for the power of the bike. Motorway long distance......not its forte in my sore arse experience ( and I am a slim 11.5 stone). Fuel economy on my weekly route of 50mph road is 92mpg, which is brilliant, who needs a gas guzzling sports bike to be sat in traffic, or flooded roads. Honest bike.
1 You will be able to beat almost any car off the line. 2 With a top speed of 100+, won't hold up traffic 3 Unless you want a road rocket, you have a bike for long term ownership. 4 If you want, you can mod it is up.
For anyone concerned about the stock seat, I found that adding an Airhawk made a big difference for me for longer rides. A more expensive option is an aftermarket seat, such as the Seat Concepts seat.
I'm side-grading from the CBR500R to this 500X this season. I absolutely love the powertrain but wanted some light off-road capability for Canadian backrounds (and our "main" roads...), and better wind protection. The exceptional fuel economy and relaxed longevity of the engine (even for a Honda) make it such a great mile muncher, and we can't really go very fast where I live anyways.
@@ShoFPSS It's about as cheap as insurance gets, at least for me here in Ontario (where the insurance rates are through the roof). I think only a dual sport might be less but even the Ninja 400 and R3 were about 30-40% more to insure than my 500R.
@@Thirsty_Fox WHAT? CBR500r is much cheaper to insure than ninja 400 or r3? i was planning to get the r3 if im going to go for sportbikes since its lower CC so I thought its gonna be cheaper. Welp I can’t take the r3 off-roading but I can take cb500x anywhere the r3 can go. I also live in southern ontario near toronto plus im under 25 so for sure my premium for insurance gonna be way higher
@@ShoFPSS For me, it was about $1,100 for a Ninja 400 and $800 for the 500R and 500X. It has to do with the accident and claim statistics on the bikes and not just the displacement alone. Definitely call around though and check all the bikes you're interested in as some places have way better rates (TD seems to be one of the better ones here). The 500R/X also get better fuel economy than the R3 and N400, oddly enough. I'd say the 400 is the most fun for track use but for everything else I prefer the 500.
@@Thirsty_Fox WOW REALLY?? the only reason I was only looking up the r3 or ninja 400 was because i thought it would be the cheapest on insurance wise. I know it could be also a difference wether when you own the bike or finance it but I was planning to finance an r3 but now, I might take a look at the cbr500r if ever I go sportsbike. Thanks for this man! Such a huge info
Hi Dan lovely review. I have returned to biking after 30 years, last bike was a cbr1000f, I have bought a cb500x 2016 now and I love it. Plenty quick enough for me, fantastic fuel economy, I added an air hawk seat and I can ride 3 hours with no issues. Ride safe mate
I picked mine up today. I was smiling the entire ride home :) Even though it was really cold, I had warm hands thanks to the heated grips! Such a joy to ride!
Heated grips are awesome, I've got heated grips and vespa hand muffs. I ride in all weather, I can't help smiling when I remember what it's like to have hands that feel like they could brake just from the cold.
I have a 2014 CB500X and swapped out the front sprocket to make 1st gear a bit more usable. Dropped highway RPM a few hundred revs too. Best mod for this motor and transmission hands down.
An excellent, well balanced, pleasantly presented review refreshingly devoid of any annoying hype. Over the period of 2 years I rode 21,000 km on my 2015 model before recently upgrading to my current 2021 model (gorgeous Grand Prix red) three months ago on which I’ve already ridden 5,000 km - it’s so seductive I’m using it more than my car! I find the seat (on both models) extremely comfortable including many rides of 500 km. The fuel consumption is absolutely awesome - currently averaging (over the 5,000 km) 3.1 L/100 km (91 UK MPG) and sometimes, if I’m just shooting the breeze and dawdling through the bush enjoying nature as I did yesterday, it averaged 2.9 L/100 km (97 UK MPG)! This is one beautiful motorcycle - by far the most versatile of the seven I’ve owned in 50 years.
This will be my first bike. I sold on it. I don't need a crotch rocket, nor something that does 100 mph easy. Something light, up right, not over 600cc engine. This thing is perfect!
To be honest this is definitely the bike for me. I've ridden a bunch of bikes in my life and my CBR600 was one of my favourites. Not as fast as my mates in a straight line but around corners it's just smooth. But now this is the bike I want to take touring, riding around town, and some local ride-outs. Easy to repair, not too expensive. Perfect I think!
The 16 tooth front sprocket upgrade is the best upgrade you will EVER do to a motorcycle for such little money, absolutely transforms the bike. I had the seat scalloped out so as to take the slope out of it, again, an unbelievable improvement for such little money, it even makes the bike handle better. All that's left for my 2020 model is to improve the front forks, they are shockingly bad, the rear suspension being ok for me.
Snatchy throttle is something I had on my 2020 gosling (310gs) and became one of the major reasons for selling it. They by the way fixed the bug on 2021 and later versions - I enjoyed it a lot after 2020. The short 1st gear is something you will appreciate in traffic and on the dirt. My 2021 NC750x was killing me with the fact that it can’t go slower that 13 miles/h.
Thanks a lot for the reviews Dan! You contributed a big part for my decision to get this as my first bike since I wanted an allrounder bike. I received my red one yesterday at the dealer. You said that traction control isn’t really needed for this bike but I think it might be, because I slipped on the second corner because of too much power, low temps, my own insecurity and I made a 180° turn… this scratched my exhaust and fortunately I decided to put SW-Motech engine protectors on so it didn’t scratch the hole side of the bike. It still frustrates me pretty much that I scratched it within the first 50 meters but well I will keep that slip experience in mind for the rest of my life. I didn’t experience any slippery behaviour on my driving school CB500F in October. That’s an experience that only life can tell. I’m glad you “approved” this bike since your last review of it. I’m looking forward to become a safe and sovereign driver in the future and have a great time with this bike.
Glad you are okay. One thing to remember is you had brand new tyres, these can be very slippery when new and extra care must be taken. I do still think it's better to learn about throttle control in the long run as that will save you in the future. Glad the bike is not too bad too! Ride safe! Dan
Yep new tire are slippery until they get scuffed up a little bit at a time when cornering new tires. Hope you don't lose confidence in the bike or the dunlops because they work great after they are broke in.
I've just ridden a 2017 version of this bike on Madeira for a week. Was very impressed as I didn't have high expectations of the bike given its power output. Found the seat super comfortable. It's a great all round machine
You mentioned touring, just look at biking travels and Nick! Also my son has done 50,000 miles in 3 years on his...all of Uk on 3 trips and 3 big European tours as far east as most of the eastern european countries and as south as Greece. A lot of GS owners he met were just gobsmacked at how much he'd done on his 'little' bike. He inspired me to buy one now I've retired and I love it...8000 miles in 8 months. I do wonder though what I might be missing out on when I hear how comfortable bigger bikes are with super suspension etc, especially as a 6'2" rider.
I have the 2019 model, yes a little deflector screen makes all the difference with wind buffering, getting around 90mpg if I do not rag it too much, would advise putting a plus one tooth sprocket on the engine to give first gear a bit more range, came down to this bike from a KTM 1090, it was just way too heavy for me to push around.
Take delivery of my 2022 today. After a lifetime of riding everything from scooters to big Adv bikes the Honda just ticked off all the boxes for what I want in a bike going forward. Thanks for the great review.
Great little long term review! If I had to speak up I think I would argue that the short first gear is to accommodate those who have dirtier or stickier aspirations. I've always thought this was a home run and a long needed model for not just the market but for Honda as well. Thanks for your content! Cheers!
I love my 2014 Tiger 800, but I’m mighty tempted to go for one of these, less is more , and they really seem to be excellent value for money plus it’s a Honda!
I think you would miss the easy power. The 800 goes as fast as this using half its power. To use this bike in a sedate way would require riding the speeds a 250cc would normally go.
have a 2014 500x and I can’t believe how much I love it. I’ve got a couple 100+hp bikes but the 500 never feels pokey. Bizarrely capable off-road, did the NEBDR in mine. With the upgrades, for the price, this bike is a smokin buy for anybody
I have big bikes and I have small bikes. I currently consider my all around bike to be my CB300F, but this doesn't check off all the boxes to be a well rounded all around use bike. The CB500X is the best contender for all the boxes to get checked for my needs without spending more money for features I "think" I want. I'm not chasing big power or top end speed and don't really want it for a bike to tour on. The down side of my CB300F is that it lacks the comfort I need and the engine has to work too hard for my needs. When I'm ready, the CB500X will be the bike I get, that or maybe a Versys 650. I'm not quite sure yet, but I'm leaning more towards the Honda.
Solid review Dan. I've had mine now in Queensland for six weeks, done 1200km at 3litres per 100km. You're right first gear is too low but once you get moving there is plenty of power for a bit of fun. I've had way more powerful bikes than this but I'm happy with it. The front suspension is great but the rear shock is a little too soft so I'll wind that in soon. My butt can take a couple of hours in the saddle but I don't think I'll make any change there. I have only one complaint and that is the windscreen. Buffeting at over 80kph is just bad in either of the two positions, I'm 5-10 (178cm). I too don't want a bigger screen so some work to do there. Overall it's a great bike and worthy of consideration. Always enjoy your reviews. Cheers.
Gday Geoff. I’m also in QLD and have a 2022 500X (with around 1200km as well haha). I swapped the 15T front sprocket for a 16T which makes gears 1-5 taller and leaves 6th sort of like an overdrive for cruising on the hwy. I’m returning around 3.4L/100km. I’m also struggling with the buffeting off the windscreen - I’m 6ft 5 and can’t come up with a suitable solution. It is a great bike though, and an enormous step up from my old 2013 500X. Happy riding!
@@rapps101 Cheers. I've put a couple of 20mm spacers at the bottom of the screen. I'll see how that goes. If all else fails I'll cut the screen down and make it a sports screen.
I set up my navi garmin zumo 595 on OEM mount with OEM handguards (really well made, strange shaped ones) and now have no helicopter effect over 80kph. I got 2022 model. Anyway it's is not only cb500x problem, a lot of new bikes have this problem. For instance my older bike like tracer 9gt almost killed me at 180kph because this yamaidiots didn't suit shape of screen and handguards to this bike. So keep calm and mount real motorcycle navi system with oem handguards. Problems will solve instantly. Greetings guys
@@rockyp3917 In January it was $10160 but that was 6 months single seat rego. Full rego was around $10.5 or so. Honda's website says full Qld rego reideaway is now just over $11k.
Good and helpful review. I've got the 500F. Agree that pulling away from lights etc is not fantastic in 1st gear but the power is not lacking in the mid. Keeps stable at higher speeds
I love the engine that's in these bikes. It's far from a Top end powerhouse, but it's so linear and torquey down low that it makes commuting and touring an absolute breeze. There's no waiting to come into the power with this engine, what you initially feel at low rpm is what you get through the rev range.
Got my seat redone by someone, added comfort foam and now I can ride for hours and there is no more pain. I like this bike, it's fun and confy but... I miss the MT07 handling.
Had a 2015. Felt like a highway capable supermoto. Took turns like a champ. Could get the front wheel up in 1st gear with just a quick chop of the throttle. Probably the most comfortable bike I've owned. Negatives? Pretty weak above about 40 mph unless you're wringing it out. The bike is smooth through the rev range, but has a very busy 'feel' at 70+mph (interstate speeds). 55mph roads are good, but def not a highway bike. Over the 10+ years I've been riding this bike ties for 1st place with my GSX-S750 I had. If i could put that engine in the 500x chassis, I'd be in heaven.
I'd disagree about it not being a highway bike.I did 20'000 miles on mine. Lots of motorway at 70mph plus. But we like what we like. Thanks for watching! 👍
I have 2020 model. With a little upgrade this bike can take you any place. So many people talking about fuel consumption. I do 55 mpg. I try to beat the traffic all the time and I ride 65-75 on the highway loaded with 60 lbs of luggage. I can say that I am really happy with this bike. By the way I don’t think that 2022 model is better than mine with all the small upgrades I did.
Haha, well of course you wouldn't want to think a newer model is better than your own bike 😏. But, better brakes and suspension are a great improvement for this year.
@@Englishbikerdan I have RR suspension. It is way better than the stock one. 2022 suspension is slightly better than 2021 but it is not better that RR. Brakes….2 discs is better than 1 disc….but the case here is that those 2 discs are smaller then the 1 from 2021 model. There is small advantage for the new model in this department but it is not much. On top of that 2022 model is 5lbs heavier. Ok, it is not something crazy but it is 1 extra point to my bike 😁
@@MotoPavilion To be honest, RR suspension will really benefit offroad use which isn't something I do much of personally, but definitely a good option. The BPF forks are night and day from the '21 model. The rear shock is okay but I'd definitely look at an aftermarket Nitron with remote preload if I were to buy a '22. Sadly, those extra forks and brakes do add a bit of weight but the bigger master cyclinder helps too. It's great to see Honda make big changes but barely change the asking price. It's all a good start and then you can upgrade other bits as you have. My videos are mostly about stock bikes, and I believe this incarnation of the CB500X is the best yet! End of the day, as long as you enjoy your bike, that's all that matters. Happy riding!
A very attractively styled bike. I had the 2018 model and regretted selling it. I did buy a Versys 650 which is an ideal tourer, but am seriously thinking of downsizing my 5 year old Tiger 800 for this latest CB500X now that old age is beginning to catch me up! The increased seat height, new suspension and brakes are definitely worthwhile improvements over the 2018 model.
Hi Nice sharing. Btw now i is confusing between CB500X and Versys 650. which one should i choose. both got new version and price difference Versys is 10% more than CB500x. i 100% on road. not plan for any of road. just love with touring bike bcoz it seating position.
@@nazalrehlahchannel I now have the 2022 Honda CB500X and the 2019 Versys. Both nice bikes, but the Versys is more of a road bike dressed up as an adventure bike and excellent for the highway. It does feel bigger, and has the option of easy fit panniers...but no main stand, although you can buy an after market brand, but not Kawasaki brand. Both are very good bikes. I like the Honda for days out, but the Kawasaki would be better for longer faster journeys, and has more luggage space with the Kawasaki optional box and panniers. It’s physically bigger too for the taller rider...
nice, i feel good since got answer for owner that got got both bike. btw what about maintenance cost and so on ? it not much difference ? and 1more thing is many said versys gear not smooth as cb got. @@AkaWilf
@@nazalrehlahchannel one good thing with the Versys... the valve clearance is every 26,000 miles, and CB500X is 16,000 miles which is good, but spark plugs at 8,000 miles. Kawasaki is a strong engine because it is used in the Supertwin racing series in the TT races. Gearbox...yes, the Honda is a smoother box than Kawasaki, but I don’t think there are any reliability issues with the Kawasaki, just not as smooth in lower gears and at slower speeds.
A bit late, I know, but thought I'd chome in. As I understand it, the 1st gear is intentionally short for easier low speed/technical/adventure riding. With proper tires, or even something like what rally raid did to previous model years, it's pitched as an introductory adventure bike, and they geared it that way. Now, I'm a noob and don't know this, but it's what my brain logically went to. Excellent content @EnglishBikerDan !!! You've helped me make the decision to give motorcycles a second shot and this is the bike I'll be running. Best of luck on this and your Sprue Therapy channels!
I owned a 2019 , great bike. I regularly got 86 mpg , ( yes i do ride gently) You do NEED a screen add-on or taller screen if like me your 5'11 plus as screen noise is almost unbearable. I could only just stand the noise for a week while I waited for my add on / deflector to arrive.
I enjoyed this video a lot. I had a 2015 one, before changing to an Africa Twin DCT (the 1000cc version) and then on to a VFR800F. I changed from the CB500X because, that iteration, felt properly out of place on the motorway, 70mph was a struggle, even with a different rear sprocket. I know it's not it's no the place where it's most at home, but I'll certainly give it a go again, give your review. Seems more than enough for A and B roads, and I think the exhaust note really sounds a lot better, it was so quiet before (remedied with a Fuel end can).
Last week I rode a touch over 2,000 km on my wonderful 2021 Honda CB 500X. Never before, except on this machine, have I ridden so far on a motorcycle and felt so comfortable in the ‘saddle’. Over that distance (including 4 hours in a storm with gale force side and head winds) she consumed 3.6 L per 100 km (76 UK mpg) which, with her 17.7 L tank, would have carried me for 478 km before needing another drink. At other times, over considerable distances, on both gravel and sealed roads, she has averaged as little as 3.1 L per 100 km. She’s now taken me 20,000 km ….. and not missed a single beat. For what it does, this Swiss Army Knife of motorcycles is awesome in the extreme. 🦘
I've been reading that Honda might be ging to reintroduce the Transalp this year, a 750cc version is rumoured, Honda still build the best real world bikes. subbed.
I want one. Had the 2017 and loved it. Found 1st gear madly short after swapping from a V-Strom 650 (swear to the gods that is one sweet engine and gearing). But so much easier to push around and a really sweet bike to ride. This latest version I would take anywhere pretty uch and the engine note is now quite throaty - and we all love that right? Cool bike. And real value. Great review Dan.
Just to add, I’ve owned a 2020 version from new, 4000km done and haven’t even had to adjust the chain once yet! I bought a throttle tamer to smooth out the low speed throttle response a bit. It’s a very good bike even if I sometimes wish it had a bit more go.
@@nilsjrgenwalle6555 G2 Ergonomics. A bit expensive but helped a lot, I also think the bike had the chain too tight when I picked it up so it’s got better over time, that and the engine arc. bedding in. Good luck
I've got a 2020 and the seat is uncomfortable for me. I would also welcome more braking power. I love the bike tho, been all over on it, enough power, 85mpg Great bike
Like you, I had the first gen cb500x. Was a great bike, the only thing that let it down was the quality of the castings for some of the parts. From a simple drop in the garage it broke the lever, the foot peg, and twisted the handlebars. Was a great all weather commuter bike though.
Fyi…I have a 2021 version and never liked the Dunlop oem tyres. Had a puncture after 2,500 kms and replaced with Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2. Massive improvement. Feels really good now.
The screen is adjustable in brightness and comes out of the box set to medium. The throttle is snatchy because it has alot of play. Honda recommends to set the play to 2mm. It’s cable actuated so it’s relatively straight forward to do.
I know about the screen, my 2019 CB650R had the first iteration which was not bright enough. Glad they changed it. The freeplay was fine, it's just a snatchy throttle due to emissions.
I'm selling up and downsizing soon. I'm looking at one of these to travel from Australia through Thailand to Vietnam where my VN wife and I can do rides to China and beyond. Having owned bikes in Vietnam before, I think this is perfect for what we want to do.
As a 21' Triumph 1200XE owner I'm fortunate to have been able to follow whatever my heart wanted with my bike choices. I had ridden an older 2012 CB500X a long while ago and had fond memories of the ripper little bike it was, so much so I knew this would be a safe bet for a friend of mine when the new version came out . He bought it two days ago brand new unridden (welcome to Australia's dealer market), I took it for a solo ride and threw him on the back as well to try it out - the bike is outstanding and truly makes me wonder if I'd be happier thrashing it around the dirt, fire roads and across Australia over my own premium machine. Like many others I didn't buy the CB500X because I love the look and ownership of my bike but if we had to be honest with ourselves, truly honest, the well rounded nature of this bike is all anyone needs to enjoy riding and go just about anywhere if you're a good enough rider - throwing another 50hp, 30kg, 4 riding modes and twice the cash at a motorcycle does nothing to outclass this little bike in my mind, if anything it can dilute it. A great machine that is all 80% of riders will ever need or want. I'd be amazed if anyone had ever purchased this bike and was in anyway unhappy with owning it.
Nail on the head. My only gripe would be seat comfort but easily rectified I think. Talking of the new 500X being all you need .....watch this space! 😁 Cheers!
For me, this bike is perfect. Got a 2021 last May. Took it out for its first ride of this year today. Bike been sitting on a battery tender since October. Started up first time just as if i rode it yesterday. My go fast stupid speed days are over. Not worth it these days with the penalty if caught. Here, get caught going 40kph over and vehicle impounded for 7 days. Big fines plus an insurance penalty for the next 3 years. Plus i am almost 65 and am more a enjoy the scenery - smell the roses type of rider now. Went thru a faze where i loved the NC750, actually still do. Had a 2014 NC750S. 2016 NC750X and a 2018 NC750X. But wanted to get into exploring forest service roads. The NC was not fun doing that. Tried a CRF250L Rally and while great on the forest roads, not fun on regular roads. So and thus i now have the CB500X. Can do forest roads and good on pavement.
I pick a green one up this Friday 13th May, it will be my third (2016 +19). They are great handling bikes and at 80-90mpg its a no brainer choice if you don't have money to throw away.
had my bike nicked on Sunday 10/07/22 but I am getting a replacement via insurance. This bike is a real improvement on the old one. It steers through the twisties like its on rails, the engine remap makes the thing fly through its rev range and is noticeably more eager when you accelerate. Braking is smooth and progressive all in all a brilliant bike.
Good final review thanks. I feel similar. For longer two-up tours my F900XR TE is better. I prefer twins to triples, so this CB 500 X twin engine is fine for most usage. Relatively cheap to finance and run too (I had a 2019 for a year). Yes as an all round bike it’s great.
Thanks for the comparison of the Tiger 800, I ordered my CB500X yesterday I almost thought I’d rather have a tiger instead but now I know after such a good review I really want my Honda I think it’s the right bike for me, Thanks for the comparison and the review, be safe and enjoy
I had one of these as a loan bike for a weekend… absolutely loved it. As most of my riding is long distance two-up I eventually bought an Africa Twin but if I had the budget I would certainly get a CB500X as a second machine.
They are fun eh!? I have the 2022 AT at the moment and it's definitely made me think which I'd spend my own money on. The fact that a 47bhp machine can make you think, is a testament to how good it is. Thanks!
@@Englishbikerdan I probably should also mention that I’ve since sold the AT and bought an Ultra Limited. My wife has two ruptured vertebra and really struggled to climb on and off the AT pillion, but she has no problem at all on the big Harley and the back seat is Uber comfy. I am now looking for a second bike though and if I can get the money together it’ll either be the CB500X or an NC750.
The CB500F is like a baby Hornet, but similar ergos to the 500X. I agree that 1st is too short, but good for city centres where speed limits are lower anyway. Throttle freeplay was about 6-8mm from factory but adjusting that to 2mm makes it more responsive. I think it's quick enough, some bikes you're up to 50mph so quickly you're breaking speed limits by accident. The dash can seem dim, but turning the back light up makes it significantly more visible in all lighting conditions.
Right . I sold my 67 plate Africa twin in September 2021 simply because I bought it second hand in 2018 from a private seller for a very reasonable price . I poped into Honda because I was board and asked what it was worth. When he offered to buy the bike for what I had paid for it 2 years ago I almost fell over snapping his hand off on the way down . I told him I would be back to buy the new 2022 Cb500x in the new year . So last week I went back in to order a new one and he said they will not be getting any in until June 22 . I can’t be without a bike until then and have only the space for one bike . I looked on eBay and there was a second had 2022 with 49 miles in green for £6249 this is £100 less than new dillema was I want a red one if I get the 2022 . In the same dealer they had a matte black 2020 with 280 miles on it!! It had a center stand upper and lower crash bars , spot lights. Rear top box and pannier racks and a tank baggster and Oxford heated grips for £5800 so I pulled the trigger on it . Total cost of al the extras was around 2 k and they threw in the first 600 mile service for free. If I feel I need the 2022 after riding the 20 plate I reckon I can strip all the goodies of of it trade it in and fit them to the 22 and still be quids in .
Must be nice to have color options. We’re only getting the green here in the US. Mine should be delivered next week. It’s been delayed 3 times already.
I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking the oem seat was not comfortable. I ordered a Corbin seat and its been my favorite bike upgrade thus far on my 2021. Great bike review 👏.
Yeah it's the only thing that griped me on my 2 day tour with the bike. Other than that, all the little niggles I could live with. And in all honesty, I could live with the seat but I have to mention these things. Thanks for watching! Dan
This is a good daily rider as a second bike. Get a used sports bike for your thrills and chills and use this as your daily. 30 km/L what more do you want? That's twice as MT 09 Tracer
How do you guys struggle on a 500cc? People in Southeast Asia can ride 100cc-125cc with a passenger(sometimes two) and they do this everyday with no problem
I've seen almost every CB500X video on UA-cam at this point. I am very interested in the 2022 models... it's gotta be between this and the NC750X for me I think. The bike needs to be able to do 80mph comfortably.
@@kylehurlbrink You don't notice it whatsoever. It's just a number on the tach. Minimal vibrations. All you hear is windnoise anyway. Comfortable for the rider and bike. It had a fairing, so I was fine and the bike never had issues. Consumed zero oil, never made funny noises
@@youridv It is not about the motor being able to sustain 80mph it's about the vibrations that go along with it. Some are reporting the Cb500X gets buzzy even around 70mph...
Great vid Dan. I bought the 2021 MT09 at the back end of the riding season last year so only have 600 miles on it. I’m returning to biking after a 12 year hiatus. The MT is a fantastic bike but a bit mental. I’ve been waiting for a comprehensive review of this bike since I saw it and yours is the best I’ve seen. It kinda got me thinking that I also need one of these in my life to maybe use for additional practice / commuting so I can shelter behind that screen. Your review has at least convinced me to go and have a look and maybe add to the stable. Cheers for the great content.
@@Englishbikerdan Speedo still accurate up to about 40mph, after that there's around a 3% variance. You can, of course, use Speedo Healer (v4) to correct it
Waiting for it to launch in my country!! This bike is a perfect balance for me in my riding condition. Adequate power, decent ground clearance for potholes, Honda's refinement compared to KTMs Single 390 adv.
Very jealous that the snow has melted for you. I bought a new rebel as my first bike back in September (it didn’t show up to the dealer until late November) and now it’s just sitting until the snow melts here in Minnesota.
Great review together with others have encouraged me to put a deposit on one the only problem being our local dealership in Murcia only have one in their showroom which isn't a demo and they don't know when one will be available nor do they know when we are going to get our new bikes..
I've had a 19 model since new and love it. I even prefer it over the much bigger cc adventure bikes i've owned. The power seems to have more than its 47bhp would suggest, although i do have have a Yam XSR9 as well for when i want more power. I wouldn't have bought it if i rode with pillion a lot though, I would want more cc power for that. But riding solo it siuts me fine. Agree with most of your points, especially the seat. I could only handle 45 mins riding on it, so i fitted a seat pad and it improved it immensely, it also had the added bonus of making the seat a bit higher and giving a bit more seat to peg distance. I'm 6'1" so this suited me. I may get the seat modded as a better fix. The front brake is definitely lacking on my 19, so i'm sure the twin discs on the 22 will be noticeably improved. I shall get a test ride on a the 22 to see if its worth me upgrading, but i'm still happy with my 19 atm. Good review, these bikes really need to be rode to see how good they are, they are more than the specs would suggest.
@@trevorthorn5011 Yes i have considered lowered pegs, but if i have the seat modded to make it higher and flatter, it will probably give me enough seat to peg distance.
@@moto-jeff hi thanks for the reply it’s just fine tuning but just knowing which way to go i’m 5 10 with a 30 inch inside leg so I can just about make it to the floor you can’t keep spending money at it you just have to take your time and hopefully you’ve made the right decision 👍
What model seat pad did you get, I may want one but not sure what to buy? I added SW motec pegs to my 2019 and I like them for comfort reasons but the actual distance lowered was imperceptible because of the rubber insert is raised up above the peg... I tried it for a while without the rubber inserts but didn't like the added foot vibes.
@@ljoelmchanley3676 It was a cheap mc seat pad from China on ebay, around £15. I then modified it by cutting a section of foam camping mat and putting it underneath. It works really well for comfort and a bit extra height.
A good review of an excellent bike.....a green machine in more ways than one! (My 2017 model happens to be silver, but you get the point). As you say, these machines do everything pretty well but don't burn too much fuel. Every bike is a compromise but I would buy another one....simple biking pleasure! Cheers.
Hey Dan thanks for the review. I rode a new T7 yesterday and was not expecting that kind of power! Especially coming off my DR. Too much of a good thing. Looks like I need to test ride this little beast..
Thanks Dan. Hmm, can I be arsed changing all the stuff (gel seat, screen, lower pegs, crash bars, hand-guards, centre stand, top-box and pannier racks) over from my 2017. Then fitting heated grips, DID chain, 16 tooth sprocket and having to flog my bike?
Had CB500F (same engine) for me it was underpowered anywhere from 80-90 kmh to bigher speeds. For commuting and some some weekend ride its ok but it gets boring really fast.. When you need to get on the gas from 90-100 kmh nothing really happens... Engine is great, really economical, except jerky throtle which get jumping on your nerves especially in commuting which is his primary job. Dont know what to say, i think maybe better to add some money and buy Tracer 700 and then you have really great allorund bike with enough power for nice funny weekend rides.
Thanks for a very comprehensive review. I used to own an earlier version of the bike and thought it was good but I struggled to cope with the bar vibrations, did you experience any vibration in this newer model? Also, have you noticed any change in riding experience with the increase to a 19 inch front wheel? I now ride a KTM 390 Adventure and feel that the bike has a similar character to the CB500X, unfortunately, there is still still quite a bit of bar vibration, perhaps I am just sensitive to vibration! Thanks.
More like tingles maybe! I owned the previous gen version as well and much prefer the 19” model - more stable at speed, still turns quickly with zero effort.
Had the Earl model, your right regarding vibes, couldn’t sort the buffeting either. The suspension and vibes much much better on the v strom 250, great little bike
I had a cbr500r, it was my first bike and I remember it fondly, plenty of usable real world power(No it wasnt a race bike), good on gas, insurance, comfortable, good on the highway I imagine the 500x is even better, even more comfortable, wind protection, better braking and suspension now as well
Picked my CB500 up a few weeks ago, but not good riding weather, here this year and the days it is I am stuck in the garden so only have 1500 Km on it, For what it is it is a great bike, I traded my KTM 390 Adventure in for it, which I had over 10, 000 km on. As for pick up and go the KTM had a lot more as well as a lot more passing power witch I do miss. For hitting the highway for long distance day rides the Honda I feel is better. For off road the KTM in far better, the Honda dose not even come close. The one thing about the Honda is on very sharp bends you do need to lean it a lot I think more than any other bike I have ever had or ridden, not a bad thing just something you should know if you do not like leaning the bike to extremes to get around fast, slower speeds just fine. One thing I would change is the rear tire to me it is way to wide, for such a light bike, could be part of why it dose not do as good off road. I also find the rear suspension to stiff, even having it lightened up from factory setting. If doing off road that is full of pot holes you better be standing up, first time I hit some pot holes on a dirt road, got tossed in the air, felt like a foot off the seat. My mane problem with the KTM was service, and the light keep coming on and it was back in 4 times, and they shared the computer with another shop so had to keep going back because the computer was at the other shop 60 miles away. The one great thing about the Honda is the miles per tank of gas, I get as good as 2.8 liters per hundred and now averaging 3 liters per hundred witch is a little better than the KTM witch average was 3.2 liters per hundred and with the larger tank on the Honda 17.5 compared to 14 on the KTM I only have to fell up at 500 km instead of 400 km and I should be able to get 560 to 580 km no problem but never like to run to the limit. Bough great bikes but if you do any amount off road and little high speed high way go with the KTM. If mostly road and touring and some easy off road the Honda.
I have seen 205 on the speedo of a 500x took a while to wind out and I thought it was done at 165 but then it got a 2nd life and I stopped before it did I talked to another 500 owner and he reported the same experience

I love this green too. Very nice looking bike.
Im getting mine in 1.5 months time cant wait
I got a singel disc on my older offroad, but when its fully load and carying a extra person. I whis a extra disc velcome🧐😃
1 You will be able to beat almost any car off the line.
2 With a top speed of 100+, won't hold up traffic
3 Unless you want a road rocket, you have a bike for long term ownership.
4 If you want, you can mod it is up.
Nah you'll at least need a liter bike crotch rocket for those things! ;p

For anyone concerned about the stock seat, I found that adding an Airhawk made a big difference for me for longer rides. A more expensive option is an aftermarket seat, such as the Seat Concepts seat.
Fellow airhawk user, i agree. 👍

Hey man! Im planning to get my license next summer! How’s your insurance look like with this bike?
You are absolutely correct. It's not about speed but fun, adventuring and cheap.

Great bike for beginners,
Great fuel economy,
Easy to ride and control.
Ton of after market part
I agree it doesn't need traction control. What would be nice is a TFT display and a button to switch off rear wheel ABS.
Lol ur name is powsey
Take delivery of my 2022 today. After a lifetime of riding everything from scooters to big Adv bikes the Honda just ticked off all the boxes for what I want in a bike going forward. Thanks for the great review.
Great little long term review! If I had to speak up I think I would argue that the short first gear is to accommodate those who have dirtier or stickier aspirations. I've always thought this was a home run and a long needed model for not just the market but for Honda as well. Thanks for your content! Cheers!
Had the 800 crossrunner and swapped it for this and much happier
Hello from the States! This is the first video of yours that I've seen. It was wonderful. A solid, real world, informative review. Thanks!
Thanks Jason!

It might not be all the bike you’d ever want, but it’s all the bike you’d ever need.
Absolutely!
I got it last month and I love it. Much much sexier than NX500.
I love the engine that's in these bikes. It's far from a Top end powerhouse, but it's so linear and torquey down low that it makes commuting and touring an absolute breeze. There's no waiting to come into the power with this engine, what you initially feel at low rpm is what you get through the rev range.
Totally agree

Gearbox...yes, the Honda is a smoother box than Kawasaki, but I don’t think there are any reliability issues with the Kawasaki, just not as smooth in lower gears and at slower speeds.
nice, i really appreciate your reply. it help me a lot for make a choose. @@AkaWilf 😄 thanks
They are fantastic bikes eh! But yeah, that screen isn't the best.
Im looking forward to its future upgrades its allready a great bike
I've been reading that Honda might be ging to reintroduce the Transalp this year, a 750cc version is rumoured, Honda still build the best real world bikes.
subbed.
Hi ,I have bought a comfort ,touring after market seat, from Germany !!! took a few weeks to come as it was custom made .... no issues with comfort !!
Nice, could you share the company name and price? Thanks!
I am interested too?
What kind of throttle tamer did you buy? I have a 500F and I think the throttle is very sensitive at low speeds
@@nilsjrgenwalle6555 G2 Ergonomics. A bit expensive but helped a lot, I also think the bike had the chain too tight when I picked it up so it’s got better over time, that and the engine arc. bedding in. Good luck
@@jakelowe8583 Thanks a lot. I will check it out
I've got a 2020 and the seat is uncomfortable for me.
I would also welcome more braking power.
I love the bike tho, been all over on it, enough power, 85mpg
Great bike
Might get one but tempted by the new transalp. But difference in price is considerable and buys a lot of days off from work to enjoy the smaller bike
Feels really good now.
my cb300r also had Dunlop and the grip was not the greatest, after 12k km i replaced them with sticky (and cheaper) mitas sport force plus tires
Indeed. My comment was mostly meant for the viewers who were wondering. I wish the cb500 range could get a screen more similar to the new nc750.
I have a new 2021 model here in USA and I traded a goldwing in on it.I have been riding for over 50 years I absolutely love this bike
Reserved mine and paid a deposit. Waiting for it to arrive towards the end of April!
I'm selling up and downsizing soon. I'm looking at one of these to travel from Australia through Thailand to Vietnam where my VN wife and I can do rides to China and beyond. Having owned bikes in Vietnam before, I think this is perfect for what we want to do.
Underrated awesome bike.
😁 Cheers!
Seems the CB500X 2022 mod. could be the unicorn bike everyone been looking for. Jack of all trades master of none.
Can I ride on CB500x in the forest ??
Lovely sunny 6 degrees and a nice route.
Thanks for the review, it regularly gets good reviews from many U tubers. Looking forward to your next review.
Finance? It is a dirt cheap bike.
Looks like a fun little machine?. Perfect little commuter, or day tripper. Agree, - would be a lot of fun in the twisties..
Thanks for the comparison of the Tiger 800, I ordered my CB500X yesterday I almost thought I’d rather have a tiger instead but now I know after such a good review I really want my Honda I think it’s the right bike for me, Thanks for the comparison and the review, be safe and enjoy
Welcome, not an exhaustive comparison but I thought I could comment a bit at least. Ride safe! 👍
Honda should introduce a CB500 based silverwing touring bike. It would be my ideal bike
Great review of the CB 500 X I think you summed it up very well as I have a 2020 model A good all rounder cheap to run 👍
The CB500x is interesting !
Enjoy the bike life and keep us updated
Sounds ideal at motorway speeds and for back lane dawdling too. How much more do you need for occasional fun riding?
Excellent post. Looking for my next motorcycle.
Fantastic review. Keep it up!
My CB 650 R is now 50,xxx km
Not a single engine problem
How do you guys struggle on a 500cc? People in Southeast Asia can ride 100cc-125cc with a passenger(sometimes two) and they do this everyday with no problem
I've seen almost every CB500X video on UA-cam at this point. I am very interested in the 2022 models... it's gotta be between this and the NC750X for me I think. The bike needs to be able to do 80mph comfortably.
bro my 23 year old GS500 could do 80 mph comfortably. That's hardly a challenge for modern 500's, let alone 750's.
Comfortable for the bike or the rider? Curious if the higher RPMs on a smaller cc bike would work for a longer ride.

Great review, on the back of this I ended up buying a cb500x and absolutely love it
If you replace the front sprocket with a 16 tooth one it makes 1st gear a lot longer, just right. It was the first thing I did.
Yes indeed, a common mod. Although I think that would render the speedo out of whack?
Why do you need longer 1st gear, for me shorter gears are always better?

Adequate power, decent ground clearance for potholes, Honda's refinement compared to KTMs Single 390 adv.
Gotta say I loved the 390 Adventure. Better on and off road performance out of the crate. But still very KTM, so a bit raw.
Hi I have a 2020 model and considering the SW Moteck foot pegs which can drop 15 mil in height or keep them standard that might help
@@trevorthorn5011 Yes i have considered lowered pegs, but if i have the seat modded to make it higher and flatter, it will probably give me enough seat to peg distance.

What model seat pad did you get, I may want one but not sure what to buy? I added SW motec pegs to my 2019 and I like them for comfort reasons but the actual distance lowered was imperceptible because of the rubber insert is raised up above the peg...
Haha, that's up to you my friend!
Thanks for a good review. Bike is on my radar but sadly the local Devon dealerships have no sign of a demonstrator to try out.
Others have compared this to the vstrom and said the vstrom is better but I guess it depends what you want.
Yeah I can see why. I mention this in my upcoming VStrom 650 review. Coming soon. 😊
Needs a non-A2/LAMS version with cruise control and spoked 21/18 rims.
Thanks.
I too had a 2018 version, vibes are much improved now.
@@Englishbikerdan good vibes now 😁
More like tingles maybe! I owned the previous gen version as well and much prefer the 19” model - more stable at speed, still turns quickly with zero effort.
Had the Earl model, your right regarding vibes, couldn’t sort the buffeting either. The suspension and vibes much much better on the v strom 250, great little bike
I had a cbr500r, it was my first bike and I remember it fondly, plenty of usable real world power(No it wasnt a race bike), good on gas, insurance, comfortable, good on the highway
I imagine the 500x is even better, even more comfortable, wind protection, better braking and suspension now as well
Picked my CB500 up a few weeks ago, but not good riding weather, here this year and the days it is I am stuck in the garden so only have 1500 Km on it, For what it is it is a great bike, I traded my KTM 390 Adventure in for it, which I had over 10, 000 km on.
I have seen 205 on the speedo of a 500x took a while to wind out and I thought it was done at 165 but then it got a 2nd life and I stopped before it did
I talked to another 500 owner and he reported the same experience
