First heard this on the tail end of an acid trip that taught me a lot about myself, in a very true and eye opening way. It wasn't pleasant to learn, but it helped me try to find the motivation to find a way to get out of where I am. I am still trying, but it isn't easy. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it, especially the solo.

  • @txmoney
    @txmoney 6 років тому +501

In order to fully understand the song, you need to listen to the entire album.
The Wall is a concept album. EVERY song is integral to fully understand the story. No single track should be interpreted on its own.
Yes, Pink Floyd is deep. Every album tells a story. In fact, every song blends into the next and was meant to be listened on the original LP. It’s unfortunate that in the digital age, the album songs have a noticeable break between songs. There WERE NEVER any breaks between songs. The best example of an album of continuous music with no breaks is Dark Side of the Moon.
Dark Side of the Moon (one of the greatest albums of all time) turned The Floyd from a “psychedelic” band into something much greater.
BTW...watch the Pulse concert video of Comfortably Numb. It will change your life.

You can always use crossfade, an option that most programs I've used have, so you can get rid of that break between songs. It's not perfect, no, but it's a lot better than the jarring break.

"This guy's a very smart writer.." YES, Roger Waters is!
You definitely need to hear ALL of Pink Floyd's The Wall, you get a better picture of this song that way. Pink Floyd writes albums, not songs. If they were heavier, they would be Tool.
The song is written in two voices - major key for Pink, minor key for the doctor.
Pink overdosed from self-pity, self-loathing, and the news his wife had been cheating on him, had injured himself, and drank and took too much. He barricaded himself in his hotel room, and his staff broke down the door, administered drugs to get him back on stage.
This is not unusual in the music industry, especially back in the 70's when this was written. Doctors were hired by the record company to keep the band up when they needed to be. Colonel Tom Parker, who managed Elvis, was notorious for giving Elvis drugs to get him up or down.
Pink is reminiscing during this, because he has lost contact with reality, becoming a consummate rock star/fascist on stage, while his psyche is trapped behind the wall he's build for himself, screaming to get out.
    Fear builds walls.

      Or Flat (sigh) Earthers.
Here's how you know Roger wrote most of the lyrics and a great big chunk of their music: He talked about growing up without a dad and the war that robbed him of a father a lot. Gilmour still had two parents when he joined Pink Floyd. You can't write about that kind of loss without having gone through it - it wouldn't even occur to you to try.
Plus, Roger's still writing stuff - his best was Amused To Death which is still relevant (unfortunately) almost 30 years later. I didn't care for his new album, mostly because it doesn't seem to have a connective thread, and feels hastily assembled. I liked what he was trying to do, but the way he went about it seems off.
And I don't agree with Israel on it's policies. They're committing genocide on the Palestinians like the Nazis did to them. They're keeping the cycle of violence alive - an eye for an eye makes the world blind. We shouldn't be financing a country (at all!) that wants to commit genocide.
Roger is against violence, against war - no matter who starts it.

Medium doze of LSD and MDMA combined, then a lot of trust in the surroundings to completely let go. That is about what religious experience is at best. But you can't get there without committing to a higher power and that is kind of an obstacle. It is a high, lots of dopamine and serotonin combined with one can only be said to be a mild stroke. With drugs, the physical experience is much stronger.
Not worth it. Spiritual experiences are different and come in all shapes, those you have already had. The difference is the non existence of omnipotent God as a character, as depicted in religious texts. Marveling the miracles of nature in person is spiritual experience and it has a huge therapeutic value.

I'm really late to the party but it's gonna bother me if I don't write this. Don't mind me!
Roger Waters, who basically wrote this album, has stated that Comfortably Numb is not about drugs (as in being numb from them). The Wall is a huge concept album about Pink (a rock star) who begins to build an emotional "wall" (the album name) around him out of all the bad stuff that has happened to him: his father being killed in war, an overprotective mother, bullying teachers, falling relationships etc. He describes them as bricks in the wall (Another Brick in the Wall, Parts 1-3)
At this point in the album Pink has finished the wall inside him and he falls into this catatonic state of not caring about anything and basically just being inside his own thought without any interaction to the world outside. He is sitting in the dressing room and the manager brings a doctor in to give him a fix in order to get him out of this state so he can perform. This changes Pinks personality drastically which brings the album to the "Show" part of the album.
This is my favourite album of all time which has themes about mental illness, the record industry, isolation and facing your fears, among other things. I highly recommend this album to everyone.

I am so tired of people thinking this song is about drugs, drug use. These people have only heard Pink Floyd when they happen to be playing on the radio. You can’t pluck a single off a PF album and try to understand it.

Roger Waters also said that it was about a similarity between when he was sick as a child and the way he felt then with the way he felt after he got sick on tour. In order to perform, the backstage doctor gave him a really strong drug that made him feel the same way as when he was a kid. In a way, it's about drugs, in a way, it's not.

Ummm....... this song was written after a show in Philly in 1977 during the Animals tour. Waters was too sick to go on stage, when they brought in a doctor who gave him something to "get him through the show"....... please.....at least look at the interviews done before commenting.

Sori's reaction at the end is everyones reaction listening to this song. Its such a relaxing and triping song.
I once listened to the whole The Wall album on the beach at night and I took a trip with myself.
And thats the whole point of Pink Floyd.
This sing is about a fever he had once that he allucinated. Some people say it was because of a drup trip but I believe he wouldve said so if it was.
The live video is something else. Its really a show, the psychedelic use of the lights substitute the use of drugs for those who don't use it lol
    Great reaction guys.

When Roger Waters was a child, he spent many hours looking at the sea. He waited in vain for his father to return from the Second World War. His father had died in 1944 in Italy, when Roger was only a few months old.
For that reason the song says: "A distant ship's smoke on the horizon." You are only coming through in. Your lips move but I can not hear what you're saying "
Because Roger thought that every ship on the horizon was the ship his father would come to.

You need to watch the film to understand it. At this point, Pink's demons have peaked and he has trashed his hotel room and got so wasted that he is almost totally unresponsive. He's so wasted he can't make it to the concert. So his manager gets the medic to give him something to get him back on his feet again so that he can do the gig. The whole film is about fame and insecurity, and the way the music industry treats its stars as commodities until they self destruct. The great thing about the film is that there is minimal speaking by the actors and the story is almost totally told with music. Overall The Wall tells the story of a child becoming a man and a famous rock star and how all his life experiences have slowly F**ked him up and to protect himself mentally and emotionally, he has been gradually cutting himself off from the world by building The Wall around himself.

Exactly! Other than a few random hits like "Money" or "Another Brick in the Wall"...Pink Floyd albums were meant to be listened to as a whole. For example, The Dark Side of the Moon begins and ends in the same place and takes you on a sonic journey. To analyze individual songs lyrics without taking the rest of the album in to account is ludicrous. The reviews should have focused on the music, not the lyrics, if they aren't going to listen to the whole album. Because it they did, they would be having a different conversation.

You can't possibly try to understand or analyze the lyrics without knowing the backstory. This song does not come from a traditional album. In fact it comes from a movie soundtrack. For the song to make sense you have to understand the story. Is the semi-autobiographical (Roger Waters), semi-biographical (Syd Barrett) story of a fictitious star's (Pink) journey. Go watch the movie and understand the story first. Only then can the songs make sense.

You guys are a tripp! Just started looking through "music reaction" videos today, so have seen a few different people. But you two dive DEEP - i love it! This is a song i discovered just a few years ago myself, and instantly was enchanted by it. As soon as Sori closed her eyes, I knew she was feeling the magic. Vin - i couldn't tell...until you started talking about it. It's fascinating hearing your take because you see a lot of the same things in the song that i did, but a lot of different things too. You REALLY analyzed the performer/doctor/show component more than i ever have. And the idea that the balloon-hands and the "I can't put my finger on it" line might be related - never occured to me. Thx for that!
I always felt the whole doctor/patient/drug episode was a metaphor. That the whole song was just build-up to the lines "...the child is grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb." And I was glad that y'all did discuss that a little bit.
To me, those lines and the song as a whole are about becoming jaded, disconnected, and lost in the insignificant minutiae of the day-to-day, and losing sight of the incredible gift that life is.
[Interestingly there is a song by Tool ( ua-cam.com/video/OQf2w2n9db4/v-deo.html ) that in a different way has a very similar message - i thought it was interesting that you mentioned them here!].
As the child, he remembered seeing it once - and recognizing the richness and beauty of life and the world (and maybe even his own purpose in it) - when he was a child. But then, "life" happened. And he forgot about that vision when the child grew up and started living in a rat-race stupor. That's what the "doctor" is trying to remedy. To wake him up so he can start living his life again and stop squandering the incredible gift by letting it slip by.
The specific setting of the musician before the show is just a device to illustrate that (that's what i figured, at least.). And the fact that after the remedy, he may feel a little sick - makes perfect sense, because if you have been neglecting what really matters in your life for a long time -- and suddenly come to realize that, that could be sort of a rude awakening. But still that rude awakening back into reality is far better than continuing to let life pass you by simply going about every day comfortably numb.
So not to confuse things even more, but that's why i ultimately believe that Pink Floyd (the singers) are the actual doctors, the song is the medicine, and we (the listeners) are the patients needing to be awakened (reminded to think back to the way we looked at life, people, the world, and ourselves when we were children).
Thanks so much for doing this review! I feel like it gave me an excuse to pay a long over-due visit to an old friend. I will have to check out more of your postings!

Sori nailed it on this - it's about the way the music industry pushed drugs at musicians to keep them performing, irrespective of the long term outcome.
When she closed her eyes to submerge herself in the music, I could see it. She felt the emotion and the brilliance.
From the time Pink Floyd lost founder member Syd Barrett to madness brought on through drug abuse and the pressure imposed by the relentless schedule imposed by constant touring and recording, madness and industry pressure was a recurring theme in Pink Floyd's music.
They never really gave up that theme, or finished mourning the loss of their friend, and blaming themselves, in part, for being a part of that pressure and eventually, giving in to the pressure to go and play without Syd. David Gilmour in particular, who took Syd's place as lead singer and guitarist, having been introduced BY Syd to the band, felt it particularly hard. Syd and David both studied at the same college I attended, and probably first played together there.
You should listen to "Dark Side of The Moon" as a whole album (as you should really listen to most of Pink Floyd's music).
Listening to a Pink Floyd album is a commitment - you set up with any drinks or snacks you may need, turn off the phone, settle down to listen, and keep listening, submerging yourself in the music, until the album has finished. Then you will REALLY appreciate the genius of Pink Floyd.
Or maybe even better, get a copy of the DVD "Pulse", which has a live recording of the whole album as well as considerable additional material.
And remember how long ago that stuff was first recorded - they really were breaking new ground in both music and live shows.
It was Pink Floyd who were asked by the BBC to provide live improvised background music to their live coverage of the first moon landing, just to give a time reference.

I have been with pink Floyd since 1968. I have seen them 3 times and their music is absolutely genius. You must sit down and watch "PULSE" a live concert from 1994. It is the best live concert ever recorded. By the way, you two do a great job. Keep it going!!!

I was at that gig in Earl's Court. The gig got pulled at the very beginning as the intro to SOYCD was just starting as there had been a partial seat collapse ( thankfully no deaths and only a few injuries). But we all came back a week or two later.
What a gig!! Best I've ever been to. The Freddie Mercury Tribute gig at Wembley in 1992 came close, but two distinctly different occasions so unrealistic to compare musically and setting- wise.
This was epic and Floyd live with Gilmour's virtuoso, feel and improvisation takes the album versions to another epic level if that was even possible to imagine beforehand!!).
I'll never, ever forget it, what an experience!

"Comfortably numb" is a term describing an emotional and psychological state of mind, which happens when you no longer want to suffer, it is a stage before suicide... to understand you should watch the movie (few times).
Usually people who understand Pink Floyd, listen to the entire record from the first to the last note... Personally if it's Pink Floyd, then tracks do not exist for me (I listen to the whole shit).

I've been a die-hard PF fan since i was a kid in the late 70's. Without spoilers, The Wall is a theatrical rock opera about a fictional character named Pink, who carries the combined, life-altering experiences of the band members (youth of the psychedelic era) including one influential, founding member (Syd Barrett) who became strung out on drugs, lost interest and walked away when the group was headed to commercial fame. Hence, the song Comfortably Numb and the lyric ".. caught a fleeting glimpse...the child has grown the dream is gone..."
The Wall is an amazing display of talent, skill and ability of true artists, and seeing it live is absolutely spellbinding. The two cinematic versions of The Wall (1982 and 2014) puts vision to the music. I recommend watching them both. Maybe twice to absorb the full complexity of it.
I enjoyed your review. It took me back to my youth when this masterpiece was dropped on the public with no explanation, leaving us all in a euphoric, yet rebellious, confused daze, rising against conformity, with thousands of fans inputting their half-baked, theories. Ha! Great times.

Ok, Sori is so dead on with the feel for this song! I was watching Sori and just waiting just as a hypnotist would for her to finally succumb and close her eyes. When she did, it was over and the journey began. Some may not like this but I tell peeps all the time, that Tool is the Pink Floyd of this generation, for me anyway! Both Pink Floyd and Tool have a way through their compositions to take you on a journey. Growing up listening to Pink Floyd albums made loving Tool easy when they came out in the 90s. Great review once again! Now go do the entire Wall album, its soooo good!

Tool uses a lot more discordance and unusual time signatures in their music, but I get that many people feel that Tool is like a heavy metal Pink Floyd.

420since1974 very true though I will say Dark Side of the moon used some unusual time signatures especially for that time frame in music.
