One thing to keep in mind about the term "Under the sun" is that most people in the past had to work outside. Having a lighter complexion was a sign of having a good life. Having dark skin was a sign that you were a commoner/working class/farmer. So it can be also taken as a division of social class (e.g. "You live most your life under the sun" would be putting someone down).

The funny thing is that its flipped now. If you have a tan its a sign of having free time spend outdoors. Those of us who work indoors rarely see the sun :P (that's why you have lots of people with vitamin D deficiency).

OK about halfway in: You guys are still taking the album a tad TOO literally ( in that it's the story of one person, it's not) but basically this song addresses the concerns of money and greed in a very tongue in cheek fashion.
It's about how we all tend to base our self worth and value on the things we own and how much money we have; how sure, we want charity for others but hey, "keep your hands off MY stack."
The last line is the most telling: "Money, so they say, is the root of all evil today. BUT, if you ask for a rise ( you want more income from your boss, or a tax cut from your government) it's no surprise they're giving none away ( nope, sorry, the rich are keeping your money, no raise for you.)"

    • @DJMaul1031
      @DJMaul1031 5 років тому +2

    • @michaelsuder3217
      @michaelsuder3217 5 років тому +8

Tommy Mac they analyze things very well however you are right. Bands like Pink Floyd can’t be analyzed the same as someone like Metallica. A lot of metaphors and for lack of a better word(s) - artistic satire

    • @TheCooke2001
      @TheCooke2001 5 років тому

First off, the rich isn't keeping YOUR money. That is their money. If you're worth more then 9 out of 10 times you'll get a raise. If you think you're worth more and you're not getting it you are free to go elsewhere. There's no one stopping you.

  • @Rickhorse1

As an old guy, I DO enjoy your reactions/reviews of Pink Floyd. However, I do have one criticism. You seem to be rating/reviewing totally based on lyrics. Don't get me wrong - lyrics ARE important in good music, but IMO great music is mostly determined by the music, not the the lyrics. How anyone can rate "Money" without mentioning the creativity of the music is beyond me.

The whole of the DSOTM is about the cycle of life and the phases we each pass through. Money represents the materialistic part of our lives where we work, earn and consume, but it is done with a certain irony suggesting that there is much more to life than the accumulation of wealth.

Guys, try to catch either David or Roger in concert if they tour one more time, they still do the songs from this album and the others. Remember they are now in their 70s! Peace to you both man!

Great reaction as always Y’alls! ... there’s also an inherent British sarcasm to this song that David Gilmour’s voice and the music accentuates (with the sax and the guitar riffs being very “ostentatious” as well) ... remember that song “Jambi” by Tool? Floyd’s “Money” is kinda the ‘OG’ version of that... being really young, making a TON of cash, and what that can do to a person.... this is also the juxtaposition between British life in the 70’s (still recuperating from two world wars) vs American style capitalism and crass glitz at the time.

Britain & the rest of the Europe isn´t socialist & the countries that were, haven´t been since the 80´s. Having universal health care, paying people a decent wage, taking care of the weakest & having those who earn the most pay a little more in taxes (as they do in most of Europe) isn´t socialist, is simply the right thing to do if you want people to feel like they live in a fair society.

    Lyrics:
Us (us, us, us, us) and them (them, them, them, them)
And after all we're only ordinary men
    Me
    And you (you, you, you)
    God only knows
It's not what we would choose (choose, choose) to do (to do, to do)
Forward he cried from the rear
    And the front rank died
    And the general sat
And the lines on the map
    Moved from side to side
    Black (black, black, black)
    And blue (blue, blue)
And who knows which is which and who is who
    Up (up, up, up, up)
And down (down, down, down, down)
And in the end it's only round 'n round (round, round, round)
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
    The poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
    There's room for you inside
"I mean, they're not gonna kill ya
So if you give 'em a quick short, sharp, shock
They won't do it again. Dig it?
I mean he get off lightly, 'cause I would've given him a thrashing
I only hit him once! It was only a difference of opinion, but really
I mean good manners don't cost nothing do they, eh?"
    Down (down, down, down, down)
And out (out, out, out, out)
It can't be helped that there's a lot of it about
    With (with, with, with), without
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?
    Out of the way
    It's a busy day
I've got things on my mind
For the want of the price
    Of tea and a slice
    The old man died
    E

Sori: "We need to not love money more than we love people." _ NAILED IT. And that is pretty much the message of the song although as I said, it's done in a tongue in cheek way.

What's funny is that they started commenting about the song then they went into their own lives and then they talked about the state of the country's economy and how it relates to them and there own experiences. I think Floyd's music is great for making people talk and reflect on the state of their lives and the condition of the world and I think that is what great art is all about

The 1st Pink Floyd song my Dad showed me. At the time thought it sounded goofy dumb and outdated and know I love this masterpiece and its message. The world is all about Money. Even if it means your life.

I don't think the album is entirely a thematic progression. I really think Money is just a little excursion. A side thought. Breath, On the Run, Time & Great Gig are definitely a sequence. Everything else is just different ideas that segue into each other.
Until we get to Brain Damage & Eclipse, which re-connect to back to the thematic arc & bring it full circle.

Key part to thinking about the song is that rich music artists and actors during that period actively lived outside the country to avoid paying British taxes.
As far as the 'working hard' part, It doesn't cover two salient points of a late stage capitalist society: The children of the rich, who get it handed to them for literally nothing more than genetics, and people who make their money by actively hurting society, such as when the banks were pushing subprime mortgages on people to pump their numbers and then demanding the govenrment bail them out when it crashed. Or a CEO who 'creates value' for his company by putting people out of work. Or a investment guy who jumps the price of lifesaving drugs to cover the big loan he got to buy the drug company. I won't even mention the number of people who have to work two or more jobs or work well past retirement age to keep afloat because said CEO can't see a way to pay the workers who make the value.

React to the album 666 by Aphrodites Child. Despite what you might think based on the title, it's actually a proggy, psychedelic concept album, depicting the events of the biblical book of Revelation (the album is subtitled The Apocalypse of John 13/18). With you being so religious and all, Id be interested in seeing your thoughts on it. Like if you guys wanna see it happen

This is a commentary on capitalism. Dave Gilmore sold his house and built a housing estate for the homeless. He also recently sold some of his guitars for over 20 million pounds which he donated to charity.
Roger has raised awareness of inequality and put out a stack of anti war stuff for years

Vin, Sory, I really like your interpretations of the thematics of this wonderful album and your attempt to imagine a sort of plot in it. I think there we have a sort of overinterpretation because Dark Side of The Moon is a concept album, not a rock opera, and thus it lacks a real plot in a cinematographic sense. In fact, the songs of Dark Side shows a collection of things and events that drives the men crazy: the frenzy of the modern world, the money, the urge for success, the aging, the incommunicability, the war, the fear of death, the religions and so on. But, I repeat, I really like your interpretation. Anyway, Money in particular has very, very sarcastic lyrics (the sarcasm reach the zenith in the video, where you see, besides other images of luxury and decadence, a factory where the Dark Side vinyls are printed!), and should not be taken too literally.

What do you guys think about the parable Jesus tells about the workers hired at different times of the day getting the same pay? I ask because I think it can be one of the more uncomfortable parables for us to hear. Not to mention the passage about it is easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle than a rock man to heaven.

    • @lennym1273

By "you guys" is that an open invention to any one? If so this is how I see the first one I take as a lesson to not too worry what everyone else is getting, he made a deal with each man, the deal he made with you was for a full days work for X amount and to the other man he made a deal for the rest of the day X amount as well , you have your deal he has his in other words none of your business, but I think it teaches you to do your best at all times and to always fulfill your obligations ( you made the deal you were happy with it now do as you said you would).
As for the eye of the needle I see it as i learned, in those times city's were walled in and they had two gates a big gate in the front (it was always locked at night for safety reasons) but in the back they had a small gate (called the needle gate) that could only fit one man at a time or one camel unloaded, So if a man did some stealing or shady deals that he did not want everyone else to know about he would have to wait for night time and use the needle gate and when he came with his camel fully loaded he would have to unload the goods off of the camel and carry his goods, one item at a time then get his camel threw the gate and reload his ill gotten goods on his camel to finish his day or night. So to me he is saying a rich man needs to unload his ill gotten wealth before he can enter the kingdom of heaven...
