That night when my monitor shut off on me, I could still hear the video playing so I knew instantly it wasnt my pc. I tried replugging power supply and basically simply fixes and of course nothing. Always look forward to another installment in Fix or Flop. And sometimes like you, I'm surprised. Like this one? I suspected the modular SATA cable was from a different supply and maybe the pinouts were wrong (for why it wouldn't power on but seemed to be okay without the SATA cable connected to the device). But when the motherboard wouldn't post (and obviously as it turned out the SATA device was OK) I went "nope!" lol - always the same and always different (that's what makes it fresh). Another great video Greg. So are we looking at a potential spike in power supply while mining? Could that have then damaged something on the motherboard? Probably goes to show, use higher end power supplies if leaving computer on for long periods of time.
yeah I have the same PSU Greg replaced it with (Corsair RM850X) I've had it for probably 5yrs and I use my pc for some pretty intense video editing and upscaling. I often leave my pc on all day and all night sometimes if i'm upscaling an especially long video with my rtx 2070 Super running overclocked at 99% the whole time and my psu takes it like a champ. i am waiting for the day my gpu craps out on me though, that's gonna be a sad day, and hopefully I have some money to buy a new one lol.
Love the show dude, it's helped we go through the steps and trouble shoot friends and families problems. Just so ya know though I mine...and if you're using hive os you're not just a casual miner. That takes a lot more time to set up then just a one card rig on your personal pc
Freaking epic battle here Greg! I'm a medic and nothing frustrates me more than folk concealing details when you're trying to sort them out. Couldn't care less whether you take drugs or not, but it makes you easier to diagnose and treat if you're up front with it! Thanks for for the kick-ass content as always.
I had this same problem on a partially modular PSU too and it ended up being one of the modular cables. The cable fit the socket perfect on the PSU but, when looking at the end of the plug, the active pinout was different (meaning the plug was the same but holes had a different active wire layout), causing the power issue. I never knew that modular PSU pinouts are different from brand/model to another.
Hmm... I think I have a good idea what happens. I have issue with SSD lockup, which I believe it's the case. There's nothing wrong with all the system, and the SSD is not faulty at all. The reason behind this is when the SSD controller reads the journal and somehow comes up with an error. The controller then hanged because it didn't know what to do and kept sending a busy signal to your motherboard, which make it couldn't post. I don't know if this case is similar to yours but that's my experience. I just power off the system, do a deep cleaning (removing every component, dusting and whatever) then reassemble the PC and the PC boots up. Of course, I sent back the system to its owner but the owner return back to me cited the same problem after a few weeks, and he did mention that his system sometimes doesn't want to post at all. I'll change the SSD if I were you, because that's a tell-tale sign that the controller of the SSD might have degraded and became unstable.
The same thing was happening to a system I built recently. The sata cable I had the ssd powered with was actually from a different psu entirely so when I powered the system on it lit up for literally a split second and then shut off. It took me a while to figure out the problem. I replaced the sata cable with the correct one for the psu. the system powered on and booted fine but I was never able to get the system to recognize the ssd afterward. So got a replacement and all is well. I’m still not sure if the original ssd is cooked or not but it was strange seeing the sata cable cause the whole system to short out like that. Great videos as always Greg!
I'm wondering if there was actually a short in one or more of the PSU cables, just that when you repositioned the cable(s) to use the tester, the short was no longer happening. I've had this before (in a laptop charging cable that melted itself) :D
@@GregSalazar Your videos helped me troubleshoot my new PC build. My new PC would immediately shut off when trying to install windows. I could boot to Linux just fine. Then it stopped posting. Your videos helped me to determine that the motherboard was faulty. Everything worked fine with a new motherboard. Thanks for your help. Please keep those videos coming.
The problem is probably the SATA cable itself. It might have been a found cable that was from another power supply, with a different wiring to the pins. Seen that damage components too, which may have caused the failure or other components
I use your trouble shooting checklist (that I've sort of deduced from watching tons of your videos) on my own computers. Awesome video idea would be an official rundown of the things you check when trying to figure out what's causing issues in a PC. Keep making great videos and thank you for all the help.
Very easily could be that they were mining which puts quite a load on the power supply and that caused power supply failure which in turn caused motherboard failure, or the motherboard failed and took out the power supply, though I have never seen that happen.
i have a feeling this person took you. He mined on it fried the PSU and it took some parts with it and he submitted it knowing he would get new parts. I more then likely knew that mining fried his rig and knew what was wrong.
Mining’s kind of a taboo topic and I assumed that’s why the owner didn’t want to mention it. Regardless, kudos to you Greg for following through on all the troubleshooting, my first reaction was an incompatible SATA cable because I’ve found ewaste power supplies (decent ones) with the wrong sata cable that would “click” when plugged into a SSD, but this certainly was a rollercoaster
I wonder if the Southbridge on the motherboard went out because I've had the problem where no display but it would seem like it posted but no video and it kind if seems like that was the problem but I don't completely know
I just recently found these videos and your channel. I've learned so much, but I have to say on this one "bro, you got played". It sucks to see it happen to good people like yourself.
Antec EA 750 pro G are seasonic Focus rebranded, with CPU EPS 8 pin/ motherboard 24 pin that are hard wired to save costs. They are generally ok units, aside issues like that unfortunately..
I love what you do, Greg. But i cant help but feel some type of way about this users PC. I have nothing against mining. But seeing as this system was used to mine which means it was drawing quite a bit of power daily. The user not disclosing that kind of crucial information is very disengenuous. And you had to replace two components? Maybe three if you let them have the cpu cooler. This just seems really slimey. Youre a better man than me. Thats why you are awesome!
The explanation as to why the power supply wasn't working was simple I was literally screaming lol. The power supply was fine until it was put under a small load which was the issue.
So I'm wondering if during the mining session, that there was a overvoltage from the SSD to the PSU and anytime that the SSD would try to do anything it would pull more voltage causing the PSU to trip. Potentially that's why it was fine sending power through to the tester? Just a theory.
I like your vids. I am only a recent viewer and have no problem with my pc at all but if i do i like to tinker like you do maybe that is why i enjoy your videos that much. Keep going nice work.
Greg you should try seeing if that Antec PSU will boot another system, I think the fact it was connected by the SATA cable to the broken motherboard and was plugged into the SSD while trying to test was screwing up the tester.
7:10 How did that CPU not instantly overheat? I've only ever built two systems but one of my vivid memories from my first build was underestimating how important a CPU cooler was. I wanted to test the system before committing to the cooler but when I hit the power button the PC shut off almost immediately. I went to touch the CPU and it basically burned me from how hot it was in that split second of being on. I figure it had overheated which caused the immediate shutdown. That was on the Bulldozer architecture from AMD, the FX-8350 IIRC. Was that CPU just getting hotter than it should've in that moment? I went on to use that CPU for close to 10 years, just upgrading it last summer.
Just wondering if your psu tester actually "loads" the power rails when it measures the voltages? This might explain why the psu appeared to fail with the ssd connected. It could be the protections circuits in the psu were not working properly and when any current is drawn the faulty circuitry shuts down the psu. I would have connected a different external drive to eliminate a problem with the ssd.

Love your in depth explanations, helps those of us with virtually no concept of the inner working have a general idea of how things work and potential solutions we dare not try ourselves because of that lack of comprehension. Was actually disappointed to hear you have set numbers of episodes each year/season as have become a huge fan. Thanks.
"Dear Greg, I promise that I didn't run my pc to death for ( add x amount of excessive hours ) while i was away from it."
Sipping my morning coffee while watching the best PC channel in YT. Keep up the good work always Greg! 👌🍵
I'm just going to toss this video a like and make a comment just to help Greg out a bit with the UA-cam algorithm. You really went up and beyond for this rig and I feel like this is the least I can do to help compensate you for your time and effort that it took to fix this rig. Salute!
very good decision to rename/name every fix or flop video aftr the PCs problem, does only good in helping others with similar issues
Great video Greg. Appreciate your take on honesty. Keep up the good work.
Brother you have done a very very good work by fixing PC free of cost. You are a great man with an excellent attitude
Ur series is so great to watch on the side while working or relaxing. I have a big passion for IT since small and work in IT too, and many times have I encountered the issues you deal with in these series. I must say you do a great job of explaining the way you are approaching's and thinking about the troubleshooting ! Awesome job keep it up !
Michigan here. Enjoyed seeing a fix or flop with multiple issues... reminded me of my first few builds from many years ago.
@@NonLegitNation2 I put. Corsair 750 in my nephews first build. Told him the last thing he is gonna need to worry about is the PSU. 😃
Thanks, Greg. I always find these episodes to be educational, and I truly appreciate you sharing with us.
I had this same problem on a partially modular PSU too and it ended up being one of the modular cables. The cable fit the socket perfect on the PSU but, when looking at the end of the plug, the active pinout was different (meaning the plug was the same but holes had a different active wire layout), causing the power issue. I never knew that modular PSU pinouts are different from brand/model to another.
love this guy's calmness.
These are always the way my troubles go. It's never easy.
Best series out here on YT! Keep up the great work Greg!
Hi Greg
im glad you had that problem with the motherboard. And the Power Supply unit. then we can watch for that in the future.
Well done Greg and cutie pie kid of yours part melted my heart. Happy Weekend bro.
I'm wondering if there was actually a short in one or more of the PSU cables, just that when you repositioned the cable(s) to use the tester, the short was no longer happening.
I've had this before (in a laptop charging cable that melted itself) :D
You deserve a million subs you will get there your Channel is the best I watch every video
ah yes, finally a new episode of fix or flop
Thanks for the new episode. Love them!
Thanks for watching!
Another learning today, thanks greg!
Nice video, i had the same problem in the past, passmark actually did a great job the problem manifests only when the power supply is under load.
THIS IS SEMPITERNAL!!! Such as good record!
I always get notifications for you videos and enjoy the troubleshooting portions the best. Thanks Greg 👍
The problem is probably the SATA cable itself. It might have been a found cable that was from another power supply, with a different wiring to the pins. Seen that damage components too, which may have caused the failure or other components
Love the work you doing, great troubleshooting. As you said little bit of honesty would save you a bit of time.
Waiting for next episodes :D
I love me some Fix or Flop with my morning coffee on a weekend!
I like your fix or flop videos greg
I use your trouble shooting checklist (that I've sort of deduced from watching tons of your videos) on my own computers. Awesome video idea would be an official rundown of the things you check when trying to figure out what's causing issues in a PC. Keep making great videos and thank you for all the help.
Very easily could be that they were mining which puts quite a load on the power supply and that caused power supply failure which in turn caused motherboard failure, or the motherboard failed and took out the power supply, though I have never seen that happen.
Great video, excellent series!
i have a feeling this person took you. He mined on it fried the PSU and it took some parts with it and he submitted it knowing he would get new parts. I more then likely knew that mining fried his rig and knew what was wrong.
oh yesssss what a legend you are Best series on UA-cam by far keep it up greg
Mining’s kind of a taboo topic and I assumed that’s why the owner didn’t want to mention it. Regardless, kudos to you Greg for following through on all the troubleshooting, my first reaction was an incompatible SATA cable because I’ve found ewaste power supplies (decent ones) with the wrong sata cable that would “click” when plugged into a SSD, but this certainly was a rollercoaster
I wonder if the Southbridge on the motherboard went out because I've had the problem where no display but it would seem like it posted but no video and it kind if seems like that was the problem but I don't completely know
I've heard that some unscrupulous miners have created a worm that forces others' machines to mine for them. Perhaps that's what happened here?
Totally a great PSU replacement. My friend bought the same unit recently and I told him that it's gonna last for years to come.
I just recently found these videos and your channel. I've learned so much, but I have to say on this one "bro, you got played". It sucks to see it happen to good people like yourself.
Thank you for this video. Made my Friday!
Thanks for the series, it's really nice and have been learning a lot with it!!!!
I have had issue at least twice , replacing ssd worked for me
Maybe it's just me, but everytime I have had a power supply go out, it takes another compoent with it. Keep up the good work.
Love these videos Greg don’t ever end this series. Seriously good content.
Great series Greg … really enjoy going through these videos and trying to diagnose with you … thanks for keeping this series going
No power because other PC components are fried from Mining 🤣
i like this channel teaching troubleshooting and fixing issues I always watching every episodes
surprise co-host! adorable
Good on you Greg, I probably would of taken my parts back and given him his mining pc and let him deal with it
Great job. You're a Wonderful person. Keep up with the great work.
Best part about a Friday night is watching a fix or flop video
I love that there's an adorable tiny elf that brings you "healthy num nums." It's easy to get hyperfocused on troubleshooting and forget to eat!
Awesome vid Greg. Very good trouble shooting. Must have been frustrating 😃
Hey Greg, as always great video. I appreciate what you do. You provide a lot of great information for the community.
This series is a black hole that I get sucked into for hours on end 😂😅
Keep going buddy 😊😊
Sending you and your family my love all the way from Egypt 💘
