Thanks for another great formulation! I would like to flavor this with fruit flavors. Could you tell me how many grams of flavor oil to use and also it seems most are not sweetened so I will need to add that as well. How much would you put of each? Thanks 🙂

Hii Marie I made a batch yesturday and it turned out amazing. Thank you for the knowledge and guidance. The only problem I faced was that I used soy lecithin which was dark brown in colour (and was extremely sticky) even after melting all the ingredients the lecithin didn't mix up well. I also used a batter blender but it just didn't incorporate. Do let me know how to fix it.😊

Oh my goodness, I feel you! This is SO easy to do, ha. One of the easiest places to pare down is carrier oils-you generally don't need as many as you think you do. The websites all rhapsodize about how miraculous different carrier oils are, but in many projects you'd be hard pressed to distinguish between safflower oil and canola oil-there's no need to buy both!

Hi Marie, thanks for all your helpful content. I’ve struggled with this balm as mine felt too waxy (maybe what you describe as grabby but in my tropical climate it’s unpleasant to apply). Shall I use candelilla only (no beeswax) or more candelilla and less beeswax? Shall I swap out castor oil for a lighter oil (like caprylic capric triglyceride)? Any suggestions? I would like it to glide on better (feel slippy) and still be very emollient and moisture retaining for the lips. Thank you.

So, is it possible to burn/caramelize the lethicin , because I’m pretty sure that’s what happened to mine tonight! It was a hard, brown lump at the bottom of my beaker, and no matter how much I stirred it, it never dissolved. I took the beaker out of the water bath and let it cool a bit and then after taking out the burnt lump, stirred 2.5g back in. It is still not really incorporating. I’ve used this sunflower lecithin in other lip balm recipes with no issues. Any ideas?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  5 років тому

Hmm. I assume you're using a water bath? Is your lecithin liquid or solid? It definitely does degrade with extended exposure to high heat (learn more here: www.researchgate.net/profile/Cassio_Prinholato_Da_Silva/post/What_is_the_degradation_temperature_of_phosphatidyl_choline_lecithin/attachment/59d61f8e79197b807797dfec/AS%3A285223494406144%401445013988397/download/art%253A10.1007%252FBF02540536.pdf), but if you were using a water bath there's no way you could've got up to the temperatures mentioned in that study.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

I don't recommend adding rose petals-they'll be scratchy to the skin.
Every essential oil has a different recommended usage rate; generally speaking 1-2% is ok, but this can vary greatly.

Hey! You'll find the answer to your question + lots of formula-specific and more general information about substitutions and alternative ingredients in both the partner blog post for this formulation (linked in the description box below) and the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/). I'd recommend starting off with the big "Substitutions" list at the end of the partner blog post, but please also take the time to read through the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia posts for each ingredient as well. There is a TON of information in the encyclopedia to help you understand what an ingredient is, why it's used, the job it's performing in any given formulation, and what ingredient(s) you might be able to use instead.
If, after looking through all of those resources, you still can't assemble a collection of ingredients that will allow you to make some version of the formulation, then I'm afraid that formulation may not be for you. It's an unfortunate reality that not all ingredients are available in all parts of the world. I have shared over 1200 formulations on Humblebee & Me since launching in 2011, so I would recommend looking for something similar that uses ingredients you can get. Please use the main menu on the website (www.humblebeeandme.com/) or search for more general terms (for example, "lip balm" rather than "sticky coconut lip balm") at www.humblebeeandme.com/search/. Good luck & happy making!

You might prefer to start your lip balm journey with a traditional vegan version. Here is a search of her numerous blog vegan lip balm recipes: www.humblebeeandme.com/?s=Vegan+lip+balm&et_pb_searchform_submit=et_search_proccess&et_pb_include_posts=yes&et_pb_include_pages=yes

I agree with Jo-I'd recommend a simpler recipe for your first ever lip balm, especially since you don't have a bunch of the ingredients. This one is also nice: www.humblebeeandme.com/chamomile-citrus-vegan-lip-balm/!

What’s the logic to use beeswax and candellia in the same recipe? Both of them have the same function. Normally, on recipes the canelila wax relocates the beeswax for the vegan community.

This is from the blog post: Beeswax brings its wonderful tacky hardening to the balm, while candelilla brings a bit of hard, glossy hardness.

Somebody (maybe you?) asked this exact question on the blog and it has been answered-both in the text of the blog, and the comment itself.

Hi how long is your course and do you use chemicals in any of your recipes or are they 100% natural ?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

The course is 6 recipes, and takes about 2 months to get through. Everything is natural, but that doesn't mean chemical free :) www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/is-x-ingredient-a-chemical/

my best guess (total shot in the dark) is that it sounds like you arent pouring it into containers while it is still hot. otherwise, there are a lot of reasons why it didnt work; need more info.
