- In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Don’t Look Back by the band Boston. This was the title track off their second album and is an amazing composition that clocks in at just under 6 minutes. Tom Scholz takes us on a musical journey with a lot of twists and turns as well as interesting and beautiful guitar parrts. I break down all the parts of this song including some suggestions and tips for the harmony guitar parts. I also provide incite on performance tips and the music theory behind this composition. This was always one of my favorites. Bought the album right when it came out. I was 13 years old!
Tom was brilliant... but Barry's expressive and exciting leads are underappreciated. Thanks for giving him proper credit!!
The chorus lead is so Majestic! Then the harmony comes in. I always loved that about this song.
I’ve waited so long for someone to do a breakdown of this song!😢 The moment I first heard this song, I was sold. Killer song that’s over 46 years old😮 and finally a killer guitar lesson on the song.🎶 Like the ol’ saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait”😎 Thank You Marty. Your a gift from God 🎸
You're very welcome man!! 😎🎸
I remember hearing this for the first time when it came out…me and all my buddies thought these guys were from outer space…we had never heard anything like it before…it was fantastic…great lesson Marty
Glad you liked it man! All these years later, Boston are still amazing! 😎🎸
I love the story behind the making of Boston, starting in a basement with Tom Scholz. There is a documentary of his story out in a UA-cam video. There is also a video where he goes back and visits the home where it all started, which is now owned by someone else. I liked the Boston guitar so much, I bought the SR&D Tom Scholz X100 Rockman back in the early 80’s, that I still own today and it still sounds great. Tom’s a genius. Great video Marty. 🤘🏼🎸👍
Yes that's such a great UA-cam documentary. I watch it over from time to time! 😀
Great lesson, Marty! Again, you absolutely nailed the tone. And thanks for crediting Barry; he doesn't always get enough credit for those searing leads. Rock On!!! 🎸🤟
You're welcome! Barry really was a fabulous player!
Yes !!! Arguably my favorite Boston song.. Good look Marty !
Thanks man! 🙏🎸
My favorite is "A man i'll never be", brings tears to my eyes.
Yeah man ! Can you do a couple Zappa lessons ? "Son of Orange County/ More trouble every day" maybe ?
Or if you are doing a Boston Medley, "A man I'll never be" would be killer !!@@Ranch5150SkinWalker
The first 3 albums from Boston are absolute masterpieces...I especially like Third Stage .
Marty these Boston lessons are excellent. Please keep them coming. Got my Rockman Cranked !
Will do! 🍺😎
Great lesson Marty love the classic hard rock from the seventies and eighties
Thanks for the lesson, if you can do more Boston👍
You're welcome! I will do more Boston for sure!
Great song and band....Tom Scholz was underrated and the fact that he doubles as an Electrical Engineer makes me appreciate him even more! Thanks for the lesson Marty.
I was just learning some old Boston yesterday lol. 3 songs. Don’t look back, More then a feelin and Piece of mind.. they’re one of the greatest bands of all time!!
I agree man! Timeless tunes 🎵🎵🎵😎
Thanks for another great lesson Marty. Those two had their hands full on that one.
Hell yes man great lesson love Boston. Thank you for this
Brilliant lesson on a brilliant tune I had forgotten all about. Cheers Marty
Awesome lesson. You could do a part 2 to explain the theory of how melody is used in the solos.
Killer lesson Marty! I was just on a Boston kick lately and looking for a lesson on this song! \../
Killer!!! Thanks man!
You're welcome!
love that monster lick .... see the dawn rising.... always wondered what that was
Awesome 👍
Excellent choice for a lesson, I love Boston, I was 16 when the first record came out and I was hooked, Great video, thanks Marty, have a great weekend 🤘
You're most welcome dude. 😎🎸
Geez now we're going back to my teenage years great job on this lesson Marty really dig when you explain the theory behind the parts 👏👍🤘
You're welcome Mark. Thanks!!!
Great lesson, thanks. Love Boston. 😊
Thank you!! 👍🏽👍🏽
Great lesson 👍🤘 thanks Marty 😊
So many layers! Awesome tutorial! Next Boston song, if you have the chance... Party? Especially the harmonies in the chorus... if then if you could arrange it best for one guitar? You would be the man to do that for sure... thank you again brother! \m/
That was so awesome! You had your Rockman rig dialed in...tone was killer with the Les Paul.
Thanks 🙏. I love the Rockmans... they are so consistent. You just turn em on and bam.... Boston!
Do you think you could make a video with only the harmony park for the solo, I couldn’t find any other video on UA-cam for it
Just love the wall of Marshall cabs .
THANK YOU. THE BEST GUITAR TUTORIAL I'VE EVER SEEN. MUCH ADMIRATION, RESPECT AND LOVE BROTHER. I SUBSCRIBED
You did it! Haha, one of my favorites and such a classic! Boston's first 2 albums blew me away as a teenager including this song. Its amazing, futuristic even today, has survived the test of time.
Glad you liked it man! Such a great song. 😎🎸
Great Boston tone there Marty! Thank for the lesson!
You're welcome!! 😎🎸
Great vid! 💪🏻🎸 You nailed Tom’s tone. May I inquire how you got the tone? 🤔
Excellent video, amazing lesson. So many good things in this lesson. I've always really liked Boston. One of my favorite bands. Thank you. 👍🏻
You're welcome! You're right man, there's a lot to learn in this song. Tom didn't hold back in his writing and arrangements. He put so much care and effort into to these songs.
Very good Video, Thank you
Thanks! 🙏. I appreciate ya watching!
Tom Sholtz and Marty......both never got their just do
True that lol! 😂
I agree!
Hey Marty. Love your stuff. Just curious. There are many ways to get Tom's tone. What is your approach? It sounds great.
Hey man! Thanks! I have 3 rockman units running together ... a sustainor, chord and delay/echo. I run them into stereo into protools. That's it. All Rockmans. 😎🎸
Well, you sound good. Very good. I get that sound by installing .01 caps on my humbuckers. I roll the tone all the way off and voila. @@Ranch5150SkinWalker
@@VPicksGuitarPicks very cool man! That's very interesting indeed. Love to try the Vpicks on day!
Would love to see how that’s wired up. Great lesson and tone!
Marty, was wondering what gear you're using here (besides the Marshalls!) as far as processing or pedals?
Me too!
All Rockmans. 3 rack units.
Sustainor, stereo chorus and stereo echo. 😎
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I see, I wasn’t sure if you were using all that. I have to make do with a Vox modeling amp and a Zoom processor.
In videos of them playing back then you can see the Marshall Super Leads in the background. I wonder what their signal
chain was back then, pre-Rockman.
@@vayabroder729 Right, that Marshall sound was integral to a lot of bands, but also Boston. I"m not even sure what they were using back then. I know if I try to play it here at home, I just use my guitar processor, a Zoom, and set my Vox modeling amp to a solid Marshall sounding channel, and turn the gain up a good way.
There were two albums (yes, I said albums) during this time period that I wore the crap out of, the first Boston album and Leftoverture by Kansas. On my song lists to this day.
Awsome sound man
Thank you!🙏
Man that tone is ? Oh lord the kill. Are those pickups P.A.F.s please specify I'm sure that maple cap has a lot to do with the brightness..awesome bro 2thumbs up.. awesome lesson..thank you.
Thanks man! They're custom buckers they put in the Murphys. I'm running through some rockman rack units too in order to get the Boston tone. 😎🎵
Great lesson! Thank you! What type of effect pedals are you using?
Signal chain?? How do you achieve that sound Martles?
Great job sir
Thanks man! I have 3 Rockmans linked together. Sustainor, stereo chorus and stereo echo/delay. 🎸🤟🏻😎
BTW...your vibrato 😮 killer too!
Thanks so much, what a nice compliment. 😎🤟🏻
I just learned that same chord for the solo to we will rock you! ...hey Marty, u gotta add your singing at 4:23 to the end of your intro music right after DLR.....lol..it would be perfect
My singing is horrible! Hahahaha 😂😂😂😂
did you use your rockman
Please do Sinners Swing by Van Halen
Fun fact. Tom Scholtz was an engineer for Polaroid before his Boston career. 😊
Yeh, he was brilliant! Amazing he was able to record Boston 1 and work full time. He was so devoted and a wizard.
how exactly did you get the guitar sound fer this vid? it sounds completely identical. and yeah BARRY played most of the leads on the second album (none on the first).
Thanks! Rockman sustainor, chorus and delay racks units. 😎🎸
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker i figured a 'rockman' was in there somewhere. did you run direct? i used to be a big mic'ing purist but nowadays even i can't hear any difference.
also, what do you think they woulda used on the album exactly? i know not exactly the same as the first album but what would be yer best guess?
Im gonna take a wild guess and say the 1st and 2nd Boston vinyl's were in 75% of American households back then, even those who didn't even like rock had them. I remember going to friends houses in 3rd grade and it was in the record bin with Conway Twitty, Hee-Haw Favorites and Lips inc. Kind of comparable to Moving Pictures.
Love your lessons . Easy explained and the best in youtube 🫡
Thanks so much man! 😎🎸🤟🏻
would love to know what you are using for the chorus effect
Al Rockmans. Rack units. 👍
Tom played all the solo's on the first album, even did a call & response with himself on "Peace of mind."
It definitely sounds like he did the same on the "Don't look back" album.
Wasn't Barry there to fill out the live performances?
Barry played the solos in long time. And parts on hitch a ride for sure. Barry also played the main leads in don't look back.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I didn't know that, but those leads are all fantastic.
I have to say, it sounds like both Tom & Barry have almost the same soloing style.
@@julianschulz1620 I never had no idea at all until recently. It blew my mind. lol. I know Tom did the majority of the guitar's overall. Barry has a different vibrato and brighter tone if you listen real careful.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I just listened closely this past half hour & compared, and you
are right, you can hear the different styles.
All this time i never knew, it was Barry on Long Time & Don't look back.
Those are iconic leads, and i always believed it was Tom!
@@julianschulz1620 it was hard for me to believe either lol. But the differences the there. I think Tom really tried to keep all this parts to himself because he's so particular and a perfectionist (in the right way). I bet he oversaw and controlled that situation with a microscope. Hahahah.
I should name my next cat chuuka chuuka.
lol 😂
Are you using a Rockman x100 or a Rockman sustainer
I'm using three rack units. The sustainor, stereo chorus and stereo echo/delay. All links together and sent in stereo into pro tools.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker ok thanks, sounds great
I was gonna sub but didn’t see your signal chain. I might change my mind if it’s listed later.
Not much to it. Fractal ax8 and the Friedman BE patch with ml labs Friedman IRs in stereo. Delay and reverb added in pro tools in post.
Check out the art of guitar channel regarding this song. Great video marty
I did, it's cool!
How did you nail that tone?!!!!!
I use 3 rockman rack units. Sustainor.. Into the stereo chorus then into stereo echo/delay. 😎
I wonder if the tone could be closely approximated with amp and pedals. ??
Is this all amp or are you running pedals?
All Rockmans. Sustainor. Chorus and Delay.
@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thank you sir! Great video!
Cool video of a great song.....but, you're playing the rhythm (the "main lick") part wrong. The 2nd part of the lick the 2nd time through is just D, D to E, E each time. Watch any video of him playing it to learn the right way.
🤷
And right off the bat you're playing the rhythm guitar part wrong. It is not the same thing over and over - it alternates. The beginning of the frame is the same, but where you have 777 - XXXX - XXXX - 999 -10,9,11 - 999, every second frame is 777 - XXXX - XXXX - 777 - 777 - 999 and then of course, it changes going into the chorus. The only video I've been able to find of anyone playing the rhythm correctly other than myself and the actual song (if you listen very closely) is a channel called TruthSurge the actual video is ua-cam.com/video/L99P_Ie2crg/v-deo.htmlsi=vNryCJhp-_TEfcUz he cuts into the lead part in the intro but you can clearly hear him playing the alternating (correct) rhythm after that. You're welcome lol!
Thanks for the comment man! All do respect, the way I play this works just fine and is very accurate. Much of guitar is open to interpretation and personal style.
Out of morhid curiosity, when I get comments like this I always have to ask why would you watch if you knew how to play it so perfectly? Or is it an inner need to correct people. I'm not being snarky, I'm just genuinely interested. lol.
I do appreciate you passion and obvious love for Boston. But after playing this song for decades I I don't think I can or will change my methods. It's too ingrained.
