I heard that a young woman dressed as a Maiko or Geisha who walks in public as discrete as possible would be a real Maiko/Geisha. A woman dressed as one who doesn't mind having her picture taken or maybe even poses for a tourist. Well those are Japanese girls who like attention..
Although as a Niigata resident for six years, I learned that Geisha/Geiko are called “Geigi” in Niigata. So I guess there is another term for them in Japanese dialects..
Doesn't surprise me. I think Nagasaki is similar. Teaching students in Nagasaki for five years, no one knows what a 'geisha' is, sometimes they know 'geiko.' They know what a 'maiko' is, but everyone knows the managing company for the prefecture called the Nagasaki Kenban.
I stumbled upon your channel and I'm loving it! I binge-watched some of your videos about Kyoto. I'm really interested in Kyoto, particularly in the Kansai Region. Would you mind sharing us a video about Kansai Region and how is it different from the other regions? I look forward to it, thank you very much! I'll definitely watch your videos always btw
Shogo : Geisha ,geiko, maiko, shogo. Can you explain what the diferent is? Me :one of them is a persons name while the other is a type of "worker" EasyXD
I love how many videos you have on geisha. I’m learning so much! I always thought the bell sound came from the hair ornaments, not the shoes- that’s SO COOL. I’m curious. If a maiko is a young person training to become a geisha, what happens if an adult wants to become a geisha? Can an adult begin geisha training? Do they have a certain names? Do they skip over all the visual differences that maiko have? Can’t wait for more videos on this topic!
Hi there! I hope I can help~ If a person is too old to have an apprentice stage, they would start their journey as a shikomi (Just like the maiko) and debut straight out as a geisha/geiko (Called a Misedashi, she would never experience an erikae because there is no "Collar to turn") . Generally speaking in Kyoto they will work as Jikata, musicians, as they're in high need and the dancing repertoire a maiko would have at her erikae would be hard to catch up with. In Kyoto's Gokagai there are generally two or three women who debut straight out as geiko every year, in Tokyo it's more common for women to debut straight out as Geisha compared to the few that might debut as hangyouku. One of the most famous geiko who debuted straight out as Geiko was Geiko Umeha-san who performs both as a musician and dancer.
oh btw, the fourth one, that's a single class for a single man only, assigned by his own name. that's Shogo! our beloved friend from kyoto. he's here mainly to teach us about Japan. much love
Thank you for leaving a comment! Compulsory education is until middle school in Japan, that's why Maikos start their training when they are 15 years old. However once they start their trainings, they will not be able to go to high school nor college. The way they are trained, is quite traditional.
And most importantly of all since there is still this ridiculous misconception floating around: Geisha and Maiko are NOT prostitutes! Do not hire a geisha with the expectation of having adult fun times with them. It's insulting and will get you blacklisted.
Brilliant thank you so much for this video, I have been fascinated by Geisha & I collect vintage? Kimono I have some knowledge & understanding what I'm buying & what looks Beautiful. Great video thank you so much take care be safe👍⛩🎎💐⛩😊✌🌞
I wondered what the diffrence was. I assumed the maiko's were in training to become gaiko but I wasn't sure. This video explained it very well. I have ADHD so keeping my focus on a explaining video can be difficult, but your explaination was so calm and simple it made me concentrate the whole video! Thank you.
Thank you so much for writing a comment! The reason is actually very simple... Black teeth were thought to be beautiful in Japan! It is a tradition that may have started around the 4th century, a very long time ago. In 1870, once Japan westernized though, dying teeth black was once for bidden by law, because foreign countries thought it was not beautiful. But now the traditions have revived, and geishas and maikos in Kyoto sometimes dye their teeth black.
If Shogo allows me, I'd like to add that nowadays no geisha paint their teeth black, only the maiko do this for like 1 to 2 weeks right before becoming a geiko in a ceremony called erikae. It's like a rite of passage to symbolize adulthood.
I needed information to write my book and came across this man. I really liked that he added his own subtitles and chose cute photos. especially the lesson bell he added before explaining everything me to write my book is asome. Arigato Shogo! (I should mention you in the acknowledgments when my book is finished)
Your absolutely amazing and doing a great service to share the knowledge of Japanese Culture as well as everything surrounding it! I found you randomly 3 days ago and have started watching every episode you have put out to learn so much of what I love....Japanese Culture! So thank you!
Great explanation for understanding culture, what I wish was available in all my Japanese hobbies., instead of usual videos with no commentary and stupid music
I am scared i am a 34 year that dress ki da like a teenager but not on purpose i just be myself but i have tried to mature myself a bit more in comapared to hight school so i don't actauly dress like i did in hight school but still love to wear stuff that is seen not mature. Example love lotita goth.
Most people who become Maikos, don’t go to high school! They need to live together with their superiors to train under them, and they are not even allowed to hold cell phones!
Hi Shogo, question. Do all Maiko has a same hairstyle all over Japan or do they have different hairstyle in each area in Japan? (Planning to make a fanfic that has Maiko in it. But I'm not interested in trying to make an accurate to IRL. So I was thinking of a Maiko with different hairstyle just to make it clear that it was set in fictional setting that is not Kyoto.). (I try to be accurate to IRL so many time and always fail. So I'll just go with the fantasy route.). Sorry for the sudden ranting.
I hope I can help~ You might want to know that the term Maiko is only used in the Kansai region, so you might want to think about where your story is set so you use the correct terms. Apprentices in the Kanto region are called Hangyouku. Maiko wear a lot of different hairstyles through their careers for special events and to show seniority. The every day hairstyle of a junior maiko is the Wareshinobu and the every day hairstyle for a senior maiko is the Ofuku, but again, maiko in Kyoto will go through about a dozen or more hairstyles. For Hangyouku these days both senior and junior will wear the Momoware hairstyle as a wig, except for the few kagai in the Kanto region that allow their girls to choose to have their natural hair styled ^^
Thank you for your explanation! I love so much Japanese people having their high tradition, culture and beautiful costumes. I really love them and their disciplines natured❤❤
If Maiko start training at 15, takes 5 years to train, and the limit is 20 years old, are they not 20 by the time training ends already? Or do they work while also training?
Ah yes, the fourth Japanese figure of culture: the Shogo
Japanese doesn't have a definite article, so you pretty much have to say, "Shogo desu."
Excellent explanation. I came here after watching to Kimono Mom.
Me too
Me too
Me too
Same here🥰we love kimino mom ,i muchmore after listening ur lifestory
I love Kimono Mom!
Sooo the robots in the movie "Ghost in the shell" represented Maikos!! Theres a scene where you can hear the bell sound as she is walking...nice!!
Might be worth to compare them to Oiran, a lot of people mixes up Geiko and Oiran.
Thank you so much, that’s exactly what I thought too!
This is why I made this video...

so basically japanese people invented platform shoes.
Although as a Niigata resident for six years, I learned that Geisha/Geiko are called “Geigi” in Niigata. So I guess there is another term for them in Japanese dialects..

I am here in Jan 2023 after Netflix aired a beautiful show on Maiko.
Thank you so much, I love the integrity you bring to your work. ❤
Same! Very nice show
oh btw, the fourth one, that's a single class for a single man only, assigned by his own name. that's Shogo! our beloved friend from kyoto. he's here mainly to teach us about Japan. much love
thank you)) great video, all clear now)) How does it work now - should Maikos do both their training and regular school?
Thank you for leaving a comment!
Compulsory education is until middle school in Japan, that's why Maikos start their training when they are 15 years old.

Great video thank you so much take care be safe👍⛩🎎💐⛩😊✌🌞
another identification i've read is that if the collar is red then it's a maiko. If the collar is white then it's a geiko.
Thanks a lot! I didn't know about that! How different cultures we have around the world? Thanks.🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
So most outsiders probably would confuse the two, assuming the prettily dressed ones were geisha/geiko.
Here after watching memoirs of a geisha wat a magnificent movie
Ok but in the movie they tried to show her character according to dat ww scenario cs after ww she n other geisha seems unstable
Came here from watching The Makanai on Netflix

Great video Shogo!! Learnt a lot! Why is it that some Geisha blacken their teeth for events?
Thank you so much for writing a comment!

Thank you for your informative videos, i really like your channel
芸妓、芸伎、芸者、which kanji is more commonly used in Japan?
The first one and the third one I believe!
The first one is geiko, and the third one is geisha!
I needed information to write my book and came across this man. I really liked that he added his own subtitles and chose cute photos. especially the lesson bell he added before explaining everything me to write my book is asome. Arigato Shogo! Your absolutely amazing and doing a great service to share the knowledge of Japanese Culture as well as everything surrounding it! I found you randomly 3 days ago and have started watching every episode you have put out to learn so much of what I love....Japanese Culture! So thank you!
Absolutely love your channel!! I first watched, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA a few years back and loved the culture representing these amazing women
Thank you for this video. It was very informative. Did you enjoy your time in Michigan?
So geisha doesn't necessarily mean prostitute.
Geisha doesn't mean prostitute at all.
Great explanation for understanding culture, what I wish was available in all my Japanese hobbies., instead of usual videos with no commentary and stupid music
Thanks for explaining. Great videos.
Thankyou for explaining it very clear!
If they start training since after middle school, do they still go to high school or do they quit school by then?
They would have to stop going to school at middle school! So most of the trainees would not go to high school or university!
I didn't know about the bells in Maiko's Okobo! That's so cute and clever
Why you put shogo in the last 😂
I don’t know either😂
I am scared i am a 34 year that dress ki da like a teenager but not on purpose i just be myself but i have tried to mature myself a bit more in comapared to hight school so i don't actauly dress like i did in hight school but still love to wear stuff that is seen not mature. Do all geisha wear wigs or do some use their own hair like maikos
Are maiko called the same in Kyoto?
ありがとうございました🙇♂️🙏 I'd like your calm attitude, smile and explanation. 👌
I’m very happy you say so😊
I thought "geisha" is for a man
So, does Maiko go to high school? Or is the Geisha training is their high school?
Most people who become Maikos, don’t go to high school! They need to live together with their superiors to train under them, and they are not even allowed to hold cell phones!
Thank you for your videos.
Neptune : "Thank You Zori !!"
Thank you for your video. Very informational.
Too good...and you accent is soothing...
I met two Maiko when they where visiting HI,USA. Your Engrish is very good.
Are you a second gen kpop fan?
Hi Shogo, question. Do all Maiko has a same hairstyle all over Japan or do they have different hairstyle in each area in Japan?

Thank you for this information
Awesome video! Many of these details were not so clear in Memories of a Geisha. You should have been a consultant for that movie 👍
Is that true?! I didn’t know about that!
3:45 you're welcome
Great stuff, keep up the good work!
Thank you very much for leaving a nice comment! I’m very glad you say so!

The shogo: a practicioner in the arts of Iaido, Sado and Noh, they are also your best friends in kyoto
I just saw your short and it made me want to know what it was. Bam. Explained, I'm less uncultured.
But , what about patreon of geisha or geiko? They were no prostitutes.
Do you mean their regular patrons through the tea houses? Or do you mean Danna, their sponsors?
If Maiko start training at 15, takes 5 years to train, and the limit is 20 years old, are they not 20 by the time training ends already? Or do they work while also training?
Wow this channel blew up then! from a goal of 10k subs to over a mil! congrats 👏 😁
I was wondering what they were. I didn't know geisha's were still around.
Hi, I just wanna ask a question. why does maiko don't wear wigs while geisha wears them?
azming
