I've been invited to a Japanese banquet with two geikos (geisha in Kyoto) and I can tell you, people were getting shitfaced and the Geikos weren't exactly sober either. Great food, and extremely fun.
Japan advanced very quickly from a "tribal" (for lack of a different word) society to a modern one. Western countries had a whole series of eras leading us into the Industrial Revolution and onward, while Japan went from being a very simple and ancient type of society straight into WWII and beyond. So they way I see it, they're a lot closer to their roots than we are and took less steps from there to here.
I so love that this video made clear that a Geisha is not a prostitute as is believed in most western countries. A Geisha is a highly trained person of the arts of music, dance, poetry and respectful entertainment.
@@ethiopiansunztv actually most are not. Even in the past they weren't really prostitutes. They could become kept women by one man. Who would usually pay for classes, gifts, komino, rent and things like that. But true geshia dont just sleep with anyone for money. It was/is a whole process that had a ceremony that was performed before it would begin. And the geshia and her danta(not sure if I spelled that right) would be tied by that ceremony for life.

What you're thinking of is the Oiran which is the prostitute counterpart of the Geishas, they're similar in having to learn crafts, arts and be classy like a Geisha but they make their money off by prostitution and entertainment. They might look like Geishas but their wardrobe is more elaborate and colorful to attract attention and the higher class Oiran gets to choose their customer and takes 3 meetings for the Oiran to decide if they want to lend their service to the customer or not... Back in the Edo period the Oiran's were literally celebrities, whenever they get a call from a worthy customer (that needs to be wealthy) they walk over with their group that consists of kamuros and shinzous, which are people who do chores and take care of the Oiran. The banned of prostitution started in 1958 which lead the Oiran profession to die off but the art of the Geisha profession still lives on since they're not prostitutes.

I think it is so amazing how Japan has kept with some of its older traditions while becoming extremely modern at the same time. I really hope the art of Geisha's stays around. They seem so talented and graceful. Simply amazing. Thank you for the special look into the Geisha experience.
Lauren Curton Japan is not nearly as modern as you would think...the nice toilets hide a lot of issues they have like sexism, a lack of job creation and innovation which are hurting their economy tremendously. Much of this stems from traditional values they have which have not modernized. Japanese culture has some great qualities but you never see a lot of the negatives in vloggers videos. Just saying.
Lunchbox I have no doubt Japan has its negative side, but Japan is the only country to have been westernized without losing its sense of self. Again, I have no doubt it has its bad side. What country doesn't? But as a U.S citizen I don't see a whole lot of instances where an older tradition is kept and maintained for so long. Also, there are plenty of bloggers out there and some do in fact show the less popular side of the countries they live in. UA-cam is vast, if you want to find it you can. But why go out of your way to find something bad? Now turning to the youtubers of the video; Rachel and Jun do a fantastic job sharing Japanese culture and in some of their videos they go into what you may see as the bad side of Japan. But rather than focusing on making people try to see the bad side of something. Enjoy the piece of culture they are sharing and be positive to those who are trying to appreciate it from far away.
The literal translation of a Geisha or geiko is something like "art person". They are highly trained not only to engage their customers but to play instruments and dance almost flawlessly. I highly recommend reading "Geisha: A Life" which is the true memoir that inspired the book and movie Memoirs of a Geisha.

The geiko, mineko iwasaki was so disgusted by how much Arthur Golden perverted her story and the profession she loved so much that she wrote her own memoir to set the record straight and tried to undo some old the damage that Arthur Golden caused to the profession
'Kimichou recently retired. She was systematically bullied and harrassed by Fiona Graham (who advertises herself as “Sayuki - the first/only western Geisha”) and people who believe/follow her and since most of the bullying happened online, her okaasan and sisters couldn’t do much to help her. She couldn’t handle it anymore and left'

I feel like that's just impossible with some people, at least in certain situations though haha. Someone with really bad social anxiety will just never really feel comfortable outside their own home. At no fault to the Geisha. That's just my two cents though as I am someone who is only presuming, since I don't have extreme social anxiety and have never experienced a geisha! =)
It is so so upsetting that Kimicho san has now retired. I would have loved to meet her when I go to Japan next year. It is still my dream to party with geisha!
Vtuber culture is the answer. But the difference is.. You can't meet them physically. But vtuber idols/streamer can reach more customers/audiences. Both selling their voice, talk, and other skill like dance and even maybe drawing. And also play game of course. And most of them avoiding the sexual service. Yeah most. Because few of them also can do sexual service(s) for extra tips. And they got paid because they doing these thing.

I've seen a lot of people on the web commenting that traditional geisha dancing is too simplistic and doesn't seem like much effort. That is an incredible insult to both geishas and dancers. Take this lady for example. Look at what she is wearing. Those are yards and yards of fabric, heavy makeup, hair and accessories. As a dancer myself who has performed in similarly ristrictive costumes and gear I can honestly tell you when you're wearing that much stuff on your body, no matter how loose fitting or well made it is it is complicated, constricting and incredibly hard to do even the simplest of choreographies in such attire. Geishas - and dancers deserve MUCH respect. I mainly work here in the west, so I don't know the attitude towards dancers in Japan, but here sadly we are often put aside. Especially if we are part of a bigger performance where there are singers and actors or the like involved. We are always the ones with the longest days because we have to attend at a certain time, but usually the actors or musicians rehearsals go WAY over that and we are sort of given the scraps of time that are left. It is hard to be able to perform and learn and do your very best when you have already spent most of your day waiting, not knowing when it will be your time to work, and still trying to keep warm and limber. Dance as a profession definitely deserves more respect than it gets. The work is hard, the hours awful and the pay dreadful.
Lars Stoerloes not just that, but there's also the body control to be able to move like that period, nvm with all the kimono and accessories, without falling over. I'm a folk dancer, and moving like that is not as easy as people think.

I danced japanese folk dance a few times 'Soran Bushi,' and even though the movement is different and much more noticeable, I still fine the dance itself very hard (One, I wasn't a dancer from the start. Two, it needs to 'feel' a certain way which I had to practice hard to get it almost right. The uncle who watch the training always did it sooooo much better than us.
Lars Stoerloes Agree. just wearing a casual kimono and walking with it isn't a comfortable experience. don't get me wrong, kimonos are incredibly beautiful but they are also painful to wear. just the wear up process itself is a real challenge. plus here she has a wig/special hairstyle. So dancing with all these elements must be really hard.

Imagine being a young American soldier, haven’t been farther than their own town until recently and very much alone, when you saw one of these beautiful foreign ladies in makeup. I still think that geishas are so much of an elite and so hard to be seein around (cause most of those "geisha" that let tourist take pictures usually are not real geisha), to me they are like a fairy tale (in a good way, i like the mistery aura around them)
I would love to know about Kimicho-san's experience as a westerner in an industry that doesn't see westerners typically. I'd love to know how the process of becoming a geisha started for her, and how customers and co-workers reacted to her. I respect geishas so much. They can be so elegant, and move so smoothly while dancing.
Okay, I have a question and this is a little confusing to me I must say.One of the first things I heard about Japan was no tips, ever. Not in a restaurant, not a taxi driver etc. So why tip a geisha, why is it accepted and expected? (any other (non-geisha related) instances were you should tip in Japan?)

Kimicho just barely left the profession due to harassment and bullying from the pretender and fraud Fiona Graham :( so unfortunate. Lost a truly inspirational and talented geiko.
I love the concept of the geisha. She is the ultimate host and MC. They can sing, dance, play instruments, facilitate conversation, play games, serve clients... everything! How cool would it be to have a small wedding with a few geisha hosting the reception rather than the usual annoying DJ? Far more memorable.
Geishas are living arts. It's sad that the industry is smaller now but it's great to see their effortd along with tbe help of their government to keeo this culture alive. They're amazing and the perfect hostess. They will adapt their personalities depending on their clients' needs and that's not easy but they do amazingly in the aspect.
I love that they're allowing foreigners to become geisha. The thought of that happening is fascinating to me as Japan does tend to be a very closed culture and there are so many ways you could accidentally be disrespectful or end up treating their culture like a game. But I love that things are opening up more.

Cultural appropriation is when you basically mimick something from a culture, and act like you do it better (wear it better, make it better, ect) or make it only acceptable for you to do it. For example, white washing Native Americans and stripping them of their land, culture, and rights, but then wearing a Native American headdress to Coachella.

That's the goal of every human on earth, to travel the world, but it's money that always gets in our way, for the average American like myself, the biggest problem with going on vacation is the fact, that your even more broke, after you return home from vacation, for most Americans even taking a vacation at home with pay, you still end up losing more money than actual working those paid vacation hours.
That's what money is for though, to enjoy yourself. Lots of people work those extra hours and take no vacation and what do they have for it. You won't say at your deathbed "Gee I wish I'd spend more hours at work."

I think this is so wonderful to watch in such a natural setting. I love the ancient traditions and adherence to etiquette the Japanese retain. It is very much a dying thing in the west. Also, if you ever go to Japan and wish to have a geisha party, make sure of your proncouciation :D For the purpose of this history lesson I'll make it a little colorfull. Geisha (correctly pronounced Gay-sha (because they're fabulous)) are traditionally a dinner companion/entertainer in the japanese arts. If you pronounce it Gee-sha, like many westerners do, it can be taken as you being extremely rude, or that your wish is for a more "adult" form of entertainment. The difference comes from the allied temporary administration period after the war, when young, male soldiers might go on shoreleave and be feeling a little frisky. Spesific houses were set up for them to visit, but staffed by females offering a Geisha experience that had nothing to do with what the Geisha actually do. The name for "that" sort of house came to be known as Geesha houses because it was the more natural way for americans to say the word.

I find Japanese the older/ traditional culture just so facinating. if I ever get to go to Japan, I would really like to see the older parts with the traditional rice paper and wood houses, and beautiful water/ Rock gardens. from what I have seen in pictures and movies it just looks awesome! Traditional paper and wood houses look really awesome, but they are COLD! I slept in one at 7 degrees C. outside, omg. Unique experience, but I would repeat that only in summer. I love my properly insulated western building :)
The gratuitity caught me off guard too since I have read it's near an insult to tip in Japan. I tried to tip a taxi driver in Hong Kong two years ago and the driver seemed confused if not disgusted. My wife explained it to him and though he accepted the tip did not seem happy.
+mike naples In Hong Kong if you really want to tip a taxi driver, just ask the driver to keep the change. The driver may still be confused though, we just don't have this tip culture. We used to tip in restaurants, but since the 10% service charge was introduced, ppl start not to do so. You can still secretly tip the waiter if you appreciate his service, but remember anything going with the bill will not end up in the waiters' hands (I recommend you to only do this in classy restaurants or hotels because they tend to accept tips better than those smaller ones).
What a lovely and informative video! I didn't know you could order a geisha online. I also thought you'll always need to have a recommendation so you can't be a "first time customer". Jun was so manly until he choked on the beer XD I can imagine geisha probably have a major disadvantage in the rock/paper/scissors leg-spreading game due to their tight kimono... but maybe they're all this good and never lose? :P It was interesting to see the Geisha in their service roles - it's like having a performer and entertainer all wrapped up in a ceremonious manner. ooh I love this! I just watched a documentary about geishas last week and all they ever talked about was how they would entertain men and all the 'parties' they would go to were males only so I thought it's basically impossible or maybe just socially unacceptable? for women to hire geishas but now I see that it can be done so that's cool, thank you!
Because of the "geesha girl" of the 1940's who were simply prostitutes who sold themselves to American soldiers after the war. Also, traditionally, Geisha did provide carnal services, though it was more of a silent service option for customers rather than their true purpose. Also, they weren't allowed to refuse back in the day like they are now, so those "silent services" were more readily available.
One misconception I had about geisha was that their performances are serious, thought-provoking affairs, meant to be viewed as fine art. That's not true at all - they're entertainers and seriously want you to have a fun, memorable time in their company. This video did a great job of showing that. :)
I'm like a more in depth interview with kimisho, what's her real name?, were is she from? is she becoming a geisha?,why she decided to live in japan? etc...I don't really know is a foreign woman can become into a geisha, that would be really interesting.
You can Google Kimicho and you'll find plenty about her. She's done a few interviews in the past, as well, that are readily available online. It's extremely difficult to become a geisha as a foreigner, but there are 6 foreign geisha currently. I really respect maiko, geisha, the music player, etc. they must make the party fun, a strong drinker, stay pretty, stay smiling, dance gracefully, play music and make conversation to any kind of clients. man that’s a hard job.
As a western woman who has always been fascinated with traditional Japanese arts, I was extremely entertained watching Kimiko dance, sing and play shamisen. I don't think I've ever seen an Westerner perform those things. She's a lovely woman and I can tell she loves what she does. Great video, very interesting.

Kimicho has never been a maiko (maiko is only for Kyoto aprentices). Also I believe she has never been a hangyoku (correct term for Tokyo apprentices). I've seen Kimicho wearing shironuri before, she looks really pretty =)

Curious about the general purpose of a Geisha at a party. Do they act as a form of icebreaker at formal parties, or are they perhaps the extrovert component of parties which may contain a majority of introvert people? Seems like if a party is boring or there are a lot of tension in a party that one would call upon a Geisha to entertain and stimulate the chatter / jabber at a party in order to make the party more interesting / memorable to those that attend the party.
I think it's less about worrying about how outgoing people are, and more just about planning some entertainment in advance for the evening, often for fancy business dinners. Kind of like the difference between scheduling a dinner at a normal restaurant vs a restaurant with a stage for performances. You're just planning to be entertained. :)
What I expected: Sitting all proper, pouring tea and doing poetry.
What I did NOT expect: "WAT UP LOSERS, TIME FOR SOME HARDCORE DRINKING GAMES!!!"

I think it is so amazing how Japan has kept with some of its older traditions while becoming extremely modern at the same time. I really hope the art of Geisha's stays around. They seem so talented and graceful. Simply amazing. Thank you for the special look into the Geisha experience.
Lauren Curton Japan is not nearly as modern as you would think...the nice toilets hide a lot of issues they have like sexism, a lack of job creation and innovation which are hurting their economy tremendously. Much of this stems from traditional values they have which have not modernized. Japanese culture has some great qualities but you never see a lot of the negatives in vloggers videos. Just saying.
Lunchbox I have no doubt Japan has its negative side, but Japan is the only country to have been westernized without losing its sense of self. Again, I have no doubt it has its bad side. What country doesn't? But as a U.S citizen I don't see a whole lot of instances where an older tradition is kept and maintained for so long. Also, there are plenty of bloggers out there and some do in fact show the less popular side of the countries they live in. UA-cam is vast, if you want to find it you can. But why go out of your way to find something bad? Now turning to the youtubers of the video; Rachel and Jun do a fantastic job sharing Japanese culture and in some of their videos they go into what you may see as the bad side of Japan. But rather than focusing on making people try to see the bad side of something. Enjoy the piece of culture they are sharing and be positive to those who are trying to appreciate it from far away.

The literal translation of a Geisha or geiko is something like "art person". They are highly trained not only to engage their customers but to play instruments and dance almost flawlessly. I highly recommend reading "Geisha: A Life" which is the true memoir that inspired the book and movie Memoirs of a Geisha.

I feel like that's just impossible with some people, at least in certain situations though haha. Someone with really bad social anxiety will just never really feel comfortable outside their own home. At no fault to the Geisha. That's just my two cents though as I am someone who is only presuming, since I don't have extreme social anxiety and have never experienced a geisha! =)

Jun is legitimately hilarious and charming, and so much goofier than I expected
I've seen a lot of people on the web commenting that traditional geisha dancing is too simplistic and doesn't seem like much effort. That is an incredible insult to both geishas and dancers. Take this lady for example. Look at what she is wearing. Those are yards and yards of fabric, heavy makeup, hair and accessories. As a dancer myself who has performed in similarly ristrictive costumes and gear I can honestly tell you when you're wearing that much stuff on your body, no matter how loose fitting or well made it is it is complicated, constricting and incredibly hard to do even the simplest of choreographies in such attire. Geishas - and dancers deserve MUCH respect. I mainly work here in the west, so I don't know the attitude towards dancers in Japan, but here sadly we are often put aside. Especially if we are part of a bigger performance where there are singers and actors or the like involved. We are always the ones with the longest days because we have to attend at a certain time, but usually the actors or musicians rehearsals go WAY over that and we are sort of given the scraps of time that are left. It is hard to be able to perform and learn and do your very best when you have already spent most of your day waiting, not knowing when it will be your time to work, and still trying to keep warm and limber. Dance as a profession definitely deserves more respect than it gets. The work is hard, the hours awful and the pay dreadful.
Lars Stoerloes not just that, but there's also the body control to be able to move like that period, nvm with all the kimono and accessories, without falling over. I'm a folk dancer, and moving like that is not as easy as people think.

I danced japanese folk dance a few times 'Soran Bushi,' and even though the movement is different and much more noticeable, I still fine the dance itself very hard (One, I wasn't a dancer from the start. Two, it needs to 'feel' a certain way which I had to practice hard to get it almost right. The uncle who watch the training always did it sooooo much better than us.
Lars Stoerloes Agree. just wearing a casual kimono and walking with it isn't a comfortable experience. don't get me wrong, kimonos are incredibly beautiful but they are also painful to wear. just the wear up process itself is a real challenge. plus here she has a wig/special hairstyle. So dancing with all these elements must be really hard.
The dancing actually seems difficult to me; obviously needs a lot of control, technique, and precision.
If they complain that it is too simplistic that is because they do not understand.
Wow this is super interesting! It's great that you could make a video about this. Especially since there are so many misconceptions about geishas, especially in western culture.

Thor Harald Johansen Even if it was real geishas they met, can’t really blame the GIs to think they’re prostitutes. Imagine being a young American soldier, haven’t been farther than their own town until recently and very much alone, when you saw one of these beautiful foreign ladies in makeup. Definitely prostitutes, that’s what they’ll think.

I still think that geishas are so much of an elite and so hard to be seein around (cause most of those "geisha" that let tourist take pictures usually are not real geisha), to me they are like a fairy tale (in a good way, i like the mistery aura around them)
I would love to know about Kimicho-san's experience as a westerner in an industry that doesn't see westerners typically. I'd love to know how the process of becoming a geisha started for her, and how customers and co-workers reacted to her.

Okay, I have a question and this is a little confusing to me I must say.One of the first things I heard about Japan was no tips, ever. Not in a restaurant, not a taxi driver etc.
So why tip a geisha, why is it accepted and expected?
(any other (non-geisha related) instances were you should tip in Japan?)

I love the concept of the geisha. She is the ultimate host and MC. They can sing, dance, play instruments, facilitate conversation, play games, serve clients... everything!
How cool would it be to have a small wedding with a few geisha hosting the reception rather than the usual annoying DJ? Far more memorable.
Geishas are living arts. It's sad that the industry is smaller now but it's great to see their effortd along with tbe help of their government to keeo this culture alive. They're amazing and the perfect hostess. They will adapt their personalities depending on their clients' needs and that's not easy but they do amazingly in the aspect.

I love that they're allowing foreigners to become geisha. The thought of that happening is fascinating to me as Japan does tend to be a very closed culture and there are so many ways you could accidentally be disrespectful or end up treating their culture like a game. But I love that things are opening up more.
Maybe if you become a full Japanese citizen, it is more accepting?

Cultural appropriation is when you basically mimick something from a culture, and act like you do it better (wear it better, make it better, ect) or make it only acceptable for you to do it. For example, white washing Native Americans and stripping them of their land, culture, and rights, but then wearing a Native American headdress to Coachella.

That's the goal of every human on earth, to travel the world, but it's money that always gets in our way, for the average American like myself, the biggest problem with going on vacation is the fact, that your even more broke, after you return home from vacation, for most Americans even taking a vacation at home with pay, you still end up losing more money than actual working those paid vacation hours.
Not everyone wishes to travel the world.
That's what money is for though, to enjoy yourself. Lots of people work those extra hours and take no vacation and what do they have for it. You won't say at your deathbed "Gee I wish I'd spend more hours at work."
I envy the kind of emotional depth Japanese culture has. Their ways of discipline and communication with silence is very elegant. Thank you for sharing.

I think this is so wonderful to watch in such a natural setting. I love the ancient traditions and adherence to etiquette the Japanese retain. It is very much a dying thing in the west.
Also, if you ever go to Japan and wish to have a geisha party, make sure of your proncouciation :D For the purpose of this history lesson I'll make it a little colorfull.
Geisha (correctly pronounced Gay-sha (because they're fabulous)) are traditionally a dinner companion/entertainer in the japanese arts.
If you pronounce it Gee-sha, like many westerners do, it can be taken as you being extremely rude, or that your wish is for a more "adult" form of entertainment.
The difference comes from the allied temporary administration period after the war, when young, male soldiers might go on shoreleave and be feeling a little frisky. Spesific houses were set up for them to visit, but staffed by females offering a Geisha experience that had nothing to do with what the Geisha actually do. The name for "that" sort of house came to be known as Geesha houses because it was the more natural way for americans to say the word.

Traditional paper and wood houses look really awesome, but they are COLD! I slept in one at 7 degrees C. outside, omg. Unique experience, but I would repeat that only in summer. I love my properly insulated western building :)

The gratuitity caught me off guard too since I have read it's near an insult to tip in Japan. I tried to tip a taxi driver in Hong Kong two years ago and the driver seemed confused if not disgusted. My wife explained it to him and though he accepted the tip did not seem happy.
+mike naples In Hong Kong if you really want to tip a taxi driver, just ask the driver to keep the change. The driver may still be confused though, we just don't have this tip culture. We used to tip in restaurants, but since the 10% service charge was introduced, ppl start not to do so. You can still secretly tip the waiter if you appreciate his service, but remember anything going with the bill will not end up in the waiters' hands (I recommend you to only do this in classy restaurants or hotels because they tend to accept tips better than those smaller ones).

Good to know it's also possible for a first timer. I wonder how many westerners are training to become a geisha or how many western geisha there are? Must be a very interesting training experience.

I just watched a documentary about geishas last week and all they ever talked about was how they would entertain men and all the 'parties' they would go to were males only so I thought it's basically impossible or maybe just socially unacceptable? for women to hire geishas but now I see that it can be done so that's cool, thank you!

Why people have misconception?
It literally means girl who sell/show art
Because of the "geesha girl" of the 1940's who were simply prostitutes who sold themselves to American soldiers after the war. Also, traditionally, Geisha did provide carnal services, though it was more of a silent service option for customers rather than their true purpose. Also, they weren't allowed to refuse back in the day like they are now, so those "silent services" were more readily available.
One misconception I had about geisha was that their performances are serious, thought-provoking affairs, meant to be viewed as fine art. That's not true at all - they're entertainers and seriously want you to have a fun, memorable time in their company. This video did a great job of showing that. :)
I've always been fascinated with Geisha culture.

I really respect maiko, geisha, the music player, etc. they must make the party fun, a strong drinker, stay pretty, stay smiling, dance gracefully, play music and make conversation to any kind of clients. man that’s a hard job.
As a western woman who has always been fascinated with traditional Japanese arts, I was extremely entertained watching Kimiko dance, sing and play shamisen. I don't think I've ever seen an Westerner perform those things. She's a lovely woman and I can tell she loves what she does. Great video, very interesting.

It's not required to wear the white makeup after the maiko apprenticeship, and it costs more to hire a geisha in white makeup with the lacquered wig.

Kimicho has never been a maiko (maiko is only for Kyoto aprentices). Also I believe she has never been a hangyoku (correct term for Tokyo apprentices). I've seen Kimicho wearing shironuri before, she looks really pretty =)

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that they use wax in their hair to give it shine and help it stay in place

Curious about the general purpose of a Geisha at a party. Do they act as a form of icebreaker at formal parties, or are they perhaps the extrovert component of parties which may contain a majority of introvert people? Seems like if a party is boring or there are a lot of tension in a party that one would call upon a Geisha to entertain and stimulate the chatter / jabber at a party in order to make the party more interesting / memorable to those that attend the party.
I think it's less about worrying about how outgoing people are, and more just about planning some entertainment in advance for the evening, often for fancy business dinners. Kind of like the difference between scheduling a dinner at a normal restaurant vs a restaurant with a stage for performances. You're just planning to be entertained. :)

All of what you said is the purpose of the geisha. They also show their skills at geisha etiquette, traditional dance and music.
