    I LOVE LOVE LOVE K390.
And here's my stupid reason why. I am not afraid to USE and ABUSE it!
SO many other steels/knives do not feel like real working steels for me. This stains, it gets used, it is so hard it takes it and holds the edge, so you use it more. It gets that patina and it gets appreciated.
I am a giant K390 fan for actual real use knives over premium knives I am scared to bring out to do a job.
    Great stuff.

For people wondering, that 1000 grit finish is off of a TSProf diamond stone and it’s measured in FEPA. So F1000 which is equivalent to 4,500 grit. Don’t assume you can get a mirror polish off of regular 1000 grit

    • @jamesgosling4303

I was wondering…Thanks!!! How does the KME grit rating compare (hard to get what grit rating companies use sometimes)

    • @mcsquirgle
      @mcsquirgle Рік тому +3

I feel like we should make sure that Pete knows this. the F400 FEPA stone on the TSProf he used for the Endela is more equivalent to about 1077 grit in Imperial. even the F150 Stone is worth about 227 grit American

    Hi guy!
Thought I would give you a tip. You mentioned that your D-2 knives were rusting. I made knives as a Custom Maker for over 47 years, and have used a lot of other makers D-2 knives. I have never, so much as once had a Real D-2 knife rust. Ever! I have cleaned countless heads of game with D-2 knives from several makers. All high hardness, all well finished. Some of the top makers out there over the years.
Jimmy Lile. Bob Dozer, George Herron, and mine as well. All held an edge considerably better than any I've seen yot test in the steel. At 63+ it really shines! Yet I've tested a lot of Chinese D-2 knives and all but one we very non-impressive. Now were much better than 440-B or AUS-8 which are both terrible edgeholders
I notice that you keep your knives in a plastic divided container. You see, plastic causes moisture to concentrate and a much higher rate, particularly in a humid environment that say a dry wood, or cardboard.
It may very well be the container (tray you are keeping your knives in.
For those that do not know, also keeping your knives in a leather sheath or pouch can cause all kinds of damage. Leather is tanned using varying taningacids and these acids attack metal. Again, it is much worse in humid environments.
Very much enjoy your efforts in testing. Fine Work!!!
    KnifeMaker/Retired

I respect seeing honesty, sharpness testing requires a set standard, and I understand sticking to your testing method. The higher polished edge will better resist corrosion and the buildup of sticky materials. Cutting rope is your testing standard, too late in the game to change now.

Interesting test! I have one question: Could you tell me the thicknesses behind the edges? That might explain why(if the HT is the same) the Stretch outcut the Police. And it would be interesting to know in general. My guess is the Stretch is thinner behind the 17 dps edge.
I also have the Stretch 2 and I have to admit that I like K390, so far, more than M4, hen it comes to how it holds its edge and how it can be stropped back. If I would have to pick a sssteel for a knife like the Stretch or Endura, a work/test knife...it would be k390. Especially if it is ground thinner behind the edge.
    Good video!

So you’ve explored K390 performance variation with edge finish as applied to rope. Is it too much to hope for a repeat test but on onions? If time is a constraint then you might limit testing to the Endela, your primary onion knife. I’d be comfortable with extrapolating the results to other knives and other vegetables.

Ever tried k390 at 15 degrees per side or even less? Around 15 seems to be about the limit for k390 in my testing with dropping my angle much lower than that significantly reduced the edge retention. But I hand sharpen all my edges and don’t measure the angle exactly so these numbers for me are educated guesses. I always try to sharpen all my knives to produce the highest edge retention and slicing ease without worrying about how the edge looks so my edges are almost always 10-15 degrees per side depending on the steel. K390 is one of the only few I’ve not had good results with taking it lower than around 15 per side.

I'd love to see some comparison to other manufacturers' K390, but it's not a common steel. Only other option I'm aware of is from Lionsteel who've been quite well known for running their M390 softer than average, but I don't know if that applies to any of their other steels or not.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the Spyderco Enuff 2 in K390 when it comes out later this year.
Kinda want a Stretch 2 XL in K390 or Magnacut, but the pricing on those particular models are FAR higher than what makes sense to me right now (the CruWear model that's been released is just under 2.5X the price of the VG10 model, both of which are made in the Seki factory).

The problem with lionsteel is the protocol. They dont use liquid nitrogen. They get 60rc in spec but its poor performance because of how its heat treated. Rc numbers are mostly bs unless there is context with it. Lionsteel could raise it to 62rc or even 64rc but with that same protocol it's not going to perform well regardless. Watch microstructure matters. You'll learn a few things. Though there's a lot more involved than what's discussed in that video.
