@@aditisk99 look more carefully. Some parts of the action were done by stuntmen. Slow the video down if you have to. Anyway, the flinging into the fridge was not the actor but a stuntman. Pay attention to the video cuts. Its still a great scene though and very realistic.

@@jamesmcallister8124 It's true. I know it doesn't seem like it. That's the negative bias in the brain. We all have it, and even I find myself getting sucked in to it sometimes.
The nice thing is that once you are aware of it, you can stand back and reel it in, and start seeing things more objectively before it takes you someplace you really don't want to go.
But your main point is still correct. I feel sorry for anyone who had a father like Dwight. That;s something no one should ever have to suffer.

Been there with the step dad. He’s dead 20 years but he still haunts and demolishes me in my dreams. I’m 40 next year. He was a violent, jealous, petty, broken, bully and martyr.
I’m a recovering heroin and crack addict and I have slip ups now and then. I wake up in cold sweat when I dream he’s coming through the attic trap door (my room
Was in the attic for most my childhood) Roaring my name in fury like the Hulk...and I’m trying to use my weight to stop him. The door is lifting and banging up and I’m pushing down so hard. He did give me my two sisters with my mother but he was a violent, psychotic bully and i fear , hate, love and despise him all at once.
No beating he ever gave did as much damage as the one he did to my mind and consequently my soul

This fight was so epic with how heated it got. Both fantastic actors from their outbursts to the red hot angry faces. You can tell in this movie the tension between them was only building higher and higher, and it all blows up right here over the mustard, even though it wasn’t really about the mustard. At some point many of us have had tension with others build until one little thing not relevant to the real issue sets everything off. This scene nailed that perfectly. I’ve never had an abusive family, but it still feels real to me for some reason. The anger Leo’s character was feeling, and the psychical stuff. I guess that’s just how good De Niro and DiCaprio are.

What I thought was so great about this scene was the DiCaprio character no longer cared. He had enough. He knew Dwight was stronger, and could probably kill him -- and probably could have had his mom not interjected, but even then, guys like Dwight tend to be too big of cowards -- and he didn't care anymore, but he was going to hurt him as much as he could on the way out.
There is also the reality of what happens when you no longer care about the consequences. Which although, is usually not a good place to be, but in some cases like this one, it can be the most empowering.

It was always,” Quit acting like you grown!l Or ,”Shut up, you don’t know anything!” Or, “ you think you are smarter than me?” No, just read different books about different things. He ended up going to prison and we moved far away. Took years, to learn, finally, about Narcissistic personality Disorder and lots of study on self-esteem, to realize these people are wounded. I had it like this growing up... Got into it once with my stepdad. I literally packed my mom's things up FOR HER and we left. We were good as gone for a weekend, but unlike DiCaprio and his mom in this movie, we went back. I walked in the old house and mom was getting the cases out the car. Pops was drinking himself to death and I had to carry him to the shower to have him come to. When the water got him out of it he looked up, started crying, stood up, grabbed me fast for a hug, and I wasn't even half scared of him at that point. The man was stressed beyond belief, working himself mentally and physically into the ground. Now that I'm 28 and have been working about as hard as he was, I do house demolitions, I understand how easily it can be to slip into depression trying to provide. The next day or two, mom admitted all the cheating and everything throughout childhood. Him and my mom may have gotten divorced, but he was still never just a stepdad. Moral of the story, there's a lot of time in our short lives. You can either forgive and move on alone, or you can forgive together.
All I know is him and I are as close as we are because of that fight, and seeing him like that.

I remember my older brother and dad fighting like this. I was prolly around the same age as Eliza dushku and I did the same thing. I knew I couldnt break it up so I jus ran outside to be with our dog till I heard things die down inside My brother didn't come home for a couple days. I still remember going with my dad to go get him. They reconciled

I feel bad for Robert De Niro's character in this movie. He reminded me a lot of my dad and on surface level it is easy to hate him. But there is always a lot more to things like this. At the time, it was easy to hate him, but now that I am older and look back and have a bit more knowledge about my dad and his past and have a better understanding of everything, I felt really sorry for him. There are things about his life which I still won't know or understand, but from what I do know and understand now, I have a lot of sympathy for him.

Your sympathy is true, and compassionate, and valid, don't ever change it. Sadly it's also exactly why women stay. Why they waste their lives believing that "what about me" is a good enough reason not to leave. (Almost) no one is wholly evil, and there are many reasons to have sympathy for those who destroy the lives of others, because they were born or created 'needy' or selfish. We can always find the good in them if we try. But STAYING won't make His Life Better. It will only serve to destroy both lives. She will never make him happy. She can't ever fix him. She is only enabling him. I'm just saying this - - to all women out there, don't sacrifice your life for a sad hopeless cause. Get space and years between you - and only then - will it be safe to feel that compassion for him again. For now - turn it off. It's your turn. What about you.

This scene is epic, probably the best of both.
My father used to beat me like this when a was a young teenager, he had anger attacks and most of the time I suffered the consecuences. One day when he was beating me I grabbed his hands and pushed him with so much power that he fell off, in response he went after me with a cloud of punches all over my body and head, but after that day I think he realized that I wasn`t willing to take those beatings any more and happily for me the beatings were over. Then it was when the mental and psychological abuse started but that`s another story.
