The way his voice cracks when he cries absolutely breaks my heart. He's a natural born actor and if nothing else has convinced people of his incredible talent, this scene will. It completely shattered my heart when I first saw the movie.
Omg I cried and cried..I remember my 4 yr old son asking me 2 hold his hand when he was scare and I'm sure this is what this mom thought of when she saw her hopelessly addicted son hitting one of his bottoms...no matter what they will always be ur baby...😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
"I need like 5-..10..20 dollars" is such a small line, but it carries SO much weight with it. In his head, he's thinking of all the drugs he thinks he needs. At first he says 5 dollars to be less greedy towards his mum, but then he realizes 5 dollars probably wont get him much, so 10 dollars has more leeway for him. But then he realizes that he is probably going to need another dose at some point, and thats another 10 dollars, upping it to 20. Even when speaking to his mum, this scene shows at that moment, he can ONLY think about drugs.
This scene was so heartbreaking, It shows the truth of actual addiction and withdrawal. I honestly don't know why Leo didn't get praised for his work in this film and why it's so underrated. It's 100% worth a watch
It's perfect acting on both parts, Lorraine Bracco and Leo...the pain on their faces, the destruction of addiction and the measures that need 2 be taken to try to recover...O.M.G

Its just so fucking true, the whole thing was based on a real addicts story and he absolutely nailed it, got addicted at 14 and went through some similar shit its fucked when its got those hooks in you.
Léo Bergeron-Cyr And he plays it to a T I’ve been there and obviously you’ve been there also I remember a couple of occasions when I got to that point with my own mom without cussing her or calling her names of course but I am almost 2 years clean hope you are too
The fact that Jim was in pain and crying and he was able to still be extremely manipulative towards hims mother shows how much of an amazing actor was and still is. Especially when Leo was ages 19-24 because he was super popular and that was his prime. What an amazing actor💕💕
I've seen so many movies where he deserved the oscar and I agree aviator definitely but i think out of all of them the departed was his best performance
He was so good in What's Eating Gilbert Grape that people actually thought he was autistic until they interviewed him. He's that GOOD, and a testimony of how he shouldv'e gotten an Oscar at the very beginning of his career already.
I remember crying like this when my mother abused me… so obviously those were different circumstances but I was just as desperate as he is in this scene. Not knowing nor caring what will happen next. Hitting absolute rock bottom. Man, when he says “why would do you this to your son” I couldn’t help but cry again. I was wondering the same back then. It’s just the worst feeling ever, words cannot describe it.
That's right Leo has been brilliant on everything he does, I can't believe Jennifer Lawrence got one and he didn't. What a JOKE!! really hope they give him one soon. He deserve it more than anyone else. I mean he's been nominated since he's 16 year old. GIVE LEO HIS OSCAR ALREADY!
My mom will not even give me two dollars....Then two days later she will give me a purse. But that line really hit me. Even when she called the police. I was just so...what’s that word again...oh... the word is sad.
Leo is amazing. The runny nose, the sickness and anxiety. And the frustration when they don't want to give you money. Junkies aren't bad people, they just don't want to feel pain. Withdrawals are the ultimate downfall. When u get a cut, the pain is bearable but when you experience withdrawals, your body goes to the fullest extent of pain which will cause u to act irrational or steal. Not because they are assholes, its because their brain is in survival mode. You will do things knowing its wrong but the survival extinct in your brain will cause u to do the wrong thing cuz the pain is unbearable
Yeah, this is why people who are serious pain or have something wrong with them (mental or physical) get addicted to even pain killers. I know I almost have and nearly have overdosed on them because I was in so much pain.
Thank you for being rational and posting something like this. So many people tend to just write addicts off as losers, idiots, thieves, wastes of lives. But in reality addiction is a serious illness warping peoples' brains and perspectives and it can affect anyone. It's so important to see people making comments like this instead of negativity coming from an uneducated perspective. My mom is an addict very similar to this, and as much as it's painful to watch someone you love kill themselves and steal from you, it doesn't mean they can't love or have no morals. It means they are sick and need help.
Trinity Livingston im addicted to Painkillers aswell. I really don’t know how to quit. And youre so right. I started to get addicted wenn i was really in pain, way before the drugs.
Exactly. When your an addict you will literally do anything for money. Absolutely anything just to not feel that pain. Its the worst pain youll ever experience. Its not about wanting the high anymore you just dont wanna be sick. Your body needs it. Thats how it is with hard drugs. I had to skip through a lot of scenes in this movie because it was just too triggering. It reminds me of my old ways. Leo really did an insanely good job with this role
So powerfully captures that his mom wants him to be around, but knows its best to have him taken away by the police. You can feel she loves him, but knows it will be wrong to have him around.
Honestly, it wouldn't be like that for most actors. Intense scenes like this one the actors (good actors at least) really put themselves in that headspace feel what their characters are feeling. Leo was probably emotionally drained and needed some time to 're-charge' after this scene.
I think personaly this is Leo’s best acting. Acting out the emotions of Dread, fear, Pain physically and emotionally, confusion, heartbreak, hatered, attempting to fake emotions to convince his mother whilst simultaneously knowing its pointless and also meaning everything he says is nearly impossible to do in one scene. Its almost a little like trying to complete an entire asignment in one sentence and have it describe and explain 10 different things
I don’t know how I’ve never heard of this movie until now, but holy hell. This performance brought me to tears. I’m shocked he didn’t get an Oscar for this.
God she was crying and holding the money. She just wanted to give him what he asked so bad but choosed what he needed instead of wanted.AND SHE WAS CRYING.suffering with him not like condescending. Best mom ever.
Carla Petcu moms..that go thru this. This is what it really looks like. Coming from the sister that used to hear it from my window....they want to so bad

If you've been through this before (Heroin addiction) then youll inmediately know the realism that both actors in this scene perform is just beyond as real as it gets. This is genuinely, word for word, act by act, exactly what this shit does to people.
Drugs (including Tabbacco, Alcohol, shrooms, weed, benzos, stuff people like to say aren't drugs/aren't harmful or that bad) are all garbage. Stay sober, safe, and above all remember there are people who care or people who you could get to know who would care about you, and if you relapsed there are likely places you can go for help in you're area... There is never a good reason to relapse.

It's so sad. I can completely relate to this. I was a heroin addict, for 4 years, troubled my Mum so much. I went to a rehab center, now I'm sober for 5 months and running. Please Kids don't try drugs it won't only ruined you it always bring disaster to the family as well. 😔😔
Zendaya's performance in Euphoria, specially when she begs her drug dealer to open the door and cries outside of his house, reminded me so much of this scene
Makes me cry, I put my mother through the same thing. Thank God I picked up my 2 year clean chip the 16th of september 2014. Im extremely blessed to have gotten out of that.
In AA and NA meetings all around the world they give out these colorful key tags of inclements of clean time. Mine is black for 2 years. Before that I got a gray one for 18 months of clean time.
Drew banks I KNOW for a fact you can do it. I was one of the worst dope fiends out there and I was on heroin too. I went through it all, including the dope sickness. Just remember one thing tht always inspired me wen I had cravings 1. They will ALWAYS pass. They are like the devil's storm. A fight between yourself and your mind that has gone corrupted. The only way to clean it out to to continue resisting the drug. IT MAKES YOU STRONGER every time you survive through a craving, you get mentally stronger each time. You are literally changing your subconscious mind. 2. Fill your the void in your heart. Find help, dont do it alone. There are lots of places that will help you get clean. No money? They can help you apply for insurance coverage. Put effort in getting your old self back, I promise you, the whole time your riding out the storm of resisting, you will gain self esteem and confidence. 3. Pray to someone. A higher power. Idk what your faith status is but, plz, by all means pray to a higher power to cleanse your mind, soul, and body. Pray for strength when ur feeling weak. 4. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID....past people, places, and, things. 5. Go to meetings, get to know ppl, it REALLY does help, at first I hated the idea of meetings, but believe me, frm experience of a dope addict, they really did fuckin help me have some hope for once in my miserable life. Get some numbers from a support network that are recovering as well. Like a sponsor. Get one, choose one with multiple years clean. And callthem for advice and talk to one thats open minded. Drew, heroin tricks ur mind. It minimizes the painfull memories you've been through and makes u only remember the "fun" times. Remember only the pain you've gone thru. Because those are the ones that will make ur mind realize ur better off without drugs. I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT DREW, CUZ I DID IT !!! I GOT CLEAN OFF OF ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS MIND DESTRYING DRUG OUT THERE. U will get better.
***** I really hope you stuck with it, relapse isn't failure, its just a step on the way to being completely clean.. Personally I shot up 1-2 buns a day for least 5 years. The hardest part is getting through the withdrawals because its so hard to believe that they will ever stop.. For me personally,I moved from NYC right to south Carolina and spent literally three months in a room dying.. Hot/cold, puking, insomnia, mental torture n hallucinations, pain everywhere, stomachs felt like it was being kicked non stop.. Personally I don't believe cold turkey is the way to go. Methadone or suboxen is a much better route to stop the sickness. Doctors only suggest cold turkey because they believe if you suffer more then your less likely to wanna keep doing it, but its wrong.. I have had friends go of and die because they tried cold turkey soooo many times and just couldn't take the withdrawals anymore.. Dr says it takes 3 to 4 days to get through heroin withdrawal, that b.s. after 3 months of being in a room withdrawing and getting worse by the day, I was finally able to get accepted into a methadone program. The minute I took the first dose, the withdrawals n suffering ended and I have been clean over two years now.. My poi t being sometimes cold turkey does more hard than good. I'll never mentally be the same again after 3 months of non stop torturous withdrawal, it haunts me everyday now. I def recommend methadone for heroin users, I havnt even had the urge to use after starting methadone. It gives you your life right back after your first couple doses. I know that everybody is different with treatment and what works, but I truly believe cold turkey from heroin is cruel and unusual punishment when someone goes to a dr for help.. Methadone and moving literally saved my life. I wish you all the luck in the world, itl be hard but anything worth doing usually is. I'm always here if you need to talk or just a question about getting through withdrawal. Withdrawal is the hardest part of recovery.. Expect to relapse, it doesn't mean failure, sometime ppl that relapse try even harder to get clean because that relapse was a reminder how bad the life really is.. The high is amazing, but too many bad repercussions n consequences.. Good kicker brother.I'm praying for you.
I used to do that for alcohol, which is a drug like any other. It was like living in hell. This scene gets me everytime because you become a monster. Thank god I'm 8 years clean and recovered. Groups are a great help also.
I'm so happy for you. My parents were both alcoholic at some time in their lives and it shattered my heart into pieces. Thankfully, they're both sober and healthy now. I know some days are harder than others but never give up on yourself. You can do anything!
+Adrienne Waddell Really Leo deserved this award. With every movie he has every acted in he had made such great impression on millions of fans. From The Basketball Diaries, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, & This Boy's Life and plenty others. Leo is an acting legend and got his award for being what he is an ACTOR.
"When he still had to do some acting" It's tough to imagine an actor who that applies LESS to than Leonardo DiCaprio. he's one of the best and most ambitious actors around, and always has been
There was a time about 20 years ago when he was known for for being a hearththrob, and he took on some roles that were more about how hot he was to the young female demographic than his talent. Thankfully, he's since gone back to acting.
kevnar Fyi "the young female demographic" enjoys good acting as much as anyone else, and they're largely the reason his career took off and he was able to take on more ambitious roles. Enjoying his looks and recognising his talent are not mutually exclusive.
This is true, but you're an exception to a general rule. You appreciate exceptional acting, but that doesn't mean there aren't millions of women out there who couldn't give a shit about acting and just thought he was "SO DAMN HOT OMG OMG OMG!!!" I delete comments like that all day every day from this very video.
Leonardo Dicaprio was dismayed that he became a heartthrob. What roles, post-Titanic, did he take on that were about how hot he was to the young female demographic? I think your timeline may be off. Romeo and Juliet was released two years before Titanic, but it saw a resurgence after Titanic was released. Man In The Iron Mask (horrible movie) was released after Titanic but was filmed before. Those two films are the only things I can imagine you're referring to, and they were done before he became a household name and had the luxury of dictating what movies he appeared in. After Titanic, Dicaprio did not film another movie for two years because he did not know how to deal with the way fans were reacting to him. He wanted to be known as an actor and not a heartthrob. His first film choice, post-Titanic, was a black and white, low budget, arthouse film in which he was fourth billed as part of an ensemble cast. A choice people found inexplicable. The first post-Titanic film he played a leading role in was The Beach, a modestly budgeted film for the era and one that was on the verge of not being made until he came on board because they couldn't get funding after Ethan Hawk left. Contemporaneous cinephiles and critics thought Dicaprio was making a career-damaging mistake by turning down outlandish offers in order to do a film that was anathema to the mainstream success he had stumbled upon. I have to admit, I was one of those film student cinephiles who was baffled by his choices at the time. I thought he was trying to sabotage his own career. I thought, at the time, why wasn't he going the Ben Affleck route? Where was his Armeggedon? The next film after that was yet another black and white, low budget, arthouse film called Don's Blum that debuted at the Berlin Film Festival. It never received a wide release and took in under $7,000 total. After that, he chose to co-star alongside Tom Hanks in Stephen Spielberg's biographical crime film, Catch Me If You Can. A film that was not, in any way, appealing to a young female demographic. After that he did Gangs of New York followed by the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator. By that point, it was the mid-2000's and his 'teen heartthrob status' was well worn and gone. None of those post-Titanic choices, not one, could be construed as pandering to the heartthrob demographic. He fought so hard against that demographic that I started to feel sorry for him because it was clear he had been saddled with a label he did not want. As for young females who only view movies and actors in the most shallow of ways, the same can be said about men. It's not like Michael Bay is known for insights and wisdom. And, while she's actually not a bad actress, nobody fell in love with Angelina Jolie because they were dying for her next Oscar-winning performance.
@Fern Alderton doesn't matter if my parents or teachers taught me that drugs are bad they are just trying to protect me and I watched what drugs can do so I know what they can do. Drugs are drugs and they are bad for your health and your future from ever succeeding.
Being almost 10 yrs sober, I think on what it was like for my parents to have children who were addicts and how hard it was for them to show “tough love”. When I finally ended up behind bars I remember her saying how sad she was to see me there and how she never expected this to be on her daughter’s resume in life but she could sleep easier knowing she wasn’t going to get a phone call in the middle of the night to come and identify my body. Something she had to do with two of my younger siblings a few years later. When in active addiction you have to cut us off because you can’t save us. We will only take until there is nothing left for you to give. I had a lot of friends whose parents would not kick them out and would actually take them to cop and knowingly let them get high in their house. They wouldn’t put them on the street because they were afraid that their children would die out there, but unfortunately, most of those parents were the ones to find their bodies up in their bedrooms. 💔
I'm guessing he has massive amounts of empathy for actual drug addicts, going through the pain and hopelessness at the bottom of their addiction. All great acting is just extreme empathy. He has empathy to the point where their pain makes him cry for real, and he's able to show the audience what that pain is really, honestly like.
Well true acting is actually feeling the emotions of the character your playing, so he was probably genuinely hurt in the moment. Sry I don’t wanna sound like a know it all or anything that’s just what I’ve been taught and is probably how he did this scene.
It’s not too hard, especially if you’re a good actor. What I do is think of some really sad parts of my life and then use that to create tears and then act the rest.
I remember reading an interview about Leonardo DiCaprio, many years ago. And when they asked him how he managed to cry so realistically, he answered : « I try to imagine something horrible happening to my parents ( like burning to death ). » It’s tough, but this scene proves that it works.
Tbh having kids and making a happy family has always been my dream ever since I was kid. But I get so sacred and heartbroken when I think about stuff like this. It's just so scary to think about trying your best to make your children live a good life but they up getting consumed by the world's evil.
Jenna Talia, my son is 14 and he already smokes pot and takes pills! He knows better but still does it with his friends. I'm a single parent and do not do ANY drugs or alcohol or have ever had any negativity around him yet, he chose friends that lead him down a wrong path. He's a good, caring boy but in the end, I can only hope he chooses the right avenues. I show him clips like this and talk to him alot about the dangerous future that lies ahead. The BEST years were birth through about 10 or 11, then he got a disrespectful mind of his own. They're ALL adorable when they're babies THEN, they become teenagers!!
Just imagine being in that situation... Addicted to heroine and other drugs severely to that point, losing a sports career and kicked out of school and in jail while under 18

Great movie, in the end, it shows you what a drug addict's path would be like, killed like that dope dealer, locked in jail like Mark, trapped in the circle like Pedro or going clean like Leo.
he is actually very good looking but i feel like some people are just his fans or like him because of that and kinda makes me mad because he is such a fucking great actor!!
@@jujucas8543 YAS! I'm a really big fan of his, but since i'm young, a lot of people think i'm only into his looks, which is not true at all! I've watched so many movies of his and i'm always very impressed by how amazing his acting is
There's no doubt Leo's character was suffering hugely, but this scene also shows how even in the midst of his agony, he was able to be incredibly manipulative towards his mother. He knew that the cried phrases "mom, I'm in pain", and "I'll be a good boy, just let me in" are like arrows to a mother's heart. She knew she could not give in for his wellbeing, but she almost did because of the pain he was able to transfer to her. And while he was genuinely crying and in pain, he was able to flip from an attempt at being sweet and almost childlike to full on swearing and screaming. Top-notch acting from both Leo and Lorraine Bracco here.
It's manipulation, but he really is in a tremendous amount of pain, and is receeding to childlike attempts to get it, going a few days without heroine, you will never quite understand the hell that is until it has happened to you, imagine this scene again except he is asking for water, he hasn't had anything to drink in 3 days, who would be heartless in that situation, his tears are not crocodile, he is completely humiliated, disgusted with himself for the man he has become, ashamed at how he treats everyone around him, but that only adds to the need for heroine, the absolute physical torture of withdrawal is coupled with the absolute mental torture of how fucked his life is and how fucked he has made everyone else, it's more than any man could ever take, which is why less than 3% of heroine users ever stay truly clean.
I was an addict in a the past, when i was young and stupid. Watching this scene made me bawl my eyes out, it brought back so many painful memories, ugh.
“When he still had to do some acting” No matter if it was pre titanic or not, Leonardo was and still is a great actor, he put in so much amazing work in all the projects he’s ever done, because he’s an amazing actor who is just now getting the recognition he deserves.

His acting as arnie in what’s eating Gilbert grape was most powerful for me
He was so good in What's Eating Gilbert Grape that people actually thought he was autistic until they interviewed him.

It's was "mom I need you to give me like 5- like 20 dollars"
My mom will not even give me two dollars....Then two days later she will give me a purse. But that line really hit me. Even when she called the police. I was just so...what’s that word again...oh... the word is sad.
But also why didn’t his mom give him the money and why did he need it?

Yes. Even when she reached into her purse to get money, and then crying when she hears him calling her a bitch. In the end she did help her boy.
UrBoiDeath_666 well said. Some people don’t get it and judge so hard. Thank u for this 💙💙💙

Its almost a little like trying to complete an entire asignment in one sentence and have it describe and explain 10 different things

Makes me cry, I put my mother through the same thing. Thank God I picked up my 2 year clean chip the 16th of september 2014. Im extremely blessed to have gotten out of that.
whats a clean chip?
In AA and NA meetings all around the world they give out these colorful key tags of inclements of clean time. Mine is black for 2 years. Before that I got a gray one for 18 months of clean time.
Drew banks I KNOW for a fact you can do it. I was one of the worst dope fiends out there and I was on heroin too. I went through it all, including the dope sickness. Just remember one thing tht always inspired me wen I had cravings

"When he still had to do some acting"
It's tough to imagine an actor who that applies LESS to than Leonardo DiCaprio. he's one of the best and most ambitious actors around, and always has been
There was a time about 20 years ago when he was known for for being a hearththrob, and he took on some roles that were more about how hot he was to the young female demographic than his talent.
You appreciate exceptional acting, but that doesn't mean there aren't millions of women out there who couldn't give a shit about acting and just thought he was "SO DAMN HOT OMG OMG OMG!!!"
I delete comments like that all day every day from this very video.
Kevin Klawitter I agree. He’s always been an exceptional actor, heart throb role or not
This will bring tears even to a stone hearted people ✌️.....

No one will deny that his acting is superior. Dang that's extremely convincing
Don't do drugs
Dont Do Kids Too
@Shehk Ali cuz your kids can do drugs
those are WISE words.
Very wise words indeed.
Don’t do drugs. Only smoke weed
How did he cry so realistic
I'm guessing he has massive amounts of empathy for actual drug addicts, going through the pain and hopelessness at the bottom of their addiction. All great acting is just extreme empathy. He has empathy to the point where their pain makes him cry for real, and he's able to show the audience what that pain is really, honestly like.
Well true acting is actually feeling the emotions of the character your playing, so he was probably genuinely hurt in the moment. Sry I don’t wanna sound like a know it all or anything that’s just what I’ve been taught and is probably how he did this scene.
He was crying in real life bruh.
It’s tough, but this scene proves that it works.

Great movie, in the end, it shows you what a drug addict's path would be like, killed like that dope dealer, locked in jail like Mark, trapped in the circle like Pedro or going clean like Leo.
What is the name of this movie??
@@kristenzymiyah9337 the basketball diaries
Thanks for spoiling.
@Damien Trites I didn't even know that this was one of the final scenes. Thanks for spoiling again lmao.
ItzzzMe xx he dies at the end. Dickbutt
*Oscar needs Leo...*
Bts sunshine nice pfp army and yep I agree 💜
Bts sunshine 😂😂 I can’t tell you how long I laughed at this video for 😂

Pft. Oscar doesn’t deserve Leo.
how he hasn't won an Oscar.. shocks me.
me too.
Too bad it wasn't a big budget Hollywood movie. Otherwise he would've been recognized and prob had a nomination.
Its 2018. He got it in 2016, your dream has come true
This movie easily is the best movie to convince kids/teens against drugs. Requiem for a dream doesn’t hold anything against The Basketball Diaries.
If you ever reach this point in your life, that's when you know you've seriously screwed up :/
Buttered Toast I’ve got family exactly like this and I can confirm what you say is 100% truth
Black Burn yeah I would too
I have. It’s a nightmare. Hardest thing I’ve ever done was crawl out of that hole.

@@jujucas8543 YAS! I'm a really big fan of his, but since i'm young, a lot of people think i'm only into his looks, which is not true at all! I've watched so many movies of his and i'm always very impressed by how amazing his acting is
"Mom im in pain" and "I'll be a good boy" hit rlly hard 💔😭
And that's why it's so heartbreaking
It's manipulation, but he really is in a tremendous amount of pain, and is receeding to childlike attempts to get it, going a few days without heroine, you will never quite understand the hell that is until it has happened to you, imagine this scene again except he is asking for water, he hasn't had anything to drink in 3 days, who would be heartless in that situation, his tears are not crocodile, he is completely humiliated, disgusted with himself for the man he has become, ashamed at how he treats everyone around him, but that only adds to the need for heroine, the absolute physical torture of withdrawal is coupled with the absolute mental torture of how fucked his life is and how fucked he has made everyone else, it's more than any man could ever take, which is why less than 3% of heroine users ever stay truly clean.
she made the false accusation of him robbing the house tho lol
We all watched it also.
ever been dopesick? shit hurts like a bitch & will have u just like this, crying, angry, and everything in between
I was an addict in a the past, when i was young and stupid. Watching this scene made me bawl my eyes out, it brought back so many painful memories, ugh.

“When he still had to do some acting”
No matter if it was pre titanic or not, Leonardo was and still is a great actor, he put in so much amazing work in all the projects he’s ever done, because he’s an amazing actor who is just now getting the recognition he deserves.
Let me say that for the billion time … LEONARDO IS THE BEST ACTOR EVER EXISTED IN THE HISTORY
As a long term addict this scene always hits me . Having my parents in the same situation . Begging , crying , pleading for money for dope .
@shane marz are you fucking stupid?
@shane marz what the fuck is wrong with you
shane marz are you dumb?
shane marz you’ve clearly never suffered with an addiction
Danielle Martinez what are you talking about he was dumb since birth

To know there are people actually going through this… my father was one. RIP dad! 😞
Sorry to hear that brother ❤️.
All the best to you

It's heart breaking when I saw her mom calling the police, when she's already picked up some money from her wallet for the sake of her son...
I find DiCaprio's earliest work is his best, like many artists.
I'd say this movie is easily Leo's best acting ever.
+cho lee jack Dawson?
+cho lee true. Definitely. But jack triggered my obsession which I wish I could get rid of but I can't because I'm stuck thinking about Leonardo DiCaprio and jack Dawson so that's why. But Arnie did really show his talent more
