@Chris Liepe
I share two simple steps for getting distortion and grit out of your voice in various places of your range. Enjoy!
You're ignoring the easier solution:
- Distortion Pedal
Haha
Just stick a metal zone or five into your signal chain why don’t ya.
Where do i put the cable though??? 😳😳😳😩
@@nickphaux be sure to use lots of vaseline

One of the best lessons I've seen on this subject, and all in 49 seconds. Awesome!
Glad it was helpful!
@@chrisliepe Chris, what should the starting point be for adding this rasp to G, G#, A4 ? Strong supported belted note? Soft mixed voice ? Feels as if false chords don't want to engage in the same way they do below the bridge
@ Great question... And a common one! It's not something I can answer in a few lines via a UA-cam comment reply, but I do walk through the process of that low, middle mix and distortion in this course: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack/
I do this every time I'm in the restroom
LOL, good one!
Best joke I've heard in a while when it comes to vocalists 😂
I realize that I’ve been adding distortion without realizing sometimes but every time I wanted to intentionally do it I couldn’t figure out how I produced that sound. All along it was this 😅thanks so much!
I Could Never Figure Out (Even With An Instructor) How To Add Distortion To My Voice But This Right Here Saved My Throat So Much, Thanks A Million Man.
I now feel confident to sing with my band. I could never figure out why my voice just didn’t sound “right.” I’m now excited to sing and play with them. I can’t thank you enough
Best thumbnail ever
haha... UA-cam is quirky with how the thumbs work on shorts. I actually uploaded a different one but the original one stuck!!
The tattoo gun when I’m getting a new tattoo
EXCELLENT explanation. You have consistently helped me to add distortion to my voice over the last year. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Chris!
Didn't think this would work so well. Now I can go cover some Halestorm lol 😊💖
I feel like my pitch goes up a half step when I add the whisper, haha. I’ll keep trying though! Thanks for the video!
Thats normal when you're first experimenting... You'll get a handle on it!
I'm the opposite, it's hard to me to add fry on higher notes, on lower notes it's much easier.

Just feels like I'm tearing up my chords every time lol
This is awesome, even a few years into my practicing agressive singing i find i use all these different approaches to grit. This is one i‘ve felt before but sometimes kind of lose track off and its so much less effort for a cool sound. Thanks for this😊
You're so welcome!
this video was super helpful but also I found you switching between the different types of E absolutely hilarious
Wow wtf its the best tutorial i watched
Glad you liked :) !
This shorts are great! Thanks!
Glad you like them!
It's 2:25 AM in my country and i can't practice right now, but i can't wait to try this distortion technique later.
Even the false cords short video was fantastic.
Chris, I learned mixed voice from your videos and now i feel that freedom in singing.
You are a great vocal coach.
Thank you so much!
These shorts are genius
You are my hero
:)
If you ever read this Chris, I can't thank you enough! I was about to give up on learning how to activate my false chords cause nothing seemed to work until I tried this, and suddenly, everything made sense!
So glad it helped!!
Including the bit about feeling two different points of engagement and keeping them separate is incredibly helpful.
Chris, I've been following your videos a while. I'm learning to sing at 30 (VERY slowly haha), and I just want to sincerely thank you for beimg willing to potentially look very silly online with the experimenting excercises, just to help out total strangers. I really appreciate it, and your videos have helped me, a lot. And I'm sure that I'm not the only one, I'm sure that you've helped out so many people here with your time, work, and dedication to all this.
Okay it's pretty logical, but I didn't expect this to work that well, Chris you are best scream unlocker ever
This works perfectly, I used to only be able to do it on a low note but now I can do it on high notes
Omg thank u
Oh shoot i actually did it! Wow, great tip!
You are so helpful. This content is gold.
I'm glad you are enjoying the content!
Woow! What a great voice coach. I learned how to sound raspy in less than a minute.
Wow, just wow!
Did it work for you?
@@chrisliepe yes! You highlighting the separation was so game changing for me!
Listen, I’ve been following Chris for like six years. He is the goat follow his channel learn from him if you want to sing well.
I'd love to see your reaction/analysis of Until I Wake(Self Medication), Architects(Black Lungs) or Caskets(Glass Heart). Keep on making these shorts 'cause they're awesome!
Edit: I just saw that you did a video about Architects xd
Those are some great suggestions!
Very Talented....always learn something great from u, when it comes to using our voice in music, Awesome 💯
Make a video how the weekend make his voice
Yup, just as I thought the last step is the trickiest one
good job
Thank you! Is this the ultimate distortion singing tutorial? D:
this is low key kinda usefull
Excellent! Can you do a short for mix voice? ;)
Thank you!!! This short helped a lot!
Pretty cool I’ll practice it everyday
Works right away
Nice Tutorial 👍 one thing I’d like to add is to never do this loud when your breathing technique isn’t that good and never without a warmup. It can permanently affect your voice
This helped a little! Thanks!
Me looking at this now I'm like what....but also I can't try it right now. I'll have to mess around with it tomorrow in the day time
Glad I found your channel, been taking a lot of notes as I'm trying to nail a certain texture I need for my next recording.
I've been trying to find ideas on adding distortion (or whatever glottal magic it is?) on falsetto, there's definitely not a lot of material on that around but it seems significantly different than when done in the chest register, which is why I find it hard to apply the general theory to falsetto. Sylvester is a great example of what I mean, and the technique is quite essential in funk and soul. Sure Prince did it too, but it's difficult to learn from him because he's got so much high range and the anatomy of his voice is just not like the average guy's. But Sylvester's style sounds approachable and relatable in that it's a rather dark and nagging falsetto in a typical tenor range.
Now that I'm talking about falsetto, besides discovering distortion, another challenge I'm having with it is the low notes: We have the register break at E, but sometimes you have to stretch your chest voice just a bit higher, or your falsetto/head just a bit lower; the high range is easy to achieve, but when you have descending melodies especially going close to or just a bit lower than E, it gets really unstable. Lower falsetto notes seem to require some additional adaptation to position compared to higher falsetto notes to provide support, but I haven't quite identified it yet. Obviously you can't stretch falsetto too low as it has to eventually meet the chest voice, but it's annoying when you've got just that one note of a harmony or whatever that gets very unstable, and you can't just switch to chest voice in the middle of the line because it would make a completely different texture. But yeah my main point is those funky falsetto screams, I haven't managed to find any videos on that yet! Somewhat similar things in metal music still sound quite different because the nagging Bee Gees style falsetto doesn't belong to the genre! I don't know about studio tracks, but I know some Sylvester singles contain a cappella versions. 'Mutual Attraction' for example. (This is generally a video topic idea)
thanks bro
You are slowly rescuing my vocal cords vid by vid❣️😝 Thank you so much ❣️👍
I sound like imma 'bout to poop.
Awesome video Chris!! (As per usual 🤷😁) i feel like when I try this, I'm engaging my false chords. Does that mean I'm doing it wrong?? Is that essentially it? A different technique? Thanks a bunch! 😄
That's exactly right! All vocal distortion involves the false cords if you're doing it right! There's a lot of confusion out there and it's much simpler than people think!
This is how my voice sounds now!!
I'm automaticallly goin in a fry scream while tryin lmao
Hey Chris, sometimes when I try to add distortion it hurts a bit on my soft palete, I'm not sure of what I'm doing wrong or if it's normal
It really doesn't hurt too much, and it doesn't hurt in my throat at all
It's normal when you're dialing it in, but I can help you find the exact points of engagement so that it never hurts or causes tickles etc...
@@chrisliepe Not to steal someone else's post/comment, but how do we schedule private lessons with you? I haven't seen anything except for it except for your free voice lessons and videos on here
Thanks a lot! 😊 Is there something I can do when I start to cough?

sounds like what Alex Brightman does for his Beetlejuice voice in the Beetlejuice musical :) (ventricular fold phonation - using the falso folds)

I ended up doing something called polyphonic singing instead, I accidentally sang multiple notes at the same time thanks I think 😂🤷

Trying to learn distortion so I can sing that badass breakdown in H by tool
That thumbnail tho 😂
How about adding it above G#4? How does it change whlle you're mixing ?
man when i try to do the distortion part i always sound like cookie monster😂😅...and i just give up because i cant stop laughing at myself

Sweet. Replying to come back
I can’t do this without my throat hurting after. Does it just take practice?
I think I couldn't understand how to do that whisper... so sad
It can take some time to figure out how to place it! Check out some of my other longer UA-cam videos... I show a lot more how to do things :)
Doing that raspy part and loosing distortion.
I just sound like Trunks from dbz whenever i do that
i add high voice and this distortion and i can sing linkin park songs thanks!
I have a problems to do this loud whisper - the feeling is like everything there is closed and literally cant do any noise, no air comming out. Do you have some excercises for whisper? I have rather low voice - is that matters?
Thanks!
how long per day, per week to practice this? How often? What's the routine?
Practicing vocals doesn't work with that kind of "checkbox" way of working. You should practice it as long and as often as you can fully give yourself to the sensations you discover and learn to play with. Don't time it. Don't be disciplined with it. Be curious and experimental. Do it all the time, in short bursts til you get things feeling good, then sing parts of songs til you get tired. Rest when you your body tells you need to... Push when you feel like you can!! Try this video for more inspiration: ua-cam.com/video/oWkYoLnMOSM/v-deo.html
@@chrisliepe so i have a song in where i can see myself singing with distortion/scream/shouting it, but I'm unable to do it. Kind of have mental block on it too. Was wondering, do I start low then work my way up getting in tune with the notes? Could I ask your advice on it?
What do i do if it starts to feel scratchy and painful in the back of my throat?
I sound like im dieing

My voice always seems to dry out within an hour regardless of me drinking water. Is this going to permanently damage my voice?
Not at all... as long as you listen to your body and don't overdo your practice sessions :) When you're practicing this stuff, sometimes 5 minutes a day is great!
@@chrisliepe Thank you Chris!
I cant go higher than +-F note. Is it okay?
Yeah! Especially if you’re just starting out! Give yourself some grace and time. You’ll be able to feel out the sensations necessary to reach higher notes.
@@chrisliepe got it thanks
i cant seem to make the distortion feel comfortable. Is it coming from the false cords
I just become muscle man broOoOo
I think I KINDA got the distortion, but it's placed really low in my throat and hurts. How to move it up, to the soft palate?
There are exercises and ways you can direct your mind to engage higher. I go over all the ones that work for me here: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack
I can't even begin to do it without coughing, gagging or the back of my throat burning
You might need to start here: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack
Well, that hurt.
keep trying in short spurts!
I still can't do it 😢
The loud whisper just hurts my throat tho 😭
Another useful learning tool for this technique is eating so much fast food you get shit cramps
yes totally!
I can add distortion by doing this but I can't seem to do it without causing a sharp pain to my throat 😩
That hurts my throat, is that normal? Or am I doing it wrong? It's energy consuming isn't it? And you go out of breath easily.
I can't add that wisper sound on the clean E
It give burning sensation in my vocal cord
aM i doing it right or correct me if im foing it wrong

I can get the distortion in my chest voice and my head voice, but not my mixed voice (it keeps trying to flip up into head voice in order to get distortion). Is there anything in particular I should focus on when trying this in mixed voice?
focus on dying cat/twang/tilt... These coordinations and sounds with compression will help you. If you want me to guide you through... check out my Mixed Voice Method and Madness course at mymusicalvoice.com! :)
@@chrisliepe Gotcha. Checking that out now. So I shouldn't be trying to get the "lifting something heavy" or "old man voice" feeling in a mix? The twang sound is what compression feels like in that register?
What do I do wrong if this makes my throat dry after two minutes? Too much air?
Absolutely, too much air! You might be ready for this: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack
I can't do this, when i try to mix them i get false chord grolw
i can't get it to sound right :( either i just exhale too much air or it sounds gargly
I cant do this “loud whisper” in low notes, it starts to hurt, is it normal?
is this safe to do?
YES!
Is this going to hurt a bit?
when you're dialing it in, it might be uncomfortable, but stick with it in short spurts until you feel the sensation high in your throat! I can help you more with this inside my course! www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack
I know the explanation was really good, but I still couldn't get it. I feel like my singing voice goes up to join the raspy voice and it hurts when I repeat a couple times. 😅😅
Take some time off... be patient, and practice in very short increments... Don't expect it to come quickly... Be willing to fail as you continue to feel out the sensations!
@@chrisliepe Thank you.. 😊😊
