Excuse me mister @chrislipe I need to ask you a question. So as a kid in middle school I could do this thing I called the eagle cry because It sounded like a bird, and could summon birds. Ok so imagine a firework I could do that. But I'm a bass 2.
I lost it in around 2019.
And that's like when my voice was at it's deepest.
So I've have always wanted to get it back. I trained for years. Singing Jacob Collier songs for hours on end. And my voice can now reach like a low soprano or something.
Look up every time we say good by Jacob Collier live. That's the highest I can sing safely but I can go a tad higher.
But I still can't get that high screech whistle thing.
I also realized lately I also can't whistle too good anymore.
This has been my goal for like 5 to 6 years. And I can sing basically anything.
But I still can't do the one thing that was mine. A literal copy of a hawk.
Could I ask you if you know or could help and or make a video on it.
I wasn't inhaling I was exhaling. And I think my larynx did something, I can still make the shape in my throat but there's no sound.
I'm watching your video on whistle tones. And my eagle cry is a mix between that inhale screech and the whistle.
Please if you see this could you help. It's the one thing I've wanted to be able to do ever since the day I realized I couldn't any longer. It's like the moment I tried my throat forced it self down and then I couldn't. Like it felt like I was gonna choke on my voice box.
Don't read into that too much it was years ago so I'm probably imprinting how it currently feels on that memory.
Not spam just making sure you have a high probability to see it

It's just so weird. I just tried to hum a kinda high note. But not only can I not visualize it but I can't even come close to singing it. There is a titanium wall there. That is the wall I could easily slipp under to get my crazy whistle note but now when I try it's like my voice is just pushing right back down with the same force if not more

I think the most counter intuitive for learners is related to 2nd check. When we listen to brutal grit it feels like the singer is pushing hard and singing louder, when in fact it's the total opposite. That's something hard to catch without a professor to show you

i find that i can activate the false chord / voice break scream easier but with the compression i notice a kinda warmth/friction in my throat. It definitely feels higher than vocal chords and doesnt affect my talking voice so maybe it's easing into that a bit more and finding the sweet spot? also was helpful to hear you make those croaky husky noises to demonstrate where in ur throat it is happening

What's up, Chris. Thanks again for being cool with Jonny Craig.
I know you're a Soundgarden, Alice in Chains inspired style, and even though it wasn't my primary scene (though they do have some jams fo sho), the explanation on this one was done really well. I especially like when an actual sound comparison is done and we get to see (interpreted as decibel change) the difference in what proper vocal distortion is over just yelling the shit out of it.
Hope to see y'all collaborating again down the line and cool explanation.

as someone who has never done an unclean in their life, i always struggle adding distortion with my false cords. because it tickles! I'm not sure if that means I'm going something incorrect, but I'm a trained vocalist so I think I'm targeting the right area. the tickling always ends my practice session early lol.

I'm pretty sure I've been using too much force or projecting too much, I noticed if I change my placements I can get the same grit and distortion in a different area. It's also way less tiring and easier to sing longer periods without losing steam. Why did I always think I needed to use so much force? Is this a normal misunderstanding when singing?

Hey Chris, I started singing a Lamb of God cover band, when I'm warming up my voice I feel a tickle, a slight discomfort, in my throat, it doesn't hurt or anything like that, so I just clear my throat and the feeling goes away, after I'm warmed up I don't feel that sensation anymore, is it something common in harsh vocals or will it disappear over time?
By the way, my warm-up is the warm-up course with you, Will and Elizabeth xD

i think i accidentally moved into the bad way of grit and distortion. i used to be able to scream really easily and painlessly. even Chester's 17 second scream from "Given Up" came relatively easy to me.
but for the last couple of months, screaming has left me slightly hoarse and with some sore muscles. even my clean mixed voice has been difficult to maintain recently.
it makes me both sad and a little angry, because i can no longer sing along to my favorite songs.
