When I went to the yard bird mall appreance they also had a huge collection of all the firearms you have seen in some of there videos as well as some others that are just mechanically cool or there will be a presentation about later. I wonder if Paul ever uses his long-windedness to get himself out of trouble? Like:
Paul's Wife: PAUL...Did you spend all of our vacation money on guns again?!
Paul: Unfortunately, the answer to this comes with a litany of disclaimers and caveats, all of which are completely necessary. Now in answering this question I'm going to have to talk about something that I have great DISDAIN for talking about--Myself. With that in mind, nothing I'm about to say should in anyway be construed as advice on how you should spend YOUR vacation money. I'm only telling you how I spend it. Secondly, remember that everything I say here today are just my opinions. My opinions are based on my training, my education, my experience. Different people have difference experiences so they have different opinions. Okay, with that, let me give you a personal anecdote...

Yellow Jackets used to be my favorite, that big hollow would "blow stuff up", even better than Stingers. It seems to have been downloaded quite a bit from the 1980s, as many centerfire pistol/revolver ammo is now. As for quality, older rimfire ammo seems to have been more reliable as well. On a recent range trip I shot some 40+ year old Rem Mohawk 22lr and some less than 5 year old Federal and Winchester ammo. Only a small sample, about 100 rounds each, but 40 year old stuff had 0 misfire/duds whereas the newer stuff had about 3% fail rate.

Stingers from a 4"-6" handgun far exceeds ye olde hollow point LR. If some critter needs putting down then Stinger gets the job. I've tried other brands of "high performance" 22LR and none have the accuracy or destructive power of Stingers.

Strictly my opinion with nothing to back it up, but. When visiting the L.A. county coroners office one day they had an intended target on their stainless steel table. It had been hit with a couple of .22s. The target was terminated not by any expansion, but by the ricocheting of the projectile inside like a billiard ball hitting the sides of the table as bones were struck. The eventual exit was far away from the entrance. Its travels punctured internal named items causing loss of blood and eventually termination. Over time I also learned that the .22 and .22 Mag can be very deadly, 10-20 minutes after the target was hit. One particular case was a single center mass puncture at close range. Target made it out of the house and into a waiting car, but was later left lifeless at some emergency room doorstep by the target's accomplices trying to get it there in time. Another was on a bus with a .22 Mag derringer and 11-15 minutes.
My takeaway is forget about asking the .22 to expand like larger calibers, but ask how much internal billiard table action will it produce cutting through internal stuff. My guess is that is why Federal chose that particular projectile profile.

CCI doesn't call themselves the "leader in rimfire ammunition" for nothing. Virtually all of the world's 22 mag/17 hmr and hyper-velocity 22 lr (extended length Stinger case) is made by them. No other brand has invested as much in the rimfire ammunition market and as a result they've excelled in a market that's little more than an afterthought to other manufacturers. Hopefully Remington's reputation for making inferior rimfire ammo might now start to improve.

Thank you - my wife has a Walther PPK .22 long as her purse gun so I'm always looking at .22 self defense ammo.

FYI: I stopped squirrel hunting with the Stingers because they tore the meat up! In fact a head shot completely removed the squirrels head from its body!
I now use Federal Target ammo
Not only does it not tear up the squirrel my accuracy has Greatly improved on longer shots through my Magnum Research Rifle!

Different barrels have different preferences of course but after extensive research both my Sako and my Anschutz shot at their best with target type ammo of modest velocity. Eley subsonic are what I hunt with. I use a moderator and shoot a rabbit after rabbit without spooking them. Absolutely none of the high velocity stuff (I remember trying Stingers and Eley high velocity for example) shot such tiny groups. I suppose if I really needed higher energy I’d use them but I prefer accuracy and quietness. Cheers from the UK.

When projectiles transition from supersonic, to subsonic, it can create a substantial amount of turbulence and harm accuracy, so long range shots with a 22lr are a little easier with a subsonic round. ( I'm saying this is in addition to firearm / barrel differences, of course )

@@brian_sipe you’re quite right of course. It seemed odd to me that even at 50 m the high velocity ammo ( still healthily supersonic) wouldn’t group as small as the subsonic stuff. I don’t know why this should be the case - all I can guess at is that subsonic.22lr cartridges might be very closely related to target ammunition by the same makers and therefore has had a lot of R and D money invested in consistency/accuracy but that’s a guess and there may be purely ballistic factors at work.
To use Mr. Harrell’s favourite latin word - another caveat during testing .22lr for accuracy is the need to let the barrel settle down to the new ammo. The lining of lubrication wax and combustion products is going to change by ammo brand and velocity. When I put my first wax covered Eley subsonic through a freshly cleaned barrel it is consistently two inches off on the vertical axis at 50 meters and takes a 5 or 10 shots to settle back to zero and consistency. The .22lr is such a valuable practise weapon not leat because it’s so hard to be accurate with. I can always get better groups with a good quality .243 or 6.5x55 even on a windless day. With best wishes.

It’s strange that a shot barrel shoots more true than a clean barrel ?
I stopped cleaning my rifle until after hunting season closes but then I will put a box of 50 down range and then it’s back to 0 !
Is the fowling creating a better seat for the bullet to be stable as it leaves the barrel?
Maybe Paul could shed some light on this?

Go put a center fire hand gun on lay a way! A .22 is better than nothing, but it's not sufficient to kill BEFORE the bad guy kills you...
Get at least a .380 it's still kinda small. A .40 or larger probably where you want to be, for personal defense.

I also keep a 22lr revolver for home defense. 22lr revolvers can also be fussy about ammo, so do some testing on your own. Mine do not like Stingers, poor accuracy and lots of spray from the cylinder gap. They love the Yellow Jackets but I haven't seen them in my area for years. My primary which is a Taurus 94 (9 shot, 4inch double action) actually shots the best with plain old Federal Lightning a 40gr lrn high velocity. Try out the different types that are availible to you and pick what you like best. Good luck. 22lr=shot placement is paramount....
