I'm a retired paramedic. I've treated some nasty and fatal wounds from 22 LR. Shot placement is the key. I would be confident carrying a 22 LR for personal defense. Although, for home defense, there are few things that devastate the human body like a close range shotgun blast. Those are the calls I wish I could forget.

Anyone remember .22 Short “Rockets?” They were, as I recall, 28 grain plastic bullets. It was advertised as frangible and would break up upon impact. I loaded up my .22 rifle, aimed at a 2 x 4 25 yards away and launched several of the little plastic rockets. They were as loud as .22 Long Rifle and seemed quite fast. I walked down to the 2 x 4 and was stunned. All three had zipped right through the 2 x4s! Later I read that the muzzle velocity was approximately 1600 feet per second.

I bet these would be pretty unimpressive out of a rifle compared to the real fast Aguilas, Stingers, etc. since they’re optimized for little short barrels and fire such light bullets. Those other rounds are designed for rifle barrels and use heavier bullets, that’s why Stingers and stuff are pretty terrible in pistols, they burn very little of their powder in that tiny barrel, but in a rifle they can burn it all. There wouldn’t (or at least shouldn’t) be nearly the long-barrel advantage to something specifically tailored to short barrels.

Today, I have three .22 firearms: an S&W M&P 15-22, a Walther P22, and a Charter Arms Pathfinder Lite that I have had loaded up with Stingers - until I ran across these .22 Punch rounds. Just reviewing the ballistics, without actually shooting any, I went and bought five boxes. Having these reviews really helps with evaluating new gear . . . so, thanks for putting in the time and effort for everyone - we're all the wiser because of it.

My philosophy with self defense carry is you have to be quick and accurate. And those two things come with practice and being comfortable with a gun. But another big difference is that someone with a .357 mag may only need one shot to down someone, but that's good because they probably only can get off one accurate shot. With a .22 you can get of a dozen shots in rapid succession and be on target. Plus they tend to be much smaller and easier conceal carry weapons compared to even compact 9s and 45s

You do know the stinger only reaches 1,600 feet per second only when it’s shot through a 16 inch rifle barrel...right? Your 1911 clone in .22LR is probably shooting only about 900-1000/second. Trust me, if Speer/CCI knew that an extra 1/8 inch cavity made any ballistic improvements, they would gladly like to sell you less lead from that bentz chambered 32 grain cartridge. Also, I won’t confuse you with the chambering misfitting people are doing everyday by shooting that long Stinger casing in a regular 22LR chamber. Those rounds are so inaccurate compared to standard velocity lead rounds.

My take on .22LR for self defense is that there is no other round you can shoot on target as fast as .22. Centerfire rounds, especially out of a pistol, take concentration and careful pacing, something that will be hard to do when your life is being threatened suddenly and at close range. IMO, light em up with .22 and that will get the job done. The first hit should throw them off enough to hurt their own ability to shoot, then you finish them off with the rest of the 9 or so rounds in the mag. Much better than missing once or twice with a larger caliber and then it's too late.

I actually couldn't load the magazine properly since they kept going into rim lock. Under a magnifying lens you can see the rim of the 22LR Punch is circular, versus rounded corners like most else. With regards to carrying a .22 pistol; An old friend who worked for a popular ammo manufacturer explained it well. Because the gunpowder comes in direct contact with the primer powder, it acts like sandpaper over time wearing away the primer powder while you are moving about (pocket carry). That doesn’t happen to center fire ammo because the primer powder is encapsulated in the primer.

I think they might be on to something with the flat nose bullet. IIRC, a wider-nosed bullet of the same caliber will deposit more energy, so it seems like this is acting as a great combination of maximum expansion and penetration out of a small gun. Definitely BOTH things that .22LR needs. This might be a winner. I suspect they're also using REALLY fast-burning powder in these loads?

Pretty cool to see rimfire finally getting more love from bullet designers after all these years. Over the decades whenever the conversation comes up about using a rimfire for self defense the way I always see it is that sure, a heavier caliber can hit harder and cause more damage. But as I see it, if a vital organ is hit with a bullet that causes damage then said organ has a difficult time working. It doesn't matter if the damage is a smaller wound cavity from a rimfire or a larger one from a heavier round. Either way, the organ is in danger of failing. Same for blood loss too. A hole in an artery is a hole. And while it's very possible to get very good at rapid mag dumps with a 9 or .45 it doesn't take as much muscle mass to pump out a bunch of rimfires so anyone can do it. And with very light recoil they can also stay on target far easier and print a better group.
I'd always ask people if they'd like the idea of bird shot penetrating their heart or aorta......so if bird shot gives a person pause, then a little .22HP round....well, I rest my case :D

The nickel coating is attractive to those who want a stash of good ammo for survival and bug out bags. I'd like to see results of weathering and torture test of this ammo in different environments. However finding a good revolver with decent trigger or affordable reliable viable carry semi Auto was next to impossible here in Minnesota 2-3yrs ago. There are now low cost good quality advantages available to those of us who have learned Federal Punch in .22lr is no joke, actually far from it!
Kel-Tek makes a now on sale $179 p17 that runs it flawlessly, very accurately with great features. Sting-Gers or Stang-Gers(now $13 per 100 thankfully)run flawlessly too, 😉

I agree that the CCI line is excellent. Federal used to make 'Spitfire' .22 hyper velocity ( packaged in a snuff can in the 1980s) they were fantastic as well (I used them for hunting squirrels). anyhow ,with the shortage of ammo my daughter has been shooting Agulia for her league shooting, has been really happy with the results (Eley primer) - give them a try.

People go on and on about how unreliable .22LR is, but the more data I see on it the more I see it as a non-issue with a modern gun with modern QUALITY ammo. Modern .22LR isn't your grandpa's crappy old .22, manufacturing and gunpowder has come a long way.
Most people that seem to have problems are firing a worn out gun that has shot more in a weekend than a centerfire they own will shoot in its life and are buying the cheapest bulk ammo they can find that may not even be the right spec for the gun their shooting (semi-auto needs jacketed high velocity, not bare lead or low velocity/subsonic). I watched a 3 gun competition the other day where fancy schmancy centerfire race pistols were stove piping and having other issues, no gun is perfectly reliable and .22LR gets an unfair bad rap.

My first choice for a carry gun is a .22lr, and has been for many years. For
reasons: 1. Much more practice. 22’s are fun to shoot with negligible recoil. 2. Ammo is cheap thus encouraging practice. 3. More likely to have shots on target. Again, because of practice and low recoil. 4. In a defensive situation, don’t want to be spraying the local neighborhood with heavy caliber ammo. Again, back to practice and shots on target. However, for home defense I use a .45 ACP 1911. If someone breaks into my home, I know he means to do me and my family harm and I don’t care if I hit the stove, as long as the perp gets a painful message. The intruder will definitely regret being hit by a .45 bullet. Good video.

I heard something similar from a trauma NP guy. He said most shot w/ .22 died. But that was 20+ years ago. Soft body armor is pretty common now on bad guys so if you are using .22 (or most other pistol calibers) you will need to shoot around it.
I knew a kid in high school who shot a .22 (I don't know what type of gun) in his hotel room and the round went through the wall and killed a guy in the next room.
