Richard Dawson did FANTASTICALLY in this movie. Although I was really surprised to see Dawson playing a villain. Still, the fact he did so many Family Feud references in this is what made him so good!
Best Role was Hogans Heroes as Newkirk
The original choice was Chuck Woolery, but I think the movie would have flopped with Chuck Woolery as Damon Killian, but I would have loved to have seen Chuck Woolery take on Arnold Schwarzenegger, but oh well
Dawson giving the old lady a kiss on the cheek and home version of the Running Man game is a comedic gold homage to his Family Feud years.
Of all the classic game show hosts of the '80s, only Richard Dawson could have pulled this role off.
and he says “no tongues” 🤣
@@wintersun398 Oh and the infamous "Whats a matter? Roids make you deaf?"
Is Killian learned about future and the game he learned about games shows and he learned about future and is he an fantasy 😇 learned?
Is Killian being fantasy about the running man and learning about games and sports and televisions?
R.I.P Richard Dawson 1932-2012.
Lol no 1986
Ahhh the 80's, when stuff just randomly exploded into huge fireballs for no apparent reason.
Lol true
The reason...is because it's awesome. And I'm happy with that.
Still 100 times better than the bs movies made today!!
@@jeffreyval9665 Today's action films are a joke. 80s action films was bone crunching violent with some great one liners. Especially from Arnold
@@leejohnstone4663 everything today pretty much sucks!!
“You look pissed, Ben.”
Well, THAT’S the understatement of the year.
0:01
Ben’s silence as he sets up the sled speaks volumes…
"Americans love television. They wean their kids on it."
Truth in advertising
You know what’s funny the villain was telling the truth at the end of the movie!
their version of the truth anyway. would they show different things, after generations even society like american (or chinese, arabic, african or asian) would change, reflecting the subliminal messages that TV airing them for so many years...
It's true everything he said is true the TV 📺 is the most addictive thing if people can't see that well I really don't know what to tell you? I stopped watching television when I was 17 years old because I knew it would brainwashed your mind. It's true good thing's come from it but also bad thing's as well it corrupts the heart's and mind of the youth children as they grow up however people will not believe it or even care? Just imagine only a few people see the truth and the rest of them call you name's and saying he's just a conspiracy theorist a loser and to be shame upon. But hay it's just me a person that just thinks before I leap?
@@ApocGuy Romans did do this (Gladiators, beast and christians in the Coliseum), Alfonso Videla gave the Argentines the World Cup 1979 and many other examples of how society is numb
@@martincito1977 You should see "The New Gladiators" (AKA: "Warriors in the Year 2072"), an Italian film from 1983 from which "The Running Man" (STILL one of my favorite films), HEAVILY borrowed! This is a much better film, but it was definitely much more similar to THAT movie than to the original Stephen King (as Richard Bachman) short story / novella (which pre-dated *both* films). There are clear parallels between that and "The Running Man," which are more than obvious when you see it. One interesting point of note, though, is that "The New Gladiators" managed to keep the Killian role as three separate characters, similar to the original Stephen King work (ie: the Killian role played by Dawson was actually three separate characters combined into one). 👍
Man, Schwarzenegger and Dawson were just awesome in this flick. Here, Ben Richards is giving Damon Killian the "Death Glare" for about the first minute. And Dawson is playing Killian with excellent charm.
Schwarzenegger never kills a villian without saying something funny I love that!!
"That's entertainment!"
It has to do with the ratings 🤷♀️
@@RangaTurk Now, that would have been a better line!
@@mariopalos9238 Thanks for your comment Mario. I'm not sure if having the word "now" in front makes it better or not.

"Hi, cutie pie." The 80s, when Arnold always won amd had the best comeback lines.
So freaky that this movie actually told the future.
This film was ahead of its time. A dark twisted take on reality TV long before The Hunger Games movies.
the message was america/west are brainwashed capitalist slaves of corrupt western media
Its based on a novel by Stephen King.

80s action movies and cheesy one-liners...doesn't get any better!
Apparently, Schwarzenegger didn't like this movie very much. But I gotta say, some of my favorite one-liners from him are from this movie.
It was made the same year as Predator. I think this is a far better film than Predator. Different sub-genre, but still superior film and entertainment.
@@thelstanedwardsson4374 i don’t like it better than predator. But i don’t think there’s as much separation as their reception would suggest. Running man is an extremely underrated 80’s action movie.
@@danielward8645 Fair shout
because the director was made for teevee shows, not for Hollywood feature films
He had done Predator the same year so by this movie he was was pretty tired he just wanted to have a break
This Is 1 Movie That Doesn't Need To Be Remade!!!! It's Perfect Just Like It Is!!!
Give them time. Guaranteed some movie production company running low on funds and new ideas will try to do just that!
Heard there's a remake that is in the works, expected to be released next year
0:43 “we’re number one Ben, that’s all that counts”
2:02 Well that hit the spot.
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just love Cadre cola!
Other than dying at the end, that looks like a pretty fun ride.
What a way to go!
In universe, it's actually not designed that way. There's arrestor netting that brings the sleds to a rather abrupt stop.
But in this final scene, since they aren't going to be sending any more runners into the game zone, that netting isn't there.
Which actually is not entirely unrealistic: they would need to either be repairing the netting for next time, or (more likely) waiting for the next scheduled episode to rig new netting.
And that's why there's no arrestor net set up when Richards sends Killian into the game zone.
@@ToABrighterFuture How refreshingly thorough!
@@InformationIsTheEdge Thaks. I try.
SOMEONE has to, after all. The internet may have made all kinds of knowledge more accessible, but it does seem to have made communication focus on brevity and emotion, at the expense of nuance and reflection.
The results have not been pretty. Even though this version of The Running Man now counts as alternative history, I do worry sometimes that if we don't heed its cautions, it may still become our future yet.
@@ToABrighterFuture Lamentably, I agree that there has not been a corresponding increase in communication efficacy commensurate with the increased availability of information. Though in secret I'm hoping that it only appears so because of the higher value on time rather than on nuance. Your laudable example is a proper nod in the right direction.
Those were the days of the action movies!! The 80‘s were freaking awesome!!
Plot twist;
Killian actually survived this, and ended up on a run of the mill American family quiz show, that never took off.
"They survive this" *ding*
Col Hogan came with the rest of the gang to rescue him
In the fanfiction I've read about Running Man, Killian *does* survive. Google the phrase, "Erotic fanfiction about Richard Dawson" to find the stories, they're great!
These 80s sci-fi movies used to scare me shitless as a kid and this one was no exception! They had a very dystopic and nightmarish feeling to them that I just can't seem to find it today (Blade Runner 2049 got close). Running Man wasn't an extreme hit but still is one of Arnold's most entertaining flicks for sure.
Same here, I second this motion concerning 80s sci-fi as a kid
80s films captured an aesthetic and a satirized reality in a way that no films have since.
It's not a sci-fi.
It's a poor adaptation of Richard Bachman's (nee Steven King) horror story about bread and circuses in America.
@@stateofopportunity1286 Absolutely!

In the German dubbed version at the beginning of the show Killian asks Arnie before starting the run: "Are you ready?"
And in this scene Arnie repeats it towards Killian... 😂
Great ending to a great movie.

Apparently behind that billboard is where they keep all their nitro glycerine!
They had to store it some where
Many reviewers had bad things to say about this movie... but they pretty much all raved about Richard Dawson's evil game show host.
I was always sad they never made that drop-chute into a amusement park ride... would have been awesome :D
I know, right? People would pay good money for a ride like that. 🤑
I’d buy that for a dollar!
You know, I regret all those times when I was a kid...Before going down a waterslide, I should have said to the lifeguard, "I'll be back!"
@@konstantinkoverchenko9587 smash tv!
Best thing about this Dawson isn't acting. He's smarmy like that in real life.
What's funny about this scene was in real life he was a loveable host of a harmless family game show. LOL
He wasn't always quite so loveable and the world of high profile gameshow TV probably wasn't harmless behind the scenes, so IMO this was a perfect parody of that. And while it was great of him to spoof himself in such a dark and cynical way and quite brave, his most lucrative careers days were probably behind him at this point while this movie surely made him a ton of money and possibly future roles, so money was likely a motive for him doing it. I'm still glad he did, because he is a great villain and this was a good film, despite being very unsubtle and cheesy in places.
And he was an actor before he was a game show host. Dawson had a long career.
Actually, during the later years of Dawson’s run on Family Feud, Dawson’s ego grew to intolerable levels. Although we saw the same witty, humorous Dawson on camera, off camera he was a completely different person. He clashed with the producers and even had one of his daughters replace a producer. Ultimately, he made a public apology on air for his actions offstage on his last episode of Family Feud in 1985. There was a story done on E! on Family Feud and it covered mainly the Dawson and Combs eras
Well that hit the spot!
Also.....
"I don't do requests"
This was one of his better films next to Predator.
Fun fact: The game show host in the book by Stephen King name is “Dan Killian” and happens to be African-American.
If they ever remake this movie, Steve Harvey should play Killian.
Edgar Wright's remake has now escaped development hell. Glen Powell will play Ben Richards and the script will be written by Michael Bacall. Still no word on, who will play Dan Killian, but Steve Harvey is a great choice.
[Killian»] "Drop dead!"
[Ben»] "I don't do requests."
(Turnabout is fair play.)
Well that hit the spot
Remember when signs would just randomly explode. It was a bad time for sign makers.
Richard Dawson also played the part of Corporal Peter Newkirk on Hogan's Heroes.
Restless heart running away from you what a movie.
With proper safety systems that would make for an awesome amusement park ride.
So much cheese but God dam it's like the best mozzarella ever 😂👍🏻
Ben was just mad that Killian didn't give him a kiss like the other contestants.

First Chuck Woolery was supposed to play Damon Killian, but was busy with Love Connection and Scrabble and then Burt Reynolds was offered the role of Killian but turned it down due to refusing to be billed last, I would've loved to have seen Burt Reynolds take on Arnold Schwarzenegger as well as Chuck Woolery taking on Schwarzenegger as well.
The music in this movie was fantastic
Sled into cardboard = explosion
I always loved this movie when I was a kid but fell in love with the end song Restless Heart by John Parr. St Elmo's Fire another John Parr classic song to the 80s brat pack movie St Elmo's Fire. x

Note to self: if you mess with Arnold, you get terminated.
But the host of this show is right in every word.
Unfortunately, I realized this too late. When I was a child, I was sincerely indignant - how can he say such things about the USA?
Ben won't find out for 20 more years

Even if you read the book, you'd still wonder if the movie was based on it. About the only thing they have in common is there's a murderous game show. Even the game shows themselves are formatted different. The movie uses an arena, while the book uses more of a fugitive scenario.
In the book, Richards is an average sized everyman with no military or combat training who goes on the show willingly to raise money for his wife and ill daughter. The game “zones” are not limited to a certain part of Los Angeles, but rather the entire country. Contestants get a 12 hour head start and then the “Hunters” are sent out to kill them. Runners win money for every hour they stay alive, avoid being captured, killing law enforcement or Hunters and win billions if they last 30 days. The general public and people watching the show can win money if they spot Runners and report their location to the network. Runners have to record themselves every 24 hours and send it to the network or they forfeit the money and get hunted down anyways until they’re dead.
