  • The BIGGEST Flops in the Watch Industry - Federico Talks Watches
In this episode of Federico Talks Watches I discuss what I think are the biggest flops in the modern watch industry. Not necessarily timepieces, even though things like the Rolex Prince makes an appearance. But did you know that Ulysses Nardin made a smartphone or that Panerai had a partnership with Ferrari? Easy to say the products on this list didn't do well.

I could see buying a Prince someday. Really like the art deco like design, a real conversation piece, and quite elegant IMHO.

That Prince is the best looking Rolex I have seen. But I suppose they are prisoners of their brand image.

I'm surprised to hear that Hublot made a watch that was too big and too gaudy even for their clientele.

Bacchus Leto ...it's actually not even that bad, a relative somehow picked up a pretty decent replica in turkey last year and gifted it to me. I'm not a fan of replicas at all, so I only wore it like 3 times but i got used to it pretty quickly even though i usually wear nothing over 42mm...

Very interesting video Federico. In business, you learn a lot from failures, and Im sure these various brands gained a lot of insight from their flops. The Ulysse Nardin phone is grotesque in both looks, price, features, ongoing cost of ownership, etc----no idea what they were thinking.

It's a strange cycle, but very real amoungst watch collectors, start out buying Rolex simply due to brand status, slowly flip and reduce them out of the collection, then Rolex start filtering back into the collection due to an appreciation of fantastic engineering, robustness, and just a great quality watch to own.

AFAIK, Rolex Prince was originally a doctor's watch (due to the separate seconds dial, for measuring pulse) in the 1930's or something around that time.

  • @timgraley2198

I remember seeing an article in Watch Time regarding the UN smart phone. Calling it a flop is an understatement. I was unaware of the Rolex Prince, and I can see why it is so appealing. To have such a unique Rolex in a collection, it is nice to find another WIS who loves the tonneau shape as I do. I am still looking for the right one for my collection.
Great video, and keep up the good work!

A classic mistake when manufactures unintentionally dilute their brand name by overrating the power of the same. Omega's moon series went the same way, today a second hand "dark side of the moon" model is hardly worth a fraction of its retail price. Good vid Federico (y)

I like the VC Quai de I'lle it looks like a modern more durable Patek G6000-001. It has an in house movement seal of Geneva. like the AP Royal Oak Diver with the new in house movement. For the price the ROO Diver and Quai de I'lle are a cool collection for daily wear and being a bit different.

Hi Federico. Nice show. I'm kind of new to all this but I'm loving it. Just wanna give a tip for your videos. For me as a new member of this community is really hard to understand the full names of the watches so if you could just write them in the description would be really helpful. That way I can search a little deeper about them. Thank you and congratulations again for the show.

I loved the video. Great work. My father-in-law bought a Cellini in the early 90's. Less than six months later he returned it to upgrade to the President. People would admire the watch but then argue with him "that is what not a Rolex". :)

Great topic! I would have included the PAM 318; not because it didn't become sort of an underground favorite, but because it made Panerai look very, very shoddy. As for the Quai de l'Ile, quelle jolie file! I tried one on, and they are beautiful, and with the new calibre 5100 in stainless steel--wow! However, you are quite right in pointing out that Vacheron Constantin's "customization" program with them, didn't quite work out. However, there is a project in the works that may prove to be a redemption -- we'll see! Congratulations on a great Vlog.

Very interesting and as you said entertaining, good vid. There appears to be a threshhold as to a size of a watch. Big expensive watches fizzle out after a while. Small watches do the same at least in a masculine watch. Once you hit 40 MM it seems to be the sweet spot. Hublot, besides NBA players wearing them who in their right would buy one? Besides they are so heavily discounted you'll never get your money out of them.

The Prince is beautiful, maybe it just needed a white gold version and maybe it would have sold. Not too many successful men want yellow or rose gold, so maybe a dial color option and case color change would have had selling more (and of course dropping the price a bit).
Also, who would wear a watch with the name "Hublot" (who-blow). Just terrible.
