  • Watch Accuracy - What Makes Your Watch Accurate - Federico Talks Watches
    In this episode of Federico Talks Watches I discuss watch accuracy and what makes your watch accurate. Really it boils down to a few things, movement tolerances, movement regulation and in how many points your watch movement can be regulated. This can be the difference between your watch running +20 seconds a day or within COSC specifications. Less expensive watches like Seiko can run wonderfully but if they are not regulated as well or have less points of regulation the chance of them running accurately is significantly decreased.

    In fact Rolex movements tend not to have a regulator at all. You can only regulate them from the balance screws. Which is of course infernally difficult and should be left to pros. But my advice is, if you want an accurate watch, buy a quartz. If you want a mechanical watch, then don't worry about accuracy.

    You're spot on Federico (as usual!). It is luck of the drawer with regards to accuracy. My Submariner that I've owned for 22 years run around +3/4 secs, my SKX is 2 secs on the wrist, less accurate on the winder and my new Certina DS Action diver is around 9 secs but I'm sure it will get better after some decent wrist time and a chance to get broken in. My wife's Cartier runs 3-4 secs on the wrist but is terrible on the winder. Drops to -20 secs!

    Great video, and good to see you back. I was hoping for a broader coverage on accuracy. For example, how magnetic fields affect accuracy and a bit about how Rolex Milgauss uses a Faraday cage and maybe about the Master Chronometer certification by METAS + Omega. Another interesting topic would be about in-house certifications like the Grand Seiko Standard which adds a sixth position in the testing and how it's also a bit tighter at -3/+5 vs COSC's -4/+6. Then, there's the accuracy of quartz, and even more accurate watches that synchronize with GPS or how some watches receive radio signals to sync with atomic clocks to achieve ridiculous levels of accuracy. That would be a much longer video though, so not sure if other people would enjoy it, and perhaps too much to ask. But I really like the photo of the regulator. I also didn't know about the Micro Stella screws on the balance. Thanks

    Great video. I like your more technical view on watches compared to some other channels. Speaking of the Seiko 5, I noticed you can stop the second hand movement by applying the slightest rotation to crown when adjusting the minute hand anti-clockwise. Same with my SKX. Could this damage the movement or is this a feature inherent to non-hackable automatics ? Cheers

    Hi Federico,
    A watch running slightly fast isn't such an issue for me. But -15 or more seconds a day would be annoying. Because I'm going to sell my Nomos Ahoi, I send it back to Nomos, because of a minor issue. They did a complete overhaul including a re-regulation. Now it's running nicely. Instead of loosing about 10 seconds a day it is running about 2 seconds fast now. Perfect for me!
    Best regards,
    Claus

    I found in general watches (checked on several ETAs and japan in-house) run slower while being rested on side, and faster while being rested dial up or down flat on the surface. Which is understood as in the 2nd case internal gear wheels are running by standing on the end of the pin - so it is less friction in general across the movement. so when I see watch is getting ahead I rest it on the side for a night to slow it down, or vise versa if it is getting behind. i did not have a large exposure to lot's of watches but this approach will likely work for any mechanical watch - including sealed swatch.

    What's your thought on the Seiko 5 and should I buy one?

  • @blasien1
    @blasien1 8 років тому

    "Luck of the draw" is a good way to put it. In engineering we talk about tolerance stackup. Every part has its own acceptable tolerance range on manufacture. So when you pull parts out of the bin and assemble them into a unit, the individual part tolerances add up to an overall configuration that can be more or less advantageous, yet still be within the overall tolerances of the finished assembly. Thus a particular Seiko keeping better time than a particular Rolex. The tighter tolerances held on the parts, function, and final assembly the tighter you can control the final product configuration and performance, but there's still a range and some examples in that range will be better than others in the range. Tighter tolerances means more expense. The most expensive pieces are basically handcrafted, with individual part fitting and selection greatly adding to labor and fabrication expense.

    Hi Frederico, nice video as always. On accuracy, I read a lot of the watch forums etc and find that a lot of people get to hung up on the accuracy of their watch, being not happy if it's 10 seconds out for example. I own a lot of Seikos with the 7S26 movement, and find that on average they are around +/- 10 to 15 seconds which is fine by me, cause they are all consistent. What I wouldn't be happy with is if a watch was + 10 one day - 8 the next + 9 the next - 7 the next, and so on. Consistently +15 is a lot easier to live with than inconsistency.

    Talk about being a lucky one; I have a Steinhart Ocean One GMT with an ETA 2893-2 movement that's about a year old and it is still running well within COSC Specs. It can gain -4 to +2 seconds per day. Over a two weeks period in can gain as much as 15 seconds. It very seldom loses more than 4 seconds over a week's time. Now that's not to be sneezed at. Lucky me.

    Excellentr explanation of whats the regulation is all about, you described technical aspects in plain english for the non connoseur however it will be good to add that in the process of regulating a watch usually the watchmaker makes use of that special machine that shows the deviation from the mean of a particular piece (dont remember the name) which shows a report with dots representing the average deviation from the mean of that watch.

    Hi Federico,
    I just had a quick question for you (or anyone else who can respond) about measuring a watches accuracy. Is it simply an average over a span of time? For example, if I set a watch to match the atomic clock, then a week later, that watch is now 35 seconds behind the atomic clock, is it simply averaged at -5 seconds/day? If not, how is this actually done?
    Thanks!!!!

  • @SuperBullyone
    @SuperBullyone 5 років тому

    on my Swiss Connect Analytics, it gives an amplitude e.g. 299 degrees. it says -6.1 seconds a day slowing down, face down, and -12 seconds a day face up. Analytics says: your watch is slowing down. Is it time to have my M&B Capeland oiled or serviced? Or is that about average good as it gets. Is 6 to 12 slow in 24 hours a day ok? My most accurate watch is a Dunhill Dhunhillian Eta movement is +2 seconds a day tested face up and face down. I have a newer Ginault Ocean Rover that is gaining 4 to 12 seconds a day depending upon position. What does amplitude signify? thank you

    Question: how do I measure how many seconds a day my watch is running at? I own a Breitling Navitimer World and I am very interested in measuring this.

  • @kermitaner
    @kermitaner Рік тому

    the beat rate also affects accuracy, higher beat rates ( 28.800 or more ) tend to have better accuracy in general. Also the amount of mainspring winding affects the speed of the watch, full wound mainspring usually runs slowest , then it gets faster when the amplitude decreases. Automatic watches can be more accurate, because they longer keep the same amount of mainspring winding than hand winding ones, when they where only wound once a day. Temperature also affects the speed/accuryca of the watch.

  • @logicalstevezzz
    @logicalstevezzz 8 років тому

    I'm sure Fed knows this but some watches will also run differently depending on how close to fully wound they are kept. A watch kept on a winder is not only in a different position (orientation) than it would be laying on the nightstand or in a typical watch box, it is constantly being wound. If a watch is running lets say 15 seconds per day fast, it can probably be improved simply by changing how often and how fully you wind it or what position it lays in if you take it off at night. It takes some effort to figure out each watches "personality" but it can make a difference if you aren't willing to open it up and tweak it.

  • @Kamikazekman
    @Kamikazekman 8 років тому +5

    Don't forget Federico, you can also "regulate" your watch by the position you rest it in eg. crown up, crown down, dial up, dial down etc. Depending on the movement, positional variance when off the wrist can help keep the watch keep good time also!

      +Federico I (Federico Talks Watches) oooo apologies! I must've missed it... I had to watch this vid in two parts (due to work) so maybe I must've accidentally skipped that section! :)

    The Citizen titanium blue dial eco drive is the most accurate watch ever. I wear it now 1.5 month....0.5 second difference with the atomic time...amazing

    I'm considering now to buy a junghans meister mega. Checks the atomic clock 1440 times per day... so runs within a fraction of a second exact...
    I like the mechanical watches... but it's like insisting to have a car with a carburettor and mechanical choke... charming of course...

    Most of my watches beat at 21600 bph, but some are chronometers. Does this mean that a 21600 bph chrono is less accurate than a 28800?
