My first luxury watch was a watch I coveted all my life since I flew private planes, a Breitling Navitimer. So sometimes the 1st luxury watch is a watch that your heart desires, darn the future resale value, the present value, or what watch experts think. Buy what makes you happy. I'm sad the Breitling value has diminished in your eyes. But I have never sold any of my watches ever, and I certainly wasn't going to sell my Navitimer anyway.
If I was going to choose one of the watches in your video, I would choose the blue "James Bond" Omega Seamaster. That is a terrific beginner luxury watch. Not too expensive, with good watch horology.
I agree with some of the other entries in this comment section. IMO, the Oris is not a "Luxury" watch, and the Rolex is bit expensive to be a "Beginner" Luxury watch. If someone is looking for a little cheaper Beginner Luxury watch I do like the Tudor Black Bay Heritage. I especially like the red dial with golden hands. I can see this being a first beginner luxury watch for someone.
Mark Klein I agree with the omega, but if you buy at ad they are all saying that omega prices are skyrocketing ... I was looking for a watch last month in Jamaica and the omega at a AD had no margin for a discount so I had to go Breitling Super Ocean 42 which I love lol
The Navitimer is a fantastic first watch.
So glad you shouted out for the Oris Aquis, fed!! You are a true watch expert!! All excellent picks but totally agree with you on the Oris being in there too! A hidden gem if ever there was one!!
I have a Tank L.C. automatic, bought by my grandfather at the store in Paris in the early 70's I am sure this watch the last time was serviced was probably in the mid 80's and it still damn accurate. I agree with Federico, I believe it deserves some respect
First two yes! My first was a Datejust when, I was 26, a reward for "Making It" (I'm 49 now) still have it today and love/loving it-same flavor you pictured. 2nd one I got was Vintage 1962 Black Dial Seamaster DeVille Crosshair. You were 100% correct on all points-for Rolex & Omega.
I just bought a Frederique Constant Classic. A great entry level luxury watch IMO. The finish is incredible.
Hey Frederico! I love the fact that you made this video! I am a new collector and I cannot buy only expensive (above 1000) watches so please keep up doing such videos!
As a new collector, I just bought a 2017 ORIS BC3 Advanced Day Date. It’s my new favorite and daily wear watch.
I love how you say "I catch you guys, In the next one. Take care". It's like your signature already:)
I love every watch you mentioned. just started collecting watches and have the Oris Aquis. I'm ready for the next IWC or Omega??? not sure, THANK YOU FEDERICO FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO!
For all those who want to learn english, watch this guy’s videos. Great vocabulary. Thank you Federico.
The Aquis was my first watch and i looove it
Good list Fed - I did this for a friend recently - very close to same criteria...Rolex GMT Master II, Rolex Explorer 2 Polar, JLC Reverso Duoface, Tudor Heritage BB Burgundy, and the Speedy.
My first luxury watch was the Cartier Tank. It looked great with a suit and I had many compliments on a daily basis.
Cartier is GREAT. Thank you, Federico, for bravery to admit that!
Just found your channel, and had to laugh when your first pick for a luxury watch was a Rolex datejust, which was my first luxury watch. Worn nearly every day for 7 years and still looks great, I'm starting to look again and the Seamaster is also high on my list (as well as a Grand Seiko).
I knew that I would like this video as soon as DJ was mentioned.
Federico, the Datejust is an excellent choice if you don't hate the cyclops. For those like me, the Oyster Perpetual is a better choice.
Luxury is hard to define. I consider my latest acquisition, a Steinhart OVM to be a luxury watch. It is double the price of any watch I have previously owned, it has a Swiss ETA movement, and it is superfluous. I have two devices on my person that are more accurate and two others are within arms reach.
dhsilv2 Which Grand Seiko do you own?
So funny Fed. My current collection in order of purchase: Rolex Datejust II (black stick dial with smooth bezel and oyster bracelet), Oris Aquis (gradient blue dial on bracelet), Omega Speedy Pro (hesalite), Cartier Tank Solo XL.
I’m torn on the next one...saw the SMP you put up and thought about it...but the new Tudor Black Bay 58 is pulling at my heart strings...that gilt dial and the proportions are on point!
Another great vid!
Many times I was on the edge of buying cheap Rolex/Omega/Breitling etc, the entry luxury watch, thinking like after entry I'd be automatically getting more serious luxury watches. Thank god I didn't do it and saved my money for something really special. I did spend a couple K's for all kinds of different watches tho, which helped me to understand what I really want.
Great energy Fed! Feels like you're especially refreshed after your birthday weekend. Happy belated!
My first watch was a very personal pick. The 50th anniversary James Bond Omega Seamaster. Never met someone wearing the same watch, which I really like.
I have to agree with your choices this time Fed. 3 of those watches you picked were 3 of the 5 that came to mind when I read the video title. While many don’t consider the Oris to be luxury, whether it is or isn’t, it’s a GREAT first watch in the $1500 and up price segment. I cannot disagree with any Cartier pick either, since as you said, they invented the wristwatch and the Solo is a ton of watch and history for the money. Again, great picks and welcome back
my first watch was IWC Pilot with bracelet bought in 2000, still have and use regularly - leaving to a good friend in my will.
Absolutely agree with you about the Tank. History, originality, dignified, reasonably priced... what a winner
Got my omega seamaster last summer! Great every day watch
Hey Fed!
Great selection. But i think you should narrow down the choices for each watch category so viewers knows what suits them better for first luxury time piece. Eg:
My pick:
Dress watch low end: Orient Bambino
Sports watch low end: Seiko SKX
Dress watch mid end: Tag Heuer carrera
Sports watch mid end: Seamaster ceramic, Breitling Superocean, Tudor Blackbay, Longines conquest, Aqua racer
Dress watch high end: Rolex Datejust 2
Sports watch high end: Rolex Explorer 2, Submariner, Batman
Nevertheless I love your videos! Keep it up!
Best video so far. Keep up the great work!
In my humble opinion, the first luxury watch should not bankrupt the buyer as its is a stepping stone to the grail watch (thus having excess cash buffer helps). The DJ is an excellent choice IF bought used or one can consider the grand Seiko quartz which I think is the best bang for the buck with the latest Omega Aqua Terra 150 (used) a close second.
Once an individual got his/her first luxury watch, just save up and go for the grail watch. I've learnt it the hard way by buying watches to curb my hunger for my grail (jlc reverso) which I waited 7 years for the right color, design and size. And once I got it, I haven't had a second thought on any other luxury watches. In fact, my go to watches now are the Reverso and a simple Seiko Sarb035.
Love your passion about watches. I get it!
Federico - Yes! I think your picks make total sense for the first time buyer. You had great diversity here to appeal to a variety of tastes.
Thanks for the upload 👍🏽
Love these choices, mainly because I own 2 of them. The Datejust is just a perfect watch and my first "real" watch was an Oris TT Diver, the precursor to the Aquis.
Finally! New video. Welcome back.
I have enjoyed watches most of my adult life. I basically wore one watch from 1995 to 2015 when the case finally gave out. As a military man I chose the G Shock DW 6900-1V. Today at 53 and retired, I’m able to start dipping my toes into the water, slowly. In watching and reading reviews you definitely see peoples preferences interfere with objectivity and I get it, we like what we like. But mostly what I’m finding is in most cases, that “finer” watches from a price point of $700-$5000 dollars, most are using Sellita and ETA movements. Some tool them up a little and admit they are ETA based but “to our specifications.” I’m not interested much in a resale side of my collection. I’m doing it for my enjoyment of having nice time pieces that ultimately will end up going to my sons and grandsons.
I appreciate Federico’s videos and his commentary.
I have the latest Omega Seamaster Professional 300m. It is such a great watch. I love it even more. Couldn't wait to buy the Omega Speedmaster moon watch latest. It's a collectors item.
I own a Datejust and I love it.
Great list, love the Tank Solo pick.
I came into this video thinking I will hear about Longines, Fredrique Constant, MontBlanc .. things like that lol ... This stuff still way out of my budget.
Oris aquis is 2k retail but can be had for under 1400, and you can almost always trade them for even money
@@ScottDreyfus Love this watch, its ma next purchase! However, those arent considered luxury.
Used market!
NOMOS NOMOS NOMOS NOMOS NOMOS and NOMOS
Seiko, Christopher Ward and Hamilton are all good at a lower budget- if you buy with a maximum discount and look after them you always have the option of selling and won’t lose much
Awesome picks, I agree with the tank solo!
I used to knock Cartier but that was just because I never gave them any time, after 20 plus years of collecting I started looking into Cartier and learned they made the first pilots watch for Santos. We WISs have always loved history and the “originals” have been the most sought after pieces. Hence my respect and appreciation has taken a complete 180. My only problem is I just don’t look good with a rectangular watch from the JR Sebring to the Reverso...it just doesn’t feel right on my wrist.
Excellent list. Love my first purchase: Omega Seamaster Quartz, electric ⚡️ blue dial. Takes a beating!!
Just brought a rolex explorer 1 as my first automatic. Could not be any happier with my choice!
Shu Li That’s probably the first luxury watch I would get, if I ever got one.
Where did you purchase the explorer?
I'm saving my money for that one because I don't think it can get much better in this price range - few watches that combine class and sportiness this awesome!
The Oris Aquis bracelets are the most beautifully constructed designs in my humble subjective opinion. So I'm thinking of buying a meistertaucher. :)
Thanks for the video. You have a new subscriber. I am currently wearing a Seiko SKX007J as my daily wristwatch. I am pretty sure my first luxury watch will be the Omega Seamaster 300 diver with black dial.
My first watch was a Rolex datejust followed by the sea master and then I went up a bit with the GMT master ii and then a Cartier de drive.
Hey Fedrico, another great video.
My two cents for a first time luxury watch would be either the Omega Moon or a Rolex Sub / Explorer II. ...all grey market; of course.
Ty for this
Love the video! Almost had me on the Cartier, but seamaster was the winner :) cheers keep up the vids!
Rolex Datejust $7-9k????? I am not poor. I am not even middle class. And I could not see myself ever buying something that much. Ever. Wow. The watch industry would be in trouble if I were the average client. Just bought a Victorinox titanium I.N.O.X. Pro Diver for $600. Good enough for me. Interesting video!
Datejust👍Omega Seamaster 🖒IWC M18👍Oris Aquis- A great sport watch. I'm with you Federico that the Cartier Tank is a great watch.
The first Swiss piece I purchased was an Oris Aquis. Everyone thinks it is a sub at first glance. I love that the general public aren't really in the know, but watch guys and gals always give you props!
My Oris Red Aquis Special Edition is beautifully made and a joy to wear. I never regret that purchase.
cartiers are amazing! i have a tank and it is super versatile. it goes with almost anything. with the tank, as well my iwc mark xvi, datejust ii, tag F1 gmt and tudor black bay black, they cover basically any and all bases. great video!
All beautiful watches!
Aqua Terra is so versatile and beautiful, seems like a winner
My first luxury watch is a Breitling Chronomat 44 Limited Edition with B01 Caliber inside. I am so happy with my choice, I have it for over a year now and i am still in love with it.... Wearing it every day...
I would go for Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39, model: 114300.
Awesome video Fed, I will be getting a Oris asap! Can't wait for the tax return :D.
Seamaster and Datejust (or Oyster Perpetual) are great first picks. I bought a pre-owned 2531.80 "Bond" Seamaster as my first foray into the luxury watch segment, and I love it.
Man that IWC looks georgious (and is also completely under the radar unlike a sub etc).. the Spitfire with silver case is the one that really does it for me.. if there werenˋt so many great watches for ~5k I am craving
Omega AT (i like the annual calendar) second hand. It's the everything watch.
oh i want that cartier! so beautiful!
I think the 2018 Cartier Santos, 2018 Rado Hyperchrome Ultra Light and Tudor Black Bay 58 are both great watches depending on whether you want something that's an iconic dress/sport hybrid, ultra modern or vintage diver. They are all at least 100m water resistant so as a first watch they also make great everyday watches for first-time owners.
My first luxury watch was a tudor fastrider.
I love my Seamaster Professional Automatic with steel bezel from 1998. It looks brand new!
Hey Federico. Love your channel. I've been collecting watches for a little while now. What are your thoughts on the new IWC Spitfire Automatic? I recently bought a Black Bay 58, A submariner, a batman and a seamaster.
Oh yes. Bronze or Silver?
IWC Portuguese chrono looks beautiful ‘dressed up’ with shirt and blazer or ‘dressed down’ with jeans and t shirt. Always appropriate. Good choices in this video.
Oris is entry level luxury, without a doubt. They’ve been around since 1904... sapphire crystal excellent bracelet, great dive depth, overall great quality for the price ... great video Fed
You forgot grand seiko. If you can afford rolex datejust then you can definitely afford an entry level grand seiko which in my opinion as classy as a datejust although it's understated
Grand Seiko is still a niche piece, so its not really good for beginners
Love your videos. What are you thoughts on Bremont?
Btw, couldn’t agree more with your analysis on each watch. The DJ was truly a great first purchase and ticked all the boxes. If you are only going to have one watch, it can serve every purpose quite magnificently.
The tank is perfect for the office (Attorney here) and really flys under the radar in court.
Love my Speedy but the one thing it’s missing is good ole water resistance.
The IWC is a really good watch but I wouldn’t get it for a first luxury piece...maybe to complete a DJ or SMP...and to be honest I really like the blue dial version of the mark xviii (too bad it’s 36mm).
Again, great vid.
M Riley “youthful 45 year old”. Sounds like a mid life crisis 😜
Federico I’m insanely obsessed with the 5167A Patek steel on the black rubber strap! The price blows my mind and well over my budget but I want it so badly 👁🌟👁
Agree with you so much....
Thanks for posting. I didn't know that the date master came in a smooth dial. Cool. I've never really been a fan of the fluted dial, though the white gold ones look better to me. Do you ever buy at auction, fix them up and resell them? Some of those watch auctions seem to be more for the wholesale market because there are too many landmines to watch out for that you guys would recognize and avoid.
I still like the pre-ceramic seamaster better. The final version had a coaxial movement and applied markers also, but still had the wave dial. I'd choose a wave dial over a ceramic bezel. Just me.
YAY for the Cartier Tank Solo!!!
Whats up yes this my second or third time watching this and I’m thinking of getting a Cartier Tank solo quartz in the future as my “luxury” dress watch and also the 39mm Longines Hydroconquest. Would that be considered entry level luxury, as the Oris Diver ?
Cartier Tank Must Extra Large was my first luxury watch and I still love and wear it.
Happy belated birthday Fed!
Thank you very much James
Fantastic choices Fed, the seamaster was my first thought so pleased you had that one in your picks. I got the Aquis last year and your right if it's 'bang for buck' it takes some beating. I can see why you picked the IWC because you are in the know. However if I told Mr Joe Public that was a luxury watch at 4K, most would laugh. I see it, and you do too, but most just would not get it IMHO anyway.
Good list
Is it normal for second hand to move a little bit when adjusting time? I just got a brand new breguet and the second hand move a little when I adjust time.
What a great channel
I agree that Oris is the best buy for the money. As for the Cartier Tank watch, that was my first luxury buy. What are your thoughts on the Tudor Black Bay?
Tudor black bay, Omega aqua terra blue dial, Rolex explorer or explorer 2, Cartier Santos XL black croc strap would be my choices.
My first luxury watch purchase was a Rado which still looks great in black ceramic with gold accents. At 1750 Euro more affordable than any mentioned here. Of course, it might not qualify as a luxury watch, but it is beautiful, my primary criteria for all watches, including my 18K yacht master.
Love the Tank, good last choice.
Oris! Man that’s a great looking diver.
Hey Federico, love your videos. Can you please do one that explains how much it costs to service the most popular models, and what you get for your money. I have saved 6 years to be in a position to buy a JLC Reverso but never really thought about servicing costs Thanks!
Your pfp looks familiar. Where's it from?
Rolex datejust and Omega seamaster are good choices but then could not agree with others.i would prefer nomos tangente in house classic minimal with manual wind.grand Seiko snowflake spring drive or a grand Seiko GMT, and JLC reverso over a Cartier any day.
I'm a sucker for NOMOS, absolutely love the bauhaus-style , but they always seem so fragile to me ? I'm looking for my first watch and i'm torn between the iwc pilot mark XVIII or a nomos tangente neomatik. But somehow i feel like the nomos is less durable
Muhl Glaschutte, superb quality with an elegant and coherent design language. You don't see that many so there is still a sense of exclusivity with them. And the prices are very fair and not silly, attainable for regular working people. I think their quality fully justifies the price, not something you can say about all watch brands.
Hey Federico, what about the Oris diver 65. I love the retro looks
The real question is SMPC, blue or black...?
That's the one I'm saving up for and I go back and forth on the color almost daily, great video Fed!
I’m with you fed , I love Cartier ❤️
Rolex Datejust, 36 mm. And if you don't like the cyclops, you can use a generic crystal instead. I saw this once and it worked pretty well. Of course it is important to keep the original, in case you want to sell the watch.
Solid list.
My first luxury is the tudor pelagos 42.
I’ve grown my collextion to 4 since then but the pelagos is always a special one as my first.
Never sell your 1st watch so pick carefully!
Haz uno sobre los Longines, a ver cuales recomiendas, a mi me gustan los master collection, los elegant y los flagship.
These watches are great.
Love my Aquis
WOW, perfect timing as I’m looking to purchase my first luxury watch! Question I have had my eye on the Rolex date just smooth bezel, jubilee bracelet with rhodium dial. Is it possible to inner change the bracelet with say a rubber strap or leather just to give it a new look sometimes or is the bracelet not inner changeable ? Just curious. Thx
Rolex date just is a good choice but if want a versatile watch and you like to change straps like put on a nato or rubber strap then look into a Tudor Black Bay.
QuickSilver 1934 you can change the strap on every modern watch and the vast majority of vintage ones.
