My favorite punisher scene is the one at the shop where he try’s to get some gear and is about to leave then the guy tries to push CP and say “shes barely 12 guaranteed” and Frank doesn’t say anything and grabs a bat and does his work, like you see how he believes what he does is right when he has to deal with monsters like that on a daily basis.

You Barely made it before Christmas and glad you did, I've never really cared for the punisher but you've changed my mind about it and now I feel like at the very least watching the movies and shows.
This is an excellent take on the Punisher. It treats him as a complex character. And not “a ‘villain’ who’d happily gun down a black man or rape women in Vietnam”. Yeah, nobody’s ever had a bad take like that, right?
Ennis's work has a very distinct British/Irish charm to them that has always drawn me to his works (especially the boys comics which I absolutely adore and hate what Amazon did with the adaptation) as an English-man and in the least preachy way possible, it's so nice to finally hear someone else who appreciates his works on the internet and understands why he writes the way he does without just pointing the finger and repeating the same old "hE HaTEs SuPErhEroEs" over and over again.
I appreciated Ennis’ work with Preacher. People take it as a condemnation of religion in general, but there’s more to it than that. It criticizes dogmatic perspectives and organized religion (i.e. Catholic Church), yes. But it also shows the other side of that coin: the godless behavior our fellow man is capable of when turned away from faith. The comic even poses it’s god as a megalomaniac narcissist seeking our validation, as opposed to being a righteous deity. The series even ends on a rather dark note when the Saint of Killers assassinates god and takes over his mantle, implying the world is about to stumble into even further chaos on an incredible scale.
@@brainiac.computerI mean, Garth Ennis is from northern ireland, so no wonder his head would be filled with anti-catholic propaganda, especially during "the troubles", how is a "religious war" less justifiable than any other war? Also what is a "non-oraganized religion?" Some new age BS? Or just being "spiritual"? Also he just repeats a common trope of "God is kind of a jerk or in the gray zone" that a lot of more edgy writers use, thinking its the most "innovative" thing ever.
@HortonSalm It's more of a feeling I get from the way he writes most of his characters, especially in something like The Boys where you really feel that all to familiar cynical, sarcasm along with the overt bluntness in the team but Butcher especially. Butcher is like the embodiment of the 'hard man' stereotype from a lot of British films from the 80s - 2000s. Like he looks straight out of something like Snatch (2000) or Lock, stock and Two Smoking Barells (1996) and embodies all of the cynicism and sarcassm a true Cockney boy like himself can bring to the states. Hughie emanate's that small amount of hope and optimism left within the British people that's been crushed and weighed down due to our history and the way our class system works which discourages working class people from ever pushing themselves to do something more with their lives. Even the non British characters embody a distinctive British essence that I can't describe.
I feel like Garth ennis is probably more cynical towards superheroes but still loves the super hero genre, I can’t really say I fully love Garth Ennis’s work but I just feel like Garth ennis work probably can just never really work as an adaptation because really your not seeing Garth ennis your just seeing someone trying to emulate Garth ennis, I won’t say some changes in the boys Amazon series I think does stuff better then the comics but it is also vice versa
I still remember the adrenaline coursing as every episode passed. The first season ending with such a good climax, only to be elevated higher in the second season. He's unapologetically walking a road of his own ruin while trying to pave the path for others even if he doesn't often succeed. In the most respectful way, quoting Deadpool, "fucks hard". The Punisher is what Batman could be, if he was without his code for different reasons.
I think what makes The Punisher a hard character to write is, as Garth Ennis points out, he's a very simple character. He's almost like a gun. You point him at something and he'll shoot it, no questions asked. That said, that means that his stories can become repetitive unless you got a great writer like Garth Ennis or Jason Aaron on board. Also thank you for dispelling the misconceptions about Ennis, particularly his stance on superheroes. I always get irritated when I see people ripping on him for things he didn't say or do. So I appreciate you taking the time to clear things up. I disagree slightly on what you said about the show, I view the Netflix version of Frank as someone who isn't quite there yet (at least, in season 1 that is.) Sure, he's dipped into The Punisher, but he's not really The Punisher yet, he's still an angry, grieving man who's taking revenge on his family's killers. By the end of the first season, he's finally embraced becoming The Punisher. I also like how the first season tied everything together, though there were some parts that dragged, like the ex-military guy you mentioned. The scene where he and Frank have a confrontation on the phone is pretty cringe inducing to watch. Season 2 was a wreck though...my God. Great video as always, I do hope to see a full video about Ennis' Punisher MAX run. Might be the best work on The Punisher that's ever been done. Jason Aaron's take is also very good, but Ennis gets The Punisher in ways few others really can, much like how Claremont gets the X-Men or how Grant Morrison gets Superman.
Marvel/Disney always talking about representation, but they show their fear with the Punisher. They release their girlbosses or Blacktain Americas, yet ignore the true greats. His grandest nemesis. Barracuda for MCU everyone. Not only the greatest Punisher character, not only the greatest black character, but perhaps the greatest fictional character ever to be put to pen and paper. The Barracuda Cinematic Universe must be made! They can release it alongside their adaptation of Avengers 200 with Captain Marvel. Another classic that will get them nothing but accolades.
@lonewanderer1328 he said GREATEST black marvel character. Black panther is good, and Falcon is good too. But Sam Wilson Cap in MCU is a DEI hire (it should've been Bucky) and boo where near as compelling as his turn in the comics was. Barracuda, though... is perfect.
Great vid TAL. For those that want a bit of Punisher action, the “Blood and Glory” 4-part series is great. It is a great team up with Captain America, having some great interactions between the two. I imagine it is a peak into what an Ennis Captain America run would be like, to a lesser degree.
The whole "no kill rule" of superheroes doesn't work when the writers made the villains to be extremely monstrous (Case in point, Batman and Joker). Sure, Frank is not a "hero" but he is a good balance for the irredeemable villains who keep committing atrocities and should be taken down forever.
Here is my alternate universe arc: We keep season 1. Season two we have him travel to overseas like in a jungle where he is taking down local trash there following a lead. Basically a lot of jungle warfare. At first there are some things getting the better of him 3-4 of the final episodes frank is working these traps and his environment so well it’s giving the local groups a hard time. End with getting a lead about super terrorists being planed. Season 3 as Frank investigates more about these super terrorists, have him team up loosely with something like shield, have him bankrolled and travel to these different countries around the world finding clues about this super program to put a stop to it. End the season with shield and Frank parting ways because their head division something got fired or they were order to focus on another issue or word got out they are working with The Punisher and so they have to distance themselves to an even greater extent and deny their relationship or something. Meaning season 4 frank has to fight in the middle east a group of terrorists as he hones in on some super villains, but low enough level (the Rino, jubilee, real low level but a different challenge of criminal to fight) not to throw power scaling out the window, this is to focus him back up on lower stakes story wise. We just had the over seas building to the punisher gets a huge budget and neat gadgets part, now we need him to use up his toys and perks mostly before heading back to the US. Once the super terrorists get cleaned up, we get a lead that brings Frank back to the US where a company seemed to be funding the work was also preforming other sinful activities. So frank suspects them of being tied to the situation. This one would only really have one main villian/obstical for frank compared to the several last season and refocuses more on Frank’s investigative and planning operations. We could if we need to have, this be a wrap up season for Frank where maybe he has to face his own punisher, while he’s been away. Except this guy’s code is a lot looser than franks. It ends with frank trying to think about retiring or not but we keep it open ended. If we need him in a future movie or team up it’s there but that would probably be the end for his run in my arch. Intro, the super arch, then closing arch. 5 seasons, end it there. But this is just a larger overview.
On the point of Punisher being "political" more or less just stems from the scope of certain concepts being politicized to the point that they want sides being taken. What with the Left going the route of being soft on crime and frothing at the mouth over gun use. Or, hell, just how often Pun-Pun goes after PDFs, but I can't imagine why they'd hate him for that... He himself isn't political, but what he does has been made political. Thus he is a target for censorship/deconstruction much like any media they don't like.
Did you take a break from Fox News to comment this? Talk to people in real life and you’ll realise not everyone is the strawman you’ve drawn them to be.
Eh. Punisher being political goes beyond whatever ineffectual liberals blabber about online. When systems fail the people, or are made to fail through corruption, people will turn to the Punisher and relate with that frustration for a better world, violent as it may be in execution. No pun intended. It's not been *made* political as much as it's incredibly hard to not interpret as so with that common lens.
I don't think that's true. It's more that the punisher proposes a idea, and while at that core that is idea of simply dilemma of humanity, the actual conversation of it is political. The punisher is about punishment, full on punishment and that's the point. He is vengeance and retribution, but also gratification and a turn away from the concept of redemption. And the left isn't really soft on crime. They're notoriously over vindictive on certain crimes, especially social and political crimes such as misgendering someone which is more of a side effect of radical attempts to gain political social control than true political conceptualization or loyalty, it's one of the reason they can be so break neck switch about that stuff. You see the same thing in the growing trad right groups who feel they are materializing as the personification as the collective right wing reaction to that stuff. Many of the other heroes skirt the law but live by a strong sense of ethics. Punisher dosen't really have much ethics outside of justifying who he is allowed to target and so there are a lot of things to call him out for. Politics follow the man because he is a man vs society and society attempts to implement justice. If someone says "This thing is flawed. Look at this cool guy who goes against it in the most brutal way possible as a free agent" that statement and depiction is always going to be sort of anti-establishment in some form because frank by default is a ideal power fantasy for people who feel that way about the establishment and its attempts and rules of justice. It wouldn't matter what side was in power. It's just that as that core idea gets batted back and forth, he eventually picks up political baggage. The punisher is obviously not pro-cop, but somehow he gained that status for a while because he became associated with being tougher on crime. But it wouldn't be hard to just as much argue that such a man COULD include social issues into his targeting, especially when those social issues may allow crimes legally via social allowance. You saw a lot of this psuedo-punisher stuff in the tropes of the "racist getting punished" that was common for a while, sure it wasn't directly the punisher but it's the same thing. Strangely, this trope evaporated when blacks became more vocally and collective racist towards Asians and whites.
Fun fact is originally James Cameron wanted to adapt Spider-Man and he had an R-rated film in mind with a graphic sex scene between MJ and Peter and plenty of profanity and blood. He originally had Leonardo DiCaprio in mind as Peter, Nikki Cox as MJ, Kevin Spacey as Green Goblin, Bill Paxton as the guy that kills Uncle Ben, Michael Douglas as J. Jonah Jamison, Michael Biehn as Sandman, Katherine Hepburn as Aunt May, Lance Henricksen as Electro, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Doc-Ock.
Okay having watched the entire video... Man. I can really see why he is such a difficult character to write for. Great work and honestly I am glad to see more appreciation for the 2004 movie which I feel is weird that the critics kind of just bashed it sometimes. Even when looking for other reviews for it I haven't seen much reverence for it but man am I ever glad to see my high opinion for the movie somewhat vindicated by this video. I wasn't fully aware of the other adaptations until later but never found enough interest to see them myself. But taking in the whole context of just what a human character Frank really is, kind of bums me out that no one really wants him anymore. Especially when I think he's a character that is perfect for this kind of climate where corruption is rampant for a character like Frank to see to it that it is dealt with. If there is one thing that this video has done for me it would be to perhaps read more of what you've recommended regarding Frank at his best. Merry Christmas, can't for more next year. No clue if you've got the time to read my comments but I do forward to what you're bringing in 2025 even if I'm too poor to buy anything you've promoted merch or otherwise.
Can’t believe The Punisher dragged The Grinch behind an alleyway and put a bullet to the back of Grinch’s skull. I mean- I can believe it because it’s Frank, but the idea the crossover was made in the first place. Pretty based to be honest.
i think his appearance in daredevil season 2 was flawless. it felt like garth ennis's punisher from the max comics come to life. by the time he got his solo series, it just felt like the writers wanted to make a wolverine story and slapped the punisher in it. or maybe im just so used to ennis's punisher who is so ingrained in his violent nature that hes constantly looking for criminals to satiate his rage. punisher born was an incredible story btw.
I was born in 05 and this was one of the first "superhero" movies I ever seen. I was maybe six and unsupervised, sneaked in my dad's room and snagged some cool looking movies (also watchmen what a double feature) and I was blown away by how sad and just evil the world(s) can be. Just an amazing movie
glad you mentioned the whole ennis hates super heroes myth, it always bothered me that this is usually the most common argument to disregard the boys comics as a whole. it sure isn't perfect but repeating something you saw on some comment section once to defend some *mediocre at its best* tv show by putting the source material down is silly billy behavior.
Dude, I'm in the middle of re-watching The Expanse right now, and I just now realized that Thomas Jane (Miller) played the Punisher. How did I never realize this?
That himt about the Punisher knowing who Dare Devil is, I think you missed a scene in the courtroom when Frank was acting like weird, looking around like he recognizes that voice from some where.
I think Punisher would have a problem with cops worshiping him...the problem is the scenes were he confonts them are always so corney and out of character lol Frank wouldn't give a very practiced and preachy lecture to them, he would just stare them down and keep tabs on them just in case
Well, considering Frank’s popularity during the 80s to the point that DC tried to have their own version of the punisher, even bringing back vigilante until the success of watchmen and the dark Knight returns.
29:55 - TO ANYONE SEEING THIS THAT LIKES PUNISHER 2004: *Look up John Pinette.* He plays one of the neighbors - something I never knew until seeing this video, as I hadn't seen the movie before. Very talented comedian, and seemed like an overall fun person. It could be worth checking one of his sets, though I admittedly haven't heard many since I was younger (My family listened to the comedy radio channels a lot) I had to do a triple take seeing him on a PUNISHER video essay lol
The Punisher is one of those characters you have a hard time disagreeing with. I mean with how often villains in Marvel escape and cause more trouble and show no regret for it, it's hard not to agree with his no nonsense method.
Ray Stevenson was the presence. Dolph was the look. Thomas was the hurt. Each brought something different to the role that made them stand out. Like dolph in the buff, monologuing to us about why he commits his crimes. Thomas Jane having all of this weirdness happening around him while trying to get his revenge made him feel more like a normal super intelligent and well trained vigilante. Ray Stevenson brought the comic book presence. His face, his hair, the jacket. Bernthal was mostly just an evolution of that military popularity and playing up the ptsd.
The Preacher from S2 of Netflix Punisher was actually based on the same character from Jason Aaron's Punishermax (2010) run. He was implemented much better in the comic than in the series, and I highly recommend that series for anyone interested in more Punisher content, it has a interesting twist on Frank's psyche and motivations and actually paints him more as a psychopath rather than a vengeful vigilante. Though it does have some shlock-y moments.
8:38 I didn’t know shit about captain marvel, except that in the X-men cartoon, rogue got her super strength and ability to fly from her; all the shit she did in the movie sorta was how I’d expect a super soldier (like a Spartan) to act, but that is definitely my bias (the augmented lady who went back to protect the new Hispanic Sarah Conner in the dark fate terminator movie, I liked her because she was like a Spartan…)
I thought the story with the Punisher vs Russian scene in the Thomas Jane movie was that it was Jane who was actually stabbed, and his pain reaction to having the knife slowly shoved in was real.
The only part of season 2 I really like was when the girl had to shoot a dude and she's freaking out about killing him, and Frank tries to comfort her by saying "You didn't kill him, you just shot him." BANG "I killed him."
Kitchen Irish still remains my favourite of the Max line. The lines from Finn Cooley, Yorkie, and the rest of the Irish gangs are downright hilarious. Still love the “I’ll be no one’s Ni- line again”, immediately followed up by “…Fu-k” as Finn realizes he just yelled that out loud in a New York cafe.
I've never watched this show and I never will but I still remember laughing my ass off when he was going up the stars and yells; "HEY! HEY! HEY" Which sounds like AYE! AYE! AYE!
Punisher 2004 is a perfect adaptation of normal punisher. Punisher 2008 is a perfect adaptation of Punisher MAX. Netflix punisher is somewhere in between but weighted more towards max. Almost like an emotionally fleshed out more hollywood verison of max.
Garth Ennis punisher is my favorite; also he wrote crossed and the boys. No lie Crossed makes me hope if there’s a zombie apocalypse; it’s anywhere from The Walking Dead to 28 Days later. A Crossed Apocalypse is my worst fear.

As soon as I saw "Bumpo" in the 2004 clips, I instantly yelled "It's John Pinette!! It's fucking John Pinette!!"
Dude was fucking funny too in his stand up. We lost him too soon man, it sucks.
What do you mean by British/Irish charm? I haven't read his stuff so it may be obvious when I do, just curious what you mean.
What comes around, goes around. You can't run from yourself forever.
Aw hell yes, this is gonna be awesome.
You should consider covering Berserk next.
Punisher always will be my favorite Marvel and Comic book character.
It should be noted it's Saint's wife who says "no. His whole family." Even though Saint just wanted Castle dead.
Funny enough, Punisher: Dirty Laundry was done by pre-Castlevania, pre-Fixing Apu Adi Shankar.
Can't even respect captain america nor black panther, huh? wild
@lonewanderer1328 he said GREATEST black marvel character. Black panther is good, and Falcon is good too. But Sam Wilson Cap in MCU is a DEI hire (it should've been Bucky) and boo where near as compelling as his turn in the comics was. Barracuda, though... is perfect.
Marvel-Disney will always focus on kids-teens or whatever the greatest paying audience is. Is Barracuda's appearing, it's in a TV show, if at all.
@@lincolnpascual He's baiting.
Great vid TAL. For those that want a bit of Punisher action, the “Blood and Glory” 4-part series is great. It is a great team up with Captain America, having some great interactions between the two. I imagine it is a peak into what an Ennis Captain America run would be like, to a lesser degree.
Thank you for the quality content as always dad
The whole "no kill rule" of superheroes doesn't work when the writers made the villains to be extremely monstrous (Case in point, Batman and Joker).
Sure, Frank is not a "hero" but he is a good balance for the irredeemable villains who keep committing atrocities and should be taken down forever.
Here is my alternate universe arc:
We keep season 1.
Leftist can't go 1 minute without ruining something for political gain. 😂😂😂
@@weezersthebluealbum9479 what part of the comment triggered you? Was it the pdf hate?
Punisher is the dad we all want in our lives.
Well this is a nice early Christmas gift. Thanks Loli and Merry Christmas!
For anyone who wants more Thomas Jane, The Expanse is a great show.
Fantastic show. As one who read the books; the show does it better.
@ Never read the books, but the show is excellent. 👍
7:26 Same here, man. Jackie screaming at the Angelus-possessed Jenny in Hell is still a sight that haunts my very nightmares ever since I was a kid.
"How The Punisher Saved Christmas"
Can’t believe The Punisher dragged The Grinch behind an alleyway and put a bullet to the back of Grinch’s skull. I mean- I can believe it because it’s Frank, but the idea the crossover was made in the first place. Pretty based to be honest.
The long awaited video.... The lore behind "That guy in the Punisher shirt.'
The 2004 Punisher movie is hella underrated, I loved it as a teen and it still fits the character for me
i think his appearance in daredevil season 2 was flawless. it felt like garth ennis's punisher from the max comics come to life. by the time he got his solo series, it just felt like the writers wanted to make a wolverine story and slapped the punisher in it. or maybe im just so used to ennis's punisher who is so ingrained in his violent nature that hes constantly looking for criminals to satiate his rage. punisher born was an incredible story btw.
What hurt the '04 Punisher movie was Kill Bill being released during the same weekend.
Only an hour and a half? You've fallen off
An utter travesty
I need a week long video to compensate for this shit.
love the mention of the movies. western dark noir like punisher and max payne are always my favorite.
"I don't know about Angels, but it's fear that gives men wings."
Yaaay! Something to listen to while I work! Thanks, Loli, love ya!
And Thomas Jane to this day is still down to play the character. Just Nobody gave him a decent script yet.
I love how you go from dead man's party to 89 batman soundtrack.
That himt about the Punisher knowing who Dare Devil is, I think you missed a scene in the courtroom when Frank was acting like weird, looking around like he recognizes that voice from some where.
I think Punisher would have a problem with cops worshiping him...the problem is the scenes were he confonts them are always so corney and out of character lol
Frank wouldn't give a very practiced and preachy lecture to them, he would just stare them down and keep tabs on them just in case
Well, considering Frank’s popularity during the 80s to the point that DC tried to have their own version of the punisher, even bringing back vigilante until the success of watchmen and the dark Knight returns.
29:55 - TO ANYONE SEEING THIS THAT LIKES PUNISHER 2004:
*Look up John Pinette.*
He plays one of the neighbors - something I never knew until seeing this video, as I hadn't seen the movie before.
Very talented comedian, and seemed like an overall fun person. It could be worth checking one of his sets, though I admittedly haven't heard many since I was younger (My family listened to the comedy radio channels a lot)
I had to do a triple take seeing him on a PUNISHER video essay lol
Man , I would love to get an actual adaptation of Garth Ennis' The Punisher Max but sadly , we will never get something as good as that
Oh my god, I have ALWAYS thought that the song “The man comes around” is a perfect fit for the Punisher
Ahhhhhh, bringing back old memories! This very much reminds me of Just Some Broomers horrid take/video on the Punisher and your response, iirc.
The Thomas Jane movie is my favorite. It feels so authentic and dedicated to its story. Almost like an indie passion project.
The intro was really good.🔥
Man. I really loved the 2004 Punisher Film even back then. Also, loved Debra Ann Woll since her time in Tru Blood.
The Punisher is one of those characters you have a hard time disagreeing with. I mean with how often villains in Marvel escape and cause more trouble and show no regret for it, it's hard not to agree with his no nonsense method.
Though the assault on precinct 13 reference in season 2 of the punisher show still makes me smile.
I'm pretty sure the punisher, moonknight, and Deadpool would "get along" just fine with each other
Ray Stevenson was the presence.
1:09 bro putting on the black powder red earth game music in the background like real psychos wouldn’t notice 😂
Bro that issue where the punisher basically gives a talking too at the police was gay,
Great video by the way
I think I'd rather see police take inspiration from any other hero honestly
Damn. Out here hitting us with the Peter Wolf Crier in the intro.
This gon’ be a good one.
I wonder if this video will boost the amount of Punisher mains in Marvel Rivals
The only part of season 2 I really like was when the girl had to shoot a dude and she's freaking out about killing him, and Frank tries to comfort her by saying "You didn't kill him, you just shot him." BANG "I killed him."
Punisher MAX is fantastic! Was especially fond of Valley Forge, Valley Forge and Widowmaker.
9:45 "Sir, mind explaining what do you mean by persistent and a picture of She-Hulk's Feet?"
Lawd help me, I'm gonna bust hard.
That scene has me laughing my ass off while his buddy is trying to remind him “This ain’t Belfast”
No wonder loli was losing sleep over this, as this vid is pretty good i say
Thank you! Punisher is a really misunderstood character, and I hate the fact that people consider him a fascist.
Calls Frank MACVSOG then proceeds to show a frame of a panel of Frank wearing a Marine Corps uniform lol
Garth Ennis punisher is my favorite; also he wrote crossed and the boys.
No lie Crossed makes me hope if there’s a zombie apocalypse; it’s anywhere from The Walking Dead to 28 Days later. A Crossed Apocalypse is my worst fear.
Daredevil Punisher being infinitely better than the variant we got in his own show.... goddammit
Red dead redemption one soundtrack option was *chefs kiss*
Punisher is MARVEL Batman. It makes sense they wouldn't know what to do with an interesting character like that.
I came to theAlmightyLoli for berserk and stayed for his perception, opinion and personality
