"Playing god"
"On a bass"
"Fretless"
Every single word is so impressive
I'm not that impressed by "a" to be honest :D
🙄@@joelflynn1124
@@joelflynn1124 What do you mean dude, that's the best part!
underrated comment
@@joelflynn1124"a" is sus for sure.
Now... Playing this song on bass it's really IMPRESSIVE.
Not to mention fretless
especially on fretless bass
Fretless bass. Which I got for Christmas last year and I absolutely love.
A dumb comment this is
Polyphia has a bass player.
as a guitarist I feel both attacked and admiring lmao, incredible mate
Yeah... as a bass player and guitar player of over 20 years I think this might be the hardest THING I've ever seen.
0:34 That gliss is lowkey fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Such precision and cleanliness, especially with the harmonic nuances that define the songs. Always wonderful talent man.
Thanks!!
@@CharlesBerthoud Cheers!
ironically, the harmonics were probably the easiest part of this, they're more forgiving than "normal" notes on a fretless
Ufcourse it should be when it's PRERECORDED 🤣🤣
@@omebiremeognut4551huh?
It took me buying a fretless instrument to realize how absolutely impossible it is to play well and in tune. Charles, you are a true master of your craft.
Why is that, if I may ask ?
@@hagegesamuel Because there are no frets... So your finger placement has to be perfect.
thats the key, you dont have to play in tune all the time
@@thekingofshadows5452music is highly subjective, so audiophiles tend to get caught up in their own flawed interpretation. So “perfect” comes into play, a lot.
imagine playing harmonic chords on a fretless bass 💀💀
I've worked at bass most of my life just to realize that this guy is the worlds most technically skilled bass player. I don't even know of a close second. I was tapping and slapping and playing chords back in 1991-1992 when most people had never heard of Victor Wooten. I don't play serious anymore, it's just a hobby, I went into technology, but I am telling you, this is the most advanced playing I've seen (not jus the video but all of Charles' works). So good. Congrats!
I’d imagine victor wooten himself is probably the other major competition
No knock to Charles because most people couldn’t do this in 10000 takes, but you have to remember that this form of musicianship is a question of practicing a singular tiny piece of music all day for days or weeks then sitting down and doing 100s of takes until you get one just right.
Not saying “InStA GuItAr BAAD”, just saying it’s its own kind of performance and not the same as people who play live or improvise. I’m sure Charles could play an amazing show if he chose to start a band but it’s not fair to compare 1 minute flex videos to performing musicians who haven’t done the “two weeks practice and then full day of takes for an incredible 1 minute performance” thing, who knows what a lot of amazing modern bassists could do if they tried this format?
The tone is divine and precision of playing is absolutely superb. Thank you again Charles for sharing. Brightened my day!
This is one of the coolest things I seen on bass Charles is a true master
Thank you 🙏🏻
I remember when Davie first hired you for one of his videos, and it seems the student is now the TEACHER. I knew from the first time I saw you, that you weren't going to pass up that opportunity and it's awesome hearing you and about you randomly from other places than UA-cam is just awesome! I almost said to myself that first time, why is Davie willingly giving himself more competition. 😂😅😂
Ok now I need a collab between Charles and Polyphia. Would be so godamn Epic !!!
Clay deserves some spotlight, some kind of bass duel or duet would rock!
Charles is a better musician than polyphia , playing with them would probably make him question why he’s doing music
Charles is a pro-diversity musician. I would absolutley be able to imagine CB and P. doing a troll/shitposting song about being over technical on guitar. LOL@@humanactivated1017 Though I might agree on CB being an all around better musician. :)
Charles in collab with these gays? no, thanks
its polyphia@@Apoz
Now that!!!!!.....That's my favorite bass!!! Perfect sound! And your hands and skills are making it flawless!!!!
dude you gotta make a full version of this
Bro...the amount of talent this man has is insane...
No. This is skill acquired through endless hours of hard work. Talent is like being pretty. Something you got for free.
its all hard work
it's both
@@johnyang799 I guess my point is being called talented is like being told you are lucky.
I've seen the skill/ talent clarification a few times on threads like these, and I get it. But sometimes it becomes a debate over semantics. I don't think that the original commenter's point was to say that Charles is lucky that he can play as amazingly as he does. I think it was a comment on the fact that Charles can do mind blowing with a bass guitar. And that's a fact we ALL agree on.
Absolutely the best bassist I'll see in my lifetime. There's just no way around it at this point, the man's a proper unit.
@@PayneBiggleyL
Dominic LaPointe tho
Pino
Антон давидянц
agreed he is the Matteo of Bass. dude has to have been reincarnated 100 times
You’re one of the only musicians on the “insanely talented guitar/bass” side of UA-cam that I actually watch because your playing is so musical and unique :)
What an execution! Really precise, absolutely clean... including the harmonics! WOW Congrats Man
That sound is absolutely gorgeous
Yeah I love the sound of this bass!!
@@CharlesBerthoud And it's passive.
I swear bass manufacturers have cut a deal with Big Battery.
Being God
There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that Charles is the best bassist on UA-cam. So unbelievably clean and precise, mind boggling how you do it. Simply amazing.
is that because you have some other bassists in mind, are unsure if some unknown bassist is out there, or don't know any bassists besides youtube ones?
@@AfonsodelCBYour last sentence completely ignores “on UA-cam”. They said best on UA-cam. Maybe not true, but Charles is definitely one of the best.
@@mrchung no it doesn't, if they only know youtube bassists it would make sense to specify youtube in their sentence since they can't vouch for more, which is the point of my sentence
@@AfonsodelCB i actually dont think you know what youre saying rn
Lads I’m just trying to appreciate how well done this performance is, fucking hell some of you take shit too literally.
Charles you are really one of the best musician out there! All the best to you keep your passion and inspire the bass and music world . Mutch love
Every time I rewatch this it gets more impressive. Excellent work sir.
I love when I see a notification from this channel because the sound is always so clean and just brings me joy to listen to
The notification or the song?
Jk lol
That was badass Charles! It has taken me 5 days just to learn the intro, I'm almost there!
Congrats!! It's not easy 😅
his board might of been fretless but theres still indicators on the board. Not impressed.
@@JoHn-if6wyI don't see where you posted any videos let alone a better one
@@annamariao3 Post a video of me playing other peoples song? lol
@@JoHn-if6wy i'm also not impressed with your trolling ability. You need more practice.
I love this so much more than the original - you're amazing!!
Man this is amazing and the sound of the fretless bass is awesome!
I always love it when you bust out the fretless! Amazing job btw, super difficult and sounds divine!
man I wish this was there for when Polyphia did a contest not too long ago, would've loved to see them react to this cover. That was so clean.
fantastic as always
please more of these! my mind is blown, rewatching...
You sir are the GOAT
Outstanding Charles, those hands are national treasures!
Your hard work and dedication is really shining through here, you're an inspiration!
Every note is so smooth
You're coming along pretty good on bass. Keep it up.🤣
Needs more practice. Knock off the video games(!)
Fretless bass has the most haunting sound among all the instruments imo.
Amazing video as always.
That was spot on, congratulations! You are from out of this world man.
You killed it, awesome bass tone too.
Absolutely phenomenal as always. Amazing Charles keep up the great work!
I need a 10 hour long version of this
the tone is so trombone champ
Outstanding !.. what a stuggering arrangement
Damn, dude... I've been thoroughly impressed by countless performances of yours before, but this one is legitimately INSANE. 🤯 Playing this lick in any capacity is impressive, but doing so on a fretless bass with absoltuley perfect technique and tone is mind boggling. Mad props, Charles!! 🤘😎
I feel like I have been waiting my whole life for this. Incredible!
that bass looks like ultimate weapon that you have to unlock it
That was wicked!!! I just started listening to Prolyphia and they are all ridiculously talented group!! And then you go and play this on a fretless bass like it was nothing!
Beautiful... Sounds very cool. Good arrangement. Love it
So beautiful to watch and listen indeed! Music to the ears! 💜💜💜
That was more impressive than watching Tim play it himself.
Its super clean, fluid... Sweet ! Good job sir!
I love Polypia, im so glad your covering them
that natural harmonic sequence is otherworldly
You're a beast! I can only imagine the work you put into the instrument. Lemme tell you, every single moment was worth it.
Golly Charles! Love it!
I don't know how many hours you put into this, but it came out pretty damn flawless! Great job Charles!
Thanks Charles for leading me to Polyphia with your first Playing God cover. They're now my favorite band. Also I think you missed your calling as being a bassist in a prog rock band.
That's how I found Polyphia too.
they will start on your metal playlist and end up on your chill playlist 💀💀💀
@helioking4523 polyphia isn't metal 🤓
@@dmytrotsvyntarnyi799 yeh mb... its MATH ROCK 🗿
BEAUTIFUL… this has to be one of your top ten compositions…. Just amazingly beautiful. Really glad I dropped by your Channel again.
I am in awe. Such an impressive display of technical ability and musicality!
I was watching this channel fairly religiously when Sir Charles first got his fretless stainless steel fretboard bass and I thought it had more of niche sound. Now it's now and after taking up bass myself after playing guitar my whole life "learning" bass parts on the lower strings, I realize there's a lot more that goes into playing bass than I had previously appreciated.
I guess what I really mean is- WOW!
this makes an already spooky song sound so dark, it really suits it
I literally kept my mouth opened for the whole minute. The fretless bass makes it feel so genuine
How come I’m not even surprise that you can play this with such ease
Good job man
Just a casual lesson for beginners. 😂
Thank you man, you're awesome!
I fully believe that Charles is on track to becoming one of the best bass players in the entire world.
This is legendary! So cool. Great Job.
Just discovered this, just finished my 4th play through in a row, each time I’m shocked when it abruptly ends, it’s soooo good
Definitely the best bassist of recent times. you are incredible 🤯
It amazes me how this video currently only has 300K. LIKE HOW, it’s incredible that Charles played one of the hardest riffs of the 21st century and did it on a six string bass, and did it on a fretless!!!! Absolutely astonishing
Six String Bass is just a deep Guitar if you think about it.
@@Acer67 Not quite. It is true that for strings tuned to the same note a bass is just an octave below the guitar. But 6 string basses are tuned BEADGC and guitars are tuned EADGBE.
I always start watching out of general interest but am quickly mesmerized by how insanely talented and incredible Charles is at his craft.
i have a soft spot in my heart for bass guitar man, thank you.
Wow this is super impressive! Such a complex piece on a Fretless and that too on a Bass Guitar! Talent of the highest quality! Bravo 🙌👏
the way you got your harmonics to ring out is insane.
Well, it sounds hauntingly beautiful when _you_ play it. Amazing, Charles.
Thank you!!
@@CharlesBerthoudWhy'd you change the video title?
Amazing Charles! You da man!
Awesome man, flawless
The song on its own is on a completely different level but hearing you play it on a 6 string fretless bass adds a new dimension to it.
Thank you for playing this masterpiece!
We need a full version!!
that is so sick, please make a full version I beg you
Чарльз, привет из Беларуси! Ты крут! Спасибо за талантливые каверы и музыку.
Incredible! Would you ever cover something like Meshuggah or Zenith Passage - something really wild and less known? CharlesBerthoud playing Bleed or Algorithmic Salvation would be amazing.
had to watch more then once! very impressive
Absolutely amazing!
Insane, do you think you could play the outro?
Simply beautiful Charles. You played something it took a band to play alone beautifully.
It would have been nicer with a band, these solos always in solitude know from associal
The thumb nail got me! I know Charles can pull it off. When I saw Tim I was like not even!
damn. so much hard work. one of the best!!!!!!
This feller has to be one of the most talented musicians on this planet. I know that's a strong statement but I'm sticking to it!
Okay. Dude. Just stop. Stop it! Knock it off! We get it! You’re the champ! The best! We are mere mortals and we don’t even have a word to describe what you are. You’re amazing. Incredible. Unbelievable. Insanely great. Just really, really good. BTW nice video.
That tone is amazing
Absolutely impressive. Amazing job Charles 😎😁
Hope the guys from Polyphia get to see and hear this.
Awesome, keep up the good work my fellow bass artist.
Grettings and all the good things coming from

I was just playing this song and then this Legend showed me how it's done. Amazing job the fretless bass series are so cool
🔥🔥 love the sound
Amazing and unbelivable !
Juste amazing !
Very beautiful! Happy to see you flow
Probably the best bass player on earth and outside of the bass player community few have heard of him. I wish you millions Charles
It's fantastic, I can't imagine how hard it is!!!
As a guitarist, you win best of all covers.
This is insane!! 🔥
You are one very gifted person. Love your videos ✌️
