Hey Badger! Husker here. Looking forward to seeing you at Camp Randall tonight. I will be like you, allegedly having fun with one thing but secretly watching Matt’s vids. Except mine is a wedding. :( My prediction for the game is my team will lay egg after egg, stink up your stadium then go home with yet another loss. It’s not a game unless our QB’s give the opponent five or more turnovers. Our D is awesome, but not our offense. I hope you enjoy your bowl berth. Good luck with deer season!
I love your channel, I'm an Englisman who visited my son in Portland Maine and he took me to a pond , caught 2 small mouth bass, first time I've ever fished. It was beautiful, even though two ladies watered their horses I was the only one who caught! You are always my go to , thank you for providing the most relaxing and informative information on fishing . Love Portland and love your stuff. Thank you
Beautiful day for some pike fishing. How much you enjoy the fishing is half the fun of watching Matt. Love me some Terminator spinnerbaits for bass and pike.
Thank you, Matt, that was some pretty exciting pike fishing! It's always a pleasure to join you on your fishing treks! Take care and be safe! Matt, I wish you and your family a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
It’s been tough going here this year. They removed a bunch of them from the river, the shallow sloughs I think were hit by winterkill the last couple years and a couple spots got over fished for a few seasons.
@ndyakangler I live in Indiana and have to drive 2.5 hours north to even touch the nearest water with them. I've been a handful of times and have caught 2 pike lol my fiancé just traveled to North Dakota and I'm jealous af I wasn't able to go. The scenery looks amazing up there from all your vids!
All we have like that in SC are some little pickerel in the cold water of the Saluda River coming out of Lake Murray dam. A big one is maybe 4lbs. One day I’ll get up north for some good pike and smallmouth bass fishing!
Hey I want to thank you; last weekend's episode you were catching smallies on that little white swimbait, so last weekend I had a few minutes to kill at the river. I remembered that white was working for you and so I tied on a 3" white and silver flake tube on a worm hook, and on the very first cast, I got swiped, could see the tube go sideways in the clear water, so I gave it one more twitch and ended up hooking into a solid 15" smallie, which for around here, is not bad at all. So thanks for the advice man!
Thanks for once again, taking us/me along! I appreciate your sharing and I am going to slip in one last (according to weather predictions) trip out with spinners to wrassle a toothy, tomorrow afternoon. I haven't tried for them in a long while but watching your vid I realized I did have some of those spinners somewhere so I am going to throw them for a shot at a local NP. Awesome stuff as always, my thanks!
10:22-10:30 is the same way I feel about their smaller cousin, the chain pickerel. I love fishing for chain pickerel during the fall, winter, and spring here in CT. The way they come darting out of structure and vegetation before slamming a jerkbait at the smaller waters I fish from shore get me pumped. They'll follow the lure all the way up to shore. Sometimes a more erratic retrieve will get those "slime darts" to easily hit. There's one special spot at a pond I fish that has a tradition for pickerel to be stalking schools of small bluegills that hang around a submerged limb once the water has gotten warmer in early April. I'll sometimes see the bluegills all of a sudden scatter before coming back to the limb. That's when I know there's bound to be pickerel stalking them before darting in for the kill.
As a Connecticut resident myself, I am the same way. Jerkbaits are my specialty with pickerel in colder water, and once it gets warmer, fluke style swimbaits and topwater lures work best. But I caught my PB at 24" and 2.63lbs this year on a jig. Thought it was a 5lb bass when I hooked it.
I hardly ever get your notifications anymore but I always try and watch when I get a chance! Went on st Clair a couple of weeks ago and let's just say mother nature and musky don't always agree! 😅
Matt, late season fishing is tough. I'm impressed you always find a way to get hookups every time out. In WI this time of year, alot of the fish are migrating deep, so the rocks and edges don't seem to hold much fish after October.
Glad ya had a good day Matt-but one of these days we're all going to see the scenario I think of each time I watch a new video. Out of the blue you're going to hook into something so big, that it even surprises you-not just a PB, but a PB that you don't think you'll ever top. At some point I hope you're blessed with that kind of day. God bless.
Yeah I could tell just looking at my audio files! Last time the road noise was about the same level as my voice, this time it was only about 1/3 as loud.
Always a treat to go along with you! Loved the McNuggets tip. I may have to sacrifice one to verify whether or not the local pike population shares an affinity .. I know the local carp absolutely love junk food (apologies to Ronald).
The areas you typically fish remind me of fishing as a kid growing up on the Canadian Prairies…my home is on the North Shore of Lake Superior now, I wonder if you’d consider fishing the big water someday or do a trip on some of the border waters like Quitico? Love your vids, Cheers from Red Rock, Ontario. 🇨🇦
It’s been a nice time watching this video. Beautiful pike with those distinct markings on their flanks. Also interesting the knack of using a length of stiff fluorocarbon to prevent the spinnerbait from entangling with your line on the cast.
The main purpose of that fluoro was for bite off protection against the pike but it worked great to keep my spinner bait tangle free too! I can’t use a steel leader with those, most of them don’t have an actual loop to tie through just a bend in the wire so a snap on leader isn’t going to stay put.
You are right. It´s been some years since I last used a spinnerbait with both types: with an actual loop and with only a bend in the wire. I remember there used to be issues casting the type without the loop not precisely because it entangled the line, but because the costume of using a snap that would work out of the bend of the wire every three or four casts, which is so annoying!. It was a rookie mistake on my part. they need to be tied directly on your line, and if you´re fishing for pike then you need a stiff length of fluorocarbon resistant to their teeth. On my leaders, I normally use 80 lbs fluorocarbon (brand Reaction Tackle) using a pair of pullers (and power from my arms!) to fix the knots. Perhaps I´ll purchase some 50 lbs fluorocarbon because I am not quite sure I would be able to tie a proper knot with my 80 lbs. Thank you very much Matt!!!
@@ndyakanglerI do the same thing. Seaguar 40-50# Blue Label does me well with Spinnerbaits usually, the way they hook up, it's rarely woofed and line not as likely to get chafed or scraped by them due to the lure shape etc. Best answer I've found anyways. Great video as always
It's the vibration. Fish have a lateral line they sense the uptick in vibration and it draws them in. From little bait fish all up through the food chain
Fall fishing is at its peak in my North Woods also. I have been catching aggressive and hungry Cutthroat trout in the 19 inch to 22 inch range. I have been catching them on white tube worms and green/tan Bitsy Bugs with a trailer. More snow in the mountains expected overnight and ice is only a few weeks away.
You have a hobie, right on, I love my Compass, and I have an outback also! I love the hands free fishing when using the foot pedals! They are very good, but I bet it was hard to fish next to the freeway with all the noise!
I just don’t like how much more it picks up my breathing having the mic tucked under my hat bill lol, but it picked up maybe a quarter of the road noise it did last time when I adjusted the files to the level of my voice.
Just wondering why use a spinnerbait when there doesnt seem to be much for weeds? I've caught allot of pike on them, but due to them being more fragile and fiddly than other baits, I've gotten away from using spinnerbaits unless theres specific reasons that something else wont work.
Great video I always use a trailer hook on my spinners for pike and hook up rate goes way up with so many on the trailer only. Can still use the plastic too just add the hook after. 3/0 trailer hook seems best size
I was looking for some hooks to use for that at one of our local stores but didn’t see any that looked like they’d fit over the hook on the lure. I’ll have to search around online for some.
Thanks for another great video Matt. You commented about trying to point your microphone away from the road noise - I'm pretty sure the GoPro mics are omni-directional which means both of the microphones that make up the unit are facing in all directions. You will pick up a stereo field no matter, but you can't effectively point these microphones away from something.
I record my audio separately with a Zoom H1 and a lapel mic I run up to my hat cam. I usually mount it on top of the GoPro facing the same way so it picks up the same field of view for audio as what the camera sees. It will pick up sound from all directions but whatever the mic is pointing at is what will get picked up the most. For this trip I moved it under my hat bill, basically facing my forehead. It picked up my voice a lot stronger there so that I didn’t have to boost the volume on the audio files as much, which in turn didn’t crank up the road noise as much.
The difference is I’ll have a leader tied on while fishing pike and not end up losing $20 of lures to bite offs. If I try to use a leader smallie fishing I generally don’t catch many of the bigger, smarter fish that a leader will often scare off. What frustrates me smallie fishing is I’ll feel that nice thump expecting a big smallie, but then I’m let down by a slack line with my jig gone and it’s instant disappointment lol.
I did screenshot all those fish to compare them and make sure I wasn’t catching the same one over and over. I couldn’t match any of them up so I’m pretty confident I caught five different fish on this trip at least!
Love the videos man! I live in Texas so we don’t get smallmouth and pike but I’m taking a trip up north today and I will try smallie, walleye, and trout fishing. Your videos are entertaining and helpful!
Just moved to Houston from the Midwest about a year ago. I was just getting the hang of the rivers and the smallie hangouts. Boy do I miss it. Haven't really found any bass spots yet. I'm looking to try the Neches on my next adventure.
I like shorter rods in the kayak and anything over 6’8” gets to be tough to fit in my truck if I put them in the bed. It’s getting harder and harder to find rods with the specs I want, under 7’, and without 2’ of handle behind the reel that makes it impossible to fish sitting down.
Same here! I run two 6’6 Lews Mach 2 spinning rods, and am about to add a St. Croix when the Black Friday deals hit! 6’6 is the sweet spot for casting, jigging, dragging etc. and it fits perfectly in my truck bed!
i too use 6-6 rods a lot as i fish from the sitting position in a smaller boat i have always liked my rod handles to be shorter so as not to catch on things when sitting @@ndyakangler
Great pike fishing love the pike spinning or dead bait but its hard to get one in a day here are n ireland but u could get 3 or 4 on a good day can be hard work but that's pike fishing for u👍🎣
Spinnerbaits are my go-to out here in Western Canada. I’m originally from Québec and I used to fish spinners there for bass. Moved out west 30 years ago and just tried spinners here for pike (there’s no bass in Alberta); best kept secret ! I do see that your retrieve is slower than I’m used to but I think it’s a great approach because they’re slightly slower as the temp drops. I’ll try that next year ! Thx !
same thing I said on your jackhammer video. try a mod-fast rod for spinners and chatterbait. it gives just a little more time for the rod to load up before you set.
Daredevle would have just gathered weeds on its treble hook in this soupy mess. But the red/white one is a classic. Same with Johnson Silver Minnow spoon, which you can fish weedless. There’s been a return to spoons for walleye in the past several years, too.
Highly recommend a trailer hook on a spinnerbait. It’s taken me from about 50% hookup ratio like you said to near 100%. You can also increase the profile of the bait by putting your trailer worm or swimbait on the trailer hook instead of the main hook.
Big fan of your videos. I would love to hear what month in you are fishing in these clips to know what to throw out near my house at different points in the season 😊
Caught many a Pike on white spinnerbaits up here in Northern Michigan and as I Frog fish a lot for Bass I also hook them on occasion with those rubber frogs which is a good way to destroy a $10 plus Ish Monroe Frog which is my favorite. I see you grab those nasty toothed critters under the gills which is something I hate to do after seeing my best friend lose some meat on 3 fingers when a big 38 incher flipped out of his grip and locked those teeth on him. The ER Doctor sewed him up but he sure has some nice looking scars to show his Buddies. Great video.
I tried the spinnerbait again for pike on the lake I usually fish smallies on. I caught several pike but I was surprised not a single bass on the spinnerbait.
It’s ok, it sticks out like a sore thumb lol. The old nail came off a week or so ago I’m just a couple weeks behind on uploads. It finally looks a lot better though.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BassMang! ! ! ! ! (or PIKEMang in this instance😛) this vid is 11hrs old, why didnt i get a noti??? i have ALL noti's on 😭😭😭 5:25 that first pike followed your lure right up to the kayak .. he might as well jumped in an started paddling for you lol 🤣🤣🤣 14:45 next time you hit that spot, bring some nuggies with you... lmaooo 😂 thx so much for sharing bro, see ya on the next... stay safe mang .. buh bye 👋😁
UA-cam is weird with the notifications. It will send me them for my own videos about 50% of the time, sometimes right away other times it’s two weeks after I uploaded them.
Saturday morning fishing video with Matt. Oh yes, how sweet it is. 😜 Do you have any newish updated Kayak Setup videos? I scrolled but only saw older videos.
The last kayak setup video I did was several years ago. Not much has changed in the Tarpon aside from adding the Power Pole but I did a video on that too. I’ll film a new one some time. It seems every time I get the kayak all cleaned up and have all my gear with the fishing is good enough that it’s tough to take a break for an hour and two and film the kayak.
It would be great to hear your thoughts on gear and your explanation as to why you chose what you have. I've never fished from or even been out on a kayak. But your videos make it plenty appealing. Are you editing out the "OOPS" moments, or are we pretty well getting the straight dope? @@ndyakangler
Did you have to get your BASS X replaced because of the reel seat? I just purchased one with the green and red logo and watched a video stating that there’s and issue and most of them needed replacing.
Mine are the older models, I have several and haven’t had any issues with them. I heard they’re re-designing them for next year so hopefully they go with something more like the old ones.
@@ndyakangler thanks. I’ve only had mine for about two weeks so far. I’ve used it and it feels great, but fish catching around here is pretty much done until the ice forms. So next year will be the test.
Do u always lift and crank with the spinnerbait? I've noticed u do that with like small swimbaits too... Almost like jiggy kind of retrieve... thanks and love the vids 👌
Where do the River smallmouth go in the winter? Only found a bunch of small ones last weekend. I know you've said they go towards lakes in your other videos but theres no lakes attached to the river.
On stretches of river that don’t lead into deeper water I just look for those slower spots where there’s a current break or it at least slows down. Sun exposure can mean a lot as far as picking spots this time of year too, water an extra degree or two warmer will be more likely to hold fish. They won’t be super shallow but maybe not super deep either. On the upper Mississippi I’d find plenty of 10ft deep holes but the areas 5-7ft deep seemed to hold the most fish.
It’s 34”. The Tarpon is only 30” but yes it does feel much more spacious to me. That pedal unit takes up a lot of space and the Hobie is just not ergonomically designed as well as the Tarpon is.
You've gotten me back into fishing! I even got a kayak so I don't have to fish from shore anymore! Your videos are amazing! I can even rewatch them and it feels like new again! Keep doin what you're doing! Is it ever too cold to fish? I've got some rivers near by but it's getting cold here in MN and I still wanna fish but don't know where to look during the cold days
I enjoy watching you fish, can you give some insight as to how and why you fish each bait the way you do? Most of my baits I usually just cast wait a bit and retrieve. Would be interesting to hear what your strategy is. Thanks@!
A lot of lures I like to pause or let it sink and sit on the bottom a second or two to make it look like a dying baitfish or whatever the lure is supposed to be. With the spinnerbait I like to raise it up quickly to get the blades moving then kill it and let it flutter down. It’s often when I’m letting it sink that the pike sitting on the bottom watching darts forward and grabs it. Something like a jig or ned rig small hopped along looks like a minnow or small baitfish picking algae off the bottom. Twitching the hollow body frog tries to imitate their swimming motion. I just try to replicate what I’ve seen the natural forage do.
That’s one reason why I don’t use a steel leader with a spinnerbait it will slide around the wire. I’ve never had my line slip tying directly to the lure. I just make sure the knot is good and tight.
Good Morning All
Out deer hunting the Wisconsin opener, yet here I am watching Matt catch fish!
Yep, no deer, so time to have some fun

Nothing like a fall fishing day full of aggressive fish. Gotta love it.
there is something so satisfying about spinner bait fishing...takes me back to my childhood.

Same here! I run two 6’6 Lews Mach 2 spinning rods, and am about to add a St. Croix when the Black Friday deals hit! 6’6 is the sweet spot for casting, jigging, dragging etc. and it fits perfectly in my truck bed!
i too use 6-6 rods a lot as i fish from the sitting position in a smaller boat i have always liked my rod handles to be shorter so as not to catch on things when sitting

That road is noisy😂 but awsome video lovely pike looked a nice day too🐊🎣
Wonder if the road noise helps keep the bait and small fish stirred up and moving, which helps Pike fishing?
Nah....they're used to it.
I use trailer hooks on my spinner and Buzz baits. It really increases my hookup ratio.
Great pike fishing love the pike spinning or dead bait but its hard to get one in a day here are n ireland but u could get 3 or 4 on a good day can be hard work but that's pike fishing for u👍🎣
Great fishing action 👍👍🦈🦈
Nice video I like your fishing technique
Another fantastic video!
Thx !
Spinnerbait is my go to lure up here in NY
same thing I said on your jackhammer video. try a mod-fast rod for spinners and chatterbait. it gives just a little more time for the rod to load up before you set.
Is that sweet briar lake??
Have you ever tried the classic Eppinger Daredevle spoon for pike? It's my most successful pike lure and it seems like few people us it anymore.
I haven’t in years but that’s what my grandpa and I would troll behind his old boat when I was a kid.
❤Great day of fishing. What happened to your thumb?
I smashed it in my truck door a couple months ago.
Ouch! I'm glad it didn't break. My sister in law did that, and it broke. Thanks for responding, and have a great Thanksgiving!!!!
Oh no!!!!. I just watched your other video, wacky worm, and you explained the whole thing. 🤦♀️ sorry to bother you about it. 😬
It’s ok, it sticks out like a sore thumb lol. The old nail came off a week or so ago I’m just a couple weeks behind on uploads. It finally looks a lot better though.
Great video as usual. You would definitely benefit from some NRS Boundary knee-high neoprene boots. I have a pair for my yak, love them!
I throw Mc nuggets out the window whenever I order them. For they are inedible.
Oooo oooo, catfishing with McNuggets!!! You can do it!
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BassMang! ! ! ! ! (or PIKEMang in this instance😛)
this vid is 11hrs old, why didnt i get a noti??? i have ALL noti's on 😭😭😭
5:25
that first pike followed your lure right up to the kayak .. he might as well jumped in an started paddling for you lol 🤣🤣🤣
14:45
next time you hit that spot, bring some nuggies with you... lmaooo 😂
thx so much for sharing bro, see ya on the next...
stay safe mang ..
buh bye 👋😁
UA-cam is weird with the notifications. It will send me them for my own videos about 50% of the time, sometimes right away other times it’s two weeks after I uploaded them.
Nice catching bro 😊
Good job! The spinner bait works best for me. Last time two weeks ago I caught 8 pikes.
Is it just me or how do you cast that so smooth and far?
What are the water temps there this time of year?
They’re high 30’s now, closer to 50 when I filmed this.
OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORRRNNNINNNGGGG OHHH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAYYYYY
How are there not more subs for this legend!
Another great saturday
Saturday morning fishing video with Matt. Oh yes, how sweet it is. 😜
Do you have any newish updated Kayak Setup videos?

Always on timeee
I like the MacNugget theory.
A lot of the time I do if I’m not fishing it over thick weeds. Pike like that stop and go retrieve.
@@ndyakangler ahhhhh ok awesome appreciate the feedback !!! If ya Ever wanna come to the east coast for some giant Stripers reach out 👍
It’s crazy this spring I took a spinnerbait out with pike hopes and ended up slayin prespawn smallies never thought they’d be on them
Where do the River smallmouth go in the winter?
Thank you for the tip! Happy Thanks giving!@@ndyakangler
Great vid! What is the width of Hobie? 34? Seems tighter than your other one.
Cool bro😊 thanks for pike fishing 😁 maybe next time try to use bigger bait for get the biggest trophy 😁
Quick question, every time I tie on to a spinnerbait, my line slips down the wire. Is there a way to prevent that from happening?
You could buy a brand that has a closed line tie. Googan makes one that has a little rubber band but it falls off kinda easy
That’s one reason why I don’t use a steel leader with a spinnerbait it will slide around the wire. I’ve never had my line slip tying directly to the lure. I just make sure the knot is good and tight.
