    I've always loved. 22 shorts and ear protection isn't even needed. Nothing like a quiet day in the woods!

    You mentioned storing your ammo, for long term storage, I used a vacuum packer which takes the oxygen and moisture out when sealing. Make sure you label with caliber, grain weight and date.

      So glad to see a fellow squirrel hunter chiming in. You know just how much fun squirrel hunting can be, and the pride that comes with owning a fine rifle like your bolt action. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing. I am planning on doing a fox squirrel hunt with one of my .22's right after our deer season ends. Take Care, and Happy New Year!

    You’ve got me cleaning my 22s and going to pawn shops looking for 581s. Keep up the good work. My 22s are CZ 452, ruger 1022, Marlin 39A, | also have a european made cheapo 60-70 dollar clip fed bolt action with no identification on it other than m-02 and 1988. Wish l knew what it was. Shoot’s accurately and my daughters first rifle, a compact little single shot.

      That's interesting. I'll do a little research and get back to you on that rifle. Keep looking for those Remingtons, they're great little shooters if they have been maintained. You'll run across one sooner or later, but also don't disregard the Rem. 582 tube fed rifle if you happen to spot one.

    You people should check out the Model 69A and 72A. Both were started in the 30's and were cheap version of the 52. My 69A shoots extremely well. The 72A was the 69A but with a tubular feed rather than a clip. Both are capable of shooting sparrows in the eye. I used to do that when I was younger. My eyes are not there anymore, but you put that rifle into the right shooters' hands, it is a real pleaser. My Dad left his in the trunk of his car for years before he gave it to me. I refinished the stock and had it reblued. It came out nice. It still shoots great. My Dad shot so many jackrabbits with it, he thought he broke the shocks on his car. He just left them in the trunk for weeks, months in the winter. Then, he took them down to the courthouse and collected a bounty on them. I think he got a quarter a piece. This was about 1957-8, so a quarter was worth much more then. A gallon of gas cost a quarter.

    Store your ammo in an ammo can with a good rubber gasket. Toss a couple desiccant bags in the can and stash it in the back of your closet and it will last damn near forever.
    My Granpa stored his with a small mesh bag of rice. It seemed to work as all the ammo I got of his after he died was still like new but nowadays we have access to little desiccant bag all over the place! Just about anything you buy will have a couple in the box. I save em in a glass jar and will use em in my ammo cans and even in my opened powder jugs.

    ah.. the Remington 581. My very first gun when I was 14! That gave me a flashback. Its the gun I learned how to clean, respect, safety, and how to shoot. The wood grain on the stock even looks just like yours! Wish I still had it. Got that gun back in 1980. Thanks for video

      The 581 was my first rifle as well. I still have it, but it's not the one in this video. I got mine brand new after working as a dishwasher at a restaurant for two weeks, meanwhile earning enough money to buy it and some ammo. I got that rifle in 1978-9, and I think it cost me around $80.00 at the time.

    I bought my 581 in 1967 too. I was home on my first leave, which happened to coincide with squirrel season. The 581 has the best trigger of any .22 I've ever shot. A very accurate rifle, I regularly get one hole groups at 50 yards. I usually shoot PMC Target ammo with it, but they are getting hard to find now, so I'm trying some Aguila ammo to see which is most accurate. I've enjoyed many a day in the woods with my 581!

    As far as squirrel hunting goes I heard of a trick where you rub the grated sides of 2 quarters together and it mimics the sound of squirrel cutting nuts. Ive never tried it while hunting but it did try it with 2 quarters and it does sound like it to me. It's said to draw other squirrels near

    first 22 Rifle I bought was when not quite 8 yo was A crackshot 22 with some long rifles and couple box of round nose lead 22 short..
    Trading post where we sold our furs to did indeed have its beater trade in and old military rifles.
    Beat to hell on outside, stock held together by tacks and solid brass wire.
    snow shoes, cotton tails grouse geese ducks woodcocks and yes a deer or two maybe five Mainenwhitetails all head shots, the innards like new.
    Fox, coon , bobcat but our gray squirrels were what it excelled at.
    could buy 22 shells singly, 5-10 .
    made money as maine had bountys on crows porcupines.. Used bpx callets or just two wuarters to call. Quarters were silver then sound different than todays but new work.surround quarter in thumb and forefinger other fingers cupped and tap with another quarter.
    Only fox squirrels taken was in relatives Arkansas woods. one fall day got three jet black ones and two reds.
    No squirrl hunts in Wa. As protected greys and tiny euro reds is all we have.
    thanks for memories

    Merry Christmas and congratulations on one thousand subscribers! I'm sure that you will get many more in 2021. I remembered two other .22 short only rifles that I had many years go - both were Browning semi-autos, one feeding about 15 rounds through the side of the stock and the other feeding 5 rounds (I think) through the tang. Looking forward to watching many more of your videos and wishing you all the best for the New Year.

    CCI makes a .22short as well as another round called .22 CB Short which is subsonic. Aguila also still makes a HV .22short. Aguila also makes the SniperSubSonic which is a big lead bullet in a short cartridge, i believe 60gr. Aguila's Colibri and Super Colibri are also neat Subsonic rounds for squirrels because theyre so quiet but they arent true .22 shorts.

    • @CumberlandOutdoorsman
      @CumberlandOutdoorsman  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, there are other manufacturers that make the .22 short, but as far as I know none other than CCI makes a short hollow point. I think at one time or another Federal or Remington produced a short hollow point, but that is long in the past. Perhaps Aguila will offer it in a hollow point since they also specialize in rimfire loadings.

  • @jeffreyelliott622
    @jeffreyelliott622 2 роки тому

    Those CCI .22 shorts are 29 gr. if I'm correct !!!

    • @CumberlandOutdoorsman
      @CumberlandOutdoorsman  2 роки тому +1

      You would be correct if you are referring to solid point ammo. The .22 short hollowpoint is a bit lighter at 27 grains. It's rather unfortunate that Winchester, and Remington no longer make .22 short hollowpoint ammo. Thank goodness for CCI!

    • @CumberlandOutdoorsman
      @CumberlandOutdoorsman  4 роки тому

      All of my vintage .22's shoot short, long, and long rifle ammunition. There are very few rifles that are strictly chambered for the .22 short only. The magazines I use will hold all three .22 rimfire loadings. If you look at the barrel markings, it should clearly say short, long, or long rifle. I do own a Winchester model 52, and a Marlin model 60 that will only cycle long rifle loadings. Thanks for the inquiry, and for watching.
