Приєднався 19 лют 2017
I am an avid outdoorsman that has been involved in outdoor activities since the late 1970's. I recently started making videos as a hobby, to share my experiences and knowledge of hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and outdoor equipment such as fishing gear, sporting guns and hunting ammo, archery equipment, and other outdoor related gear and gadgets as they pertain to outdoor activities. I hope to relay a message of true sportsmanship, and ethical hunting and fishing practices to anyone that enjoys the great outdoors.

In this video I will be refurbishing the same little rifle by refinishing the stock, the receiver, and filling in the badly drilled holes in the stock. I will mount a scope to see how well it can shoot at various ranges, and checking for functionality. Come and check out how well one of these relatively inexpensive rifles can perform.

Is the .222 Remington Still Useful?
Переглядів 8 тис.3 місяці тому
Occasionally I break out my Remington 788 chambered in .222, and use it on varmints. In this video you will see how effective this little cartridge still is. Accurate, quick, powerful, and yet mild mannered to shoot. In my book the little .222 is a gem of a cartridge.

THANK YOU very much for this video
❤ Yup I’m watching this video for the second time so I can add this comment. I just purchased a used 1973 Remington Speedmaster 552 22 rifle with scope off an Internet gun site. It’s coming to me from Alberta to Ontario by Canada Post. I’d like to see you disassemble yours all the way down to the rubber buffer so I can see the orientation of the buffer and retainer in detail. No need to remove the barrel fastener bolts or anything. I just want to see inside the receiver. So I can make sure mines all clean and put together correctly so it’s ready to go, and then I can mount the scope and cite it in for 🐿️ squirrels. 😏
I can’t wait for you to do a video on cleaning the Remington 552 Speedmaster so I can see where and how that rubber buffer and retainer fits together. I am going to have it by July 30, 2024 coming from Alberta to Ontario Canada Post. I’m going to strip it down to clean,it check it,assemble it. Mount the scope that came with it on and cite it in. And then go get me some squirrels. 🐿️ 😏
Dogman
That was a pretty close vote for sure. I hope you do a video on a complete teardown cleaning and inspection of your Remington 552 because I got a used 1973 Remington Speedmaster 552 22 coming in the mail and I want to make sure it’s assembled correctly, paying special attention to the bolt rubber buffer and how the retainer is orientated. I want to clean and inspect mine before I mount the scope and site it in. Thanks 😊
I hope you take the Remington 552 Speedmaster. I just bought one and I’d like you to do a video on teardown cleaning and checking the rubber buffer pad and its retainer. So I can determine whether mines assembled correctly being a used old gun. Well, I’d like that no matter which gun you take out hunting 😊 thanks.
Great vid great gun my 99c is jamming you could really fix it with ur expertise
Did anybody else see the 🐿️ that went by in front of the lumber pile? 🤭
I hate to think what the acetone is doing to the lens coatings?
and they closed the australian factory down, just as the ammo shortage started around covid kicked off. sadly.
my dad past away about 6 yrs ago and i have recently acquired a 1906 first edition because of the smooth pump handle. The stock has a crack that runs down the middle and off to the side about half way but is still sturdy. Besides that very little pitting at all. i have not put a inspection camera down the barrel yet but from the condition of the rifle I'm sure its in good condition. the bluing cold be restored but im trying to decide if i should try it myself or take it somewhere. really enjoyed your video thanks.
The distortion is too much to discern anything. Obviously there are coyotes all over the nation, but I've heard things other than the usual subjects. I'm in east Tennessee near the state borders with North Carolina and Virginia and have had several experiences in the treeline. Don't take it lightly, lots of people disappear.
sir, tennesee has been a hotspot for large canines that walk on all fours like any other dog but also have the ability to stand, walk, and run quick as lightning on two feet comfortably. They go by many names, recently its Dogman. They are well known in the northern u.s. They have been around since ancient times but were rare to hear of any encounters until recently. Due to the advancements of technology and everyone walking around with a computer in their pocket, platforms for people to share their encounters of them, we are only now beginning to learn about them again. The natives had words for them and were very aware of their existence, as were Europeans. They rarely attack humans, might try to scare you outta their territory, that's not to say they wont though. Dont shoot at one if you see it. Just walk away and leave the area. Where theres one, theres more you dont see, aiming your gun or firing will most certainly be the last thing you do. They are highly intelligent and are believed to recognize what guns are. If you would like to learn more listen to Dogman encounters radio on youtube. Its a no bs channel with people calling in from all across the country telling their story uninterrupted . Vic cundiff hosts the show and is an awesome person. Coyotes have been known to run with them, probably because of their scavenging tendencies looking for scraps from their kill. There are a few audio recording with coyotes yipping and howling then you hear a more powerful larger lung capacity animal howl that shuts everything around it up. They tend to run ranges where there are large wildernesses, forests that span large distances or interconnect others that do. It is believed they are a migratory species that follows the game migrations. Especially in Appalachia region of the U.S. Some places they show up same time yr after yr while being completely absent the rest of the yr. Be safe
Those are great accurate pieces of art
Wonderful job on the restoration it turned out beautiful . It is ready for the next hundred years.
Seems a bit like gold plating a Yugo, but to each his own.
Maybe, but the main difference is that Yugos are practically non-existent, meanwhile these older Bushnell's and Tasco scopes are still around and going strong.
Always wondered how to change parallax on scopes. I knew at one time some could be changed sending to manufacture. Thanks for all the information.
Thanks a lot for your recent video on adjusting parallax in rifle scopes! I have a Bushel banner 3x9-32 and a Tasco 3x9-32 laying in a drawer that I took off of big game rifles but the parallax was too bad for accurate use on my .22 rifles. Both are old Japanese made so I gave it a try right away this morning. Both worked out great with no parallax and good focus at 35-50 yards which I shoot regularly! Now I just have to decide which of my .22’s will get the opportunity to try them out! 😁 Thanks again for all your .22 series videos!
That's great! Just reading your comment made my day because I was able to help someone through a video. 😊Thanks so much for your comments.
No apologies needed. We appreciate the time you put into these informative videos.
I wanted to let my viewers know because I felt a bit guilty.
Did your gun warm up ? Nice 2 nd. Group.
I'll give u a miss mate I can't hear anything
Excellent video. I do have one comment. It is better to use a chamber swage, rather than a chambering reamer to eliminate the burr on the chamber. Thereby removing as little metal as possible.
The parallax issue is why I almost always put a scope with a side parallax or adjustable objective on my rimfires. Most folks don't even think about this issue, but it is more important on rimfires than most centerfires. I have set up a Remington 581 with a centerfire vari-II 2-7x just like you show here.
Hey Tom! Thank you for the great content as always you are very detailed. I just viewed a episode by Hickok45 and he was talking about some UA-cam restrictions on gun sponsorship. Will this affect your channel? I hope not because I really have enjoyed all of your videos and everything you do on your channel. Please reply back and let me know. Stephen Milligan from Georgetown Kentucky
As far as I can tell, I have only had one video that got limited monetization. I don't understand why, because all I did was restore and refinish an old Marlin 60 in that video. Perhaps it was because I filled two holes in the stock and they somehow considered that as "altering" the gun??????
Remington 788 is a great gun. I got one years ago but it’s in 308 Win. Very accurate!! I have several Tasco scopes. Tasco was here in Miami about 10 miles away. I would get scopes that had problems for free and Tasco would fix them up and sometimes they would just replace it with a new one. That was in the 70s and 80s. Don’t know where they are now. Good to see you back and good luck on the 788 hunt. Richard
Congratulations man, you have as much experience as beauty in your work, and that doesn't come from gray hair but from years of commitment and effort. Greetings from Laredo Mexico.
Tom, the .22LR has been a big part of my life where shooting and hunting is concerned. I've enjoyed all your .22 videos. Thanks for that!
Thanks.
Great video/Great info.
Awesome and thank you for sharing. Is acetone the best solvent to use? Will isopropyl alcohol work? Do the solvents have any negative effect on the lens coatings?
I have never used alcohol, but I don't think it would be very effective. Acetone has never damaged my lenses or their coatings. After it evaporates the lens still has the same bluish or reddish coating it had before I started.
Good info. Can you do a video on peep sights?
Why not just buy a rimfire scope?
I hope your roofer wasn't a pain in the ass like the one I hired a few months back.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I actually had a positive experience.
I think you would be really impressed with SK standard plus 50 yd groups through my cz 457’s which I have two of one with standard barrel and one target barrel one hole groups if you do you’re part thanks for another great video
Great Tips Did Not Know You Could Do That Cumberland Outdoorsman 😊😀😎👍🏼👍🏼
Cumberland Outdoors, I have been around rifle scopes since the 1960’s. I have never studied then but, I do know about parallax and just bought the proper one for the proper distances I would be shooting. I never knew the scope could be adjusted by this method for parallax. As old as I am I still learn things. Thank you.
Thank you , most invaluable information
Excellent video. Thanks!
Thank you for another informative video. Your channel makes me feel like I'm back home.
Thx for a very usefull vid. And for the info on nitrogen filled scopes at the end
This is absolutely something you should not do, a rimfire scope can be bought for less than $50 and if you look around you can find a used one for half that price certainly preferable to doing what you suggest
Yep, this is a good way to lose your nitrogen gas fill. I just learned to always center my crosshair in the vision field. But this should keep the scope warranty people guessing at the factory. 😆
I have done this on older scopes that I wanted to mount on my rimfires. Never ever had a problem. Yes, you can buy one of those Chinese made so called rimfire scopes, but as I stated in this video, you can correct the parallax on a good quality Japanese made scope without a hitch. No nitrogen loss, no damage to the lens coating in all the ones I have on my rimfires, and when I get done with one, it tightens up my groups, and you can't tell anything has ever been done to the scope. I have never had one of these scopes fog up due to nitrogen loss, even in the humid conditions we have here in Tennessee. That being said, if you don't feel comfortable doing this........then don't.
I have a 22 mag scope on my 22 lr, I need to check and see where it's "sweet spot" is
Thank you, I had one scope that the cross hair was dancing around!
Awesome video, very informative. Is this procedure the same for variable power scopes?
I am fairly certain you can. I really need to follow up with another video covering this.
Seems to me that wouldn’t do the coating on the lens any good! Acetone is a very strong chemical but I’m no chemist.Good video thou
Good point, and well worth considering. On the ones I have adjusted, I did not notice any damage to the lens coating.
I think I would like the 582 more than my 581.
I have a bunch of old Redfield and Weaver scopes I'd like to try this on. No worries about the acetone leaking into the tube? Thanks for the video.
Great question. I would first of all make sure they need to be adjusted. If you are concerned about the acetone getting into the scope tube, then don't use as much of it. Personally, I have never had a problem with it leaking inwards. If it should ever get past the objective ring threads, then your scope is already leaking out nitrogen. Acetone evaporates very quickly and it shouldn't leave any residue.
Will that work on varible power scopes?
Great question. To answer your question....yes it will, but certain models are harder to manipulate. It all depends on the adhesive they used.
