    Whether you’re working out of a professional studio, a dedicated home space, or anywhere in between, chances are you’ve encountered the following scenario: the mix is sounding fantastic, and you’re convinced it’s complete until you take a listen in your car or some other space. Why does this happen? The surprisingly simple answer is that the room itself isn’t acoustically balanced. Your mix may be phenomenal within that room, but how it sounds elsewhere is anyone’s guess. Nobody wants to deal with that risk, which is why IK Multimedia’s ARC System supplies a one-stop shop for comprehensive room correction that works with any space. Sweetwater’s premier tone technologist, Mitch Gallagher, explains the system, how it works, the science behind it, and why room-correction measures are critical to nailing your final mix. Hi Mitch, this is the best video on ARC4 I have found on UA-cam. It would be great if you could load several profiles into the ARC4 box and select these profiles via the box instead of having to use the software.

    I've had one for a month now and can confirm it works very well. It identified and evened out a room mode in my room, and corrected a deficiency in the midrange response of my monitors. The difference between correction-on and correction-off in bass and midrange response, as well as stereo imaging and separation, is very noticeable on my Dynaudio BM5mk3 monitors in a mid-sized, treated room.

    Great video, I’m from The Netherlands, and yes ordered one from Thomann. But what I don’t understand is, why choose a target preset. If I have measured my room, for a flat curve. Why should I choose a target response? To, maybe get another response curve for + 1.5 dB in the low range? While I’m mixing on a flat curve.

    It should have digital input. The analog input adds latency.

    • @matthewmixes7780
      @matthewmixes7780 3 місяці тому +6

      No, this system is designed for studio optimization which prioritizes a "sweet spot" single listening position. With live audio, you are optimizing for the entire coverage area.

    I use a YAMAHA subwoofer and Fostex nearfield monitors. The signal goes from my MACKIE BIG KNOB through the YAMAHA to the monitors. Is it possible to use the ARC studio with a subwoofer as well?

    • @jergervasi3331
      @jergervasi3331 Місяць тому

      Yup. Inset the ARC box right after the Big Knob. BTW, it's also a good way to get your subwoofer level dialed in perfectly. If you see the measurement has a TON of bass in its analysis, turn the sub down, and vice versa.

    As always, great video Mitch! Dumb newbie question. So, none of this would matter with headphones when mixing, correct? I’m thinking because you are getting sound directly to the headphones thus room conditions would not affect the sound. Am I making any sense? 😬🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @robertovaquerobazan9824

    Thanx Mitch!!!! Question, I use 2 sets of monitors in my studio. My main pair of Art RM5s and a pair of Avantone MixCubes to A/B with. I would nly want to use the ARC on the RM5s and not the Cubes. How flexible are the routing options?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for watching! The Arc Studio hardware has stereo XLRs in and stereo XLRs out, and a bypass switch on front. So, depending on how you’re switching monitors, it would be easy to bypass the processing when you use the second set of speakers. You can also easily switch the processing in the software to either bypass or to call up a different profile for the second set. But the actual signal routing would need to be handled by the rest of your system.
      Hope this helps,
      Mitch

    Hi,Mitch,does the,ik multimedia eliminate room noise?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  3 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for watching and for your question! No, Arc Studio is not intended to remove or control noise. Its purpose is to correct frequency issues in your room, and as a side benefit, to provide alternate monitor emulations for referencing your tracks and mixes.
      Hope this helps,
      Mitch

    I wonder, if after letting the software analyze the room, I can add my audiogram from my audiologist to produce an implied flat sound to accommodate for my hearing loss?

    • @PippPriss
      @PippPriss Місяць тому +1

      Just in theory - couldn't you do that anyways? Because no matter what room you are in, the dips and bumps in frequency will remain much likely the same. You do not need a flat reference for adjusting for your hearing losses, because even in an acoustically messy room, the same dips and bumps of your hearing apply. 🙂

    @JoseFerreira-zb7wh 3 місяці тому

    Is there any parametric customization available in eq?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  3 місяці тому

      Hi JoseFerreira-zb7wh, thanks for the question! The ARC Studio can act as a standalone solution after being calibrated using the ARC 4 software. However, you can keep the Studio plugged in and make adjustments using the software at any time. This allows you to tweak the curves, make user defined presets, change what speakers you are using, etc. Very cool set-up!

    • @sweetwater

      Hello, Quinlan.Monroe! Yes. Just connect your system so that ARC System can measure and correct your Left and Right speakers, with the inclusion of the subwoofer. ARC System will correct the subwoofer frequency ranges as well, considering its emission part of the Main Left and Right monitors. Give us a shout and we can discuss in more depth!

    Quick question. I have a single QSC 12.2 speaker that I use to monitor my fractal FM9 when dialing in presets. It sits on a pole in my studio room in the same listening position. Could I utilize this hardware to feed into my QSC so that when I’m dialing in my patches, the sound I’m hearing is flat (or at least room corrected)?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi, thanks for your interest! Yes, you could use the ARC system with your setup. You’d just need to run the software to configure it first - so, if you don’t already have an audio interface with at least one phantom power-enabled preamp for the measurement mic, you’d need to get one of those as well. Once the configuration is loaded onto the hardware, you can run it in between your Fractal and your QSC speaker.
      Hope this helps a bit - feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again!

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  2 місяці тому

      HI jakeah1175, great question! The IK MTM speakers do have the ARC calibration system built into them, but they do not quite give the flexibility of control and software interface like the ARC studio does. They are a little more straight forward and plug and play.

    • @sweetwater

      Thanks for watching! Arc Studio will work in any room, but be aware that it is only designed to address frequency-dependent issues in the room. It is not designed to address reflections, RT60, phase issues, etc. Those types of things would need to be handled by acoustic treatment.

    Where is the Harman target curve? That is the most commonly used curve for reference tuning. That needs to be added to the target curves asap for this to be worthwhile

    • @PippPriss
      @PippPriss Місяць тому

      I assume you have this from Julian Krause's review. The Harmann target curve is ONLY applicable to an optimized headphone response, which is all together a different experience than listening via studio monitors.
      Harmann has a great article where they explain the science behind the Harmann target curve and the results in it slowly becoming an industry-norm FOR HEADPHONES. ARC as a software should eventually have the Harmann target curve, since through the software you are not bound exclusively to using the hardware unit, but you can just use the ARC software in the DAW and use headphone, but ARC Studio in itself is not designed around headphone usage, but rather having studio monitors connected.
      But, that said: if you have not watched Julian Krauses review, he showed some customized EQ tweaks which pretty closely resemble the Harmann target curve.

    The big with the ARC Studio system isn't technical. It's IK Multimedias buisness practises! They won't sell you the box only!!!! If you want to switch from SoundID to ARC they force you to waste money on buying their mic, despite the fact that the software allow you to use your excisting Sonarworks high quality microphone.
    If you want to run multiple boxes, for a multi monitor setup, you're forced to waste money on multiple unnecissary mics (atr $50-60 a pop) as well. This is BAD!
    I'd love to buy the ARC Studio, but NOT if I'm being ripped off!
    I've written IK Uultimedia and complaines about this practice. I urge more people to do the same. Maybe that can make IK Multimedia get its act together, and let us buy the box (and software) separately.
