You two are the best. I've been getting out if bed by rolling onto my side then sitting up and it really helps. I have severe lower back pain which effects the way I walk so I really am careful about bending to much in the morning. Your videos are so informative. Thank you for giving so much great advice and how to help ourselves right at home. You two always have the best information which is so helpful. I'm grateful for all your suggestion and all the knowledge you share. Thank you Bob and Brad.
I suffered with lower back pain for most of my 30's and into my 40's. It was worst first thing in the morning. Today in my 60's I have little to none after making some changes. We got rid of our waterbed which is always too soft no matter how much water you add, and I also stretch before I get out of bed in the morning, doing the roll to one side and slide my legs off of the bed as you demonstrated here. For the past 8+ years I've been sleeping on a Sleep Number bed which was a huge game changer. I love that I can adjust it to whatever firmness I need. No more backache in the morning! :)
Thanks for this information. Never thought of why morning was so painful on the back. You two bring everything down to a very simple explanation. And I love your coffee mugs and green ball. Thanks
Thanks for this great advice! I've been doing stretching exercises in the mornings straight after getting out of bed and I recently hurt my back quite badly during one of these sessions. Now I know why - and I know to avoid doing anything like that first thing in the morning.
I have a stiff back in the mornings and have hurt it badly in the mornings. I have reduced this stiffness significantly by doing cat cows as soon as I get off bed. This has increased my morning mobility and functionality. But I have to warn that I don’t have any structural issues like herniated disks or such.
Great information. Since retiring in the spring of 2021 I started doing a morning stretch routine before breakfast and have been experiencing more low back pain than usual. On the mornings I don't stretch first thing - less pain.Think I will change my routine.
Thanks so much for this very valuable tip - one I’m definitely passing on to my grandchildren and kids! I’m from the old school (Jane Fonda) era that believed in “no pain, no gain” (high impact aerobics, etc.) and pushed my body a lot and have certainly paid the price! I wish you’d been around in 1992 when I was first injured. Thanks again - Merry Christmas to you and yours from a grateful viewer!
Lyme disease also typically causes extreme back and joint pain in the morning, degenerative disc disease and arthritis. Lyme patients have back and joint pain any time of the day, but it can be especially severe upon waking in the morning. I rarely see doctors of any discipline address the Lyme disease and co-infections epidemic, but it's estimated that there are one million new cases every year in the US alone. When the cause of back pain isn't aging or injury, but inflammation and deterioration due to chronic infection, that needs to be addressed or nothing the patient does will help much. I have found a bit of relief with some of your tips and exercises. The lumbar support roll helps, as does sleeping on my side with my back straight. When I had a flare-up of inflammation in my hip joint, some of your hip exercises helped relieve the pain. I watch you gentlemen regularly. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with the public.
Sometimes I get tight muscles and need to stretch out my back in the morning. So I do a forward fold and breath deeply a few times. Really helps me out.
@@msesheta How would bending backwards which requires contracting the muscles stretch them out? Arching the back is good for mild lower back pain. Not tight muscles.

I like your UA-cam shows and I appreciate you efforts to help us thank you. I have arthritis in my knees and my feet. Along with my hands. Possibly arthritis in my lower back I don't know but I do have pain and discomfort in my lower back. I have shoulder issues and elbow issues. so am I asking for suggestions. When I get up in the morning I roll over to my left side normally and I push up straight up with my left arm the sitting position. and then I try to stand straight up without meaning for word. So I work on lateral leg lifts everyday. Also work on laying on my stomach and raising my legs up. Course I always do ankle circles and squares and what not. Also do upper body lifts laying on my stomach in bed belt pinned soda speed into the bed. So mainly if you can help me reduce my back pain. How it would help me function so much more. So I'm only 59 and some people say still young. Thank you Bob and Brad
Bob & Brad: Question: Where do you keep your shoes and slippers at night? My bed is tall enough that I can't reach either without some bending, and I have no chair in the room. btw, if you have built up your core, you can sit up safely. (You will also probably not have back/posture problems to begin with.) Raise your straightened legs as far toward your head as possible,, stiffen your trunk, swing your legs slowly downward while tensing abdomen and thighs.. Unless you are very top heavy, once your legs are ~15 degrees past the vertical, your body will start to pivot upward on your butt. Do not try this if your back or abdomen is sore.
I keep my socks & slippers on the nightstand next to the bed! I also put my dogs harness on after she jumps on the ottoman & while I sit. There are workarounds for most situations!
I'm 70 socks shoes forget it I use small little elastic cords on my lace shoes,boots..I can put my right sock on not my left,injury..I hav a humongous, shoehorn I use for right sock.I bend my knees up and roll from side to side slowly then hold my legs on side for 10 count arms out and head in opposite direction...when I awake.
Thanks so much for all this info! 3 months ago I was in a car accident. I have two herniated discs in my lumbar and 4 minor bulges in my cervical. After I received injections my cervical pain has gotten worse, drastically. Some of the exercises for the lumbar spine I can’t do because of my right arm. I’m extremely weak in that arm. Any tips on exercises that I can do that won’t aggravate the cervical or lumbar pain? Or vise versa??
Rofl! You forget that some of us will invariably remember the don't dos without the don't. And then there's the ornery streak that rebelles when you say this is what you Have to listen to. Love you guys, you have helped me tremendously with pain relief.
Bob,.. Brad,.. but you guys just had that morning stretch video where you hold your knee to your chest (which I do every morning. I actually hold both knees to my chest). Seems opposite of what you’re saying here? I feel alot of pressure in my lower back when I do this. I kind of like how it feels. But don’t want to do any harm. What do you think?
I was wondering the same thing. I do the "4" leg stretch where one bent leg is crossed over the straight leg and then the straight leg is pulled up toward the chest, all while laying on my back. I do other leg stretches as well. I can relate to the "pressure, but feels good" feeling you're talking about, too. All I know is if I don't do them my back hurts all day and if I bend over after getting out of bed, even if I have done my stretches, it is painful and may actually make my back "go out." There must be something different about laying on the back, but bending that same area. Maybe because the weight of the upper body isn't pressing down on the lumbar spine as we bend and/or the legs are doing more of the muscular work??? Those are my guesses. It would be great if they answered your question, I would like to know too!
Holding both knees to your chest is actually a different exercise. I asked a physical therapist. If you're instructed to do it with only one leg, you should do it with only one leg. Don't try to save time by doing it with both legs. I haven't seen their morning routine video. But I think what they mean is to avoid bending your back when you first get up. It's okay after about an hour. When you lay on your back to bring your knee to your chest you are not bending your back. Obviously all of us would rather hear it from Bob and Brad directly... but this is my guess
My back is fine in the morning but as the day goes on it starts hurting more and more till by the time I go to bed, its killing me and sometimes I can't get comfortable or go to sleep for a while.
Rach Kate They have many good videos on back stretches and exercises incl decompression that don’t put pressure on wrists.
