2013 HP4 Competition #1255 here. I haven't ridden in over two years, but I always take some time to have a seat in the garage and just stare at it. Finally took some time over the last two weeks to refresh everything, replace the chain and clean everything. Went for a test ride and holy shit I forgot just how ridiculous this machine is. It really brings out your inner hooligan, even at 43 years old.
Hp4 is a better machine. Hands down. This bike was made when BMW was trying to prove a point. Brembo monoblock brakes and abs back in 2013. 2020 and up they cut corners by going with Hayes calipers. 2013 had the shift assist that has been carried over all these years. 2013 had the beautiful Akra ti exhaust. 2013 had the beautiful polished swingarm which they got rid off. Cost cutting again. 2013 Hp4 had all the Gilles bit and pieces which the M1k has but it feels as a follow up. Nothing revolutionary as the Hp4 was when it came out. The Hp4 had this exclusivity when it came out. Even the forged wheels were exclusive. This new Mk1 has all the same stuff as M package model.
nah hp4 was the greatest when it came out. but it was already kind of beaten by the generation of s1000rr after the hp4. so no the hp4 is not better than the current S1000rr because it was pretty equal allready before the upgrade to the new s1000rr which is better than every single one of the previous generations. every generation of s1000rr has ben better than the last the only thing you can argue for is the hp4 race.
If it was my money I would go for the HP4 hands down, but that's because I'm a sucker for nostalgia and I remember that classic commercial back in the day of when they attached a tablecloth to the bike and accelerated so fast all the dishes on the table stood still.

Over many years I've had GSXR's, Kawasaki's, Honda's, Suzuki's and regularly changed bikes. However, when I got my 'HP4 Carbon Competition' years ago I can honestly say it's without a doubt the best bike I've ever owned - in so many levels, to include power, comfort, features, reliability, handling, looks, etc. I would never part with it and will always be more than I can handle, so I've no reason to upgrade. An absolute gem. 650ib's videos are amazing, and such a huge amazing collection of bikes. Just a pity I'm in the UK, as I'd love to have a ride out with him and the lads, even if on the 'filthy streets of Cleveland'. Safe riding!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Interesting the reasons you pick the M1000RR, are the same features on the standard K67. 🤔 I loved my 2017 far more than my 2020 RR. Your hp4 is a timeless masterpiece and has something the M1000RR doesn't have.... Character However, I know you'd never sell your hp4, I am not sure if you'd keep your M1000RR 🤷
no modern vehicle has ''character'' that's just what progress does. i agree that new tech makes you feel less connected with your vehicle but it does make you hell of allot faster. and of course the K67 has the same features the M1000RR is based on the K67 and then moded by BMW M division. personally i don't know what i would pick. the HP4 is more fun but the M1000RR is allot beter as a street bike.
I was all set to buy an m1000 but just can't part with my hp sauce. It's loaded brentune race ecu, 2 d expansion, wilbers suspension it's a monster I just love it.
Great Review ib! I really, really prefer a clock style ound tachometer. I'm old fashioned but I learned with them and I can't stand modern tachometers. All else I'm good with.
I agree with your choice, I can only speak to looks cause I've never riden either but I love tech and watching you ride and showcase it. It's easy to see why it's alot of people's dream bike including mines.
I hate how the headlights aren't symmetrical. And because of the new model i look at the old model differently and it almost seems wierd the headlights are in that position and not below those fearings like the new model. But all of that is just a slight imperfection and nobody is perfect :D. I'd kill to own one of these
There's a reason for the headlights to be that way ,honestly I like them because there unique and you know what bike that is,now there just conforming to look like the other biked,bikes, love my 14 and love the new one as well
You like the BMW 2021's fuel gauge, but doesn't the 2013 tell you how many miles of gas you have left? If so, that's a fuel gauge's basic function, right?
I'm glad you did this one!!! We had a 13 HP4 & 20 S1000rr in our stable last year. I felt more comfortable, went faster on the HP. Its like that old friend. We really missing that ol friend now cause the 20 is down w ecu issues & they can't fix it yet. I haven't did a road course in some time & use to be fast. I knew if I took that HP4 after years of being absent I could instantly put down some good numbers. That's how I felt bout that bike!!!! I had to comment before I finished the video. 😆
Definitely M1000 RR for me too. I love the new tech in 2021 and beyond and the convenience it offers. Its good having options which comes in handy on long rides on "these filthy streets" lol.
Guys, I have one question What is the difference between s1k hp4 2013 competition and s1k 2014 competition ? Is it the power, top speed or acceleration? And which one is better to buy?
The HP4 is a special motorcycle for us very few who own them its hard to explain in words not only that they only made them for two years an I remember just throwing some money to try an get my name in the hat but the bike was so rare that everyone had to do that just to try an receive one. I still yet to have ride the m1000 but I can speak for the HP4 an she is amazing machine an puts a big smile on my face everytime I Crack that throttle.....none the less 650 great videos keep up the amazing work an stay safe
Great comparison. Love my 2013 S1k couldn't trade cause I've modified it too much and has sentimental value to me. One day I would like to own a M1000rr or ride one to see the difference.
As a owner of 2016 and 2021 s1000rr , for me both are excellent and exceptional bikes , I find the 16 has soul and character which I didn’t find in the 21 , although the 21 is still a great bike , This comparison is similar to what I faced when I had the 2017 Duc 1299s and the 2020 Duc v4s ,the 1299s had a soul and character as well as symphonic sound
yeah the new tech has cought upp with the bike world. this lack of soul shit has ben going on in cars for a while now. i don't think we will ever have any new bike that has a soul ever again :(. but i could probably see why they do it. i mean there's just so much you can do to a bike before it becomes to much. and you can't just sell the same bike year after year. the reviewers would just trash your product because the competition suddenly became more comfortable. (like we actually saw with som of the manufacturers that had not really cought upp with the tech yet) sure theres probably a few more pinches of performance you can squeese out of the old tech but then the problem is that the bike is to dangerous for people and that can mean law suits or even worse the complete banning of sport bikes on roads. we had that problem back in the day to where the government wanted to ban bikes because people crashed them to offten

2014 HP4 Competition here, nice review I was looking for a take on the two, you mentioned the seating position up higher on the M1000rr very good to know as I prefer to ride a bike where it feels like you're in the machine instead of on the machine, starting as a GSXR rider I'm all about seating position feeling more in the bike. Your very correct about the HP4 being more of an experience than anything it's an absolute treat every time you toss a leg over. Have you raced both side by side flat out and some pulls side by side of the two? Also what do you think of the wings on the M1000? Look a bit silly if you ask me

U can tell the difference between HP4 and M1000rr from the smoothness quick shifter, nimble and engine response way better. Nevertheless, both bikes are good and god bless you always Bro 750ib! Stay safe and enjoy your ride
Ib why are the revs jumpy when you start the hp4. I had it happen to my gixxer when I put on a slip on I increased the revs on idle which fixed the issue

I noticed those chicken strips on the HP4 are lookin a little thick. I was like that for a while then started to relax more when turning and found myself at first scraping my boot on the ground in a turn. Then pushed it further and started lightly touching my knee down since I don’t have leathers on. There are no chicken strips on my bike now not even on my 2015 V-Strom 1000.
I think that you just can not compare the HP4 to any S1000.... I mean it is a "homologisation" model based on the S1000RR and they wanted to have their new tech into their racebikes. What was new for me is that the brands only seem to be allowed to have "normal" tech and the ddc for example was something completely new this time. It was basically a gamechanger. And so they have had to bring it on the streets, make experiences with it , learn from it, develop it further and then be able to use it in racing. MAybe this is also why they did name their units with numbers ? And I think this is exactly the feeling that this bike gives you. I mean when I drive mine it is WOW.... But she also sometimes (like me as well haha) has her bad days or maybe ladies days haha... She just sometimes does not know what to do with her muffler so when I start her she closes,opens and so on until i start her up and she gets what to do and sometimes even in modes she shall be save on higher rpm she WILL defenitely lift her front wheel no matter what you try to do.... I also had her acting weird one day and turned her off and on and it was fine again. Also when you accelerate or so... It may sound strange but there is something about the HP4 that does give you like something "personal" also the way she accelerates or so she just seems to learn when you like "want" to become rude or just want to cruise. I have never experienced this with any other bike that i have ridden. And I think this is also totally matching her design as well... The two different front lights are also a bit like "two types" "slpit personality" or alike... Overall I think the HP4 was absolutely ahead of its time and in some luckily very rare ways she also lets you feel that but this is oki. I like it when a bike or a car have their "things" it makes it special in a way. Over here, when a special vehicle has its "special" things and ways to act the people call it "it just has character"... And I think the HP4 is a perfect example for that phrase. And then other people do want the absolute perfection and I guess this is where the M1000 with way better experiences into that kind of the tech and being WAY better developed into perfection. Those are just two different bikes I think.

The main issue is I think the overall quality, fit and finish is just better on the previous bike (and least compared to the '19 to current S1000RR)

The TFT allows you to choose between different layouts, not just the one Ib showed. There is a simulated analog tachometer in the Sports menu.

It’s a difference in settings and rider input. You can make the K67 or M1000RR wheelie as much or as little as you like.

I have the 2013 HP4 but are considering the M1K because i feel those winglits will keep the front end planted when I,m doing 180mph to the cafe🤣
Just one line to say some bikes are born timeless for eg hp4 ,hayabusa, zx12r, zx14r. And after some years h2 and h2r will also be.

I noticed those chicken strips on the HP4 are lookin a little thick. I was like that for a while then started to relax more when turning and found myself at first scraping my boot on the ground in a turn. Then pushed it further and started lightly touching my knee down since I don’t have leathers on. There are no chicken strips on my bike now not even on my 2015 V-Strom 1000.
chicken strips are to be removed on the track only, no point risking a high value bike on the streets

Are you sure the 2013 HP4 has a throttle cable? I think it is ride by wire too...
yessir. it had a throttle cable from 2010-2014. In 2015 it became throttle by wire and added auto blipper.

I think that you just can not compare the HP4 to any S1000.... I mean it is a "homologisation" model based on the S1000RR and they wanted to have their new tech into their racebikes. What was new for me is that the brands only seem to be allowed to have "normal" tech and the ddc for example was something completely new this time. It was basically a gamechanger. And so they have had to bring it on the streets, make experiences with it , learn from it, develop it further and then be able to use it in racing. MAybe this is also why they did name their units with numbers ? And I think this is exactly the feeling that this bike gives you. I mean when I drive mine it is WOW.... But she also sometimes (like me as well haha) has her bad days or maybe ladies days haha... She just sometimes does not know what to do with her muffler so when I start her she closes,opens and so on until i start her up and she gets what to do and sometimes even in modes she shall be save on higher rpm she WILL defenitely lift her front wheel no matter what you try to do.... I also had her acting weird one day and turned her off and on and it was fine again. Also when you accelerate or so... It may sound strange but there is something about the HP4 that does give you like something "personal" also the way she accelerates or so she just seems to learn when you like "want" to become rude or just want to cruise. I have never experienced this with any other bike that i have ridden. And I think this is also totally matching her design as well... The two different front lights are also a bit like "two types" "slpit personality" or alike... Overall I think the HP4 was absolutely ahead of its time and in some luckily very rare ways she also lets you feel that but this is oki. I like it when a bike or a car have their "things" it makes it special in a way. Over here, when a special vehicle has its "special" things and ways to act the people call it "it just has character"... And I think the HP4 is a perfect example for that phrase. And then other people do want the absolute perfection and I guess this is where the M1000 with way better experiences into that kind of the tech and being WAY better developed into perfection. Those are just two different bikes I think.
