- Symmetrical boards are becoming so popular amongst the skate community lately but what benefits do they actually provide?
In this video I set up a Heroin 9.5" egg board to find out Why SYMMETRICAL BOARDS Are Becoming So POPULAR...
What do you guys think of symmetrical boards?

What do you guys think of symmetrical boards?
I kinda want to try one now I was thinking about this 8.12 real deck I saw on tactics isn't labeled that way but the specs are twin tail
I was recommended a symmetrical board because I switch a lot when transition skating which can be awkward at times
The only way for me. I don’t break these, less waste, less worry which way to ride it. 0 negatives.
It blows my mind how these haven't even been available for the last twenty fucking years when skateboarding evolved to the point people were popping off both kicks. I searched forever and couldn't find any, unbelievable.
All I ride now, that exact board and a 9.25
I used to use my nose as the tail. It just made more sense to me that the bigger side was for popping. Everyone at the park said it was “cheating” because I was able to pop so high. I eventually switched and skated the tail, as the tail. About 8 years later I said fuck it and tried the nose again, and there is a big pop difference. Symmetrical boards make me feel like I was ahead of the curve 10 years ago
It will make you pop bigger because your board had to become more vertical before the nose can hit the ground but popping off the tail allows you to get a faster pop since that kick is lower to the ground so that would definitely make sense dude 👌🏼
bro u deserve so much more recognition
fire vid bro
Thanks dude, appreciate that heaps!
Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
9.5??? Boards are huge now. Damn. I still remember when 7.75 was considered big
Haha yeah man, they just keep getting bigger and bigger and I love it lol
Don't let what's trendy sway you, I still skate between 7.5 and 7.75
I had to stop shopping at my local after they refused to stock anything under 8.0. It's a shame too because kids are too influential to experiment for themselves and find what works, they just grab whatever size their favourite pro is riding.
How was 7.75 actually ever considered big?
Like for a kid yeah….
But I have small feet and 8 inch feels harder on the feet.. your feet can’t even fit in the concave proper
@@pressureflipwillygrindI mean no one’s trying to do double and triple flips so what’s the point of riding such a small board also board size has always been a trend and will continue to be
@@jeffheyer7783 there's a lot more instances a thinner lighter setup helps than with double flips... If you're a flip in, flip out tech skater why on earth would you want something that weighs a tonne, flips slow and takes more effort to use?
that's park looks sick. love the brick banks
It is a sick park, but some skaters may feel the absence of any tranny obstacles there. It's truly a street style plaza, no quarters or even any big roll ins or banks. Still has a good flow though.
@@mronenil it looks good with the brick banks and curbs. smaller is good. i'm from oregon...so many of the parks here will give you vertigo they're so big. getting old, i appreciate the small obstacles for sure
Yeah dude, the park aesthetic is so good!
Totally agree. What a cool design.
ive never wanted to skate a park so badly
It's a fun park man! Glebe skatepark in Sydney 👌🏼
the symetrical boards really shine for shuvits, varial flips, 180's and fakie tricks imo since the board always feel the same no matter what.
Yup you get to be less neurotic about sheet one less thing you have to worry about out of the equation. The next step is to get your front and back truck the exact tightness this takes patients but can be done and the results are satisfying.
Yeah dude, that is such a good benefit with these boards! It's so fun just riding it whatever way it is lol
I do a lot of slappy crooks and also ride directional egg shapes so I have a dedicated front and back truck. I've heard if you want to ride symmetrical that its best to set it up with new trucks so you don't have that problem.
Yeah dude, if you're going from a standard board to a symmetrical board I would definitely wait until you get a new pair of trucks!
Your trucks will be used to turning a certain way and your grind grooves in your trucks will already be set in which might make it harder to ride the board both ways
The crailtap G069 8.25" twin tail is absolutely god tier for flatground, especially if you do a lot of fakie tricks.
Hell yeah, that sounds sick!
Will vouch for this!i have a Sean malto go69 shape I just rode!im trying the go96 shape now with a chocolate graphic, which is the same specs just 8.5 instead!
I love symmetrical decks because you dont have to constantly pay attention to your board direction
That actually makes them so good!
i can get on board in terms of symetrical decks. its the symetrical trucks for me. ive ridden tight and loose trucks but the back is always tighter. Even if you had em perfectly neutral theyd still probably behave differently in subtle ways and id always be wondering which end im dealing with.
Haha yeah dude that's true! If you're not riding it both ways evenly then your trucks definitely don't stay symmetrical
@LeonPaxton someone needs to go wild and do the symetrical fish with wide tails on each end.
Damn that would be pretty wild! 😂
So the thing for me is is I’m a freak about building grooves into my trucks (I skate a lot of curbs, love crusty ledges) my back truck feeble groove, front truck crook groove are my children, and I have fostered many. Symmetrical decks fuck all that up for me. I rode that exact board, and am riding another symmetrical egg now, and i skate it the same way every time. The difference is i just arbitrarily chose what side my nose was and ran with it.
Also some people run a looser front truck than the back. Not me, but that could goof some people up.
I feel you about chipping the board tho, switch the trucks around and its all good.
I'm sure the whole one truck more loose makes sense to some people, but I never really understood why people would want that. When riding backwards, the whole 'advantage' of a turny nose is gone and might cause more problems than being a benefit. And the more switch/fakie/nollie stuff people do, the less you'd want a very turny nose for sure. And forget about bombing a hill with front truck that is more loose. I'm sure someone like Daewon Song would disagree strongly with me, but even he will struggle with certain tricks with how insanely loose his front truck is.
Haha dude, I know exactly what you mean! Crook & Feeble grooves in my trucks are always worn in too!
I'm actually interested to see what type of grooves show up since I'm skating these new trucks both ways too.
Yeah I've heard of a lot of people doing that but I usually ride my trucks exactly how they come, I don't really loosen or tighten them at all 🤷🏽♂
Great vid! I would love to see you test out the 9.75 symmetrical egg. I'm thinking of stepping up to that size.
Thanks dude! 🙏🏼
I've actually just picked up that board and have a 10" on the way too so I'm keen to skate those 2 boards asap!
Steve Olsen was the og of the symmetrical skate deck.
Really!?!? You learn something new everyday.
Damn dude, I didn't know that either!
The shortys team in the day were innovative.
Which Steve Olsen ?
Even befor Valelley and Roskopp?
I snapped my wrist on that bank to bank gap last year, kickflipping it XD. Worst thing was I had already landed it, was just trying to get it cleaner haha
Oh dude, that sucks so bad!
I had a double tail board from REAL skateboards few years ago. I didnt even know it til i got to cashier. I really enjoyed it at the time and i found my board lasted longer then usual.
They definitely help your board last longer and also your trucks too since you are riding them both ways equally 👌🏼
I have been riding the egg board with great progress ❣️👏🏽❤️🔥I’m a fan of this “Eggboard” style.
It totally gives me edge on symmetry &balance ,which I am working on for now.
Eventually I’m going back to my cruisers& pennyboards because they’re my favs . I believe it’s because of my weight& height& . I love the way my feet feel with less space on the board underneath. I foresaw me not liking the “egg board” over my other boards because of obvious differences but I love it now-
More room. The riding both ways thing is true. It’s really convenient. Both sides of mine are cracked ,tho’ 😂still. ❤Love life.Keep Skating through like it’s nothin’
Hell yeah, egg boards are the best!
I'm the opposite, I like having a massive board under my feet with more room to move and more control lol
It's good that you like both styles though so you can switch it up every now and then 👌🏼
What size trucks should you use for this specific board? I’m assuming 9in since that’s the width where the trucks are. Awesome vid btw, you earned a new subscriber 👍🏻
i got 10" on the new curb killer and they fit like a glove, some bones 103a, just finished setting up. happy shreddage
Yeah dude, I ride 9” wide trucks for this board and it’s perfect 👌🏽
You should always get trucks to match the width over your trucks on an egg board rather than the widest point of the board
I have a heroin mini egg thats 8.1 and 8.5 in the middle. I prefer egg shaped because its aerodynamic and give you kind of a "surfboard" feel. Popsicles feel way too straight and narrow
Yeah dude, the egg shapes just feel so good under your feet!
Currently riding a Quasi Justin Henry pro model twin tail shape
Oh sick, I didn't know he rode a twin tail too!
Hell yay mane welcome to the twin-tail world I'm sk8n and 8.25 ishod which I had 148 thunder hollows on,but I ordered brand new 147 thunders and yeah man I love twin tails. I put the 148s back on my 8.25 football shaped sk8mafia with 56mm oj KeyFrames and rails. Both are fun,but my cruiser is a lil bit more fun tho in my old ass age of 44 lol
Hell yeah man, they are so good!
Do you think you'll ever go back to standard popsicles that aren't symmetrical again?
@@LeonPaxton hell no when I got the sk8mafia to make my cruiser I found myself sk8n that more than my regular whip and gave it to some lil kid at the local diy. From there what was supposed to be my cruiser turned into my kit just took the oj's off and replaced them with some 52mm snot wheels. Since then I've put the KeyFrames back on 💪🏾. I grew up sk8n shaped boards and as I got older came the football shaped decks. So after I received my sk8mafia it took me back ❤️! Keep comin with the awesome content that you're comin wit homie 💯👊🏾✊🏾💪🏾
Yeah I feel the same lol
Thanks dude, appreciate that so much 🙏🏼
8.5 symmetrical w/ Indy 159's, and OJ mini Super Juice wheels. My current and one of my favorite rides of all-time.
Damn that does sound like a sick set up dude!
159 Indy’s are so much fun
I had the rob roskopp target eyeball symetrical back in the day.
Damn, symmetrical boards have been around for a while then!
Also neen being the first one you heard about it is wild fa and real came out with twin tales like 8 or 9 years ago. Quasi/mother skateboards as well
Oh damn, I definitely didn't know FA & Quasi made twin tails!
It makes sense that they have been around for years though, I'm just very late to the party lol
thats a really nice park! tons of different features even brick banks!
Yeah dude, the architecture and vibes at this park are amazing!
Although the Egg shape board is wide but it still has a standard size wheelbase and length. Pretty cool.
Yeah and they taper down towards the tail and nose so they don't actually feel as big as they are 👌🏼
great videos to watch before skating haha, makes me feel so much better skating an eggshape board lol. none of my homies skate shaped boards but they all plannin to do so cause they fw my set up haha
Thanks dude!
Yeah dude, so many people are getting into shaped boards now, especially eggs 😍
I’ve got the same egg, I’ve had it for about a year and set it up when I need a change 🔥
That's sick! You know just how fun that board is then 🙌🏼
Back in the day when twin tails came out it made so much sense to me since then I refuse to skate a board that isn’t
Thank you for the review and break down on the shape! How does this shape work for nollie tricks?
No worries dude, thanks for watching!
Nollie’s were great on this board! It’s not a twin nose but the kicks still had more concave than a standard tail 👌🏽
mark suciu also is riding symmetrical now
Oh true, I didn't know that!
Another amazing video! Are you rocking the Thunder 149s? How did they end up feeling being narrower than the board? How wide is the deck at the wheels?
About a fraction over 9”
Thanks dude! 🙏🏼
Yeah still on the Thunder 149's and they felt fine to be honest. I put 3 washers on the inside of each wheel to make my truck base wider too and the tapered in board definitely helped too so it didn't feel off at all 👌🏼
I'm not actually sure of the width where the trucks sit. I'll have to measure it and get back to you 👍🏽
Been riding the Ishod's Comfy 8" for a while. Great board.
That's sick! Do you think you'll ever go back to standard popsicle boards after that?
@@LeonPaxton I go back and forth trying to play with different setups. I have only been skating for a bit over 2 years and can't do a lot of tricks so can't really tell if I am missing out on a big nose or not.
I like the fact I can skate in any direction, parts get less wear and tear, and I can pop from any end with the same effort. The Real board has a good concave, WB and length for me.
My cruiser is a directional popsicle and I love it, but really don't do tricks on it as I use mostly for commuting.
Oh true, that makes sense.
Whatever feels good and is fun works 🙏🏼
I havent skated in almost 20 years. Yeesh these are big. I remember when everyone was rocking like 7.5 or 7.75 element feather lights.
Yeah dude, boards just keep getting bigger and bigger over the years lol
@@LeonPaxton what's funny is I got ridiculed for buying like an 8.25 Anti-hero board. My one buddy called it the battleship haha. Guess I was just a forward thinker. Pahhhh
Haha yeah I used to ride an 8.25" as a teenager and everyone used to say that was a massive board too 😂
So, I've been skating symmetrical boards for several months now (Foy twin shape), and I've noticed for me it just causes me OCD in different ways. First set up I put an indicator bolt on both sides, so I wouldn't think too much about it, because they looked the exact same, but then I noticed I tried to just switch which end I was skating as the tail. Like, try a few tricks, okay, time to swap to try to keep wear even. The good news is eventually I lose track and it's whatever, but I still find myself periodically checking to see if one side feels more worn down than the other, and at that point then I'll either see that I'm pretty even, or I'll make a judgment call on which end is going to be the tail for the next few trick/line attempts.
So while it's not foolproof by any stretch (as OCD will always find a way to creep in to some degree), it has been a lot of fun and I have ended up really liking the symmetrical board set up. I think I'll be rocking it for awhile at the very least. Until they start releasing them every seasonal drop, I can't say for sure that it will be full time. It was really good to know that I could get used to at least a slightly different shape though, because I had been locked in to the shape I had been riding for the last several years.
Well, I think the idea is to NOT have to even think about it, and just let the randomness over time even the wear out…. Just kinda.. let it happen . . . Save yourself the brain space!
The biggest challenge is getting your trucks as evenly matched, and as close to your desired tightness, as possible.
I never thought I’d want trucks with the same tightness, but it feels great locked in, and somehow turns extremely comfortably as well… who knew
@@SongJLikes I wish OCD worked like that, but unfortunately it doesn't. With that said, I do feel like it's getting better over time. Usually there will come a point in the session where I check once to feel evenness of tails and then move on. I was also able to rock grip that has something on it (like shake junt grip), and not be phased when I'm skating it with the words going to opposite way of how I set it up normally. That was something I tried with the latest board I set up, and was very surprised at how much it didn't bother me. So, all in all, nothing but good things to say about twin tail setups.
@@SongJLikes Yeah, getting your trucks dialed in to the same tightness can be a little bit of a pain, but then it's surprisingly awesome when it's done.
Oh true, so you're intentionally trying to skate the board evenly both way which is causing even more OCD than before? 😂
That's good to hear man! As skaters we are always going to have a bit of madness when it comes to our set ups lol
ill be honest, ive been skating for few years and i never actually noticed difference nose vs tail. every board to me feels symmetrical.
What brand boards do you usually get?
There's a lot of shapes out there that aren't exactly symmetrical but have a similar nose and tail 🤔
@@LeonPaxton i usually ride hookups or element boards. when i started of i didnt even know there was a tail or nose for a very long time. when i finally found out it was already too late, didnt feel any difference anymore. maybe if i get symmetrical board will be weird for me lol
im feeling the same. i started off skating the wrong direction and i can't tell the difference between the two sides
That park is beautiful.
Yeah dude, Glebe skatepark in Sydney 👌🏼
What did you think of the huffer? Such an underrated shape imo, deserves a video on it's own!
Oh man it was actually sick!
I only rode it that one night BUT I'd be happy to do a full video on it soon 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton Dang, why only one night? I have it on ice but I've gotten super used to the 8.75 DLX shape. Might set one up for the summer :) thanks for the reply, truly enjoy every vid you put out and I for one would love one on the Huffer!
I just set it up for one night and then I was street skating on my next session so I set up my previous popsicle board just for the trick I was trying lol
Thanks heaps man, appreciate that a lot 🙏🏼
Egg decks are the best!! They look badass and just feel amazing
Yeah dude, I'm loving them!
i have a 8.2 twin i love it you can skate it both ways
Sick! What brand is that one?
@@LeonPaxton caleb barnett hockey little rock deck (+indi delfinos, bones reds & spitfire 4s)

This is definitely my main egg board 👌🏼
I have always ridden my popsicle decks either way. Tail or nose...have never cared.
I gotta know the name of this park. This place looks amazing.
It's Glebe skatepark in Sydney dude, so fun!
I wish Donovan Piscopo tries these boards
omg what a skatepark😯😯 so nice
So good man! Glebe skatepark in Sydney 👌🏽
Im riding a 8.5 now and want to get an egg board but stuck between the 8.9 and the 9.125 😭
9.125" will be perfect man!
@@LeonPaxton do you think 149s will work for that size board?
It would definitely work but they have an axle width of 8.5" and this board is about 9.1" over the trucks so your trucks would just sit in about 0.3" on each side which isn't bad but just depends what you want.
It might feel a little more unstable having smaller trucks to the board but having a wide board like this will feel more stable anyway so it might balance that out perfectly 👌🏼
9.5 lol I'm still rocking an 8.0 thats crazy
Haha yeah man, boards just keep getting bigger don't they lol
How did you find the trucks on the 9.5 board? Would you say 8.5 trucks are perfect for these decks since they have the cutouts?
It was fine man, didn't actually effect me negatively at all 👌🏼
I would say a truck with 8.75" axle would be better suited for this board though. I just think the 8.5" trucks worked well because I've got 3 washers on the inside of each wheel which widens my hanger width
The 9.5 is 9.125 above the wheels which is perfect for 9.125 trucks such as 169 indie and 161 thunder
161 would definitely be the go 👌🏼
Dude what park is it? Looks great
It's Glebe skatepark in Sydney dude, Super fun 👌🏼
Park looks insane...
It's super fun!
Glebe skatepark in Sydney 👌🏼
Because you like the game of guessing which truck is the front truck. Lol
I'd definitely recommend setting up new trucks with a symmetrical board 👌🏼
Classy lil skatepark
Yeah dude, it's pretty fun!
Glebe skatepark in Sydney 👌🏼
Doubles the life of your board so once it works sweet you get twice the drama free joy.
Trucks wear equally and tails wear equally.
Exactly dude, nothing but positives 👌🏼
Just another trend. Professor Schmidtt said it best, would you rather a pocket knife with one or two blades?
2 blades being a nose and tail?
@@LeonPaxton correct
Does anyone know what that deck is that Ishod had at the start? I can't find it anywhere
I'm pretty sure it's his 'Cat Scratch' twin tail board but he just has a different coloured ply than usual 🤔
What trucks do you use for this board I think I might buy the same one
The trucks I rode on this board don't actually suit this board at all, I just didn't want to buy new trucks to suit this board lol
In this video I'm riding 149 Thunder Hollow Light trucks which only have an axle width of 8.5" but I have put 3 washers on the inside of each wheel to push them out and increase my hanger/ grinding surface but this board is about 9.125" over the trucks so realistically these trucks are too small and you would want at least a 9" wide truck
@LeonPaxton ahh I see the truck size system is kinds cubfysing would u mind letting me know what trucks u would recommend and size of the trucks to accommodate the board please
Yeah dude, it does get very confusing!
When you are looking to buy a new egg board online it usually says what the width is over the trucks so you can buy trucks that suit that size and if you go to a skate shop to get one then you can just ask one of the workers to measure over the trucks for you 👌🏼
How’d you make the wheel wells so professionally
That specific board model has wheel wells
Yeah the board already came like that lol
Symmetrical egg boards fuckin rule
1,000%!
Glebe for the win 🤙🏻
Hell yeah, fun park!
the kid crying in the back is comical
Between that and the wind 😂
WHAT YEAR IS IT?!?!?!???
'23? lol
what[s the 10" board?
I'm not actually sure but I think it was the Curb Killer 4
Whats that song playing?
The first song is 'Salt Lamp' by Jobii and the second song is 'Blossoming in My Heart' by Adelyn Paik 👌🏼
Would you recommend symmetrical boards for beginners?
It won't really make a difference as a beginner dude, standard shaped popsicles will be fine as a beginner
Okay cool man! Thanks!
No problem dude 🙏🏼
Where is this park?
It's Glebe skatepark in Sydney dude 👌🏼
do yall do vert only?? cant see doing flip tricks on a board allmost 10fking inch long. wow.
Haha yeah man it does sound crazy but the razor edge on the top ply definitely helps the flip 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton hey man im impressed gotta be some crazy board control im practacing doing my flips with a 7.75 i cant imagine going bigger.
Haha thanks dude! The razor top definitely helps 👌🏼

Thanks legend! 🙏🏼
the rise of biodirectional boards make sense, but why do boards need to be soo big these days? its excessive.
and im talking as their main. not even as a secondary toy
I wear size 12 shoes, so I bigger board is just going to be more comfortable to ride.
That's what I was thinking too but I only have size 9 foot bigger people like bigger boards not even that sometimes people just like bigger boards
Haha yeah man, boards are getting bigger and bigger but I love it!
I'm a big guy with big feet and I don't flip my board too much these days so big boards are great for me 👌🏼
heroin skateboards the best! ❤
herion is amazing
I want one but its 73$ shipping !!!
I love heroin!
Heroin with a razor and you have the proper gear
No they aren’t they are too big
heroin is the best too!❤
Symmetrical boards have been popular since the 90s
Oh damn, I didn't know that! I thought they were created within the last 10 years somewhere
@@LeonPaxtonHard to believe, I know. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it
A symmetrical board is just any board that has the same shape and kick from either end...the popsicle stick shape is a symmetrical board. But they been more popular since tony hawks 1 came out.
Granted to some companies including heroin symmetrical means its a shaped deck that has the same kick at both ends. They use the term symmetrical to clarify its not just a popsicle stick.
Damn that's interesting dude!
This video is like a year late…..
Better late than never 😅
The nose and tail are not the same on Heroin Egg's, looking down at the board the SHAPE is the same but the angle of the nose and tail isnt.
Damn I didn't even consider if the concave on each kick was the same or not!
I'm going to have to suss that out 🤔
How about Mike V? And why TF do you guys call them "Deck Rails"? Just rails is ok.. Also, your gonna feel a difference. Your front and back trucks are worn in different..
Was he one of the first guys to ride a symmetrical board?
Rails that go on you deck = deck rails? 😂
Yeah I would definitely recommend setting up a symmetrical board with new trucks 👌🏼
Set up a symmetrical deck with worn in trucks and after one session I feel no difference. Grinds yea but that just means you get to make groves on your trucks again which is fun
Yeah true, it wouldn't take too long for your bushings to start moving the same both ways 👌🏼
❤️🌏❤️
Man your lost so much weight over the years. All that skating bro
Haha thanks man!
I've lost a bit of weight since the lockdowns but I do wear much baggier clothes now so it's also probably an illusion lol
