I don't think it possible to make Portal better. And if it doesn't better, that's mean it worse. Or you will fell like it just a Clone of Portal 2. If Portal 3 is actually made. It only can be: Chell or another test subject once again got lock in Aperture. Or: Chell is running around city with a portal gun. The second may be ok but that would change the game play a lot. It may become like Half life
Yeah I've always wanted a third one, but now that you mentioned that... I think it's best to leave Portal the way it is. It's still amazing, even without being a trio ^_^
I like how you can see the evolution of various elements from the game during this early sequence. They used a lot of these test chambers completely differently in the full release of the game but a lot of their early design still exists.

This kind of reminds me of the trailer for portal 1. "Let's take a look at a real world example", and the real world example is way over-complicated and dangerous.
Most of these levels actually made it into the game, they just got stylized into their distinct parts, like the early abandoned levels and the later Wheatly levels. Some of these simply just were levels designed to show off a feature of the game.
Probably because these almost all require great timing, and it probably seemed a little unfair to put emphasis on timing skill in a puzzle game. Also, it's possible that they thought people might try and do the correct thing to finish the puzzle, but get the timing wrong and therefore think that what they did was wrong and try to find some other solution.

The theory about people inside the companion cube is wrong. If you right click on a companion cube in the portal 2 level editor, all the pieces of the cube come off and hover. There is no human hovering. There is only smaller boxes and a weighted ball inside the cube.
