There is absolutely no way that Half Life 3 could ever live up to the hype and expectations set up for it. IMO already Half Life 2 has aged a lot more poorly than Half Life 1 has, because it relies so heavily on introducing a bunch of "new" mechanics that are kind of commonplace in today's gaming world. The question is whether Half Life 3 could possibly find enough new ways to considerably innovate in the current gaming world to hold itself up? I personally don't think we'll see many groundbreaking game mechanics in video games anymore.
With the exception of the 1920-1950s portion of Portal 2, 1 beats 2. 1 felt more dystopian, puzzle focused and watched (but alone) while 2 always had to have someone talking to you whether it was Wheatley, or GladOS.
There are some promising upcoming Portal 2 mods: Portal: Revolution, which is planned to be released this year 2023, and Portal 2: Desolation, which is still a few years away and looks to be the most ambitious mod yet.
The one main issue I have with portal 1 is the complete lack of challenge in the puzzles. It feels like each puzzle is simply going through the motions rather than something you have to really sit down and consider, before having a eureka moment. It does keep the pace of the game flowing but it also hurts to see that portal 1 missed the potential to have some more rewarding puzzles, without all of the extra mechanics in portal 2.
no theres one thats a little bit hard, that one with the plasma ball and the emancipation grills and you have to catch it and make it go in the specific spot while you strategically walk through the emancipation grill and quickly replace your portals. That one took me forever to figure out my first time
@@grooselegacy That’s a great example of one of the better puzzles in Portal, because it actually requires some logical thought and pre planning to complete! If you compare that to chamber 18, which is basically just killing 4/5 turrets in the same way and then putting a cube on a button, the difference is clear. One of them actually has a clear problem that you need to use some lateral thinking to solve, while the other feels like a simple task, made to take longer with unnecessary steps and a large room.
There’s 1 puzzle in portal 1 that stumped me for any amount of time. a few in portal 2, but 2 is also a bit longer. I recently tried portal stories: Mel and there were some really tough puzzles that engage you way more than anything in the base games, you should give it a go if difficulty is what you’re looking for. Voice acting is a bit shit though
The most suprising thing about Portal 2 is how well it held up. I still play the game regularly to this day and it still looks really good. It does not look 13 years old. Probably helps aswell that the setting of the game itself is far into the future making everything seem futuristic even for 2023 but again at the same time the game looks absolutely stunning.
Portal 1 pros: Best atmosphere, more mistery, entertaining and dificulty test chambers. Portal 2 pros: Extended lore, best test chambers, comedy, more content and characters
I always preferred the dilapidated, run-down look of most of the areas in Portal 2, especially in the underground section. But the cold and lonely atmosphere of Portal 1 is also very good.
2:57 You don't see funnels in the first part of the game tho, you see them after you exit old aperture so that they can be used together with the gel mechanic.

Portal 1 is my preferred game. It's concise and cuts out the fat. I don't like how the second game pauses for cinematics during the story. I like the feeling of constantly elevating in Portal 1, making progress makes me so eager to see what lies beyond. Portal 1 was a fresh concept and Portal 2 was a little more of the same. No that that is terrible, I just feel like the appeal wears out a bit by then.
I think the most notable thing for portal 2 is that it changed that terrifying chell model into a much more cartoony one. Except the new mode of chell doesn’t have pupils, so it just blankly stares… (in gmod I mounted portal 2 and portal 1)
After playing both games again recently because I had the itch to. Portal 1 kind of feels like an Uber polished tech demo that guided the development of 2 more than anything. It’s just so short with so few puzzle mechanics and less difficulty overall.
I remember playing Portal 2, "finishing" it (by remembering how long 1 was) and then I realised I was just halfway through. That was a nice moment because I felt they addressed the only thing that I didn't like about Portal 1, that is its length. Also, the writing, while keeping the style of 1, I think its more developed. Both games are good, but overall I think 2 is a more well rounded experience. Y'all should play both.
Portal 2 may arguably be the best game Valve put out since Half-Life 1. The development process went kind of smooth (Smoother than HL2, or Alyx, or even Portal 1 in that regard), new mechanics have been added, the lore has been enriched gracefully and it's generally a polished, solid experience. What bugs me more is how in HL:A there are (to my taste) way too many direct borrowings from P2, be it Vortigaunt murals that resemble Ratman's, sArCaStIc Hahn lady or Russell who's basically Wheatley but without the evil part.
Portal is truly of the world’s greatest puzzle games with an amazing story and concept which remained popular throughout the years since it first was introduced
9:43 fun fact: the burnt companion cube is actually the same one that GladOS made you throw into the incinerator before progressing and the developers made sure they didn’t forget about it since they made portal 1 and gave it back to you incase you actually imprinted onto the companion cube. Quite a story. Am i right?

In my opinion, portal 2 is the better game. I've recently completed 100% of both games, and I gotta give the most props to the sequel. that doesn't go without saying Portal 1 is an S tier game. the original game gave me a great introduction to the series, and by the time I completed it fully, I was satisfied and accomplished. I then went on to grind portal 2, and the amount of polish, easter eggs, and just overall feel of the game and dialogue really scratched an itch on my brain. btw, don't take this comment from the perspective of someone who has been playing forever and who is blinded by nostalgia, because I literally got these games like a week ago lol. I love how the story is much longer, the portals are way more visually pleasing, and the amount of new characters felt really fluid. The voice acting from Wheatly was amazing, it was the first thing I had noticed about the game lol. The levels were more difficult, had more variety, and didn't feel rushed or forced. I am now working on finishing the rest of the fan made portals. those being "Portal: Reloaded", "Portal: Revolution", "Portal Stories: Mel", as well as "Portal with RTX". I have very high expectations for all of them, and would love to see these games perform as flawlessly as the original series. Overall, 11/10
I like how portal 2 hints that Glados or rather the Caroline part of Glados was Chells mother who happened to be the former CEO of Aperature after Cave Johnston died of moon dust poisoning. It also seems she didn't want to be Glados but was pressured into it. The final Portal 2 turret song lyrics also hints at this as it's basically Caroline's voice saying goodbye dear. It all hints so none can be fully confirmed but I like this version as it explains a lot (not all).
I feel like valve doesn't really know how to make sequels. Half Life 2 is a great game, but it's not a good sequel to HL1. It feels more like a spinoff or a reboot. Most of the events and enemies and characters from HL1 are gone. It's a similar story for both Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2. It's hard to call TF2 a sequel when it's predecessor has such a different gameplay and artstyle. Portal 2 feels out of place in the Half Life Universe because it takes itself a lot less seriously than the rest of the games. Left 4 Dead 2 is barely a sequel, it's more like an expansion pack.
@@need_to_know_questions_answer Although I agree with you, I was refering to the moments before finding gladostato. The open landscapes, J.K simmons doing the best Cave Johnson voice, and mostly the sense of "place horror" or just liminal spaces. It's miles underground with rooms that have turned rutten green after thousands of years of not being used, i love it.
Portal 1 just...feels better to me. The loneliness and dark tone, the claustrophobia of being completely alone with GLaDOS. Portal 2 added many new characters, a bigger back story, and much more humor. I personally preferred less humor, more isolation, more mystery of the back story, and the not knowing what the plot really was until the end....and then you still weren't 100% sure. Was the cake a lie? And GLaDOS being much more evil felt better. Portal 2 had the massive advantage of learning from what people liked or disliked from the first game. Sure, it's better looking, more polished and has more features, but that's to be expected in a sequel years later. But it also had a much bigger team, more money, and a lot of knowledge gained. Everyone loved Wheatly, and I did too, but I think his character too often felt like it was there just for comic relief and exposition. Portal 1 seemed very straight forward, but sometimes I think Portal 2 was trying to be too much with the overload of humor, story, new mechanics etc. Both are great games, nearly perfect games, but it boils down to personal taste. My personality is more Portal 1.
I think using the word horror may have been a stretch for what Portal does with its isolation. Its more just 'unnerving'. Horror can be unnerving, obviously but Portal i think has always had more of a tounge in cheek atmosphere alongside it, even as early as the first game. Portal 2 didnt introduce comedy, it was always there. Silly nitpick but, i thought it was worth saying lol
why doesn't this have more views? this has the kind of humor the internet loves (myself included it's hilarious) and it's well edited. this definitely deserves more views
Portal 2 is a great game, but I just love the simplicity and the creepy old Source vibes of the first one. Never been one to care for story or narrative too much so the first one takes the cake for me (pun intended).
Did you know that there is a Half-Life 1 Xen Skybox in the game? It is part of a cut ending where, after defeating Glados you end up seeing the first level of Half-Life 1s Xen.
The original. - I miss GladOS's colder, more robotic voice - I miss P1's HL2 influence. Everything that got redesigned went from implied Combine nightmare to just clinical tech out of some '50s concept art (again, looking at you, Glados) - I miss questioning whether I'm in a research facility or a padded cell - i miss the grime, beyond the art style P2 is in that weird late 360 era where games just looked... odd, imo, like it was obvious they were pushing consoles past their limit. A lot of assets (like the portal gun itself) looked better in the original. - In Portal 1, physics puzzles are actually physics-based. In P2, every time you jump a large gap, you can notice yourself get "sucked in" because you're really just getting dragged across. Which is lame as hell.
Portal 2 has one flaw that i can't forgive. All levels have ONE way to be done, 2 at most(in the beginning) while Portal 1 you could literally pass entire levels with sheer creativity.
I don't know if that's exactly a bad thing. The puzzles are more intricate because of that. The flaw with this approach on portal 1 is that puzzles where really easy.
Well, actually, it is a puzzle, but it has a dark story that we didn't know when we were little, until Portal 2 came, this puzzle game has a bitter and scary story in the past. Don't forget powerful sales with great points .change my mind
my preference is with portal 1, not because of anything in the game but more because it's less game (it's shorter). since it's so short, it's a lot more replayable, kills a bit of time easily. i don't have to dedicate as much for a playthrough as with portal 2.
It depends on what you want out of Portal. Portal 1 was a great showcase for innovative new gameplay, plus a very Valve-style story to discover and beat with an entertaining villain. Portal 2 took Portal 1 as a seed and put 4x the lore behind it, providing 3 major arcs to play through, side character development, and introduced more mechanics to serve as room puzzles.

Portal 2 was great but the war between the songs "still Alive" of portal 1 and "orchestra" from portal 2,
"Still Alive" is a clear winner.
The Day Half-life’s 3rd entry comes out is the day I live in peace
Edit: Honestly tho, Portal VR could be really cool
this game kinda feels like the same vibes as boneworks
they have a portal vr game just no portal gun, only hands (that's not a joke the gimmick is literally that).
@@stoopidapples1596 you never know
With the exception of the 1920-1950s portion of Portal 2, 1 beats 2. 1 felt more dystopian, puzzle focused and watched (but alone) while 2 always had to have someone talking to you whether it was Wheatley, or GladOS.
6:22 There's Chell and Shell. Noticing that makes me smile :)
Keep going this way, man. Every new video is a favorites one.
i dont know what they were thinking when they made that white gel
That one took me forever to figure out my first time
Ok Megamind
@@grooselegacy That’s a great example of one of the better puzzles in Portal, because it actually requires some logical thought and pre planning to complete! If you compare that to chamber 18, which is basically just killing 4/5 turrets in the same way and then putting a cube on a button, the difference is clear. One of them actually has a clear problem that you need to use some lateral thinking to solve, while the other feels like a simple task, made to take longer with unnecessary steps and a large room.
idk i suck at puzzle games so i like that its easier
1:10 dude, that got me by surprise... I just couldn´t contain de laugh, what a great moment and opportunity to make that joke, also great video man! I enjoy a lot watching portal videos, I just recently replayed Portal 1&2 and I decided to take a look back to all the story :)
I was waiting for you to post a video to say how much I love your channel, I repeat your videos all the time
I hope you never stop posting and reach 1 million subs soon!
Except the new mode of chell doesn’t have pupils, so it just blankly stares… (in gmod I mounted portal 2 and portal 1)
i really enjoyed this video. it was very well edited !!! :)
After playing both games again recently because I had the itch to. Portal 1 kind of feels like an Uber polished tech demo that guided the development of 2 more than anything. It’s just so short with so few puzzle mechanics and less difficulty overall.
Yeah, the thing that stuck the most playing the two back to back is how much it feels like a short tutorial to the sequel
i absolutely love when these portal video documentaries show up every few months or so for me to watch after school while eating
Your voice actually reminds me of how glados sometimes will deliver some lines. Good stuff
Those borrowings may be because the team of writers is the same as portal 2
Didn't Gabe Newell once said portal 2 is his favorite valve game?
3:26 "It's field tested."
Definitely got me there
Portal is truly of the world’s greatest puzzle games with an amazing story and concept which remained popular throughout the years since it first was introduced
im gonna need the source of that furry pic
@@1marcelfilms found it from a gif called “this is what you look like saying this shite”
and yes that’s actually what it’s called
9:43 fun fact: the burnt companion cube is actually the same one that GladOS made you throw into the incinerator before progressing and the developers made sure they didn’t forget about it since they made portal 1 and gave it back to you incase you actually imprinted onto the companion cube. Quite a story. Am i right?
It is noteworthy that we have already received the Horror Portal. It's called "ERROR"
I just watched an 11 minute plot summary to be finished off with "idk what's better"
I love both of them. I wish we had a Portal 3 game :')
don't you get fired if valve makes Portal 3

1:46 THE JUMPSCARE DIDNT SCARE ME THE SCREAM DID 😭😭😭😭
originally loved portal 2, especially for its expansiveness and humour
but more recently I’ve really started to appreciate portal 1 for its sterility and atmosphere of loneliness
I think a big difference can especially be found in the two’s soundtrack
listening to something like ‘self esteem fund’ you’ll notice it sounds completely different to anything from portal 2
anyway, really good and well-made video :)
In the thumbnail, I couldn’t help but notice that on the portal 1 side, you used the portal 2 chell model
4:04
apparently i have a 4D brain
4:20 oh my god, this is so relatable.
In the beginning I actually tried to do it normally, succeeded on 2 or 3 of them, but after like 2 hours I just gave up with the rest.
i personally like portal 2 more because it has more features and puzzle mechanics, and i like the style the game has
I love your editing ^^ underrated
The first portal game I played is infact Portal 2 and oh boy The first time I played I had so many wrong thoughts
Like when Wheatley speaks, I thought Chell was talking and Wheatley's voice was the announcer's
Chell is a boy, yes. Well, I think you had no idea about Chell
@@AbdullahEkici34 Literally within the first few seconds of gameplay from both games you immediately realize that you're female because it's a side effect of how the game was designed. I'm not sure how OP didn't catch that.
@@beaner1014 Actually yes, we can understand it from GLaDOS's speechs
So, I’m actually making some new test chambers with Portal. Test Chamber 1 will be released on my channel tomorrow because it’s complete! Yes, it does use Bee mod, but it’s better than nothing. If you want, once it’s released, I’ll have a link below the video to play it. It’s actually the first one. It’s 2 parts in one test chamber. It’s the basics at first, but If you want to wait a little longer to make the video, 2 more will be dropped on Saturday.
Portal 1 Chell is looks more old, why?
3:18 sell 💀💀
I remember expecting to encounter King Leopard Turret as a boss.
This is a hard question
Harder than a 50 question exam

Nothing beats Chapter 6: The Fall. The visual storytelling paired with amazing visuals is just perfection.
especially the very start "oh hi how are you holding up, because I'm a potato" fire quote

Amazing video and man when you mentioned Portal 2 ending it made me feel nostalgic... Oh well I might play Portal now :).
6:22 alright, the Shell joke was unexpected

Did you know that there is a Half-Life 1 Xen Skybox in the game? It is part of a cut ending where, after defeating Glados you end up seeing the first level of Half-Life 1s Xen.
The original.
- I miss GladOS's colder, more robotic voice
- I miss P1's HL2 influence. Everything that got redesigned went from implied Combine nightmare to just clinical tech out of some '50s concept art (again, looking at you, Glados)
- I miss questioning whether I'm in a research facility or a padded cell
- i miss the grime, beyond the art style P2 is in that weird late 360 era where games just looked... odd, imo, like it was obvious they were pushing consoles past their limit. A lot of assets (like the portal gun itself) looked better in the original.
- In Portal 1, physics puzzles are actually physics-based. In P2, every time you jump a large gap, you can notice yourself get "sucked in" because you're really just getting dragged across. Which is lame as hell.
2:10 thanks for the jumpscare :)
Hmm I don't see how that is a problem. Portal 2's puzzle are so much more complex, Portal 1 is much easier in comparison.
Well, actually, it is a puzzle, but it has a dark story that we didn't know when we were little, until Portal 2 came, this puzzle game has a bitter and scary story in the past. Don't forget powerful sales with great points .change my mind
as someone who never even play or seen someone playthrough the game, i could say that both game had it's own good things and bad things.
i don't think they got bad things at all
2:55 dis is my kingdom come dis is my kingdom come when you feel my heat look into my eyes dis is were my demons hide dis is were my demons hide
I adore both, I prefer P2, but I really wish Portal 2 included the high-energy pellet launchers and rocket launcher turrets.
If I remember right the devlogs inside the game explain why they didn't include those.
Vaule employee: time to make a 3rd game gabe,: oh no you dont we dont count 3 here
my preference is with portal 1, not because of anything in the game but more because it's less game (it's shorter). since it's so short, it's a lot more replayable, kills a bit of time easily. i don't have to dedicate as much for a playthrough as with portal 2.
3:18 why chell looking at me like that? 🤨
in my opinion portal 2 is better, I liked that sense of humor
The frickin bonnie jumpscare got me bro
It depends on what you want out of Portal.
Portal 1 was a great showcase for innovative new gameplay, plus a very Valve-style story to discover and beat with an entertaining villain.
Portal 2 took Portal 1 as a seed and put 4x the lore behind it, providing 3 major arcs to play through, side character development, and introduced more mechanics to serve as room puzzles.

Thank you for informing me
I know I am a 2 years late but playin both of them as a kid was crazy and to me both of them are equally amazing though Portal 2 shines so much more mostly because it does what the first portal does but then adds a fresh new take on what the first one did. Yes it does have those comedic moments but the whole thing of feeling isolated shines in the old aperture sections
